Nice, I want to do the same mod on my knifeless rebar. I've got the holder but it's the old non-spring one so will see if I can source the one with the spring in from the new surge first.

I figured getting the t-shank holder from the Surge would be too much modding; that's the one from a ST300 EOD. I got it from Loki-mobil. Had to re-profile the radius, make a notch for the lock tab pivot, and take a little bit off the height for handle clearance.
I really like the idea of doing this because I have need of a metal saw more than a wood saw when I'm at work, but still like not having to choose one over the other.

Are we allowed to use extra bits with the Rebar? Like a bit kit or other add-on implements?
I'll most likely be carrying this, or some variation of it.

So these pics are just a fun warm up right. The pic a day will be a thread started by each individual member separately correct?
Yep, we start our own threads on the 1st :tu:
Speaking of which, Obi do you prefer separate threads for each of us, or everyone posting in this thread for one, giant thread?
I sorta like one giant thread so that we see everything in one place, but that can be a headache for Z or whoever tracks it.
:salute: :salute: :salute:
7) To earn the badge you must post a minimum of one pic daily in this thread for the month of September and label the pics day 1, day 2, day 3 etc etc.

Remember that these 11 are among the most well-regarded members at MTO. Say hello to my little friend.
Aberdrew13 Rebar Challenge - Day 1:
The jigsaw blade makes quick work of cutting a piece of plastic wire mold. The stock blade from Leatherman is a little aggressive, but it gets the job done.

DAY 1 .. ReBlaster X
That right there is where my plier MTs get the most use. Pulling pins for 3-pt hitches, mower decks, etc.
Unfortunately, I seem to never remember to take a pic while I'm doing it! Good job for remembering! :D
Day 1 Rebar challenge PiTBuLLz4Me
Well I have to admit it's been a slow day multi tool wise, but I'm sure it will pick up through the month.
Pic 1 is my mt carry for September. It includes of course a Rebar in BO, a Pioneer X (scissors), Leatherman bit kit (in duct tape case lol) bit adapter and bit extender.
Pics 2 and 3 depict a problem I've known about since I purchased this defective 12 pack of Diet Coke. My wife and I played a little game of who will get stuck trying to open this can. As luck would have it, I ended up with it. So I put my Rebar and bit adapter to good use and punched the tab open.
I know it's weak but that's what I have so far today

Thanks Obi1 !! I appreciate it. Have to admit I'm liking the Rebar more than I thought I would. Usually I like the outside handle style tools. I purchased this Rebar for this contest and its growing on me. Extremely light tool for all that you get. Now I understand all the love for the Rebar. After the contest I'm going to try to put scissors in.

I pair my Rebar with my EDC Micra. So far between the 2 MTs I have every tool I with me except a hammer. Then I add a Super Tool 300 to the mixDAY 3 Rebar Challenge PiTBuLLz4Me:like:

~ The Rebar is a very compact multi tool with many super usable features. I also like that so many here have modded their Rebar's to fit their needs. I am really starting to think this just might be the best tool period.Agree 100%

I'm sure some of them have played a few scrimmages without a helmet. Seriously though you just don't see people with multi tools here. I live in a rural area and most people carry tools in their trucks. I'm always looking for someone with a multi so if they have them they're not being carried. I've seen one person with a Spyderco knife but most have a kershaws clipped to their pocket or a Buck folding hunter on the belt. They must have banged heads too many times themselves if they've never heard of the great Tim Leatherman! :multi:The Rebar definitely helped. No worries, it's all good bro. I didn't have a lot going on to do with the Rebar yesterday so I thought pairing it with the Yeti would make for a more interesting pic. Day 13 - an unusual day it has been. Picture is of three blades that saw action so far.
Serrated to cut off leather strap that became tangled on a young ladies wrist along with a bicycle chain as she tried to do something with her bike. Heard a scream and rebar did the rest.
Phillips to remove cover so I could replace comm ICs.
Small flat blade to scrape away corrosion on circuit board that got water on it.
So far...

