Seems awful fishy, especially asking for a credit card and your mother's maiden name. Classic pieces of information to allow a phisher access to your stuff.

Is there any indication from the links in the message where this "form" information would go?

Edit to add: The more I look at it, the worse it smells. Grammar errors in a form email? Asking for your password in a form? All the info from your credit card that someone would need to use your card to make a purchase? Stinks to high heaven...

Paypal does contact by email. But they do not ask to download a file and ask for you to send it back. Nor will they ask you to send it to them via email. This is phishing. Someone is trying to gain access to your account. My suggestion is use another computer and log on to Paypal. Change your password and email address on your account. Monitor it and see if you get these weird emails again. If you don't your good to go. If you do call the bank and Paypal and freeze them both.

If in doubt phone them mate, BUT be sure you're talking to someone who has at least half a clue as to what they're doing.

I had major issues with them lately, a card that has been used several times on my account got blocked. I phoned the bank first to make sure there were no problems, and they said all was well and they had received no requests foir funds from PP.

Then I phoned PP who said that it was indeed the back who had refused payment. I phoned the bank back again and talked to the department that PP told me to ask for. The bank said all is well, full green light, funds are there and no other reason why anything should be held back.

Phoned PP again, and got told it was "internal security module" which had blocked the transaction .... but it wasn't my account that was the problem. They were coy with info, but I posed a few carefully worded questions at them which led to me effectively being told that my account was good to go, but the recipient of the payment was getting blocked from receiving funds from me. I alerted the guy (one of our own members here) of the problem. They of course got very concerned about this.

THEN I tried to send a payment to a different member here, and got blocked in exactly the same way. Tantrum time!! I got hold of PP for a third time and told them the call was not going to end until both transactions had been completed. They were at a loss for what to do and finally showed some honesty by saying they had no idea what the problem might be, and it was MY suggestion of removing all cards from my account and reinstalling them which got it back going again. I then got hold of both guys I'd been trying to send money to and brought them up to speed.

Much agro, little truth, ample embarrasment for me with my forum buddies for not being able to pay them (when in fact there was nothing wrong) and also for embarrassing and worrying someone that their account was being locked down due to security concerns when that was not the issue at all. The cost of making all these phone calls obviously wasn't a huge amount - but I shouldn't have had to bear ANY cost, or spending half a day trying to fix it, or worrying other people. Bad show Paypal!! I got a questionnairre about their help service after it was all fixed, they didn't score very highly and I got the change to make my views (very clearly) known.

It's REALLY getting to the point where we need viable alternatives to PP. Too many people are having too many problems too often.

Thanks again to the two members here who showed great patience and understanding whilst I wrestled with it all

Since paypal has your full name,

ANY email from paypal (or a bank or any other place where you have an actual account) that addresses you generically but discusses your specific account is SPAM until proven otherwise.

What Whippy said, ebay and paypal email always address you by your name, if it's not there it's fake.
