Title: Name This SAK
Post by: ICanFixThat on January 14, 2012, 09:26:53 PM
(http://www.sakwiki.com/show_image.php?id=2155)

Back in November Ibach put together the New Alox configuration (http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Victorinox+Long+Rancher) above.  You might think of it as a Pioneer Rancher with a Marlinspike/Sacking-Needle instead of the Reamer, or you might think of it as a First-Mate without the saw; or maybe some other way.

This knife needs a good name.  Maybe we can use this thread to create a shortlist and then have a poll, or just figure it all out here.

Since most of the Marlinpike models are named for the Marine industry, it might be cool to think of this one as having a Sacking-Needle and naming it for the agricultural farming industry... the fact that it is Aqua in color is just more SAK naming irony, but only makes sense because all the Marine models were red.  Anyway just some thoughts.

Let it rip, maybe I can come up with a prize for the person that comes up with a good name, on top of the fact that the name will be crowned as official on SAKwiki.  I reserve the right to be final arbitarator if required; don't worry I won't be around forever to defend the name.  :D

First name that popped into my head was Brian. It'd be nice to see some tools get real names  :D

Other than that pruner blade with "seed planter/threading needle" knife and beer opener makes me think about someone growing their own veg.

How about Propagator

That pruner blade might be good for ropes too though

Docker or almost sneaking a real name in Stevedore  :D :D

The pioneer with the marlin spike instead of the awl, was just called the sea pioneer.  So to have the pruner blade on instead of the can opener, I'd probably just refer to it as a sea rancher.  Maybe a sea rancher raises sea cattle?   :D

Sorry I'll just say right now that this is not going to work, because it would have to look just like some other famous SAK in order to be worthy of the name Brian.  Since this is not the case we're going to have to just move on.  You get 4/5 for clever though; maybe we can have a prize for that as well.

If Brian didn't prove popular enough I was going to suggest Dave .... but somehow I don't think I'm going to get much milage out of that one either

How come no one complained that the color was quite off on the image?

I think this one is more accurate, but I'll go view it on a few more computers.

Most of the *real* Victorinox names for the marlinspike knives are positions in a ship's company - Seaman, Sailor, Midshipman, First Mate. IMO, this should follow the pattern. My suggestion would be Bosun (Boatswain). This was the person on the ship in charge of all the rigging - IOW, one of the ones who'd use the marlinespike the most.

Since its green, how about Marine, which can have several naval connotations.

A 'sea-cow' is the Afrikaans name for a hippopotamus, so I think hippo-farmer sounds good.  But what i'd really like to call this on is MINE. It's a pity that marlinspike alox is so rare that no-one dare buy one as a user.

So far I've put these on the short-list; keep the ideals coming.

Boatswain (Bosun)  (unlicenced member, but master of the Marlinspike, with varying duties a SAK is appropriate so...)
FarmHand           (got a couple nods)
Marine             (maybe two generic, an to widely associated with the more tactical image these days)
Marine Cutter      (I added this to kind of narrow the definition of Marine)
Prairie Rancher    (I like this one if we stay away from Marine)
Sea Rancher        (not crazy about it, but it got a couple nods)

Marlin Rancher.  :pok:

?eter, I bought a First Mate NB, luckily for a more or less reasonable price and I USE it. :D I actually do not generally carry it but the blades have been honed to an extremely sharp convex on a leather strop. I use it mainly in adjusting knots. Many of these models are expensive enough though to discourage use. Of course they are still a pleasure to use, but discourage it because of the risk of loss and diminution of value. If I can get a less expensive silver alox or whatever version and keep the colorful version pristine, I would, but since I cannot get a duplicate in function as a user, want to use what I have. My First Mate is actually a silver alox one, regular Vic shield, without keyring.

No Broken!  ... the list is supposed to be alphabetical  :twak:.

Just a little to late here, maybe Vic whould have used this on originally; the rank is retired so I think maybe not the best for this new SAK, and it sort of conflicts with the other ranks that are already covered I think.

ps... thanks to the Mod that fixed the image in the OP.

Other nautical names:

Quartermaster - In the US Navy, the quartermaster is a position responsible for the ship's navigation and maintenance of nautical charts and maps. Aboard merchant ships, the term quartermaster usually refers to the Able Seamen assigned to bridge watches.

Seafarervariant of Seaman that is gender neutral

I still like the idea of a Prairie Rancher, etc! An agricultural theme seems to fit this knife. A "sacking needle" (aka marlinspike) is a common use item in an agricultural setting.

I will go and hide now... thank you

Actually I agree with you, did you see 'Prairie Rancher' made the short list.  There is a strong case for 'Boatswain' as well though; besides those already stated, I think we need a SAK with a more sophisticated name like this, but maybe this model is not the Mr. Sophisticate I'm lookin' for.

Both Boatswain and Prairie Rancher sound like names a SAK should have. One I could think of is Homesteader, a bit of pioneering farming/ranching that is very much a DIY affair.

I still like Boatswain, as I like consistency with the whole Nautical theme of the Marlinspike knives. Quartermaster is another good nautical name, FWIW.
