I just scored a nice Canon DSLR kit for 60 bucks without tax.
The kit contains a Canon Digital Rebel XT (8 megapixels) with an 18-55 mm f3.5 - 5.6 and a 75-300 mm f4 - 5.6 lens. Also included is a Sigma Canon dedicated 280 eo flash unit. A very nice fancy Canon branded camera bag and a few filters, including a nice circular polarizing filter rounding out the kit.
Why I am so excited you may wonder? I am starting a school camera club next September, and I am thinking this could make a nice starter kit for someone just starting into photography. If I see someone who is really into photography but cannot afford a camera, I just may gift this set to him or her.

the only thing better than that deal, is your willingness to help someone who may only be denied due to monetary shortfalls. BRAVO!

Took it out for a test run yesterday. The battery died prematurely. I thought something like this could happen. I brought it home, recharged it and tested the camera again today...with no issues. Not sure what was the issue yesterday. Going to test it out more to see if I can replicate the issue.
On the positive side, the camera does take nice photos...and the sensor appears to be clean, or at least cleaner then I figured.
2 shots taken prior to the malfunction.

Not sure if it is the camera, battery, or something else. I am thinking more on the battery as they do have a limited shelf life. I might need to get another battery. Just not sure why the battery appears to be working fine today. shrugs.
Either way, for 60 dollars, the lenses are worth more than that and they both work fine.

Good find and a Great Idea! Good on you for putting your time towards the kids. The school programs in my neighbourhood have seen a sharp decline.
