Title: The SAK with lanyard bail thread
Post by: SteveC on May 29, 2016, 05:45:40 PM
I love how these old models look. It feels more comfortable in the hand to me compared to the modern lanyard ring placement as well as looking cool.

Show if you got em  :tu:

You've got the best one I've seen so far Steve  :salute: I agree with you and wish they would still make them with the bail.
Here's my SI in a post:

Bails do look great but they can be real blade wreckers when they snap shut on them ... Especially Wenger soldiers with a free moving steel bail and nice strong back spring.

All that said a bail on an old knife is a thing of beauty :)

B. The Bail is a mod

Thanks guys, this one is still a work in progress.  It had light green pain smeared in places and I have been trying to get it all off.  Most gone from the outside, but it's even on the liners so a bit harder to get to.  But I don't mind handling it for awhile every day.  😜

An old thread resurrected from mid-Summer . . .
Some beautiful vintage going back to the 1960's and earlier!

Best I can do here is a 2004 Wenger SI:

Your looks to be in better shape than mine.  :like:
I notice the bottle opener and blade on mine seem to be less polished than on a modern 91mm(only ones I have to compare to) at least, is that the case on yours?
Are the layers as thick as on a soldier? They are a good bit thicker than on a modern 91mm vic?
I will post better pics in the morning.

Uh oh, I've fallen in love with my first alox!

Thanks!

Looks may deceive. Mine was heavily used, there's a slight S curve in the back of the main blade and there are sharpening scars all over.
Dimensions of the Amefa seem equal to the Soldier, although I didn't take measures.

Aside from a few minor things the tools on mine are fine.
The one thing that bugs me is that the bottle opener was some slight side play and it doesn't seem to be a problem with the rivet?  ???

My Woodsman with bail:
(https://c5.staticflickr.com/1/481/31459051276_009377d0eb_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/PVVRVN)

I have a Champion with the lanyard bail and exposed rivets. On the back it has the triangular awl, phillips that is round on the outside edge, but square on the opposite edge with a file on the back of it, and a long fingernail file with the best tip for cleaning fingernails that I have ever used.

The main blade has a cross bow and VICTORIA OFFICIER on the one side of the tang and VICTORINOX  SWITZERLAND  STAINLESS on the other.
The small blade is a clip blade and it also has scissors, wood saw (with rounded off end), metal file(with rounded off end), fish scaler, arc style can opener( with a cross and Pat.), and bottle opener.

I was at a gun and knife show in Dayton, OH. about 10 years ago and there was a guy whose table just had a bunch of odds and ends on it.  I spotted a box like the one pictured with your woodsman, so I asked if I could see it and it turned out to be a NOS Champion....it had never been used, so I asked how much he wanted and he said $10.00.

Obviously he was not into knives .......you never saw anybody go for their wallet as fast as I did..... I could not believe he did not want more.......that was the only time I have ever stumbled on to such a good deal in my life.

The tweezers have a nickel/silver tip on them. 1956 was the last year for the nickel/silver tip on the tweezers(it was changed to aluminum in 1957), so it has to be between 1951 and 1956, since the arc style can opener was introduced in 1951. I had only seen pictures of the exposed rivet models prior to that, and I have never run into another exposed rivet
model since.

I figured this was the right thread to ask. I’ve got an old Pioneer with those ”semi hollow” rivets on one side. Does anyone know if it’s possible to attach a bail to a SAK like this?

Hi Sjoqvist - not sure what you mean by 'on one side' - a picture would be good. Does it look like this?

Hi! Here is a picture of it. I’ve seen pictures of old pioneers with similar looking rivets, so I think it’s from factory. The hole is not all the way through. It’s a few millimeters deep on each side

I meant on both sides by the way, I got that a bit wrong :ahhh

Ah! It looks like someone has drilled into it - I did this on one of mine and the bail fits very securely. Here's a pic:

I might try drilling some holes in the rivets too. :dd:
Title: Re: The SAK with lanyard bail thread
Post by: magentus on June 07, 2018, 12:21:48 PM
Something to bear in mind is that the factory bail is very springy which is why it works so well on drilled rivets - I made one from a wire coat hanger and while it works very well on an actual hollow rivet, I wouldn't trust it to bear weight on drilled rivets.

Thread Necro!

I know, nothing really new here and an old thread anyways, but I did find some of my Photobucket hosted Pics in it and as Photobucket changed their policies a few times more than I care to remember in the last months, I´d like to know: Can you see the pics posted in my post? I can see them, but that might only be because I am the owner of the connected PB account and am logged in or some other computer magic....
Just let me know... Thanks.
