Title: EDC a different SAK every day for 31 days #10 - Soldier and Soldier-like
Post by: Syem on October 04, 2018, 12:59:41 AM
A round 10 months or 300 knives; well actually 304 knives. That's what I'll reach at the end of this month.  :ahhh

I've carried soldiers before in my 93mm Alox month but let's mix things up:
- Any soldier is OK (even other countries but only V and W knives)
- Any non-soldier model but with a toolset & structure identical to that of a Swiss Soldier's knife is OK. (Pioneer, Trekker, civilian 1908 or 1951 etc...)
- Only brands that have supplied knives to the Swiss army are authorized (i.e. no 1908 knock-offs but if the maker was an official supplier for the Swiss Army (wasn't just V and W) then it's good; even without a year stamp - refer to the lists on this website (https://www.couteaux-du-soldat-suisse.ch/J01/index.php/en/les-couteaux-du-soldat/les-modeles-1890) for the full brands list... and please someone post one of these uncommon non-W-or-V knives ::) )

The challenge is starting tomorrow, Thursday the 4th of October, but anyone can join until the 11th.

As far as incentives go for joining me in this month's challenge:
- There's a badge for "EDC a different SAK every day for 30 days" which you could get if you don't have it
- All pre 09 soldiers are 2 layers...you could get the Minimalist badge if you only carried those
- You could revel in the fact that you're joining me in this historical event that is "the first person to carry a different SAK every day for a whole year" (and document it?)
- I may decide to do a giveaway if multiple people join me this month (you don't have to do the whole month if you can't)
- I will definitely do a giveaway at the end of the year including everyone that joined in during the year (for at least a whole week) in the draw

I'll keep counting the knives towards my year so 273 to 304.

I'll be once more following the guidelines I set out in month #2 (copy-pasted below). (yada yada yada)

Code: (Some ground rules for the challenges:) [Select]
- Carrying/using multiple SAKs simultaneously is ok but we're counting the days and not the knives.
 - Need to carry at least one "not carried in this challenge yet" knife every day. (if you're not doing the whole year with me, feel free to reset your list after each month)
 - Since this will go on for at least a whole year, breaks are allowed but only due to carry restrictions while travelling or because of hospitalization. Just pick up where you left off once you're back.
 - Exact duplicates are allowed but not twice in a row. (do not count as exact duplicates: variations in generations/tool evolution, scale & crest - type & shape & color, wear/damage, inlays/engravings and the likes. Basically, as long as we can tell them apart, it's ok to post them twice in a row). Posting a pic of the duplicates together before carrying them is strongly suggested.

For the record, here's the list of topics for the previous 9 months:

Beautiful knife!  I'll only be following this one.  I wish I could participate, but I only have about 18 Soldier/like examples, so I'd have to start over at the top mid-way through the month.

Enjoy!

Just look at the wear, pitting and colour of that mooring eye. The blade and tools also showing their life. Both I think would have some great stories if only they could talk.

After two months carrying & posting each day a different knife... I withdraw... I don't have so many soldiers yet to complete this challenge :(
And I haven't finished the previous one

I'll post some pics later on this month

Its a soldier model nr 1908 not 1901. That you can see from the shape of the blade. That means its age is maximun 110 years :-)

That cross stamp was used between 1901 abd 1915, so your knife is between 1908 and 1915.

Thanks for the info!
I didn't notice the circle-less cross stamp on the 1908 page in my book.. And they don't show the blade shapes in there... I'll add this to the long list of labeling mistakes from the year ^^

Day 278

Wenger Soldier '1908' model - pre 1921

This one looks absolutely mint from top to bottom apart from the blade which definitely looks restored. The scales are just perfect and the brass is shiny all the way including inside the knife.
This leads me to believe this knife was restored by Victorinox(or maybe Wenger if this was done a while ago) with custom-made scales. What surprises me is the WK+ stamp... Does anyone know if Vic can apply the stamp to restored/rebuilt knives?

Also I dont think I've seen this front/back tang-stamp combination on non-civilian 1908s...

What a beauty  :like:  i suppose its also possible that it's been in a drawer all its life and used now and again to open boxes, i have an old race knife around the same age that looks brand new, it has horn handles so that might make a difference, i think it all depends on who owned it and what use it got.

Day 279

Victorinox Pioneer Nespresso #3 - Dharkan

Really beautiful!!!

I didn't know that you were considering pioneers as soldier-like knives... In that case I might have joined you this month as well
Thanks!

I did mention it in my OP though... Maybe it was a bit of a confusing OP...

Day 282

Elsener Soldier '1908' model - 1950

Don't know if they kept making them in 51 (like the 2008 overlap) or if its one of the last of these great knives...

Does anyone have any idea what that yellowish blemish could be on the back of the blade? Looks a bit like someone brassed this part...

