Uu someone needed fire? Everything else except butane/propane burner and Zippo (it once was part of my carry but fluid dries before i get change to use it, i prefer ferro rod and butane lighters) belongs to my backpack. 3 lighters, 3 ferro rods. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240216/b5117a4b37a7616cd137910e57d6bc80.jpg)Dom’t know if you’d be interested but Zippo now makes butane inserts for their lighters - double torch, torch and soft flame.

Dom’t know if you’d be interested but Zippo now makes butane inserts for their lighters - double torch, torch and soft flame.actually im interested, need to look those since i would love to get rid of carrying extra fluid. also dont need to change wick and flints :D
This could be an interesting challenge. I like the people who have signed on. Might have to think about joining a little more first. It seems like this might turn into a Zippo exhibition. Of course I don't smoke and don't own or carry a Zippo. It could get boring for everyone to see my daily photo of a book of paper matches. Best wishes. G
:P
My wife gifted me the Nanostriker XL. I like it.
I thought it would be a bit too small for my hands but I got used to it pretty quick. Can't wait to see what you picked up. :2tu:

Anybody got the "zippo army knife"? (https://www.zippo.com/products/zippo-fire-starting-multi-tool) Be cool to see one in action.I don’t have it but have thought about it a few times. Some of the reviews I’ve heard about it weren’t that good so I have passed.

That’s a good set of sparkys you got there.
Is that a light my fire brand of the morakniv ferro rod companion (I think that’s the right name for theknife)? Both are just mora and light my fire though?

April Firestarting ChallengeI was thinking of doing the same but its been a busy day and now its raining with a tornado watch. I did light a candle though :D I am just going to strive for as many fires as I can.
Fire 1 of 30
So I'm going into this with a self issued sub-challenge to start a fire each day, as well as a picture of the means of starting the fire. .
Very nice looking set of tools and things you got there.:ahhh LET THE FLAMES BEGIN! :ahhh

other items pictured left to right: leatherman PS style, Reylight triple dawn flashlight, titanium embassy pen, Farmer X red alox, titanium clip, titanium travel tube, titanium mini pen, titanium mini pick and titanium magnifying glass.

Some book matches I picked up somewhere that have tagged along in my first aid kit for a long time.

🔥 DAY 02 🔥
(https://i.imgur.com/jMll8RK.jpeg)
carried the mag glass again today and matches in the titanium travel tube again. It rained all day so I didn't have a chance to have a fire but maybe tomorrow.
I'm now wondering if a significantly strong flashlight counts as a fire starter :rofl:I would say yes, but if and only if you demonstrate that you can actually start a fire with it.
April Firestarting ChallengeClassic!
Fire 2 of 30
This morning I grabbed a 9V and a wad of 0000 steel wool and "carried" it in my lunchbox all day waiting for an opportunity to make a fire. I wound up bringing it back home and finally got to do it before dinner. I didn't have proper tinder for an actual flame up,,, but I got smoke,,,, so I'm counting it.

Day 2Great use!
The evening was chilly enough to setup the fire pit. Used the Exotac Nandostriker XL to light the dried sunflower stalks we used as kindling.
Day 3Bic works in a mysterious way for me...sometimes I could have sworn some of them would emptied out just by sitting around in a drawer, some would just kept on going like an energizer bunny. But the firststarting device I'd always bring is always a Bic.
I've had this mini Bic on my keys for three or so years.
No zip-tie safety, disposable, found it in the street, on my keys for over three years, and it is more reliable that a lighter that cost me $35 and they sell it empty to begin with. More on that later.
I gotta give up this challenge, too much things goes around and cannot focus on this. I will post some pics on my journey along month but cannot now commit fully on this.Sorry to see you go, do come back often whenever you are free!

Can you get sunflower stalks to catch other tinder? I’ve only been able to get husks to smoke and burn a little bit without catching other tinder. I imagine they’re similar.
I'm now wondering if a significantly strong flashlight counts as a fire starter
Lit up another cigar this evening. Used my "travel" matches. I commandeered and old Tic-Tac box that I glued the strike strips to. Good use of a tictac box that would otherwise go in the trash.

