For a lot of my life, I’ve carried some form of pen with me (space pen, G2), but I realized a more valuable piece to me would be a small pencil.
With a pencil, you can mark on lumber, drywall, and other stuff a pen won’t do.
I’m looking for a good pocket sized pencil, but probably mechanical, with thick pencil lead. Most preferably more space pen sized, but if there isn’t one if these, I can always stick to golf and shortened lumber pencils.
Any reccomendations? Seems like an oddity in the pencil world, but wasn't sure if you guys knew about anything :dunno:

I’ve always used the Faber Castell mechanicals. I’ve never shortened one, but it should be easy to do? ???

Looks nice :tu:

I edc a permanent marker for exact those reasons, + a sharpie works on plastic/metal and other smooth surfaces
-
I carry one of these at work, works great as a marker (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190204/40a9565b52e64c9ece97b1b663a1ecb1.jpg)

And you can always pair a sharpie with a pen :tu:

Ok, I did not want to cut down my Faber Castell, but I took a cheap $3 mechanical and trimmed it to 4 inches. 2 minute job. Neat idea! :hatsoff:

Koh-I-Noor makes one I like a lot which seems to check a lot of boxes here: https://www.cultpens.com/i/q/KH54673/koh-i-noor-versatil-5228-short-clutch-pencil-2mm
You could also go for really stubby and opt for a 5.6 mm model primarily used for sketching, like https://www.cultpens.com/i/q/KW30927/kaweco-sketch-up-pencil-brass-56mm
-
I’ll have to take a look at that :tu:

I’ve been thinking of switching to a pencil rather then a pen cause well, lead doesn’t leak. But the ones I have been looking into aren’t mechanical, just use your typical golf pencil,, a bullet pencil.. basically the same as a space pen, half size then doubles to normal size when in use,,

A brand named Kaweco also makes a short mechanical pencil.

Thanks for the feedback
I’m liking that Koh-I-Noor :tu:

I used the orange 48 for work - writing my readings on the metal top of the a/c roof top units. Fits great in my pocket. The 5353 is also very good. And soft! More of a rubber coating. The bottom one is just a tad to heavy for my liking...and I like heavy pencils...these are all 5.6mm.
-
Now this is my current EDC clutch pencil a Caran d’Ache 2mm Mario Botta - the others in my last post are also clutch. A bit more pricey but oh so worth it!
-
Lot of great recommendations guys :like: I use a 2mm clicky lead holder by Helix for work and also a 0.7 Pentel Twist Erase III  they are both used for different tasks and unless I am making marks on a concrete footer then they meet all my requirements :tu: Will try and get pics of them later :salute:

I took a close up of the lead and you can see that they are quite a bit different in size  completely different set of tasks for each :tu:

Pencil made from rebar, would go well with certain MT?

I did not believe you Steinar >:D Had to check the link...wow, they really did drill out a rebar for that pencil :salute:
That's extreme..even ships in a tube made of concrete. I think the postage may be more than the 46,00 € but I like it :like:
-
OK...so I just need to find someone able to drill a hole through 5 inches of rebar, and I can put the guts of a 9,20 € Koh-I-Noor in it

Cool, I basically did the same with a 6” bolt, but put a pen in it..

it must have been some serious equipment to bore the bolt that distance - industrial lathe? But I guess that's why you're called MadPlumbarian :tu:

Believe it or not, a vice with a hand drill and a 4” long 1/8” drill bit,

That's super impressive. I can't find a smiley for "respect" but you earn it for that build. :salute:

Lol, thanks, see now that’s mad, just eyeballing a drill bit! But I got it on the first try, now the second, *cough cough* um I missed
Half way through it came out the side, tossed that bolt in the trash..

I always loved a knurled grip, and while it’s not knurled I grinder the thread a little smoother to give it something similar, beside, if it gets dropped or even runned over by a car the only thing that will break is that plastic tip which is easy to replace being a bic pen..
I sooo want a bolt pen, well that is, but a bolt action pen, one so simple yet the one I really want stopped making them, I wish I could have just an hour on a lathe..
