Hi. I've got two in my collection, still think they're one of the best designs to come out of the industry.

I've working on rehabilitating one of them as we speak. It's dirty, smells funny and is in dire need of a good sharpening. As we all know, step #1 is to take many pictures.  :D

Here's a taste, I'll start a new thread in a few days when I get it all done.

Anyone have any tips for sharpening the serrated blade? My Sharpmaker has proved fruitless so far.

cool pics i look forward to seeing it brought back to life  :tu: and although i cant compare the wave to many other MT's this for me has been a very useful tool for 12 years and hard to replace for me, but i know it has to happen by the end of this year, i still have to decided if to get mine polished up and flathead replaced, or leave its character , i will see,

This is similar to my story,my dad got mine for me in 98 as a B,day present, long story but he left my mum when i was 9 and this is the only thing he has got me, i didnt think it held any sentimental value to me as i didnt see him for 16 years and long story but as he started to do the same to me and my brother to my kids i told him to get lost 4 years ago, well the wave did me more to me than i thought after i sold it and i was lucky the guy sold it back to me so all good in the end, my wave means something to me on a odd level, so im never selling it again, once i get its replacement its going back in its original box  :tu:

very nice allan, thats 3 of us  :tu: im sure there must be lots of OR wave owners, pics and comments welcome  :tu:

for me ive found all the tools on the wave very useful, i like the serrated saw and have used it alot over the years, i use to do custom diecast models and used it for cutting parts, the file was useful as well, i broke the knob of our cooker 2 years ago and had to use pliers to turn it, angie got to grips with the wave for 2 years it lived in the kitchen, then i fitted a new knob, did think it was a waste of a good tool

I have one too, and it's a great tool but I wish the locking was the other way round; if the blades didn't lock and the tool did, it would be perfect EDC!

I'm sure Ben will be a long shortly... ::)

 :D

I have one too, but it never really supplanted the PST.  I think it was mostly because the tool set wasn't THAT different but the tool was significantly larger.

Still, mine's not going anywhere.  ;)

Well actually, it found me. :P A couple years ago I'd been given two busted up Waves by a friend of mine (he's REALLY hard on his tools) who wanted me to take them all apart and make one good one out of the pieces. When I told him about Leatherman's warranty we decided to send them in instead. They sent back two brand new original Waves, one of which was this Edward Double Scissorhands model. :D So he kept the good one and gave this one to me, which was the cooler one IMO anyway. 8)

Nope, it's not a stupid question :) They are actually very different, albeit they look similar from a distance.

I'll list the differences I can think of:

Beefier pliers
Bigger PE and serrated blades
Locking tools in the handles
Much more comfortable due to the more rounded design
Bit driver replaces fixed drivers
Removable Pocket Clip and Lanyard ring
Bronze bushings

..... erm. That's all I can think of. Overall, the new Wave is much improved.

I've got one.  It was my second Leatherman and my longest running EDC.  I carried it faithfully for almost six years.  Then I found this place and got my Surge, then a Blast...  It's a great tool, regardless of it's bendy handles and plethora of flat heads, not to mention,  a true piece of multitool history and inovation.

I found mine at a Pawn shop last year on vacation for $10 bucks :o had 20 on it but the guy said they were having a half off sale on tools and since it was a tool :D  :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh Didn't even have to haggle with him :) I did have to clean up on it a bit and sharpen it but I have done that to more than a few of my tools :tu: Never really used it much but glad I have it

Thanks. I know this is a dumb question but where are the date codes located? ??? I bought all of these new and just put them away. They were never used and I never looked for any date codes.

Date codes are inside the back of the handle frame.  YYMM   (year and month).

The first one is circa 1998-1999,  the next is from around 99-2000 and last was just right after that in around 2000. :)

The bumps are good cuz you can't tell which knife you are opening if you are not looking at it.  :ahhh That way you can tell you have the serration blade.  :2tu:

The last one seems to be pushing on the back of the plier hubs which leads me to believe that its providing friction to keep it from turning into a butterfly knife.  the older ones (like mine) have the handle frame actually rubbing on the hub which causes the friction.  I need to get one of those.  I don't want to lose my original wave through the warranty system when it wears out.

