My Center Drive sees a fair amount of use by me and my family but not alot of belt time. Recently, I've been packing it along more and more. As some might recall, Music Man was one of it's biggest fans prior to his passing. Would anyone here be interested in doing a Center Drive Challenge in honor and in memory of him? I'm thinking March timeframe. There seems to be be a few new owners of this M/T and it would give them a chance to put it through it's paces. Let me know.

I don't have one, but I am happy and glad that you had the idea of honoring Music Man in that way :salute:
Have a great year Barry, and shall MM remain in our memories for the time to come

Yep I'll join in on that one :tu:

You too my friend!

I could split this thread off from the point you first mentioned it if you would like the name to reflect it's a memorial challenge for MM
-
That sounds great my friend! It might get more attention that way.
-
I don't have a CenterDrive yet. But as a memorial to MM I will before this begins. So count me in.
-
Oh I found out from the 30 day challenges thread, so Kev keep up the good work and thanks for it.

I guess I am too new to have known MM?
And I also have no earthly idea at all what a Challenge is?
Though I do see them mentioned here often.
But I have carried my CD every single day since getting it so..........School me please.
-
Count me in as well. MM was a great guy and a sorely missed member of our family here at MT.o. Will be buying another Center-Drive specifically to join this challenge.
1. Barry Rowland
2. Kev D
3. Douglas
4. Gerleatherberman
Will have to start a couple of days late, as the ToughTool challenge is during February and won't end until March 2nd.

Challenges are fun. Carry a tool everyday and take photos everyday to post them. Pics with the tool in use are preferred, but beauty shots are always welcome. Give thought, opinions, and mention problems along the way. All of this for 30 days without missing a day with posting a photograph of the tool :tu:
-
Sounds a little Dangerous ,full of Mystery,Romance and Intrigue!
How can I not be down with all that?
Of course the idea of taking pics of myself working might make me look like a bigger tool than the Centerdrive but.........For MM why not!
It looks like he and I also do the same kind of work at least partly!

March is finally here!! We started the month and the Challenge off with a little snow. The CD I'll be using is a couple of years old and very well used. I've found that, with a bit kit, this tool is literally a tool box on your belt. Musicmen used his for his business. I've used mine around the farm and doing all kinds of handyman things. I've not ever babied it. In fact, my son Noah, who also has one, was always amazed at how much I've put mine to work. So let's see what we can do with ours! Musicmen, this one is for you buddy!
-
Seems only fitting to post me fixing an Audio cable this morning then.
In fact I am going to try to only post Electronics based use in Homage to MM since we do similar work.
It is also tricky to get working pics without an extra hand but we each have our Cross to Bare I suppose!
Oh and ALWAYS carry a rubber band too as a force multiplier! :twak:

Day 1
So journey begins with CD and i used it pretty much today. Knife is big enough to survive tasks where i normally use regular knife also bitdrive is super to use but there is also pliers what i love to use cause you can get pliers out just swinging wrist bit

-
Way to go! The main blade does a great job cutting pretty much anything you want to cut.
-
I like every other tool except serrated blade, i havent found any use of it cause its feels too damn small and akward to use compared to main blade, just need to find scissors that will fit there

Day 1
Doing some work at my old mill removing the main feeder cable to the water treatment plant so it can be diverted out of the mill to allow the demolition to be completed

Nice work Kev :like: :tu:
-
I agree with you on that Anti. That serrated blade is the weak link in the package for me too.
-
Kev, they're not shutting your mill down for good are they? I saw way too much of that here over the years
-
They mothballed it in December 2015, so I moved departments March 2016, and they decided to demolish it last May. Demolition is nearly complete now. Once to get the last few supplies bypassed around the mill instead of through its tunnels, they will finish it. It's netted £7.5 million in scrap , or will have by the end of the demolition.
-
Look'n good folks and like G-man I'll be joining on the 3rd as well. We finnish the Tough Tool Challenge tomorrow then it'sm straight here with the CD.
:woohoo: :woohoo:
-
YEEEEEHAWWW! :woohoo:
Douglas,
We're going to be so confused. SwissChamp for 30, ToughTool for 30, then CD for 30! :ahhh
-
:iagree: :ahhh  :dunno: :multi:
-
Day 2: All kinds of fun! Using an idea from the Swisschamp Challenge, I used the awl to peel an orange. We got a load of wood pellets in yesterday before the snow hits, and put the main blade to work cutting a bag open. I then used the pliers for tea bag retrieval.
-
Great uses BR :like: :tu:
-
Well its Mardi Gras Weekend party time and everything is going out on Rentals as usual so I need to get the cables all going that I can and make new ones as needed.
I think I could do a 30 day cable challenge pretty easily actually?
So again MM this one is for you,you might be the only other guy here who knows what this one is?!

