Nice guys. Now hopefully they make one that has the saw and scissors.A Farmer X?
That's us mobile
This sure was a long time in the making. Considering how long it took women to get the vote in Switzerland though, i think we should be quite happy.
One of these days I'll get one that isn't a shelf queen, meanwhile these are the two I've got.

Very nice and what I really like are the Torx head bolts.
Actually the point was they are not of equal importance. As such it seems a mircle we got the Pioneer X. :think:This sure was a long time in the making. Considering how long it took women to get the vote in Switzerland though, i think we should be quite happy.
Yes women's suffrage and the Pioneer X, are of equal importance.
I've never had an alox model before, but this is very tempting...

Glock 26 9mm?
I'm awaiting arrival of a Pioneer X this week. I would think this model would be as popular, if not more popular as a Farmer.
Now maybe we might see a Pioneer Pruner X or Pioneer Electrician X?
I would also like to see a small blade Pioneer X (electrician, pruner or sm. pen blade) and a hefty combo tool instead of the bottle opener.
Did someone ask for a Farmer X?(http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a200/shark_za/Knives/92F24931-178B-4600-A2D6-1C446035E20D_zpsnd2qvb4b.jpg) (http://s11.photobucket.com/user/shark_za/media/Knives/92F24931-178B-4600-A2D6-1C446035E20D_zpsnd2qvb4b.jpg.html)

Now we just need more color editions of it, right? :D
Pioneer X arrived today. If the nail nick was switched to the opposite side because of production concerns (differentiating 3mm vs 2.5mm pivot holes) maybe they can find a different production solution and return the nail nick to the expected location. It is rather odd to try to open it and I'm not sure it was a very good decision to change it for production reasons. If they do decide to switch it back in the near future, we may have a future collectible.
I'd still like to see and "X" version with a small blade (pen blade, electrician's blade or similar).
An interesting detail that can be seen in the pictures of the Pioneer X or read about in the discussion in the thread at the Swiss Forum involve the scissors themselves. For those who have not wandered over to the other thread, the detail is that the nail nick is on the opposite of the scissors than the regular 91mm line. At least one person did not care for it as it cut across the slant on the outside of the scissors. Unless one has the scissors open and staring at them, say in a photo, I don't think the visual purity matters, and once it matters I don't think I care. [;)] I think I prefer it on the outside rather than an inner face anyway. There is a lot of speculation as to why that was done. One reason I recall being advanced was to keep the scissors straight at the factory so they do not get mixed up. The other reason was so that one could install them on the new longer 111mm One Handed Soldier and still reach the nick.
I don't recall anyone bringing up the ergonomics as a reason, but that would be why I like the new position. Now all tools open from one side except the straight line awl which is tucked away on the other side anyway. So now when I grab the knife with my thumb on the emblem or shield, as a right hander, there is no confusion. I am ready to open any tool. (If one is left handed your thumb would be on the same side but on the end away from the shield.)
In the 91mm line the standard position of the nick always leads to a bit of confusion for me. I imagine some frequent SAK users may avoid this, but I feel it requires a bit of concentration when you grab the knife to orient it as both the blade and the scissors are visually long. Now the blade and the scissors may open toward different ends of the knife, but from the same side. I like this better. Moreover, as I mentioned, now you grab the knife one way to open any tool except the awl and that seems natural anyway.

Aloxia is a common disease in this area of cyberspace Harley, alox produces powerful symptoms in the afflicted including feelings of euphoria and extreme compulsive episodes. Aloxia has no known cure. It is treatable, but it appears to be something that can only be managed by making the disease progessively worse. Aloxia starts with a small benign object, usually around 93mm in length, but sometimes even smaller, there have been cases of a single 58mm object growing into a full-blown multi-dimensional obsession. There are reports of the disease growing beyond many boundaries both financial and physical, sometimes dragging innocent bystanders into the disease or horrifying others with it's bizarre symptoms. So far there have been no reported casualties, but there have been some unfortunate mishaps, and mild social awkwardness is fairly common in sufferers, who seek comfort from other victims via the interweb. Using slang terms such as 'aloxaholic', etc. are common indicators of those who are aware of this uncatastrophic disease, and may possibly have Aloxia themselves.
Tell'ya something else, I plan to buy at least one more Pioneer X.