Post by: ratslash7 on February 03, 2010, 04:40:52 AM
I have one. I carried it for many years. The date codes are 0399 and 0699. It doesn't have the little notches on the back of the  serrated blade. it only took me a couple of days before I put a spot of green enamel paint on that blade near the pivot so I could recognize the plain edge blade. It wasn't till I noticed the little notches on the new Wave that I filed some ridges on the top of the blade. (I wish I'd thought of that by myself.)

It's still a favorite. I love the size but I don't carry it much any more. The Charge TTI gets more belt time than any of my multi's.

The only other mod' I did to the Ol' Wave is to grind one of the middle sized flat drivers into a rather effective awl.

At the place where I worked back in '99, there was this new guy and one day he noticed my Supertool on my belt and he showed me his Wave and while doing so, he started bragging about the fact that his one was newer, and had one hand opening tools on the outside ... I responded that mine was bigger and had locking screwdrivers  ;).

Anyway, the seed had been planted and in 2003 I bought myself a Wave.  It was my third multitool, after my ST in '94 and my Gerber Multiplier in '98.

Reading this topic I just noticed that I don't have any good pics of my old Wave, just the ones with my new Wave and on all of them (except the one below) the old Wave is out of focus ...

I have a new wave which i use regulary. I recently came across a 20th anniversary Wave on eBay UK. Being a newby to the multitool world I had no idea as to the value or the scarcity of these. I managed to contact the seller before eBay shut him down and the wave plus leather case in excellent condition arrived a couple of days ago. All the tools appear to had little or no use. The only criticism I have is that when the tool is closed there is a bit of looseness that isn't there when its open. Has anyone else noticed this on theirs? Has anyone used this model on a regular basis if so how has the anniversary decals stood up. My opinion of them is that they won't last long in a working situation.

Has anyone used this model on a regular basis if so how has the anniversary decals stood up. My opinion of them is that they won't last long in a working situation.

Great find mate  the wave rattle or wobble is pretty normal due too its design  :tu:

I have a new wave which i use regulary. I recently came across a 20th anniversary Wave on eBay UK. Being a newby to the multitool world I had no idea as to the value or the scarcity of these. You're quite right to worry about the BO finish. I am so disappointed with Leatherman's poor attempt at BO finish compared to Victorinox or even a cheap Chinese maker like Sanrenmu. I paid only £9 for this Sanrenmu and just look how beautiful and durable the black finish is.

I think the DLC found on the 20th Anniversary is not too bad , much more robust than BO.
Yours does look to be a bit faded already though  .

The early Waves are prone to developing looseness especially in the handles at the 2 plier pivots  LM sorted it with the 'new' Wave.

As per an old post by Kwakster ;

"The only correct way to tighten up older Waves is to replace the plierhead and the plierhead pivots.
Just tightening the 5 pointed Torx screws will leave you with very hard to open blades, without attacking the real problem which is wear.

I've stopped replacing parts on old Waves altogether, when these come in and the customer hasn't stated a certain fondness of the old tool, it gets exchanged for a New Wave."

Kwakster used to be a official Leatherman repairer, my original Wave seems to suffer this looseness due to wear problem.

Wow Eric, that is a shiny Wave!

Here is a pic of my original Wave. It's been used quite a bit and still has held up really well. I picked this one up in Iraq back in 04 and it has been around the world with me. I don't use it to often anymore but every once and a while I still carry it.

My old Wave is no more shiny than others, it's all thanks to correct lighting, nothing beats the afternoon sun for making tools look so shiny  8).  And playing a bit with the setting in Canon RAW mode also helps  ;).

The picture of the Wave next to the sheath, that's the same Wave as the one in the shiny pic.

Yay, yet another "original" LM club I can join.  I just posted in the Supertool one, and now here.  I've finally gotten my long desired original Wave, and for a great deal as well, especially considering it was stated to have not been used.  Once I got it and checked it out, it appears the seller wasn't pulling my leg on that fact.  It appears unused, and I got if for less than $40, which I never thought would happen considering the prices I'd seen them go for before :D.  Pics coming tonight.

Yes it came with the brown leather sheath, which is a much better quality that the sheaths currently being produced by Leatherman. I've owned the original wave since 97 or so and it's still an awesome tool in a small package. I have been thinking about carrying it again but I have tools that are more capable that it and I couldn't stand to break the old girl and send her in for repairs. Instead she sits around looking pretty, wearing a coat of tough glide lol

I thought so, wasn't sure, but I don't have any pics of my original :( I don't remember when I got it, but I got it after my LM crunch broke and at the time it was the best one that fit what I needed. Now I really don't need the pliers and have gone back to my sak, but still carry lm's in my pouch or backpack! But the wave has retired to around the house chores! JR

Another "old" wave owner.  Bought this one locally a couple of years ago.  In very nice condition - dated "0500".