Day 3 of 30
As usual, my EDC mini Bic. Also, I have my Blueridge overland gear bum bag in my work backpack, and I have this regular Bic wrapped in Gorilla tape in there. I've got a hair tie on it to keep it from leaking and in the event my wife, daughters, or foster son need one for a ponytail. DAY 3 I had my signal with me today on a hike. No fire starting though.
DAY 4 Old school today! I've got a tin with my steel, some flint pieces, char cloth, and assorted other tinder. It's too windy and I don't have time or patience before work to start a fire with it. I have done it, but the tiniest SAK ferro rod works 1000x better.
Day 3That's a pretty neat way to repurpose a cooking pan!
I am really enjoying the diversity of everyone’s fire making gear so far. I went for the Bic today, and I got an old wok to use as a fire bowl.
[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ] [ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]
it's pretty strong- 3000 lumens and can melt a plastic bag so maybe you could be a fire starter- hopefully not in my pocket. :rofl:I remembered long time ago I was attending a meeting while the lights went off in the middle of it, I pulled out my trusted SF A2 and ceiling bounce the light for half an hour until the meeting ends. At that point, I completely forgotten how hot the light would have gotten and it sure felt like fire (pun intended).
Day 4
Slow, dreary day. My foot is not agreeing with the new medication. I was in too much pain at work so they let me leave early. Anyway.
My Zippo was a gift. I bought the single torch insert even though I had seen some bad reviews. And, what do you know. Mine doesn't work out of the box. I contacted Zippo, they gave me the Aus customer service email. I hope I can get it sorted. I've seen people explain the necessary fix, but I don't want to take it apart, if I can have Zippo themselves fix it.

the reality is a bic is just one of the bestTruth. They are great pieces of gear.

Day 6 obviously not in my pocket. Haha but for sparking up a torch to loosen some bolts today. Honestly makes me wonder why you don't see these in kits home kits, they spark super easy.
Day 5:
Man, I love the smell of Zippo fuel
(https://i.imgur.com/WvO6Hpo.jpeg)To an extent, you’ve answered your own question, in the sense that one of the reasons you don’t see these in many other applications is their large size relative to other options such as a Bic lighter or Exotac Nanospark.

Day 7 of 30:
Used the NanoSPARK to start a fire to burn birthday trash. Had a video of striking once to light the tinder but don't know how to upload it (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240407/bb74cef8049b9ca2451a5f77d43c9e55.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240407/082db8123155fd0fdb90b1e243567d63.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240407/37aaed9f1b378eb258f67c02d5e4f46f.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240407/4bdece1bd7d869b6d4ef9a738d0611c4.jpg)
Day 7I really quite enjoy the Zebralight form factor and how light it is in the pocket, and is that a Pelican M6 from another picture you posted? Those are built like a tank, and I dare say they are probably one of the most overbuilt flashlight when it first came out.
Weekend carry so I can carry the big knives like I used to in the army. :salute: haha really the only reason I don't anymore is they don't fit well in normal pants. Military fatigues have big pockets.
Day 6Cool! 8)
Didn't get to post yesterday as we were tied up all day with the kids's games and family coming over. Here's a tiki lighter I got in Hawaii 15yrs ago.
Day 8That's one long match! :o But I could imagine they are great for lighting gas lantern.

Ah yes I love that little zebralight, it wasn't me who posted the pelican, but I agree they are great lights.Yikes, sorry for the mixed up. :hatsoff:
Day 9I have not seen them separately, do you use it to spark tinder? Or light a gas stove?
My foot is on fire. :(
But it doesn't count for the challenge so here's three sparkers. The two I carved out of Bic lighters, the smaller one is from a lighter branded TuTu, they look like a Bic but have a sparker insert like Clipper lighters.
Had to bow out of this one, just couldn't keep up. But just got this USGI Aviation Match Case and thought I'd share with y'all.Thats pretty cool Lazar. A lot of fire starting power in one place.

How do you like the Reylight? I discovered his light sometime last year, and all the tints are some of the best I have seen. Quite enjoy his practical spacing and setting of the lights.🔥DAY 08🔥
(https://i.imgur.com/yktaOBA.jpeg)
happy solar eclipse day to those who could see it :ahhh
carried the Dunhill rollagas again but no uses.
other items: titanium embassy pen, Reylight triple dawn and FX
Day 8But the cool thing about steel wool is it could be easily lit with electronics/battery, and it is multi purpose as is. I also wonder will one do better than the other in wet environment, with or without the jelly...
Ran a little experiment comparing some steel wool and some dryer lint.
The lint obviously went up quick after a spark with a good flame.
The steel wool again caught well with a spark but smoldered more than burnt. I should try again with a little petroleum jelly on each to compare.
🔥DAY 09🔥Also carried the FX and a Reylight x Vosteed Rook flashlight with triple Nichia 519a 4000K emitters that Rey just sent over. so far i'm really impressed with what it puts out for its relatively small size. i can post some beam-shots if anyone is interested- just a gorgeous tint from those 519's! :ahhh
Hope the foot will get better soon!
I remembered seeing these from another challenge, was it from the Nessmuk challenge?

As a fellow flashlight enthusiast, I'm always happy to see a beam shot as a comparison. And I absolutely adore the 519a leds, especially the 5700 dedomed. It has absolutely no tint shift even when when it is dim and a nice hint of rosiness in it to make it warm and good to look at. (sorry for the detour, can't resist this one)🔥DAY 09🔥

Day 8Neat looking bic!
Had to travel for work so I didn't get to post earlier. Stopped by a gas station and picked up this cool lighter. No, I'm not a Pisces. I only noticed the cool looking Koi when I bought it. Didn't notice the Zodiac sign until I got home.

Day 9 of 30Did it get the job done?
Had to fire up the bee smoker today.
[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]
DAY 10 My sapphire Spartan with Firefly. The problem should be obvious: the tip broke off the Firefly, leaving it impossible to remove from the scale by normal means. Another SAK came to the rescue, but I don't normally carry two. I've thought about sculpting a drop of JB Weld to make a new end to grab. Good idea? :think:I too think sculpting the JB weld probably is a pretty viable solution, especially if they don't cure too quickly so you could work it into a shape that you want.

Day 10That's a cool test, and the delicate size of the flrefly probably does make it even more challenging that it is. I wonder will a larger ferro rod or even one with magnesium block will make a big difference in this damp environment.
I pulled some fungus off a dead tree with the intent of using it as tinder. I had plenty of spark with my Firefly but it wasn't taking it. I thought it was either too windy or the fungus was still damp from yesterday's storms. I added some dryer lint but still no fire. I finally wrapped everything in a napkin, and then used some chunks of bark to block the spark from the wind. After several tries I finally got it to light. I felt like I had plenty of spark but the wind definitely didn't help any. I'm going to try again with the Firefly when there's no wind to see if that was the issue.
(https://i.imgur.com/v1bpxw7.jpg) (https://i.imgur.com/K2JYRuv.jpg)
Day 10 of 30I think I might have seen it somewhere, besides the gas flame, does it also have a "match" you can lit installed inside the body?
Here is one of my imco lighters, and the brass one is my son's lighter, but I don't know what brand it is.
[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]
If you are referencing the well worn silver pelican in some of my posts, that is a 2350, a single AA. I really enjoy the 2350, I have carried it for 5 years solid, and more recently alternating other flashlights. I also have 4 or 5 m6s, and like those too. Thanks to this, it looks so much like a mini M6 and have no idea this exist. Cool!
Day 11Nice! Sometimes in broad daylight it maybe hard to tell whether the charred cloth was lit, and don't asked me how I know...
Sun is finally out, so I checked the tinder box and pulled out my SAK. Its amazing how quickly this charred canvas will start smoldering. [ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]