Day 14 Rebar Challenge PiTBuLLz4Me
I was doing some shopping while on vacation and ran across this Buck 110 Folding Hunter at Walmart. It was on sale and I couldn't pass it up. This knife was all I used to carry back in the day, so it was a sentimental purchase. This was the only one they had and it was less than $20. So my Rebar is hanging out with my new Buck knife and my SOG Slim Jim today (http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160914/5b0eb527eff469057ae0d414a7639a35.jpg)

Day 14 - another busy day split between a couple of sites. The Rebar has a good variety of tools that I use often or have learned to use more frequently.
The pliers to grip a larger Allen wrench to open a cabinet with outer security locks at stop 1. At stop 2, pliers again to insert 23g wire into connectors that worked loose, knife to open static bag of repaired board, small flat blade to lever up the 2 proms from old for locating onto repaired board, pliers for relocating nylon standoffs and inserting cable plugs to small for my large fingers.
After done it wanted to pose above the bill acceptor red landing lights -

Two weeks into it and I am still happy to have the Rebar on my side  How bout everyone else :DAbsolutely agree! The 300s a little too big to pocket, still great tool (obviously, same tools as rebar) to keep around the house and in my toolbag for heavier duty. The rebar I can either pocket or holster, and it is a great size for either. The wave has oho blades and files which is great, but NO AWL!!! And the juice is just a tad on the small side to confidently tackle all jobs, plus no locking (just in case).

14/30 rebar. Cutting the biggest tags off of what should be a comfortable pillow... The scissors are sharp, almost better to just slice cut versus chop away, that make sense?

I was a bit too busy the past few days to post, so you guys can count me out of the challenge at this point. :salute:
Day 15 - another busy day three sites, two cities. Rebar handled the simple and made it easier as it was with me, other tools in truck. Last site replaced old readers with new, 5 total, about 30 minutes each pliers and 3D Phillips handled mounting. But with both hands in use not able to capture in use pictures.
Another simple task was opening package to free a replacement monitor.

The "look", I think we all get it from time to time. My wife is really easy going and let's me get by with a lot, but she said the restaurant had those cracker things and the pliers weren't necessary. Wish I had taken a pic of the pliers in action. Yes, the vacation is ending but they always go fast anyway. Had a great time though!!Day 15 Rebar Challenge PiTBuLLz4MeThat looks so good.

I've got a few problems with multitool challenges - most of them aren't UK legal (not such a big deal really), the multis are bigger than I can comfortably carry and, most worryingly, I just don't need a multitool that often. Most of my day to day needs are covered by a pocket knife and some scissors.

I was just fashionably late on this one  It should be every 30 posts for a new page and I miss it occasionally and just felt like this one needed one ;) :D
I totally agree. Some days I don't have a lot of need for a multi, but when the need arises a multi usually comes in very handyI just don't need a multitool that often.
Same here. When I carry one, it is a "just in case" kind of thing. Its the peace of mind knowing that I have things covered. But mine gets used very little. I like to have a blade, flat and phillips drivers, precise scissors (Victorinox), mini phillips (Victorinox) and pen. And those are covered with something like a Cadet plus Manager. But I do feel good having an MT on my belt just in case the need arises to save the day for someone else.

Today was a long rainy day in Central Virginia, so I didn't come across any practical use for my Rebar. Having dinner out tonight so here is a picture of my Rebar with my orange Kershaw Leek. I really like this combo. Today's a wash so to speak so here's my pic!!(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160919/81937fab56fd75506a79da6b267bd162.jpg)

Day 17 Rebar Challenge PiTBuLLz4Me
After going through all my mail from last week I found a package that arrived while I was gone. One of my Instagram followers sent me one of his custom Rebar sheaths to test and evaluate. I have to say I'm impressed with the quality of it and the ease of use. One thing I definitely like is the clip can work on a belt or a pocket. I've been using it all day and like it clipped in pocket. It also doesn't add any noticeable weight. It's made by R.A.E. Gear. I'm definitely going to buy one from him for my MUT(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160917/991d8cd7efc6d6962926efc74dd675a0.jpg)(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160917/6280f58b30c9a6670bcf5bb0d47303c4.jpg)(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160917/c34741813136d8441585f048994350c0.jpg)

I have recurrent flirtations with traditional knives, as they have a certain aesthetic appeal not found in modern designs. But then the practical side of my brain reminds me that a Victorinox Compact has 10x the utility of a Case pen knife.
Powernoodle Day 21The Vic compact knives do have more capabilities but those Case pen knives have that old school cool factor. Love the older style Case, Buck and Scrade Old Timer knives before Schrade became Chinese made.