A little while after buying this I found a newer generation wave for a good price and gave it to my brother in law.  I found out later that he had another leatherman with the bit driver and other accessories.  I should have kept that one as I think both of his are still in a cupboard somewhere in his shop.

I've never carried this as it is a bit large and heavy for my needs.  It has come in handy around the house however.

John.

I'm in a second time :D
This one's dated 0598 and 0698, so early on in the production.  I wanted one of these ones as my other one is 0802 and has some differences.  I will have to compare them tonight when I can see them together.

This one's in great shape overall, with little usage from what I can tell.  Mostly just been carried I'd guess.  The PE blade could use some sharpening, but that's it.

Great pics Monrogue  No matter how much better the new Wave is than the old Wave in certain aspects, the old Wave feels better opened and closed in hand :D If they could have kept the shape closer to the older design and put in the better plier head an got some of the flat heads out for a bit driver and made all the insdie tools lock then the older one would have the newer design beat  Needless to say I still love my new Wave as well ;) :D

I tried carrying my newer BO Wave in the included Molle sheath tonight. I hated it!  The Molle sheath flops around too much (have to carry it in vertical position as my work belt is too wide for horizontal carry...) and is too hard to open.

So, back to my original Wave. I can carry it in either my newer or older leather sheath, or as preferred, in my nylon Supertool sheath with Velcro flap and metal belt clip.

Like others here, I prefer the feel of the original Wave.  So the BO newer Wave goes back in the drawer....

Why put the BO Wave away if you are carrying the OG Wave in a Nylon sheath. Just carry the BO Wave in the Nylon sheath.

Also why not get a nylon Wave sheath since the Supertool sheath is larger than the Wave sheath?

Everything said was about the sheath not the actual tool though.

Well, the new Wave won't fit in the old sheath I have been using for the Original Wave.  I suppose it might if I work it long enough.

But in all honesty, I do find I actually prefer the feel of the original Wave.

I have carried my original Wave in the Supertool sheath for as long as I can recall. I just stuffed some paper in the bottom to take up a bit of length. Worked perfect.

I really prefer the Velcro for work so I don't have to worry about scratching cars.  Sure wish I could find a few new sheaths like it...

I will work on the BO Wave, try to stretch the sheath a bit. But the Velcro is also going bad. Doesn't want to stay "velcroed". LOL

I've got a nylon sheath like that, Velcro it's completely blown out. I've thought about having my mom fix it since she sews all the time. I'm a huge fan of all of the original tools; OG Wave, Pulse, Crunch, Sideclip, etc. Are way better than the current offerings. Don't get me wrong, they are awesome but maybe it's the nostalgia of them. I'd take my ST300 and Rebar to any job, but my heart always belongs to the classics. Until they started updating everything they were all I knew.

The original Wave was my first Leatherman and pliers based tool. I bought it mid 2000 with money I scraped together over a few months as a student. This one is still in pretty good nick, and lives the good life in my car. The only issue I ever had with it was that it would rust easily if I left it un-oiled.

At one point it had rust spotting all over. It took me a few hours with metal polish to get it back in shape. Since then I've kept it well oiled.

It did not have a hard life, but I am well pleased with how well it aged. At this rate it will easily outlive its 25 year warranty. :drink:

The OG Wave is what I'll go back to today. But I use a clapped out Supertool nylon sheath with Velcro and a belt clip. I hate a traditional sheath. I like to be able to put that sheath on or take off quickly, without removing my belt.  I really wish there was a pocket clip for the OG Wave.

You can add a pocket clip like this to the lanyard ring. Works pretty well and is removable.

I have a Nite-Ize clip on mine.  It makes it more easily carried, but I don't like the feel of it in hand.  The clip is bigger and more noticeable than the clip for the new Wave.  I wish there was a way to have that clip on the old Wave.

It was supposedly a store demo piece.  It has some light scuffing as if it were carried, and the wood saw had been used as it had wood dust or something on it.  It was also a little dirty, but if it was sitting out for many years and played with as a demo piece, then it was fine.  I gave it a bath and it looks great.  It appears totally unused now :tu:

Questions for people with multiple OG Wave:
- Will you acquire more if given an opportunity?
- What will pique your interest for a purchase (price, condition, accesories...?)
- Your price point?