The PX has been a good EDC model for me so far. Since I have been using the awl for most of the things I use the small blade for, and not needing a corkscrew lately, I barely miss my Climber. I also like the heavier main blade and openers on the 93's, so it's been working out well. Maybe I'll break my Explorer's record with this one, only 7 or 8 years to go! :)
Couldn't help myself :D

Perfectly normal.
I do it pretty regular.
Question. How wide is the X compared to the Farmer?
Found myself thinking about the following mod for outdoor use: Pioneer X minus the openers layer, plus a saw.

How about, the pioneer x, but, without the scissors ?Are you going for your 'mischief' badge dks? If so , Grant give him his mischief badge for all our sakes.
Most people carry a classic or a manager or a micra anyway, thus they do not need extra scissors..
I am surprised nobody had done this mod yet ....
When Victorinox comes out with that product, remember that I thought of it first, here at MTOJust for you dks, here's my hastily modded Victorinox Pioneer X with scissors removed, Wenger SI scale and hollow rivet added:
now make a few hundreds and sell them, before Victorinox steals the ideaI have to come up with a snappy name first. Any ideas? How about 'VictoriNOT Pioneer X'
well, Pioneer X is the model with scissors, the X meaning that it is not suitable for minors, so, maybe, if you take out the scissors you can just call it "Pioneer"That is a stupid name - it will never sell with a name like that. Come on dks, up your game or this ship is sunk before it sets sail.
you are right, Pioneer just sounds too american....How about a name made up of one of the 4 languages of Switzerland?:
Maybe the "Alps", or "Grant" :P or the "Swiss" or the "Red Cross".....
Maybe we need a poll??
:tu:You choose the name dks - after all it was your idea in the first place.
:tu:You choose the name dks - after all it was your idea in the first place.
Maybe it should be named 'Descissored Knife - Swiss' in your honour? You're welcome.
Another great idea! You are on fire today my friend.:tu:You choose the name dks - after all it was your idea in the first place.
Maybe it should be named '(http://Descissored Knife - Swiss)' in your honour? You're welcome.
OK, if this is what the public wants, I will accept the honour :salute: Maybe we can just shorten the name, using maybe the first letters from each word, to make it easier for non native english speakers?
The DKS :salute: :salute: :salute: :salute: :salute: :salute:I'm not sure - I've only ever seen plain silver. We could make enquiries with some of our forum modificationers. I have some nice paints here in the U-Boat. Mostly grey but I'm sure there was some red and blue as well.
a slimmer, better thought, more robust, potentially cheaper, more aerodynamic version of the pioneer x..
Maybe we can make it in other colours too? Blue, red.... Can this be done with alox?
I am thinking we have to much free time.Who has more time: The posters who post the elaborate, drawn out posts, or the posters who read the elaborate, drawn out posts?

While we are talking business ideas dks, I have made a great new discovery. The two places I know of in Europe that have coloured Pioneer Xs are these, I have the LCSAS one, as I liked the Swiss flags on the nameplate on the back:

I'm pretty sure LCSAS, at least, will deliver to the US
In the latest Swiss Bianco newsletter he's said the US store will be selling coloured Pioneer X models, but without the key ring nub (to be different, I guess). These models will have Swiss Bianco on the blade, but no nameplate logo (I'm not keen on blade markings myself).

Still waiting because I thought one of them would have received a shipment of colored Pioneer X's by now. I even left comments to both companies on social media to do so. I don't see why they would not... maybe Victorinox is taking their time, they do seem to treat N. The ones from LCSAS don't have a blade stamp, but instead have the nice Swiss flags logo on the back scale (see my pics). They cost 55 CHF, which is about $55, plus shipping, but LCSAS do ship to the USA. Only one left of their current stock in red, though!:

Only took a few days to receive mine from Switzerland to the UK, so at least they seem to send them out quite fast. I think the LCSAS one is the nicest of all the coloured Pioneer X versions I've seen, don't think you'll regret the purchase!

Count me in. Bought it used, it already had the scales done and stone washed blades. Still warming up to it because I'm used to seeing shiny blades::like:

Pioneer X or modded 91mm scissors?
I like the look. It's kind of a lighter wash than some I've seen, at least the way it shows up on my screen. And I love that green! Is that the dunkelgrün or darker? I can smell the mossy brook just looking at it. Nice knots too. Way beyond my comfort zone with paracord tying. Very nice and very new looking for a used one.