My biggest objection is the lack of locking blades....
The Buck traditionals are Chinese too. That Case is one gorgeous little knife though. I'd be proud to carry it.
Day 21
Noticed one of the bolts that holds an outdoor light fixture to the wall was loose, so I used the Rebar to tighten it. I can't figure out how a bolt that never gets removed managed to back itself out. Maybe the heat?
but those Case pen knives have that old school cool factor.
My biggest objection is the lack of locking blades....
I guess it depends on how one uses a knife. Our fathers and grandfathers, the WWII generation and their predecessors, all managed to live their lives with slipjoints and intact fingers. If I use every blade as if it were a slipjoint, its never going to fold on my fingers irrespective of whether it has a lock. It forces me to slow down a little, have my mind present in the moment, and exercise more care. I use blades to slice - and that's it. I don't dig, twist, pry or exert forces on the spine of a folding knife. But some people do, and that's where a locking blade or fixed blade would be appropriate. I've cut myself many times over the years, but its never been for lack of a locking blade. Its usually because I've been in a hurry, and ignored the basic safety rules of cutting away from your body, etc.

but those Case pen knives have that old school cool factor.
No question about it. There are plenty of guys who have sold all of their "modern" design and carry only traditional knives. I totally get it. Its all about appreciating the history, remembering how Papaw used to do it, and slowing down and enjoying the experience. With a modern folder, I can flick it open and do the job before I even know what happened. That's good on the job site, if you have a lot of work to do or in a theoretical defensive scenario. But there is also some value in enjoying the aesthetic side of bladework, and slowing down to appreciate the polished bolsters, jigged bone covers and the cutting experience. I generally reside in the modern folder world, but occasionally retreat to traditional folders to slow down a little and reset my brain.

The Buck traditionals are Chinese too. That Case is one gorgeous little knife though. I'd be proud to carry it.Some Buck knives are but 80% are still made here in the US. The knife in the picture took me back to when everyone carried a "pocket knife". I'm not a knife expert but I thought Schrade sold out before any Buck knives were made in China. That's why I said I loved the older style of what I call a pocket knife.

Day 21 Rebar Challenge
The third day of rain again finds me with not a lot of tasks for the Rebar.
The discussion of pocket knives inspired my pic for today. This is "my" most valuable knife. It was owned by my grandfather, who raised me from a young child, a WW2 vet and life long farmer. My grandmother gave me this shortly after his death in 2002. I'm not sure if the exact age, but I know it dates at least until the late 1960s. He carried this knife everyday even though he had others he received as gifts. If any knife has put in work this knife has. He truly used it for everything and it shows. One blade is broken and the tip is gone from the main blade. It is a Colonial knife made here in the states. (http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160921/5c9da3662ddb282acafd6aebd15a91ed.jpg)

Thoughts on the Rebar at day 24:Well said Powernoodle. I'm very happy with the weight for what you get with the Rebar. Honestly, I don't even notice I'm carrying it. Yeah the inside tools are a bit of a pain, but not a deal breaker for me.
In my view, the Rebar is the smallest and lightest of the MT genre that retain enough utility to be useful on a daily basis. Moving down one class on the size scale, the Juice lineup is smaller, and it has its own appeal, but utility suffers as size and weight diminish. So for me the Rebar is as small as I'll go if I still want to have real world utility. Its a good one for those who want to carry all day, everyday as a "just in case" MT. I truly do not know its there when it rides in a vertical pocket on my 5.11 pants.
That being said, I have always preferred MTs with outside-opening blades. To me, it just makes so much more sense because it gives quick access to what is usually the most-used tool - the main blade - with the significant benefit of making the plier handles smooth in the hand. I remember former MTO member JafromMn opine that inside-opening blades were preferable as this configuration kept everything from getting dirty when the MT was closed. JafromMn was a serious, hardcore user of MTs, and his opinion carried some weight with me. But in my daily MT usage as a suave, handsome, urban professional, keeping the MT clean is not a problem. So I definitely prefer the configuration of the Swisstool Spirit, so I can access the blade quickly and not feel the file and other tools digging into my hand when I use the pliers. As much as I love the Rebar, and could make it through life just fine with nothing else, I'll still prefer the Spirit. It is also noteworthy, though, the the Spirit costs substantially more than the Rebar, and that can be a big factor for the budget-minded user.
So what I would like to see someday from Leatherman is a Rebar and ST300 with outside opening blades. Timmy Leatherman obviously knows how to do it (the Wave), and for me this would be the next logical choice in Leatherman micro-evolution.
After carrying this for a bit over a month( I started carrying mine early), I'm a believer that this might be one of the best multi tools out today. I also agree with the inside tool models keeping out dirt and dust. I was cutting grass with a Swisstool X in a sheath, when I was finished I took it out for something, and it was full of grit. I had to wash it out to get the grit out. Outside tools are nice, but they can have issues as well.
The Rebar is definitely going in my rotation once the month is over. I'll probably carry a Swisstool Spirit for a bit but I'm sure the Rebar will get carry time. I've enjoyed this challenge so far and you guys pictures!!