As of the moment I am waiting on my 5th OG Wave. I could not help it when seeing it with its original dark brown leather sheath. The seller claimed new, I have to wait and see. My max is $50 for a new/ like new OG Wave with a new/ like new sheath, preferably the original dark brown. Box and paperworks are nice, but a NIB OG Wave commands top dollars. I will probably keep buying these puppies if given a right opportunity. As time goes on, these will only get harder to find new. The Flair, Sideclip... may be collectors items, but I believe the OG Wave will be sought after by more people, for its place in multitool history.  :salute:

To answer your questions:  probably if the price is reasonable and condition great.  My price point is around yours.  The last two I've recently acquired were each around $50, and in basically unused condition.  My first appeared unused as well, and I snagged that for $35 or $40.  None of them came with a sheath or anything though.  I would love to get a NIB one, but those are always too expensive.

I think a new OG Wave with its dark brown leather sheath is the closest thing to a NIB Wave though. I have not had a chance to handle the standalone light brown OG Wave sheath that captain spaulding has, but it seems the dark brown ones are of better quality, according to a few websites. I also look out for the future, when I may move on to the next great things, and these Waves still retain, if not increase, their values, especially when they are accompanied by OG sheaths as well.

That sheath looks like it is in mint shape. Throw it on eBay for $20, someone may picks it up  :tu:

I also have a OG Wave arrived today. Date codes are 0403A and 0303A. I wonder what the A's mean. A little gritty with opening, but very little evident of implements being used, mainly the small driver  :tu: No sheath though.

I notice little U-shaped pieces inside the channels of the plain edge and serrated blades. I never pay atention to that. Are they to keep the blades on center?

Nice.  This is the only one I've gotten that had a sheath with it.  It's a nice sheath.  I'm not sure what the A means.  I think my two that are newer ('02 & '03) have it.  Same with the blade catching thing.  I think it is as you say, to keep it centered/securely in place.

My 4th entry ;)  Dated 0199 in both handles.  Also came with the brown sheath which is very nice.  Too bad I don't sheath carry.

Thanks man.  Yes, and it's the only MT I seem to want to keep searching for, even though I don't need any at this point.

Cheers folks - was nice digging them out and playing with them for the first time in a while.

The signature job lives in a glass display case of course, but the others hide away in the dark, lol.

The two (non signature) 20 year models are duplicates as it happens, i remember picking the first one up on eBay and it had been used quite a bit so there's some where to the black coating. Then I managed to pick up a NIB one a while later.

That's it!!!  I quit, the old Wave wins!!!!

I have been trying to come up with a pocket clip set up for my OG Wave. Tonight I thought I had it figured out. I had a broken clip from the new Wave. I thought I'd drill it out and use it. But noooooo....

First, just getting the end cap off the old Wave was horrible. A few bloody knuckles later I figured it out. Then the problem was the clip. I could not get my center punch to even phase it. Not enough for a drill bit to bite. I even tried tape and that didn't work.

I dont have a drill press. My mother in law has given me my late father in law's drill press, but it is still up in Indiana. Maybe I'll try again later. Ha-ha!!!

It sure is!!!!  I really would love a pocket clip on my old Wave. I like it much better than my newer Gen Wave. I guess I'll have to give the adhesive clip a try again. Nite Ize Hip Clip I think it's called....

I've never really used an old Wave, mainly because I had a new Wave and Charge before I got one. It's good that some people still prefer them :)

I prefer the screw driver assortment on the old Wave. I have rarely had a need for any different screwdriver size. I don't carry the bit set with me so the bit changer on the new Wave is useless for me, personally.

I like my newer BO Wave, but just prefer the old Wave. I did carry it for over 15 years so I am really used to it...

Probably mentioned here already, from this page https://www.smartknives.com/Leatherman-Multi-Tools/Leatherman-Wave-Orig-Vars.htm
So there are three variations of the OG Wave:
- 1998-2001: Leatherman USA on pliers, no ridge on serrated blade
- 2001: Leatherman USA, ridges on serrated blade
- 2001-2004: Leatherman Tool, ridges on serrated blade

I never paid attention to variations of the OG Waves, until my two most recent OG Waves. What caught my eyes were the smooth end caps of the handles. My latest one has 0404A / 0404B date codes. So, this begs a question: Who has the most recent date codes on his OG Wave?  ???