Nice...I don’t know about the yellow spot. My first thought was a chemical stain. Will you be sending it in for a spa treatment?

That's definitely possible; Some other tools have minor yellow stains too...

About the spa I dont think I will at this point; ive just brought them 9 knives the othet day and I have more pieces in a critical state. This guy wouldn't need much and I probably could do it myself. Also, they cant easily service these older models as they have to break the scales to open the knives up. They can rebuild scales but it costs a lot and I'm not sure they can put back the army control stamp...

And I am doing a full year at the moment... Just in 12 separate threads :D honestly I dont think I'd be up for another year and as much fun as this is I'm looking forward to the end. Also I miss some knives I carried in month 1.

I'll probably do other challenges in the future but not of that scale :D

Nice! I forgot about those GAK. I've got one somewhere I think... I'll probably save it for month 11 :D I think I'll do " >100mm ". I have to check if I can do it without using too many 5+ layer knives so I still have enough to do a Stack Challenge for month 12.

Day 286

E-stamped Soldier '1908' model

The (probably) first non-Victorinox/Elsener/Wenger knife of the year. It is an official SAK (https://www.couteaux-du-soldat-suisse.ch/J01/index.php/en/les-couteaux-du-soldat/les-modeles-1908) and I'm not sure what that E stands for but as I understand its not Elsener. If anyone has any info on that I'd be very happy to know more.

My guess would be the E signifies a civilian model blade,  i see the WK but is it possible the other mark is a repair stamp if they changed the blade? i have seen a P but never seen an E before, nice knife  :like:

The P doesn't replace the tang stamp where it appears though, like this E example does.

About the E, it is listed in "others" (or not Victorinox nor Wenger) on the "couteau du soldat (https://www.couteaux-du-soldat-suisse.ch/J01/index.php/en/les-couteaux-du-soldat/les-modeles-1908)" website... Now theres also a W in that list but there are many others (including "R" and "II") so unless we find some definitive evidence about what these are there's no telling for sure...

I'll have another tricky one on Saturday... Way more awesome and quite intriguing :)

The Elsener Schwyz tang-stamp is a bit faint but still discernable...
The scales seem to be held onto the rivets by a kind of resin as if they'd been removed at some point. Or its just a weird mixture of solidified rust and wood-fiber goo... Any ideas?

Sorry about the lousy outside picture; That pop-up electrical panel had to be in the shot if I wanted the knife to be in the light and to see the faint blurry rainbow in the Jet d'Eau.

I`m pretty sure that E stands for Elsener, like W stands for Wenger. You can see those stamps also with a SMV Stamp on the other side.

The II stamp stands for second class elsener knives, about that I`m really sure.

Thanks for the information! I've just searched a bit and found this thread (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php?topic=67983.0) and the below video :
https://youtu.be/1YgnRYlARuE

Do you have other sources?
There seems to be quite a bit of speculation but I'm thinking the theory in the thread is quite realistic; E and W-stamped knives were made by other swiss makers which sent knives to Elsener or Wenger for quality control. As for the R the video states it is believed to be Röthlisberger, another big member of the SMV.
I don't see any reason why Elsener and Wenger wouldn't use their normal tang-stamps (like on the other thousands of knives) and the fact some come with the SMV stamp reinforces this line of thought.

The P doesn't replace the tang stamp where it appears though, like this E example does.

Good point, i failed to notice that  :tu:

It's home from its Swiss holiday  :dd: Props to Victorinox repair department, excellent job, i'm delighted with it  :salute:

I don't see any reason why Elsener and Wenger wouldn't use their normal tang-stamps (like on the other thousands of knives) and the fact some come with the SMV stamp reinforces this line of thought.

The problem with soldier knives (and all vintage swiss knives) is, that not much certified info is available. Also the common and known books contain some false informations. Why? Because of the lack of certified infos, everybody is looking for hints and sometimes, the hints lead to a wrong direction. For example the R should stand for Roethlisberger. You see a R on a vintage soldier blade, than you`re looking for a knife maker that name starts with an R. And because Roethlisberger is the most known, hubbil says its maybe Roethlisberger. Fact is, at that time, there were many other swiss knife makers with a name that starts with an R. For example ROTH, RIETHMULLER, ROLLI, RIZZI, RENZ, RAIS. The factory of Roethlisberger is very mall by the way, compared to the facilities of elsener or wenger. So I dont see any evidence that those knives with the R are made by Roethlisberger. By the way, I have never seen a 1908 soldier knife with just a R on the blade - but I`ve seen some of them with Victoria on the front side and a R on the other side.