I have read that others have not been happy with the fit and finish of theirs but mine has been just fine.
I use mine every day and the utility that I get is the feature that I like the most.
They are sure no Swisstool but then the Swisstool has no Centerdrive and the driver is just in a class of its own for my uses!
I also Love the pliers and have been a little surprised based on what I have read that I didn't destroy any part of them yet but I Use them but try not to Abuse them at the same time as they do me no good unless they work.
So yes I am satisfied with the Quality all day long!
To be fair I have also never really used anything there except the Pliers and Driver so YMMV too.
I could stand the thing being somewhat more streamlined for sure but its not a big enough deal to me to leave it at home ever!
-
Thanks ezdog glad you are happy with the quality  :like:
I like the look of the CD I am just not sure
if the replacement cutters are up to the job
From what I have read so far on the forum
-
I've had no issues with mine whatsoever. I've used mine for almost everything, and it's come through every time. A lot of the guys have had issues with the wire cutters, but mine haven't let me down. Fit and finish wise, it's no Swisstool, but I think it's better than the MP600's I've come across.
-
I will say, this tool is no lightweight, and the new leather sheath should be an improvement and aid in packing it daily. I missed the rush to purchase the new sheath, so I'm stuck with the canvas model for the time being.
-

Here is how I EDC mine.
I have 2 identical Skinth' and the left side one is the Spirit X based one while the right side one is the CD.
Pretty compact really and I only notice now when I do not have one of them on me!
Each has 2 lights and various bit kits while the Spirit one will also carry an ALOX Cadet and Leatherman Bit Extension in the front pockets.
The CD one is too tight for anything in the front pockets but also does not often need an extension as the Driver is already good and long!
I mainly use the Cadet for Philips screws too oddly enough but just the really tiny ones that the tiny straight blade drives amazingly well somehow?

I have looked at the CD since they came out :salute: The combo blade is almost a deal breaker for me though :-\ I haen't really pulled the trigger on a Signal or a MUT for very similar reasoning :ahhh Why these companies don't give a fully PE or fully SE option for MTs is beyond me  I know the combo blade is great for some and that they are prone to stay sharper longer when being used for a variety of task but I just never get on with them :-\
Great pics so far all and great uses :tu: This will be a fine challenge for sure :like:

Yeah like I said,I read about it but would might think that Gerber would post it on there site too?
Funny thing for me is that I really can't remember the last time I needed scissors on a MT at all?
I know most here are crazy for them but they are pretty much irrelevant to me?
What am I missing?

Day 3. Nice job everyone! Wim, I've been pleased with the tool kit so far. I have to say that I prefer the file and serrated blade on the Super Tool and Rebar. Beyond that, I have no complaints.
-
Thanks BR what do think of the cutters on
the pliers as that is a important tool for me  :like:
-
For my usage, cutting zip ties and wire, I haven't had the issues that the other guys have had. I'm not cutting 8 penny nails with mine, but I haven't even rotated the cutters yet.

That’s good to hear BR :like:
I mainly use the cutters for zip ties and electronics wires
and sometimes Tig welding stainless steel 1.2 mm wire
I don’t know if they would be able to cut stainless wire without problems :dunno:
-
The Center-Drive has been part of my daily cary for several days now, as some have seen in my pocket dump for the Tough Tool Challenge. I purchased mine already experianced so I don't have a pouch and have been pocketing it. I really is a bit large for that but it works. Just be aware the driver likes to try and snag smaller loose change.
Now to the first CD project,

Off to a good start, guys! :like:
Day 1:
Took the CD to work with me, but since today was one of the rare times I do cash register/computer work, I didn't get a chance to use the CD. Surprisingly, with my medium fit jeans, the CD rides well in my back pocket as long as the driver side is facing away from my rear.
Pocket dump. Minus the watch that I forgot to throw in.

Day 3
My CD was today mostly on belt, few times needed pliers. Also used file once to remove burr on kids toys (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190304/39bd1c41ef6f6753ccdab06a21ac7f21.jpg)

Question:
Has anyone else experienced serious magnetism with your CDs?
I was checking the cutters to see if they were affected by the slight misalignment in the jaws. Good news is the cutters are working fine. But, I noticed anything steel I was cutting was sticking to the jaws. I insert the pliers tips in the Tupperware container of clippings and was shocked to see it picked almost every piece of steel up in there. A quick treatment with a tape eraser removed the magnetism, but has anyone else noticed any magnetism?
I'm glad I caught it before a work day around steel wool. The CD would have looked like Chewbacca after a few hours.

