Another interesting little surprise at the SHOT Show this year came from the Gerber table. Apparently, it also surprised the folks at Gerber because they only mentioned it after we asked specifically what that funny little thing on the back counter was! It turns out that it's called the Gerber Artifact, and I have to say that it looks pretty darned cool!
Basically it looks like the offspring of a Superknife and an Atwood Prybaby, and seems to have the best features of both. There's a prybar, bottle opener, phillips screwdriver and the tiny knife even locks open.
Another neat feature is that like the Superknife, the blade is replaceable. Rather than a razor blade like the Superknife, the Artifact sports an X-Acto type blade and can be opened one handed. While I don't think we got an estimated MSRP on it, it seems more likely to be in line price wise with the Superknife as well.

I can see myself getting a few of these when they come out- they look like they'd make great stocking stuffers!

That's a cool little tool! Gerber seem to be doing some things right at least, this and the Flik are very impressive.

That is a neat little gadget there.
-
That's a natty little thing, isn't it :)
-
I really like it. It felt good in the hand and opened reasonably well for such a small, inexpensive tool. I only hope that carries through when it hits full production.

Looks like you could take the knife off, if you wanted to make it legal to carry in the UK as a bottle opener/pry bar.
-
You certainly could, but remember the blade is all of about 2cm long. Even though it locks, I doubt an LEO would really concern himself too much with it unless it's covered in bloody remnants of a nun's habit!
Def
-
Guess I didn't notice at the time, but is that a phillips screwdriver cut into the end?

It sure does look like one!

Shoulda looked a little farther than that Flik! :D

Whoops! :-[ Ahh well, just proves that I never read your posts carefully anyhow :D
Hmmmm...it does seem odd though that they don't mention the phillips on the packaging.

They did- look at the diagram. It looks like they called it a "Cross Driver" rather than a phillips though.
You sure you are ok to fly Bob? Maybe you should try and grab some shut eye!

:P

That looks awesome! Maybe us UK lot can finally get hold of a decent prybar at an affordable price! :) They have seemed to cram a lot onto that tiny thing.
Me likes, A LOT! :D
-
Yeah I can see this one going far if the price is right on it. I wanted to abscond with one from the booth but they wouldn't let me. They insisted they didn't have too many, but I saw quite a few. :twak:
Maybe Dennis at Gerber-Tools.com will hook us up when they are released!

I hope so! :) I'm sure a few of us over here would be keen to get their hands on one.

Should I ever get back to my own computer I'll be sure to point it out to him and have him harass his rep until he gets them in!

Well count me in for one! :)
Have you progressed any more in your travels yet?

I've made it about 300 meters from the gate I spent the night at to the gate that my plane will be at in a mere three and a half hours. :ahhh
Nothing ever leaves Chicago on time and I only have 40 minutes to get my next plane in Washington so I'm concerned that I may be in Washington until tomorrow.

:-\
Well fingers crossed that you make your connection ok. And I thought transport over here was bad! :o
-
I could have gotten a hotel for only $70 last night... but it was one of those things where there's too much time to stay, but not enough time to go. I couldn't see paying $70 for the few hours I would use a room, plus I'd have to go through security again- it just wasn't worth it.
Def
-
:gimme: That looks like a very handy little gadget indeed, and since it is from Gerber it should be nice and inexpensive.
-
That's what I am hoping for. I am already sending messages to Dennis at www.Gerber-Tools.com to see if he can supply us with them ASAP!
Def
-
I really like that Kinda like a widgy bar on steroids. I can see getting a few of these to stash around the house.
-
Woohoo! Moteng says that the MSRP is $13.76! http://www.moteng.com/Products/ItemDetail.asp?sid=&ItemID=33223
-
Is it made out of FRN? It would be cool if it were Grivory. Thats what the Cold Steel Nightshade series are made from!
-

I think even a poor chap like me could stretch to that! :D Hopefully Dennis will be able to supply them to us all soon. :)

Wait a minute. How is that thing illegal in the UK?
I really dont want this to get into a polital discusion, but why?