Day 24 Rebar Challenge PitbullDid your team have success last
Even though we had a game last night, football is non stop for our team. I was helping paint the practice field and the sprayer needed some repair. The pliers came in very handy for this. (http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160924/4b6564e67fc262c8a23c8a3363f11a29.jpg)

Yes, we won 63-21. We were 63-0 into the 3rd quarter when coach put the 2nd and 3rd string guys in. So they essentially only scored against our junior varsity team. I think this was smart so the younger guys get some experience in tough situations. Before the bye week last week we played a game and went 70-0. They didn't score on the JV guys. The other team was pretty upset and let it be known we were showboating. Where I live in Dinwiddie Va football is a huge deal. We routinely have more fans at away games than the home team. We won states in 2013 with a perfect 15-0 record. The last few years we've been rebuilding and started with a sophomore quarterback. He's now become very good and I hope we do well this season. Thanks for asking!!Day 24 Rebar Challenge PitbullDid your team have success last

Just skimming over this thread this morning I missed powernoodles post the first go around and after pitbullz quoted him I took notice :tu:
I agree that the Rebar is a great MT and one of the best in it's class IMO but outside tools are nice and if you don't have to worry about stuff crudding it up then the SPirit would be a preferred carry :tu: I usually have to worry about stuff getting into a MT at work and this one another reason that the Wave doesn't make it into my work EDC :) I love the Wave for the outside tools though and I am sure I would also love the Spirit as I love the Swisstool but never carry it for same reasons that the Wave doesn't make the cut ;) I just wish that the scissors, diamond file and clip that mine has was all factory though

Must be the angle. It's likely shiny due to lack of any hard use. Just sits in my pocket most of the time.I don't know why. But doesn't that rebar look like a mini? Looks very short in stature...Monrogue day 27:

Day 26
Today is my birthday! :D Here's the Rebar posing with my morning coffee and a ridiculous mug I may never use again.
The Victorinox Champion holding down the balloon is my precious, my precious, my... birthday present. I also got a nice bottle of Scotch, but it's a bit early for that in this time zone.
Plier tools baby's! Gotta have them available and ready. :tu:Definitely. Probably my most used daily tool!
Wow 2 more days left!! This month really went fast. I enjoyed the challenge and looking at everyone's pictures. I have to say I'm more impressed with the Rebar than I thought I would be. Truth be told I purchased the Rebar just to participate in the challenge but carried it a few weeks prior to the start date.
I really never thought of buying a Rebar because of the whole inside tools deal. I saw others on the forum, and Internet, giving it much praise. I wasn't a believer until now. If I could only pick one MT, it just might be the Rebar. I'll probably carry it a bit longer out of habit, but won't have to worry about forgetting a daily pic. Thanks to the challenge for opening my eyes to the Rebar and all its utility. Probably a little early, but I enjoyed it guys!!

This is exactly why we encourage people to give these challenges a go.
Given the choice some would give up on an unknown tool pretty quickly.
By staying with it for a longer period of time and getting some real world use out of it you tend to bond with the tool and get a better feel for it's capabilities.

I wondered, would my Vagabond or Pioneer qualify, I think those are 2-layers.?

That's mainly because the traditional, slip joint challenge overlapped with this one. Blame JD for the scheduling. From September 1st to September 15th many of us had to carry both, and use a traditional slip joint as our primary cutting tool and the Rebar for everything else.