I like how elegant it looks.
Still, the mind boggles. Four flatheads? Surely at least one could be an awl.

It's not that awl-ful.

I have the perfect sharpening tool to do this, I will post the name of it and the details when I get home this afternoon. It is a small diamond coated tool that goes from about a half inch round all the way down to just small enough to fit the smallest serrations on the blade. I was totally amazed when I found it and it actually worked to bring my blade 2 sharpest new condition. I even had one mechanic friend accuse me of keeping it hidden in my feet and never using that blade, I'm careful with it so as not to knick it but I also keep it razor sharp.
I made a Believer out of him when I took his old serrated blade that would barely cut a radiator hose and when I gave it back to him you could lay it flat on your arm and cut a thin layer of skin.
Between that tool and my sharpmaker set up that I bought when they first came out at a County Fair did the trick totally.

Thanks to this board I took a little closer look at my Waves, I have two original and two newer, I really like the feel of the old style better. Just ordered a old style leather sheath of eBay, it will probably be the one I carry a bit. Curious how some are attaching a belt clip? Is it a difficult mod? I have a SideClip dated 98, but can't get the blade out as easy as the Wave, so would like to pocket clip carry a Wave.

Dated, 1001B, 0402A & 0101, 1200

Monrogue got a Sidekick/Wingman clip off of eBay and got it to work on one of his :tu: Seems like someone else might have as well  That or they tried and couldn't get the screw out to put the clip on  I also do know for a fact that Monrogue tried to put another clip on another old style Wave and couldn't get the screw out either :tu: Good luck with putting a clip on and I hope you are able to get it apart

Unless someone can say otherwise it appears that it is peculiar to '03 model Waves and have either 'A' or 'B' added to the end of the date code. It appears to coincide with the end of that model before the 'New Wave' was introduced in 2004. It's been suggested that one handle is the 'A' handle and the other the 'B' handle. However, i have personally seen double 'A's and double 'B's as in both handles have the same letter following the numerical code.

Could it be different production lines? I think both handles are identical without the tools fitted so why would they differentiate them and if they were to be dedicated to a certain tool set, why do we come across models with double letters? Has this been witnessed in other Leatherman models of the time?

I doubt very much that Leatherman would issue out seconds or 'B-Stock' and why would they add 'A' to regular issues? Like everyone else, i just have to know things!

Ok, an August 02, interesting. Can I ask, is it a polished version or were they just Gen 2? I've just cleaned mine up and it has taken a real good shine very easily, just wondering is the lettering may have something to do with a higher chrome content or something.......

Hi can anyone here let me know which size tamper/security bit I would need to open up a 2002 wave?

As a side note I don't know if a 02 is considered original by collectors since it does not have the USA marking on the pliers head but was made before the new wave 04+.

I got a second hand 0401 original Wave.  I've already posted in the main Wave thread, about cleaning it up, but I wanted to bring it here too.

I just discovered I could do this:

(http://i.imgur.com/WHM14En.jpg) (http://imgur.com/WHM14En)

(http://i.imgur.com/UVgOEBx.jpg) (http://imgur.com/UVgOEBx)

The grip is tight.   Would be even cooler with a ratchet drive :)

My 01/02 Wave is still my favorite LM and I use it, in one way or another, just about every day!

Many other Leatherman tools have come and gone, but the OG Wave (and PST) will stay with me forever.

Thank you, Poncho. What you can’t see in the pic is the signs of years of use n abuse. Haha

One of the handles got weld splatter once. I used a die grinder to take it off. I wasn’t very patient or proficient with it and it shows.

It’s been sent back to Leatherman twice. Once for broken plier jaws ( buddy borrowed it and used it to align a car motor with its motor mounts! ) and once for a broken Phillips driver.

They tried to send me a new Wave (back when the OG Wave was still the new Wave...) but I told them I wanted MINE back.

If something were to break nowadays, I’d just source the parts to fix. Too sentimental to ever send back to Leatherman.

Maybe three years??  Still stuck on there and not showing any signs of coming off. But to be honest, I rarely carry it. Usually just setting in a drawer. I use it a lot at home, just don’t carry it.