What I heard (no evidence) is, that during the days of the SMV, the knife makers worked together as an unit to supply the army with the amount of knives they ordered. The price was fix, so they wanted to produce them as cheap as possible. They split the production to different companies. So one company produced the awl, another one the blade, some smaller campanies assembled the knives and so on. Because they worked as an unit, they put the SMV logo to the front. The letter on the back was there to track the knives back when there was any problem with it later. Maybe it was like this, that the bigger companies like elsener and wenger produced most of the parts of the knives and send them to the smaller companies for assembling. After that they went back for quality control, that means for a small knife maker, knives with a W back to wenger, knives with an E back to elsener. Then they sent the knives to the army.
So thats why I think E stands for elsener and W for wenger, but that does not mean, that the whole production was made by those companies. Maybe the smaller companies didn`t have the capacity to assemble the ordered numbers from the army, so wenger and elsener made some totally in-house productions and because those knives were not part of the SMV as a unity, they marked them only with E or only with a W.

Victorinox changed the name quite a few times. Over 100 different tang stamps are known.

Day 288

Elsener Soldier '1961' model - red 1973

Freshly arrived... I bought it "blind" (just a closed blurry pic from the top in a lot with other SAKs) and got rather lucky; Except for the slightly reshaped 1973 (!!) blade, all the tools are in great condition.

Gorgeous! Well done! I've had mixed results with sending them red OC knives... Sometimes I get brand new red OC scales and sometimes they put back the old worn ones even though I asked them to replace the scales.

Well that's certainly very interesting and makes a lot of sense. Thanks for sharing!

I was wondering if maybe Victorinox has an historian which may know more about this aspect of the 1908 model production. It also occured to me that the SMV may still exist (101 years commemorative knife (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php?topic=78653.msg1772460.msg#1772460)) and that there may exist some records about these production methods and mechanisms...

Day 289

Forges L & C Vallorbe Soldier '1908' model - 1908

It obviously has the scales of an 1890 model but due to the clip-point blade I'm calling it a 1908. Due to the fact its sharing these features with both I'm going to assume it must have been one of the first 1908 models made by this knifemaker. There surely must be an interesting story behing this knife but as usual we are left to guess and wonder :)

Funny thing, it has 5 army control stamps. 1 WK, 2 very clear circle+cross and 2 much fainter circle+cross. All "on top" of each other.
I realize i dont have many 1951 models... Still missing a Grilon... I wish someone would post one of these

As this weekend was my mum's birthday, I decided to carry her BYSak for a couple of days.

1908, P48, Wenger Delémont tang stamped

It's really an impressive tool :climber:

Gorgeous pictures for an awesome knife! These are so robust and feel so steady in one's hand. Drawback is the weight...

Birthyear SAK for my parents...thats a great idea. Thanks.  :tu:
‘35 was my dads year of birth. That’s cool. Enjoy!
Nice! Didn't expect I'd land on the right year right after you said it'd be a nice gift for your parents...

When the book THE KNIFE AND IT'S HISTORY was written on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Victorinox I ordered one and the knife came with the book.

Very cool! Thanks for sharing!

:like:  The soldier liked his knife so much he kept it after service and here it is so many years later, if only we knew it's history  :tu:
Actually, the 1908s marked Victorinox or Wengerinox are civilian models with stainless steel blade (and tools?) as opposed to the army's carbon steel.
These civilian models were accepted during controls of soldiers' equipment...
This 35P specifically has no army control stamp on the front scale and I'm really wondering where it got the 35 from. Did they maybe stamp these knives after controls?

I know - dad was ‘35 and mom is ‘37. My dad didn’t even see his 50th and passed from a brain tumor. But those two years will be buys of opportunity if they pop up!  :tu:

Nice ‘53...there is a Wenger ‘57 Grilon on Ebay right now.  Wish it was a ‘56, and I would have bought it myself so I would have a matching BYSAK by both! :tu:

According to this website, https://www.couteaux-du-soldat-suisse.ch/J01/index.php/en/les-couteaux-du-soldat/poincons-speciaux , the additional stamps were added after repairs. The examples show 2 cross-in-circle on top of the WK stamp.
On my piece maybe the first pair stamped was too faint so they did it again. We can ser that the WK was there 1st.

Well... I've done it again... I've done 2x day 290. I'll skip 301 and go straight to 302 to compensate. Tomorrow's day 303 will be the 31st of this month (and therefore the last day of month #10, it won't be day 304 as I mentioned in my OP). To my defense this has been an extremely stressful month and quite the emotional roller-coaster...

Here it is then...

Day 302

Victorinox militarised civilian '1908' model - 38P

For lack of a better description... A WK-stamped and P-stamped stainless steel 1908...

I've heart about then using civilian stainless versions to backfill orders but I've never seen one. Thanks Ollie  :like:
I hope you're all good and that you'll have plenty of time to de-stress  :salute:

Thanks to you all for your support! We've reached #31 for month 10. Next month I turn 33, I should become a dad (if baby-boy isn't late) and I'll be carrying the longest knives of my collection.

Day 303

Elsener Soldier '1961' model - 1966