I have fond memories with the PM6, that's one rugged flashlight that's almost unbreakable and great for building hotrod led light (way back when led was just starting to become popular).
Yes, it has the permanent match or whatever it is called. Son said it is a $20 Amazon lighter.I think I have probably seen the same thing on the Chinese equivalent ebay (not aliexpress), and it costs around 6+usd. Crazy how much margin they were asking when someone bring it over to amazon.
I still have more fungus left so I'm going to try with the Nanostriker and a mag block/ferro rod to see if that helps. The fungus is pretty thick though so I'm going to tear it into thinner pieces and try with the Firefly again. Is this a 41 Zippo? Looks well loved, awesome!
Day 11
I'll be using my trusty Zippo this weekend. I think I've had it for nigh on 25yrs.
Cool! My 2350 is rugged, I don't know how many times I have dropped it on concrete, and it still works great. It was black anodized, now silver from pocket wear, with keys, multitools, change, etc.Not to mention those M6 has such a mass, they could absorb heat pretty well. I have just placed a 2350 in my Amazon basket, side effect of joining a challenge--always find something to buy. :D
I have hot Roddenberry two or three m6's, one even has a Malkoff drop in unit. Not done with them all, yet. Lots of fun.
I'm afraid I may have to throw in the towel on this one fellas. Kids have all been sick, baseball practice, Gymnastics, and work has resulted in falling days behind. I'll keep watching thoughSorry to see you go, please do feel free to come back as often as you like!
Is the orange thinge the container for the mag glass?🔥DAY 12🔥
(https://i.imgur.com/QInKmyc.jpeg)
tried to start a fire with the magnifying glass but the sun was too low on the horizon by that late in the day. So resorted to the bic lighter to get things going. used some cotton and wax paper that I had stored away in the keychain titanium in Travel tube. it actually worked quite well!
Day 12I remembered the mag glass on mine wouldn't easier lit things up as well, I ended up painting the paper black to get the fire going. I wonder would it work if you paint those tinder black as well...
By comparison the grey Mag seems quicker to get a smolder going. I tried ignition of fatwood shavings and they would not take it with the amount of cloth I had left. So I gave it a little help. Bad reception at the house last night, but here it is.
I carried a bicycle with gorilla tape wrapped around it.

I have just placed a 2350 in my Amazon basket, side effect of joining a challenge--always find something to buy. :D
Is the orange thinge the container for the mag glass?
vintage rollagas can be quite capricious so definitely not something to rely on in a survival situation. I may need to pick up something more reliable- any suggestions for a reliable survival lighter would be appreciated. :cheers:In my experience, Bics are as reliable as anything and probably more reliable than most other options.
I tend to agree with Nate on this subject, Bic with ziptie is definitely way up the list. It is so lightweight with a small footprint, and operable with just one hand makes it a winner.🔥DAY 13🔥cloudy and rainy today so no fire starting attempts with the mag glass.
carried the Dunhill rollagas and tried to light some incense but it failed to light again. I think it's the butane regulator but it could be many things because it's a really finicky lighter.
:twak:
its quite a handsome lighter- circa 1960s- but it's not reliable in the slightest. so the bic (not pictured ) stepped in as a back up.

yes the orange thinge is a silicone sleeve to protect the sapphire lens of the titanium magnifying glass. It also came with a glow in the dark sleeve as well. Not all zippo has pattern on both sides, and I definitely got that one based on it was dual-sided design.
that's a rather nice-looking zippo you have there
Day 14That's an interesting topic all on its own, personally I too would prefer the No. 8 most of the time since I always love knife with full grip and lightweight.
No. 6, No. 7, No. 8
I know a lot of people quite like the No. 8 but I personally prefer the No. 7 for edc. This one here is a new one I have between a used set of No. 6 and No. 8 that I had sitting near by.
@comis, it's a shame about that Prince lighter as it's pretty good looking. But that is a sharp looking armored Zippo.Nice!
@MTSAK, hope the kids feel better soon. I hate it when the kids get sick.
Day 13
A buddy received the Community Builder Award from our masonic lodge this evening. Had to celebrate.