I got my OG wave years ago at the Flea market.   I had no idea how much they went for so I tried to haggle the guy down from the 35 he was asking. He got ornery that I asked and declined to go any lower but I got it.   I ended up modding my sheath and resewing the belt clip higher up so it would hang lower on my belt.  then a few years ago it got lost. I m hoping it is in a drawer around here somewhere.

I retired it after getting a refurbished newer model. But it was so perfect, except the non locking tools, i loved everything about it so much better than the newer wave.

I have ran across a couple of gunked up ones at some pawn shops , but Im not paying 25 bucks for the "privledge" of gleaning what looks like road tar out of them, no thanks.

Sometimes you can let them soak in WD40 and it will take care of most of the cleaning for you :salute: but it does get a bit tedious cleaning a MT up sometimes  :ahhh I usually find it well worth it in the end though :salute:

Still very nice in BO.
There are lots of differences, but originals are easy to ID as there are no locks on the handles (for the tools), and the scissors are the old PST type.

Ok, I feel like a bit of an idiot (I used to know that it was a leverage point, but forgot), so thanks for the answer.

It's been sitting in a damp drawer for 5 years, and I thought it was destroyed (rust colored and completely seized up when I found it), but after 24 hours soaking it in WD-40 it was like new!  So I was playing with it late at night (opening and closing those pliers is kind of hypnotic) and suddenly thought "why is that there?...".

It's an awesome pocket knife, best I've ever owned.  And thanks for the welcome to the forums!

Hello all, so I'm new to the forum and I've had my Wave since Feb '99, date codes are 0199 on both handles. It's my EDC for work and can't live without it, so a few months back I broke the tip off one side of the plier head about 3/16 off the tip. I told my wife I think it's time to retire it and maybe pick up a newer model. My wife being as smart as she is was like, does it have a warranty? I'm like yeah I think so I contacted Leatherman but it takes about 2 weeks or so to get it back and I really can't work without it, SO I decided to order a Charge plus TTI as a backup until I get back my baby. I also figured maybe it would suit me better being a newer model with all the upgrades/updates; it must be better, right? So yeah I got my TTI and man I don't know if I just got a lemon or are Leatherman's really not what the used to be?

George.

I'm a proud owner of an original Wave since yesterday  :ahhh

I like to think of it as a mix of a PST and a modern Wave. I love it!

Date codes are 0399 on both handles.

Another package arrived today  :mail:
It was on its way since the 14th of December  ::)

This one is not un-used though. I cannot be that lucky again I guess.

I did...
...re-shape the re-shaped small flat screwdriver
...remove some rust from the pliers
...sharpen the tip of the serrated blade
...clean it up a bit

And now it's ready to go  :tu:

I've planned to carry this one frequently.
Date codes on both handles are 0399 like on the other one I've got last week.

Which brings me to a question:
"At what point did Leatherman change from the initial darker red/brown leather sheath to this lighter brown less quality one?

Very nice Wave!

I think there are two versions of that light colored sheath. They were sold with the Wave around 99, I have one that I got from a friend back then because he preferred a nylon sheath.

Leatherman also released a sheath like it a couple of years ago. It looks very similar but the stitching and leather aren’t nearly as good.

Incidentally, the original sheath works great for the Victorinox Spirit.

Because looking at mine here it seems old, stored with the tool inside for quite a while.
And comparing it with pictures of the current one on LM's website the stitching on the back and other tiny details are different

:salute:  ... ok so I guess mine could be the original that came with the '99 Wave?

On the other hand, my other '99 Wave got the older sheath.

Was '99 a year of sheath change for the Wave?

I’m trying to remember the details about my leather sheath. I was there when my friend bought his Wave, it would have been 1999 or 2000 in my mind, but that has been 20 years ago so it could be off a bit. Definitely not later than 2001 though but all of this isn’t really narrowing it down, sorry.
We lost touch so I can’t check his Wave for date codes.

The sheath does look to be in very good shape, all the letters are still there. Mine is pretty worn after a lot of use. Would you say the wear of the sheath is consistent with that of the tool?

But we are just guessing here, maybe the previous owner used a different sheath?

If I were to guess I would say your sheath could be original to your Wave.

The newer Heritage sheaths have an American flag and “Proudly made in the USA” under the belt loop.

I’m absolutely sure they originally supplied these with the gen 1 Wave. The date is the only uncertainty I have right now.

I’ll try to look for some pictures this weekend to see if I can narrow it down. The earliest I’ve seen it on my belt is in 2007.