Glamour shot today as I was too busy for an action shot. I found out where the hot spot is on the handles when squeezing the pliers hard today as I now have a sore red spot in my palm. I tried to get a pic but it doesn't show well on camera. Hurt like a bugger when I did it.

Great pics! The next day or two is going to be a little chaotic as I transition to the 11-7 shift, but my trusty Center Drive and I will find work :D
I have to say, I like that all black CD!
-
Good work, guys! :like:
One thing that I already like on the CD is the main blade. The lock tab makes a great thumb ramp.
-
I'm not impressed with the pliers, they just don't grip very well when using the ends. I tried to grip and twist off a piece of plastic yesterday but it just slipped out no matter how hard I tried to squeeze.
I'm going to scuff the BO coating today to see if that helps.

Open the second bit storage in the tool-opposed handle to grip thin material. It serves to keep the handles from closing on your palm, but I've also noticed it causes gripping issues with thin material. The pliers themselves are good, with a nice tooth set. :)

I second that. The factory edge didn't last long but after I sharpened it myself it's been great.
-
Indeed, newer Gerber edges are super sharp, because of the thin almost-burrs being lined up well enough to cut. But, with that being the case, a proper sharpening usually takes good care of it. I like that Gerber switched from their 7cr blade steel to 420HC. I'm a big fan of 420HC, well at least when it is heat treated properly. :)
Oh, did opening the bit storage thing help with the gripping for you?
-
Yes it did, thank you

Also, I have noticed the newer black CDs have different handle rivets than the older two-tone CDs. The BO versions also have beefier drive-arms(older ones have deeper cut-outs) and the serial code printed on the blade(where as the older ones had it printed on the frame underneath the drive arm).
-

It's sure sharp Steve. Ask Noah . Gerber calls it an awl, but that doesn't seem to fit.
Wow ! That's a pretty sorry looking awl :o
-
Not sure what is up with Antti's photo(that Steve commented on the awl). The awl doesn't appear that short IRL.
Like Barry says, it is wicked sharp. It works well as a reamer and works fair as an awl.
It works well for drilling wood as well.

Good stuff everyone.
Day 3
These switches are often a pain to remove. The switch came out easily with the prybar, I was very pleased with it.
Then I used the aforementioned AWL to mark the drill points for the new retrofit switch guard. The awl is VERY sharp and as G-Man said no where near as short as it looks in Anti's pick. It is short by Victorinox standards though. Due to the pliar shape I would not try using it as a center punch like I have my Swisstool and Spirit.
-
Very good uses, Douglas! :like:
The CD awl seems more like a reamer(with the fat taper), which I do like. As an awl, like you said, it isn't going to work like a SwissTool or Surge awl, but those don't work well as reamers.

Looks like this is going great. Nice uses and pics all around!

The awl is good enough to give a start for a screw , it's also a good shape for a plastic tube de-burrer, staple lifter, and is rather good for scraping muck out from under your nails.

I discovered some loose Pocket Screws in a shelf that I have in a vehicle and had to leap into action with the CD of course!
The funny thing is that it is too easy to tear these screws out with power tools especially if they are already loose and you have no real feel for how they are biting into the wood either.
So regular drivers are tough to get in the pocket and also turn by hand but the CD body offset is really ideal on both of these points!
Who woulda thought?

Day 7: In the process of fixing some toast with homemade bread, I couldn't get to our breadknife. Out came the main blade of the Center Drive. I was amazed at how well it cut slices, especially since we just baked the bread last night! The only thing that kept the cuts from being absolutely perfect was the blade being just a little short. I'm going to try the serrated blade and see how it does. You can see that it was Sheepdog approved down near the bottom of the picture :D

