Title: Grathrs OBOC thread
Post by: Grathr on October 04, 2015, 10:34:28 PM
Day 1-3:
forgot about the whole thing

Day4:
Finally connected all the dots and understood why there where so many new Off brand October challenge threads....

Here is my tool of choice:
A SAKalike made in solingen.
Its a good quality tool, but not quite on par with Victorinox.

The first thing that I had to do with it was sharpen the blade. A few swipes over a Fallkniven CH4 stone, and it was ready to go.

Day 7:
Used the Sol to practise a little fire making.
I used the awl to scrape magnesium and to light the fire.
The kindling is washdryer lint.
It worked great, and took me less than a minute.

Oh, Grathr. I feel SO bad that you're stuck with this terrible tool that I would... out of the utter KINDNESS of my heart, trade my exquisite Coghlan's 7-Function Army Knife for this wretched thing you're stuck with. :D

I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that this isn't going to work, but hey, never hurts to try.

So is that a black oxide tool, or did they shell out the big bucks for DLC coating?

Its painted, isnt it?

Oh, Im suffering big time here. Its horrible to be stuck with this nice tool of good quality, with functioning implements. And worst of all, it actually looks good too!
But I have bonded with this tool, so I can not trade it. :D

Day 8:
Some minor cutting tasks and tightening a few screws with the phillips and bottle opener.
I also made this very primitive mask for the Axe King hawk. Sol's blade did the cutting, and the awl made the holes.

I spent the weekend canoing with a buddy. I had the Sol with me the whole time, but it did not see much use. The hawk saw plenty of action cutting and prosessing firewood though.

The last couple of days, Sol has opened a few packages and attempted to loosen a couple of worn out phillips screws. It failed on the screws, but I cant blame that on the Sol. However the canopener driver on a 111mm SAK I found in a nearby cupboard, loosened them right away.

I got some cheapo emergency matches in the mail I wanted to test. So I made some small fireprep with Sol. Sol's blade has a 90 degree spine, wich I tried to use it to scrape some tinder. Bad idea. After some scraping the blade developed quite a bit of sideways bladeplay.
The matches actually worked though.

I also took some pics of it :

Today Sol did some basic maintenance on "Navi" the house droid, wich it did quite well.

I once again confirmed that I prefer the small driver on the tip of the canopener on Vic SAKs over the back phillips on Sol. But it got the job done, so I cant complain.

Day 19:
Im switching to this GAK by B&H wich I got from Lowtech some time ago.

First I had to sharpen and clean it. It realy needed a new edge, so I gave it a new one using a rotating wetstone. I did it freehand, but it turned out ok.

Then it helped me doing some food prep:
Wich ended up in this leftover stew:

First impressions:
Its nice and tight.
If my memory serves me right, Lowtech repeened it before he sold it, as it had some play originally.
The awl is a real nailbraker, but I can get it out.
Im a little sceptical about using the combo opener/ saw as a phillips. I gave it a try on some large phillips screws, and it does work, just not super great.  However it has no saw cover, and wont close properly if it has (i tried with a cover from another GAK), so I'll be a little worried about my fingers while using the combo tool with force.

Today the GAK cut me a nice walking staff. The saw worked OK but tended to clog up. The blade cut and shaped it like a dream.

I went for a long walk today. The GAK did some firemaking and sausagestick making today.
The GAK is actually very good tool for woodcraft: The blade has a good size. It has a saw and a big sharp awl. It has a good size handle but is fairly thin and is easy to pocket carry.

Not very cold. At the time I made the fire it was aprox 6 degrees celcius. Unusually warm for this time of year.

I tried to operate the GAK with gloves today. I could open the blade and cork screw easily, the saw/combo tool with some dificulty and the awl I could not open at all.