X or modded 91mm? Hmmmm  I never thought it could be a modded 91mm, but that does make sense. The seller called it a Pioneer X, so I just figured it was. The wash is pretty true to how the screen shows it, not too dark. I think it was the green scales that made me love it most...though I don't know which green it is.
The lanyard came with it. :tu:
My money is on it being modded cause the nail nick is on the opposite side from a factory Pioneer X  Still it is a very nice SAK and that green is lovely :dd: :like: :like:

Good eye. I was wondering if there was something that would make this stand out as a mod vs. genuine and I think you found it. :tu:

I thought it was a genuine Pioneer X that had the pin screws because they took it apart to stonewash the tools and anodize the scales green. Plus trusting the seller that it was an X.
Newbie mistake on my part. :twak:

IMO, the scissors are the best part of the pioneer. If all the tools I've been the most impressed with them. Mine got a work out today cutting lengths of paracord. Never even faltered. The capability of the scissors was never in question for me. It was the placement of the nail nick. Now that I've carried it a few days I've gotten use to it and actually like that I don't have to spin the knife around to access it.
Meant to tell you 4ever that we have a shiny new badge waiting for you when you finish the 30 day challenge :salute: :DHmm...I've never attempted a badge before. Might consider this one. It really is a lovely setup.

Grim and dark - even outside there's barely enough light to take photos.
That thing in the front is supposed to be green, though it looks coal black on my screen.
Red and grey are more photogenic - Schweizer Messer were right about moving their S to the blade...

Well, the clip doesn’t set flat on the scale. There is the adhesive strip. I’ll get a close up pic later and post it.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
One thing to remember here is I used a used clip. The clip was originally on something else and when I removed it I had to scrap the original adhesive strip. I bought some 3M strips and trimmed them to fit.
When first installed, the strip was very gooey and moveable. Once setting overnight it becomes very rigid, yet flexible enough.

When first installed, the strip was very gooey and moveable. Once setting overnight it becomes very rigid, yet flexible enough.

The same 3M adhesives as the original, the VHB?

Actually, no. I couldn’t find those so here is what I got. Seems to be doing fine so far.

Ok. Here are the best close ups I can get. I did not cut the strips perfectly but I don’t see any gaps.
I plan to order more of the Nite Ize clips for a few more of my ALOX units.

Gonna treat myself to a birthday present and get one of these or an alox mini champ, cant make up my mind :think:This is worth owning, IMHO. Feels like all business.

The keyring is really a hotspot. What was Victorinox thinking!
And now I understand why jaya doesn't like the scissors nail nick, it's too recessed and on the "wrong" side.
But I still really like this beast.
Both the PX and Minichamp Alox gets my vote... As to which one to get, really depends on priorities first... Then you can get the other, once pocket funds allows for it...Gonna treat myself to a birthday present and get one of these or an alox mini champ, cant make up my mind :think:This is worth owning, IMHO. I've got them both and they are both very desirable SAKs with differing capabilities. The question is which one do you need--a small multi-tool that packs many tools in a tiny package or a larger, heavier duty tool stressing a more useful size blade, scissors, inline awl and openers/drivers? The PX was my first Alox purchase and the only 93mm alox to offer scissors. For me, the larger, heavier duty PX is too much to give up.

It seems that most times that I need to use a blade, it's from a conventional 91mm Cellidor SAK. Well, yesterday I needed to cut some paracord and I had my Alox storage drawer out and the PX was the closest at hand...I am always impressed with these blades from the 93mm Alox SAKs! They feels so much more substantial than the 91mm blades. It does feel more robust and ready

what is up with the scissors nail nick? Just got mine and its kinda obnoxius.
ouch, I'm getting a little more used to it, sliding thumb nail into it from the end as opposed to a reg sak scissor, I had read about this a few times here, but was not ready for its weirdness

It's a bit fiddly, but I think one becomes accustomed to it after a while. At some point during my PX 30-day challenge, I stopped noticing it....and now the nail nick on 91mm scissors feels strange?

Yup, ran into the scissors nail nick "problem" this morning too. To an old codger like me (after all I'm way past my first half century ), this is going to take some time getting used to :DThey are exactly the same, except for nail nick position and pivot hole sizes...
Edit: cursory comparison between a PX and my SwissChamp reveals striking similarities between their respective scissors, with the notable exception of the position of the nail nick. Assuming that the rest (tang profile?) is identical between the two, I can see some mods on the horizon... (no, not of the red beauty, of course >:D).

Playing a B7add13 is easier than opening these things...
... I have tough nails but I had no trouble opening either way. Left thumbnail in the nail nick was easier though. It was noticeably easier than using the right thumb. At least for me.........YMMV.

Butch,
I've gotten to an age where I like to take a nap in the afternoon. Might be a short nap, but a little nap is nice. However, sometimes I have a dream. Sometimes a nice dream, one where I'm eating ice cream on a warm day while puppies play and tomatoes ripen in the sun. But sometimes the dreams aren't so pleasant. I had a bad dream the other day. In this dream I handed my nephew a standard flat-head/slotted screwdriver. He looked at me and asked where the "on" button was. The ground seemed to melt under my feet. Fortunately I woke up before anything more worrisome occurred.
Not sure why I mentioned that dream here.....maybe I need another nap..... ;)
That Buck looks nice!!

:tu:Nice to see your pic in the calendar :like: :like: :tu:
I remember purchasing a standard Pioneer X and having the belief that this would be my one and only Vic Alox purchase. At the time, I was fond of the Super Tinker and made frequent use of the blade and scissors tools. The Pioneer X was a SAK dream come true compared with the Super Tinker with better build quality and slightly larger blade. I couldn't imagine the need to get any more Alox SAKs.
Meanwhile, those in the Alox & Pioneer topic areas treated my declaration with amusement. I was told that there was no known cure for Alox Addiction and that it was just a matter of time before I came down with it. I never did come down with Alox addiction but I did end up with a storage container full of Alox SAKs.
My standard PX along with my MTO special edition red PX will soon be joined by black and blue PXs. This time, I am not claiming to be finished with any further purchases. I love it when waiting for something special to be delivered!

Lol, whatchu got against merit badges Jim?
I don't really get the scissors issue.
The bottle opener opens the same way, nail nick on the same side etc yet nobody complains about that one.

For me the caplifter opens up much easier, possibly due to the short radius or the scissor spring is stronger; also the nail nick is larger and deeper on the caplifter. My opinion, for what it's worth.
Agreed. I think a Farmer X would be a big seller. And, I know it can be done........You can show that puppy anytime you want. That is the one I would love to have in Alox.

Not joined the club yet. After reading AW post I'm not entirely sure I will just yet. If I happen upon one I pick it up but I don't think I'll pursue one.
It’s a bit intrusive, but no more than any other clip. Not bad really. You know it’s there but I wouldn’t take it off. Thanks for the information :like: :tu:

My Pioneer X, the lanyard ring was annoying, so I dremeled it away. It's a really sturdy knife and I like the fact it has scissors. But that nail nick... Why, oh why?
The weird thing about this knife is that it feels heavier than it looks like.

I am spending too much time here, my new, shiney, one and only alox knife which I really didn't need as my hiker has done a very good job of doing pretty much what I need on a day to day basis !
Ah my good man - but have you been preserving your blade's edge for necessary jobs? Opening packages in a manner that keeps glue off your blade? Opening clamshell packages in a safer way? Saving the point of your knife for when you really need to use it? Opening foodstuffs in a manner that doesn't raise an alarm? Opening finicky packages within seconds? Clipping loose threads without ruining your hem? Trimming your nosehairs minutes before meeting with the boss? I should think not sir! :hatsoff:
Welcome to the club.
Just cross your eyes for 3D.

Does anyone else become slightly annoyed with the scissors nail nick on the PX? I cut my teeth on the Fieldmaster so I always feel for the blade and can find the scissors after (if that makes sense). Perhaps I’m just being difficult or trying to find a reason to dislike the PX

Oddly enough, I am quite used to the nail nick on the PX scissors (such that the Champ scissors require some searching).Great explanation EB. Tried it and it feels natural, guess I was looking for excuses :twak:
I know exactly where to find it - I hold the knife "by the suspension clip" (in a manner of speaking for illustrative purposes) in the left hand, with the shield facing me. all the nail nicks are now facing me as well. So for the scissors, I go straight to the right side, middle layer.
What might be awkward is - in that orientation, the right hand would have to arc over the left hand to open the scissors. But what I do out of habit is open the scissors "upside down" in reference to the way I open the knife blade. Similar to what is seen in this GIF, but with my right thumbnail in the nick and the handle in the left hand. (hands reverse of image)
On a side note - I tried to open the knife as seen in the GIF and since I am right handed, I dont feel safe using my left thumbnail for the pull. I switch hands once I open the knife every time.
Doesn't really bother me at all. Got used to it pretty quick. It just has a little less room on the nail nick cause the can opener is in the way more.My PX has way more spring to it. So much I actually just cut my finger when my thumb nail slipped out of the nail nick! Ouch!
What i find however, is that the back spring on the scissors has noticeably less snap than on the cellidor models.... Maube it's just tha lack of a tool in the back, and it being peen'd down in the middle rather than "floating" like on the cellidor models...
My PX has way more spring to it. So much I actually just cut my finger when my thumb nail slipped out of the nail nick! Ouch!
I have no problem with the scissors :tu:You’re the PX champion though, we are but mere mortals
Thanks :rofl: :like::cheers:
Although the cellidor models have a certain acoustical snap to them, I have always found the snap, in terms of the force, is far greater on the 93mm alox.Yep, me as well.
I find that I need to get a finger under the scissor as soon as I can on the PX/FX in order to open them.
Yep, me as well.
Same here. It's also my only SAK where I don't take extra care to keep the blades in line, and not do a backflip...
Well... all i can say is i'm very surprised by this....
Both my PX's came, new out of the box, with a noticeably less spring snap on the scissors than any of my cellidor models, especially when closing them :o
Maybe they got complaints about excessive spring snap on the scissors and decided to tone it down a little or maybe it's just mine... :dunno:
Maybe it will loosen up over time with use.
All other tools, yes.... way more spring snap that cellidor models for sure :ahhh
I'm afraid you've lost me there...
What do you mean...?
I do have waaayyy more spring snap than on a 91mm model
Heres a picture of what I mean... I hope . The un-fixed handle of the scissors rotating further apart, and coming away from the leaf spring...
I have a feeling we are talking about different things.....
I'm talking about the back spring of the tool, not the leaf spring that opens the scissors...
Im talking about both things... separately... but at the same time.
I'm saying that because the backspring of the tool is so stiff, I have to make an adjustment in how I open the tool. In order to get the scissors out in a safe and fluid motion (which is problematic because of the backspring) I need to "catch" it, or and pull the handle instead of the scissors. This results in what can potentially damage the leaf spring if I'm not careful.
This thread (and club) needs a good bump... :salute::iagree: :tu:

Got to love the PX - my first was the Damascus 2016, since added several green and blue scales versions, but this is my first mod of sorts with anodised Ti scales (can’t get enough Ti) and the main blade from a peace themed harvester because I just had to have a dove on this one!
Cheers, Vicman - I got the scales via Etsy from a maker Michael in Australia- they are excellent- search of 93mm scales on Etsy and I’m sure you’ll find him if your interested!
Just noticed the scissors have the nail nick in the same blade, but on the other side.
Interesting looking brew, Myron!
Thanks toolguy and nice pic of yours  :like: :tu:
I'm a piker compared to you but I do give it a go.LOLI am no pro :D
Mine also resides comfortably in a drawer—a designated “orange Alox” drawer, in my case. Last October’s “Old Cross Challenge” renewed my deep and abiding love for the OC Pioneer, so it gets pride of place in my pocket most days.
if i understand correctly, there are multiple orange alox pieces in there, not just this PioneerX LE.Certainly! L to R:
If so, i wouldn't mind sneaking a peak, so feel free to post the pic of the insides of that dedicated drawer.
Zoidberg and Ben, I am curious if the Pioneer XS mod is still in use? And your long term thoughts on it. I have considered it on paper but am still in the honeymoon phase with the PX. I haven’t even really carried it due to doing other challenges. A 2 layer alox with scissors is mighty tantalizing. [ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]
Yes absolutely, three plus years now and still loving it.
Unless I'm in a challenge I rarely carry anything else.
I have the same in 91mm and one of these days I'll do it to my cadet.
Couple things to think about with the PX version.
The scissor nail nick is on the other side.
While you can get used to it I prefer the 91mm side.
Easy enough to swap the scissors out.
Secondly the spring tension is much more than needed.
Removing a little from the scissor back spring or scissors pivot area makes them a lot more user friendly.
I've got these two, and the more I carry them, the more I like them. I do miss the scale tools, though. I've been wanting a plain silver PX and was thinking about dropping that hint for Father's day. But now I'm wondering if I should go Farmer X since I've already got these two PX's. Any input?(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230527/708389a817416a9c241b90cbce73f554.jpg)
I’d go for the FX MTSAK, I’m a big fan of both models but the saw doesn’t add much thickness or weight and will give you a different model to enjoy
I get around the missing scale tools by carrying a Rambler or Manager on my keychain