I carried the Rebar since it came out until the first of this year when I started mixing it up a bit with some other MTs and it was stock for that whole time and it never failed me then :tu: I love that I have modded it and made it more my own but it is very capable out of the box as a few of you have already said :tu:

It's almost a strange feeling not knowing what I'm carrying now. One thing I enjoy about the challenges is not having to worry about choosing which MT to carry. This challenge for me solidified that I will carry the rebar the majority of the time. But I know what you mean. And The ability to have the freedom to choose is welcomed ;)

Yeah, I have a few others that will be nice to carry again. The Rebar is one of the top few, but probably won't be carried for a bit as others need my attention ;) I agree that the pic posting daily is a challenge, especially if you don't use the tool much (like me). It's almost a strange feeling not knowing what I'm carrying now. The hard part for me was more in line with remembering to take and post a pic everyday. This proved to be challenging in that regard. Probably why there were less than a dozen people in this challenge. Great job everyone! Hats off :hatsoff:
Haha yeah. I do have some other tools looking at me kinda funny, like 👋 hey remember me?! It also proved tough to remember to take a picture when in the moment or while actually working your job. So most the time it was a glam shot or tinkering at home after work days for me. Needless to say great little tool.Yeah, I have a few others that will be nice to carry again. Still carrying it out of habit but I started about 2 weeks before the challenge began. Now that the challenge is over I might put a pair of scissors in sooner or later

Now that the challenge is over I might put a pair of scissors in sooner or laterI will carry my Rebar going forward for most of my work day purposes. I liked using my ST300 during the July challenge, that really proved to me a MT was a viable solution for me. It was heavy, and my suspenders were requiring frequent adjustments.
I carried the surge a lot prior to getting the rebar. I've enjoyed the lighter rebar to the point I don't think I'll carry the surge as much in the future. The challenge did make me rethink my edc and its weight.Still carrying it out of habit but I started about 2 weeks before the challenge began. I'm still carrying mine as well, along with the vic pioneer. I'll go back to my surge during the day for work though.
I'm with you on that. I carried a Pioneer X during the first 10 days of the challenge but left it at home during vacation. I kept the Rebar sharp to the point it handled all my cutting tasks. I just figured scissors would make the Rebar more complete.Still carrying it out of habit but I started about 2 weeks before the challenge began. Then the Rebar was selected and it did not miss a beat.
If memory serves me correctly, the one tool I did not use during the challenge was the opener.
Guess what, day 31 - Rebar opener was implemented to remove caps from 2 ice cold IBC Root Beers at a local apple festival my wife and I took in today. Sorry, tool with me but not my phone, so no action shot. (http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161001/ad0121bf6b8115aae3a5405f0e855919.jpg)
For me SCISSORS are not a want on my Rebar, as I also carry a Micra.
The only tool I would change in the future is the file.
For me the Rebar is that tool that is presently 'just right', yet I will keep and eye out for that better tool in my future.

But first. A couple thoughts. So, the good ol'Rebar :D This has to be among my favorite Leatherman multitools. The tool load out is really great for me, and the size and form factor is so easy to carry everywhere whether it's in a pocket, pack or tossed in my van (down by the river).Speaking to the con of the awl not being sharp enough, I'm not sure about that. Here is a pic of the awl puncturing an aluminum beer can with ease. We were goofing around after vacation and a friend wanted to shotgun a beer. The awl barely touched the aluminum before it punctured it. This pic didn't make the cut for my daily pic, but here it is a bonus pic from Day 17 lol (http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161001/5e664e9f41066514b919e7211cc4dcec.jpg)
Here's a couple thoughts I have. Feel free to comment with yours:
Pros.
-awl, every multitool in my opinion/use needs an awl
-blade shapes, I like both SE and PE
-file, the cross hatched side is good (not great)
-drivers, the flats and philips are all great, good selection. Seems to cover everything I come across
-replaceable hard wire cutters
-wire stripper
-sheath availability/variety
-ease of modification and compatibility
-overall shape and size
-weight
Cons.
-awl, needs a sharper point imo
-overall precision of hard wire cutters
-file, the single hatched side dosent seem to be good for much
-can opener/cap lifter
Overall satisfaction with the Leatherman Rebar is a solid 8/10 & :tu: :tu:
Overall thoughts. I'm going to continue to keep the rebar as my number one go to edc plier based multitool.

I think I meant angel, not point. Ala the Alox awl or violently sharp and pointy SOG awl. Where as if you make a hole with the leatherman awl you'll be left with a mangled big ol hole. Of course this is subject to my opinion.