I find the jump in pocket bulk from the No. 7 to the No. 8 to be large for not much increase in blade length.
Love the ST300, and the Core! I have two of each. :tu:

Same, the No. 7 has risen to the top of the pile for carrying Opinels. I do like the 8 & 9, but the 7 just disappears in the pocket, as if I am carrying nothing. Thanks for this observation, funny I never really did measure the blade length for them both, I wish I didn't miss out on the Opinel challenge and probably would have done some comparison myself, that looks fun!

Got a 100 anniversary Imco from oversea, and from what I've learned about them(joint, flint wheel, writings, magnetic), it should be the Austrian made original.

A lesser known Japanese brand, Penguin, made this retro gas lighter.
Comis, thank you for the information on IMCO lighters, it is very helpful. I have posted pics of two Imco lighters, I have a third one that has the "come of" on it, yeah that is a big giveaway. I bought it anyway, it was a good price. :tu: :hatsoff: :cheers:
Day 15
These 2 are almost out of fluid. Going to make strikers out of them like ReamerPunch.

Awesome challenge all. I love all the different items being used.Great hearing from you, hope everything is alright!
I really wanted to participate but life had other ideas.
I did finally get to do an outdoor coffee. The fire starter was just a boring match, which there is no evidence of now.

Got to use my Zippo to start a fire using dried leaves as tinder.

A bit long, but good reach, holds lots of fluid, and is refillable too. :tu:

Clipper lighters are awesome. Removable sparker, and they're refillable too. :like:

New lighter day. Just got this Douglas Field S fluid lighter from Japan, and really like all the finer details they have for this trench lighter. It has o-ring for all the sealable places, including the spark wheel, wick, and fuel tank. I won't call this waterproof but it seems quite rainproof as is.

Got a new gadget today, and usb-c cigeratte lighter. All I need to do is to connect it to a power bank and press a button, the metal piece inside will glow red hot and ready to lit anything I place inside the ligther.
Day 21 of 30Those are a couple of cool lighters
Just a glamour shot.
[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]
That's a neat idea to wrap duct tape about the ferro rod, not only it's a decent tinder by itself and it's useful to mending stuff on the field when needed.
Point of clarification- my second Day 21 is actually Day 22.
Now back to our regularly scheduled posting.
Day 23 of 30
Stuff I carried today, except for the Kick, which lives in my toolbox. And I also had my Ronson Jet Lite after work. And I didn't carry the file either.
[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]
I have loved Clipper lighters for both those reasons.
Although, they changed the spark wheel a few years ago so the edges aren’t round but more star like. I can see it making it easier to spin in wet or cold conditions, but have also. Found they tend to wear and lock-up easier now.
I have also recently had an issue with the refill pin on a couple of my full-size Clippers being too big for the tip on my butane bottle. I don’t have enough to know if this is a common problem, but it is a little frustrating.
I have been eyeing one of those for a while. I’ll be interested in knowing if the o-rings help prevent evaporation.I probably need to do some experiment to compare a regular zippo side-by-side to this Field S, just to see which of this will evaporate less over time.
Reminds me of old car cigarette lighters
Those are a couple of cool lighters
Exactly, quite functional. One of the many ideas I picked up when it was circulated through the youtube creators.
Day 24Why all the good food is always greasy?
day 24I do have a similar container in dark olive green somewhere, but I do wonder what if the striking pad gets wet, will it lit?

Day 25Is it because it is not multi purpose like some other utility knife?
And my small Clipper. Just as good as the big one. :like:
I got this small Fiskars utility knife. Not good. :(