Another thing is that the originals don’t fit the new Wave without a lot of stretching but the later ones do.

If I remember correctly these tan sheaths did come with the later OG Waves. Maybe the last couple of years. Leatherman also sold them I think right up until the new Made in USA Heritage sheaths became available. I had one briefly when I first started collecting and the quality seemed fairly close to the old ones. The leather was maybe slightly thinner but that could have just been a natural variance.

Matt. you have both to do a side by side,  how do they compare ?

Thanks Steve!

I have two Waves now both 0399.
The nice one got the old dark red/brown better quality sheath, as you've seen it.

The other one I've got yesterday came with the lighter brown softer leather fuzzy inside still not bad leather sheath, that still appears to be an older original.

Two different sheath styles for the same year 0399 ? That's what got me wondering  :dunno:

So as per the first eBay listing they've shipped them at least in 2003.

Maybe the previous owner mixed up the sheath for some reason  :pok:  :D

Or 1999 was the year where they've changed the sheath style  :dunno:

The last eBay listing shows a sheath that looks like the original style but not fully. The colour seems too brown to me, also the texture is super smooth.... I don't know  :dunno:

I think yours is a replacement, they definitely came with the old style in 1999. Like I said I believe it was only in the last year or two maybe. I'm thinking 2003-4

Well, the first one arrived yesterday. The outer blades are screwed in super tight; I'm eagerly awaiting delivery of a pair of five-point Torx bits to rectify that problem. And the handles rattle a lot in the closed position, due to the loose plier pivot. Is that just a function of the tool's design? I have a well-used post-2004 Wave with pliers that are almost as loose, but the handles don't rattle when closed.

I'm not used to having such a variety of flatheads. The long one is slightly twisted; it might turn into an awl.

But those SCISSORS! This thing has SCISSORS! Not scissors, like the newer Wave, but SCISSORS! :multi:
Title: Re: Original wave owners club,
Post by: McStitchy on January 23, 2021, 06:06:14 PM
From the two I have the seemingly un-used one also has some good play when closed.
It's not the pliers pivot, because when I open the pliers they have no play at the pivot at all.

I took a magnifier to find out where the play/looseness in closed position comes from, and I saw it then.
It's the pliers mounting to the handles.
Either the whole for the screw in the handle is too wide, or the whole for the screw in the pliers arm.

Also, it would help if the pliers arms did not have so much room within the handles in the first place. Btw, this varies from Wave to Wave.

So one could tighten the screws to press the handles closer to the pliers arms, but that would also tighten up the outer blades.

I'm sure it's not a fault but.... how do they say..."by design"  :D

I'd like to hear from others to see if they experience the same and what they think about it  :hatsoff:

I think that's the problem with mine, at least compared to my post-2004 Wave. Not the plier arms, but the plier head in the closed position. Since the plier jaws are nestled in the opposite handles when closed, it doesn't matter how tight the handle pivots are. If the plier pivot is loose, AND there's room between the plier head and the walls, then the plier jaw, and the handle connected to it, will rattle. My OG Wave has at least 1/16" of clearance between the flat faces of the plier head and the walls of the handles, which is apparently enough room to rattle back and forth.

The pliers on the post-2004 that I have fit snugly between the parallel inner surfaces of the handles--so much so that there are scuff marks from this on the plier head.
Title: Re: Original wave owners club,
Post by: McStitchy on January 23, 2021, 08:30:33 PM
Well then yours has a different problem because mine does not have any play at the pliers pivot at all  :salute:
The connection of the pliers arms to the handles is the point of connection that shows the play and movement in my case  :hatsoff:

On the later OG model where they've changes the pliers arms to incorporate those retention springs this problem is much less reported btw.

My second OG Wave arrived! It was listed as "used" on Ebay, but it looks brand-new. All the blades have their factory edges, no wear on any of the tools, no scuff marks or scratches.
One question: does the OG Wave have bronze bushings/spacers/washers on the outside blade pivots like the new Waves do? Because these blades don't open nearly as smoothly as my newer Wave.

That will be an interesting challenge for sure, especially the serrated blade. I have yet to find a sharpener with the right diameter to fit the large serrations on the Wave.

I notice that you're in the UK. That might be a good candidate for making UK-legal by just removing the blades.

I have grinded the blade by using dremel and a small diameter grinding tool. Do not grind too much, just slight touch makes it sharp again.