It's not illegal to own, just to carry around without a good reason cos the blade locks open.
-
Oh OK so it is just a locking blade. I guess I should have relized that due to the Spydie UK pen knife.

I sooooooooooooooooooo want one of those Spydie's. But they are real expensive. :(

They are really, really nice, but even though there dead legal, you'd get tuged on the spot if you had one on ya ::)

I know ::) They should inscribe the blade with "Legal carry for the UK" or something. Not that that would help I am sure.
-
Belive it or not, there is talk of the new spydie urban saying just that :)
-

Perhaps Spyderco can read my thoughts. :D
That would be real cool. Will still be ridiculously expensive over here though. :(

Simple answer yes, but there are I think 3 options available (don't quote me) but I expect the cheapest price over here will be about £75 - 80.

Any ideas when? This year?

Probably, but to tell the truth, I'm a bit out of the loop since i spend all my time here these days ::)

They have brought out the UKPK in Foliage Green and Safety Orange just recently, but i think there is a new model coming out called the Urban that is still UK legal but slightly smaller. I think thats right anyway.

Cheers for that. ;)

No problem, i'm quite excited by the Urban, and hopefully it will be a little cheaper than the UKPK seeing as its slightly smaller. It also looks less "aggressive" probably due to the colour of the scales, the orange and green UKPK's do look very nice though.

I hope so. I have been looking for a OH UK legal EDC folder for a while and apart from the UKPK and the CRKT Edgie I have been unable to find any others.
-
Really looking forward to that Artifact. Let us know when you see them for sale.
-
For some reason it strikes me as a work-in-progress, but that could just be the X-acto blades, I've never like box cutters.
-
Actually I think the X Acto blades are the point of a knife like this. Following the rousing success of the SuperKnife a few years ago that combined tactical knife features like OH opening and locking mechanisms with standard razor blades, and Gerber's eventual release, recal and re-release of the EAB, I think this is a logical step for them.
One of the problems with such a small blade is that it can often be difficult to sharpen and Gerber has solved that problem by making it replaceable. I think it's a pretty smart idea, especially considering the number of different types of X Acto blades available through the hobby community.
Here's a good example:
http://www.a2zhobbies.com/Xacto/Blades/
With a list like that you could carry what works best for you, or a different blade every day or for different circumstances.
Def
-
Horses.
I'll stick with my X-acto pen.
Ah well, time will tell how well this widget sells to folk more open minded than myself.
-
Dennis at www.Gerber-Tools.com says he should have the Artifact in stock next week.
Def

That's good to hear. :) I'll have to keep an eye out.

I WANT ONE . but this time I will hold my order....I don't ewant to go trough the PAIN like last time ...... :ahhh

Hello everyone,
Does anybody know when this thing is supposed to come out? and what stores will be selling it? I've checked the Gerber website, and they have no information. Thanks.
-Papacat.
-
According to Gerber-Tools.com, they are held up for a while. It's unknown when they'll start appearing.
Def
-
Nuts! I was hoping to get my hands on one.
-
Lets hope they are just held up for a little while and not been discontinued by Gerber, they do look a very handy little thing to have.

Well,
I emailed Gerber and was surprised at the quick response:
"Hi Mike,
Thank you for contacting Gerber Blades. The Artifact is actually available but appears to be on back-order status at this time. I suspect that we will be seeing more arrive within the month.
Sincerely,
Donda Burnett
Consumer Affairs"
There you have it. They say a month, so that translates as at least six months.

ill have to scratch some skin to have that a.s.a.p :D
btw any experiences with that "crossdriver".is it some"about"size or ph1 or ph2?
-
The phillips is cast to shape. A little rough, but not bad. It is bigger, closer to a #2 in size than a #1.
-
good to know, since i dont se #1´s too much so numBah two fits me just fine.
