Title: What are your favorite SAK blades & other tools?
Post by: NorCalJim on October 11, 2017, 11:57:18 PM
BLADES:
I love the variety from Classics on up and want access to all of them but there is something special about the 93mm Pioneer blade.

OTHER TOOLS:
1. Magnifier for small print
2. Inline awl for all kinds of things
3. Inline Philips driver

I am very interested in your blade & tool preferences. In an older topic thread, many seemed to prefer the small blade on various 91mm SAKs instead of the large blade (my preference is the large blade).  Among the large blades, the 93mm Pioneer series blade impresses me the most.

Regarding other tools, it is hard to find any I don't care for but the pharmaceutical spoon and fish scaler come the closest. I imagine for most of us, there are tools that draw us so strongly, that it makes the sale on one SAK over another.  I am very drawn to SAKs with a magnifier, which shares the layer with an inline Philips driver.  I am a huge fan of the inline awl from the Pioneer series and wish they were somehow part of the Explorer and Swiss Champ.

Those are my favorites--what's yours?

Jim

91mm small blade, Rambler Phillips screwdriver, 91mm pliers, and Spirit pry bar and chisel. Love them all.

I most often carry a 91mm SAK. Currently it's the Swiss Champ for EDC. Probably my favorites, most used tools on a SAK are:
Cap lifter/flat driver
Can opener/small screwdriver
Inline Phillips
Scissors
Pliers
Small blade

The magnifier and the ballpoint pen are what sold me on upgrading from my Craftsman to the Swiss Champ. But I don't yet use them daily. I use the above listed tools almost daily.

I love the polished finish of all of the tools. I think the bottle cap opener is exceptionally good - far better than Leatherman' s. I have to set the leatherman lifter just so, and lift it elbow-up or I pierce the cap. Victorinox bottle openers, at least the ones on 91mm' s, work well without having to stage the set up or express care on the lift. It can be done without a thought.

I like the backspring Philips head despite its limitations because before I had a SAK with a backspring Philips, I was trying to get the little driver on the can opener to work.

Wouldn't mind seeing the bale come back. Classic.

All the tools on vic fieldmaster (my current EDC).

I am also currently in the process of assembling a 84mm version of fieldmaster. The only tool I am missing are the scissors. Oh, and plus scales for 84mm sak. I'll have to make or buy a pair of those.

And I can't wait they finally release farmer X.  :ahhh

Also a back scratcher, make-shift fork, and a visual aid for when I forget what number comes after 2.

The small pen blade; I probably use it as much as all other tools in total. Both types of Vic awls are awesome. And the bottle opener, since I love beer and it's a really good opener (and pry-thingie).

My favorite tools are those that perform multiple functions (like the combo tool) or perform a single function exceedingly well (like the scissors).

Which is why the 84mm Golfer and the Compact have a special place in my heart.

Hands down - The scissors   :tu:   :like:  :salute:

They are such awesome tools (even the 58mm version) and so useful for so many things - definitely my most used tool

In my view, they are the defining tool of a SAK !! I would hardly ever carry a SAK that does not have them.
To me the classic SAK - The Spartan - has a tool missing  :td:
And there are lots of lovely Alox models - which do not do it for me, due to missing scissors (prior to the PX of course)

Which is all quite amusing  ;)  as I know some folks here do not like them, or see the need, and someone over in the other thread has even nominated them as his least favourite tool   :o

It was a glaring oversight for me to leave scissors off of my favorite tools!

On the 91mm: small blade, pliers, cybertool bit driver and metal file.  93mm: electrician blade and inline awl.  On the Spirit: scraper/chisel and the scissors.  58mm: combo phillips/cap lifter tool and the cut and picker/package opener.

91mm small blade, scissors, and can opener, I use these 3 tools most often and in that order.  :tu:
