Title: Farmer saves the day again!
Post by: Mike, Lord of the Spammers! on June 24, 2014, 06:49:28 PM
Now that I'm just a humble educator rather than someone who works for a living, I rarely get to use my tools in anger anymore :(

Today however a child pulled of a fence panel off at the school that I work at. Luckily I've always ignored the ban on knives in school and had my farmer in me. So I quickly aligned the panel put my farmer side on over the nail and gently tapped the opposite scale to drive the nail back in. :)

Luckily I didn't pack my swisschamp today :D

Lets salute the Farmer  :salute:

I've brought mine into work today but it's been in my bag. I've been using my Woodsman Mod.

Awesome bit of kit. Yes I could of done it with a rock, but a farmer and a bit of ingenuity can accomplish an awful lot :)

It's also so much more rewarding to have accomplished the task with the Farmer.

I like the farmer too, mostly I like the little extra thickness over the pioneer.  But.. I never use the saw, and still wish it had the metal file/saw instead.

Do you use the wood saw much?

I used to all the time in my caretaker days. Now I just use it down the woods :)

I think the woodsaw is the unsung hero of the SAK. I guess if you don't use it you won't appreciate how well it works, but it really is useful. it's one of my 'must have' tools on any SAK

Couldn't agree more :)

It works well on plaster board too in a pinch. And if you use it in combination with the awl its great for cutting small holes for cabling, piping ect :)

I'm a Farmer Fan  :D
I've had a few Alox SAK's over the years, these days I EDC a swisschamp but the Farmer is sooo pretty
although I know in my heart i'll never need a 'survival knife' I'd say the Farmer is my most likely choice of knife to pack in a 'survival kit', (I'm probably going to die early on in any survival situation, due to my age, lack of skills and pure bad luck. I know it ! but I can't help tinkering with 'kits'. ) I've been working (mainly day dreaming and thinking) about a 'fire making kit', for camping trips, with a farmer you could achieve a lot of woodworking jobs for a small loss of space, blade , saw and that awesome Awl ! so why wouldn't you ?
The 'wood saw' is one tool I'd hate to NEED yet NOT have. it adds so little to the size or weight of a SAK I wouldn't want to have one without !
I have used the saw on my Champ in 'emergencies', many times, and it's not failed anything I've asked of it (it's exactly the same as in the Farmer, but the Farmer is probably more comfy in the hand )
I also have a another 'plan'  I'm currently  in love with a Gerber 600 which I'm considering 'de-knifing', to keep Mr Policeman happy, I can really envisage a Farmer friend riding along to make up a perfect tool kit.

Nice story, this just proves that SAK is a real EDC item.

I finally succumbed to the Alox Pox, so the Farmer is the first item on my current wish list. Can someone please confirm that Farmer is NOT thicker than the 91mm Tinker? SAKWiki says they are both around 14mm thick. Tinker fits nicely in my pocket, I don't want anything bigger than that.

A 3 layer 93mm alox knife having the same thickness as the 2 layer Cellidor? Hmmm...  Only if the alox scales are actually thinner than the cellidor+outer liners...

The Farmer is indeed wider, but only by a millimeter or so which is practically nothing. Although it does weigh a bit more as well.

Also do people here find it difficult to choose between a Farmer and a Pioneer?
I for one love my Farmer yet the Pioneer seems to haunt me with it's awesome minimalistic style. That said I really like the thickness of the Farmer, it's just right.

Thanks guys. That's it, my next SAK is Farmer. Gettin' ready to jump on an Alox train...

Originally I've wanted the Pioneer, but since I am getting ready for camping this summer, the saw is on my must-have list.