Is it because it is not multi purpose like some other utility knife?
I think the popluarity of a certain youtube video does bring a lot of attention to the Millwaukee utility knife in the past years, and I still have yet to get one.
It's supposed to be small, but it's really thick, and extremely heavy. And it's not as well-made as the regular Fiskars utility knife. This one has a lot of play when closed and when opened. But the pivot is not a screw I can tighten to reduce the play. Thanks for the feedback, if I were to get one, I am thinking maybe the Milwaukee one? It looks kinda promising, not super heavy and has a small 1/4 bit adapter which is quite handy.
The Gerber EAB is miles better than this, if you're looking for a small folding utility knife.
I carry mine in a Ziploc bag with the rest of my fire kit, so that keeps everything dry. Thanks for chiming in, Ziploc bag is definitely a great rainproof/waterproof solution for anything outdoor.
Day 25Carrying a dry strip inside the container is a good move, and sometimes I do miss those 'strike anywhere' matches, which I bet it will work even with a MT or SAK file...
Smart move Nate, the test confirms that the striker is completely destroyed when wet. I would have thought it would be more durable like wet/dry sandpaper. [ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ] [ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]
Day 26That light looks very floody. My first thought would be that you may have enough output power, but need a way to focus the beam.
I tried starting fire with this 8 W2 leds Hanklight (approximately 7000-8000 lumens?), but wasn't successful. I have seen it done on YT in the past, and my wild guess is the relative humidity is usually really high where I live and it's been raining for the past few days, so it's even harder to make it lit.

Day 25Of course you are going to talk flashlights, one of my weaknesses.
Imco keeps a new Hanklight D4K triple channel company.(that's a mouth full).
Really liking many of the Hanklight offerings--you could practically choose any popular led installed in the light with different functions/configuration. This particular one has dual white/Red/UV led all installed on the same chassis.
Thanks to the Anduril flashlight software, it does make it rather easy to operate, despite a complex configuration.
Day 25I have something similar called Spark-Lite, it is handy.

That light looks very floody. My first thought would be that you may have enough output power, but need a way to focus the beam.It surely is not as focused as those with big reflector, but the optics together with the W2 led do produce a bright, big round hotspot with ample spill light down range. Maybe somewhere in between a pure flood and a no-spill all spot beam?
I've never tried with a flashlight, but I suspect it has a lot to do with the focal point of the lense. I doubt any of my lights are strong enough to do it. None of my lights break 2000 lumens, most are even below 1000 lumens, But now I'm now wondering if multiple of them combined might work....hmm:popcorn: :D

Of course you are going to talk flashlights, one of my weaknesses.
is that a DT8 or DT8K? i've been looking at picking up one of those :ahhh
how do you like it?
I never really considered the larger tenacious and Rescilence knives, but after trying a smaller persistence when I need free shipping I'm now thinking I've been missing out haha
That's a DT8K with the 21700 battery and 8x W2s. Basically, it is just a hot-rod flashlight, mainly for the wow factor and put a smile on any flashaholics. :D I think DT8K is probably a better platform for this purpose, a little more battery power and mass to delay the step down just a bit longer. I never really did measure the actual step down time, but it is really short since the thermal protection probably kicks in rather soon.
For more practical purpose, I think any dual-channel D4V2, DT8, D4K or the latest D3AA will be great EDC choices.
(sorry for the de-rail, but once talk about flashlight, I just can't keep it under my hat...)
:like: Nice variety. I have been wanting a little twig stove thing like that. Do you find it useful?I absolutely love this stove and use it often. As the weather here gets warmer, you will probably see even more post with it.
Day 27The S2+is a nice light. I usually like 4000-5000k tint, but a good 3500k is also nice, definitely different if use to cool white lights.
Considering everyone is talking about flashlights here's one I just got recently. Just a S2+, I wanted to try out 519A down in 3500k, I quite like it actually. I should go get a beam shot comparing it to the other 519A I have.
Day 27I hope all past and you stayed safe

But everytime I see that stove in action from Sherry's post, it always put a smile on my face. :tu:
I wouldn’t be surprised if my past posts about it have contributed to other members purchasing one. I believe both comis and Explorer, who are both participating in this challenge also have one.
Day 29Wow, that's a nice collection of coins right there. I tried to save a few everytime I travelled to a new country, and enjoy learning some part of their histories thru collecting them.
Day 28 (make up)The Light My Fire Scout is my favorite ferro rod. It may not create the huge sparks like some rods, but they seem to go where I want and do the job.

this challenge made me realize that it's not as easy to start a fire with a mag glass as i thought so its awlways good to carry some backup matches or a bic.