Unfortunately my CD didn't do so well.
Day 5
The driver is ok but I don't like having to open the pliars to get to the spare bit, then close them to use the driver because the pliars are spring loaded.
Then the wire cutters proved to be even smaller than the Spirit's and are unable to cut all the way through 12AWG high temp in a single cut.
CD
(https://i.imgur.com/lFixeDhh.jpg)
Spirit
(https://i.imgur.com/NFDyaxGh.jpg)
The pliar head lenght is great but the additional width to reinforce the changable cutters is adverse to working in tight spaces.
Lastly there is no wire stripper feature. The blade works but it may hold it's edge just a little to well.
This picture was taken hours later because for an hour after every time I took preasure off the cut I started to blead everywhere.
These little cuts are the worst.
-
I agree about those bad cuts! I hope you heal up soon buddy! I never realized there's no wire stripper with this tool. That seems like a big thing to overlook for a handyman tool! I wish the cutters on the CD were the same as on the Super Tool. Those guys are unstoppable! I've cut battery cables with my Rebar at work. This is great feedback that I hope Gerber is paying attention to.
-
Good work, Douglas. :like:
Tip: The little SE blade is easier & safer to strip wire with. You can also leave the SE blade open while using the pliers, since the blade faces into the handles. :)
-
Thanks Gman! I don't strip wire often anymore but now I know how to get it done.
The Velcro on my sheath finally died. I've got a backup that I switched over to, but I'm thinking about putting a snap on my regular sheath. The fabric is in great shape. The Velcro is just shot.

Indeed. Seems SOG and Gerber are using the same company to produce sheaths for the CD and PAD/PowerPlay. The sheaths are rock solid, but velcro is terrible. :ahhh

Yanking it!
Someone gave me this one and the little "Tit" that holds the clip in place is broken off. :dunno:
Nothing more useless than a spinning clip.
I don't need this tool at all but I need the clip to spin even less!
And of course having the CD Dominate it is just Icing on the Cake! :hatsoff:

Thank you for the submission, Douglas!
Shame that the replaceable cutters are positioned so that they cannot cut all of the way through the thick wire you had and soft plastic. The older non-replaceable cutters on the Gerber MP600 were just absurdly strong and well aligned. If Gerber could get us an old-school MP600 pliers head in the CD, it would be awesome. :)

I was thinking just that! Any modders want to give it a try and let us know? :pok:

Day 11:Mrs Rowland and I installed an indoor clothes line today. The only thing I had to resort to another tool for was the tiny Philips head screwdriver that is used to retain the spool. For that, I used the multitool on my Rambler that Folder Beholder gifted me last summer :D

I had the same experience with mine. Now it's as sharp as anything else this side of an Opinel!
I used mine to clear a feed issue on my 73 year old Remington 512 .22. The ability to change out bit heads for different sizes on the spot is part of my love for it. That, and it feels like the steel mill of multis!

Sorry to just vanish in the middle of this but I had to go dark a few weeks ago when I got a job out of town with little notice.
I thought that I could keep up the Challenge at first but was OBE from the start when I got rear ended in the rental van by some idiot tailgating me in rush hour traffic in Denver at 7:30 in the morning!
I was separated from my tools in the van by the bashed in rear door and was not sure that if I opened the door that I could get it to close again, and this began my Epic bad journey the day before the Blizzard!
I actually did use the CD to remove the light cluster housings and plastics from the van as they were banging against the side as I continued driving but getting pics was the last thing on my mind too.
Anyway,2 weeks and 5k miles and 2 vans later I am back home and pretty happy about it too!
I try not to advertise when I am gone. :salute:

So I got up there with the wrecked van full of furniture and tools but then could not get up the long frozen driveway at all.

Yet another Hobby of mine,I am sort of Maniacal about it too!
This one will run on house power or 12 volt dc and I use it to test speakers in installs too.
I have several of these that I come up with from parts that I would otherwise just throw away usually and I get to make the box as a bonus!
Maybe I will start a thread in the Break Room for this kind of thing?

You get a promotion Kev?
-
No, just a triple office shuffle because our new section manager wants the biggest office in the building for himself. I've moved into my bosses office who just retired, the last engineer in the office the new section wants has moved into my old office, and the new section manager gets the big office.
It's funny how there is suddenly money to completely renovate it and new windows for him but there wasn't for the 5 people who once shared it.
-
In my part of the world, Spring brings a ton of great things, but also the dreaded Deer Tick. For two consecutive days, my guys owe the mighty CD for pulling a tick from their thick fur coats.

I've moved across the hall and 2 offices over. It's much bigger than my old one and I have my own meeting table big enough for 7 people in it as well so I won't have to compete for use of the conference room any more

Last job in my office move, changing the lock barrel to the one off my old office door. I have 5 keys for mine and my boss said he only had one for his so swapped the barrels over and told the engineer moving into my old office about it so think he will do the same.

Thanks Wim! I've really liked this Challenge. While the CD isn't perfect, it sure comes close for my needs. I wish the cutters were a shade bigger and the serrated blade a bit more aggressive, but I've made it work. My favorite thing about the CD is how it fits my hand. For me, the tool set is as close to ideal to me as I've found. While I like the handiness of a smaller tool, I love the utility of the big guys. Being from the epicenter of the US steel industry, this thing reminds me of something big and strong, like Kev's steel mill. I've used it for about everything I can find, and haven't babied it in the least. In spite of that, it still comes thru. I'm itching to take it on a hike!

Congrats and thanks to all who took part in the challenge. This is the first time I've carried the CD for more than 1 day. It's been a good and capable tool, but I'd still take a Surge before it 99.9% of the time. I prefer the ergonomics and tool layout of the Surge over the CD.
Time to give the CD a wipe over with ballistol and swap to a Surge ready for the April challenge.
I'll assign the 30 day badges to us all once everyone has finished the challenge :tu:

I sure have not changed my impression or preference for the CD over the course of this deal but it is also clear from the challenge to create pictures that I for one can only take a picture of me doing anything with one hand!
I need the other hand for the camera/phone.
So I realize that my pics of this tool in action are greatly skewed by this limitation where I am not using another device to support the pic taking.
I really like the pliers on the CD as well as any other MT pliers that I have and for both the spring loading and the shape of the jaws. I tend to not use a MT as a blunt instrument but rather as a finer tool and if a blunt instrument is called for then I get one to do the job.
Likewise I do not use a MT for wiring really which is how I make a living but instead I make sure that I have the right tool for the job at hand.
The tools offered in the Vic tools are slick for sure and I wish that the CD had more of the same tools as the Vics and of course that they were as nicely finished too but it seems that the majority of my MT use is really as a Driver and there is no match in the MT universe that I have tried to the CD for that use.
I might try to find a decent way to carry my Spirit again but along with the Wera Telescopic Screwdriver too!
That would be about ideal if I can carry them both.

Well here's Day 30.
I have to say this has probably been the toughest challenge I've done so far. Other than flipping out the pliars as a fidgett toy I never realy got the appeal of the Center Drive. It's even larger than the Surge, has fewer features, a smaller grip with the pliars and I definately found out I DO NOT like spring loaded pliars. Please don't get me wrong it did everthing I asked it to and did it well enough. It is just to big and all that size only to gain a 1/4 driver, while sacrificing scissors, chisel, wire stripper dedicated can opener, wood saw, hack saw that are all contained in a smaller package on the Spirit or equaly sized Swisstool with an added 9inch/23cm ruler and ALL outside opening tools. When compaired to the Wave/ Surge you lose dedicated can opener, hacksaw, wood saw/ saw blade exchanger wider pliar jaws larger wire cutter, wire stripper, 4 outside opening tool two of wich are OHO. It's great to see the CD did so well for every one else in the challenge and it never let me down. It just isn't for me. Now I have to decide if it would memorialize MusicMen better staying with me or moving on to some one who although they may have never encountered or known MM would still appreciate the CD's unique design and use it regularly.
-
Thanks for the badge Kev. :salute:

Thanks for the kind words, everyone! And thanks for the badge!
And good end to the challenge.
A few short thoughts on the CD from my perspective:
I feel the CD is a good tool overall. I like the ruggedness, tool selection(for certain purposes), and OHO driver/knife/pliers. The bit holder has excellent reach without using any extra doo-dads to extend it(like the Surge, Wave, SwissTools, and most other Gerbers). The knife blade is a good shape/length and has decent edge retention(in the 420 class anyway). The pliers are quite good. Not a big fan of the carbide cutters, but non-abuse work use could not break them. Jaws seemed slightly misaligned, but that never caused an issue and apparently isn't a common issue with the CD. Gerber file is O.K, which I do like consistent files on tools(hate getting used to one style file and having to learn another - gerber files, since the mid 1990s have been almost identical). Awl worked very well and functioned as a reamer(which the swisstool and surge awls don't do well). The nail puller....meh...makes a cool bottle opener, but I hesitated to remove nails from hard woods, because the fulcrum is at the plastic lock tab. The SE blade is meh as well. Works as advertised, but could be sharper for sure.
The fit and finish are good for a tool made to be beaten on. The price is reasonable considering it is fully US made and has thoughtful engineering.
I agree with Douglas on the size being too big, but honestly, most guys who like that sort of tool aren't worried about the thickness. It just means you'll be less likely to have it slide out of your hand than a slippery tool.
All in all, it covered 95% of my needs at work. And I can't really ask for more, because of the OHO-locking driver/blade/pliers(which eat up tool realty). It is the only tool to offer true(not worn in or manipulated) OHO 1/4" driver/blade/pliers. Anyone knows of another tool with that, please correct me.
