Is it just me or does anyone else find the Explorer to have the perfect balance of tools and just the right amount of layers for EDC? I think it's the perfect SAK.
Thanks and Cheers Tosh :cheers:Is it just me or does anyone else find the Explorer to have the perfect balance of tools and just the right amount of layers for EDC? I think it's the perfect SAK.
HELL Yes sawman
That's why I've got34 of them. I made one into a "plus" with white scales..
You're obviously a man of taste - no less.
i prefer the yeoman but for saks you can go into the store and buy it's a good oneWhile I can see why you would prefer the yoeman, I personally like the seperate driver and canopener implements over the compact tool. For my uses, the screwdriver is a better fit and I find the individual canopener quite faster as well.
^ I just find the small blade to be a waste of a spot.
now put a ............ or electricians blade... (That would be a very good idea, I have to say)

Funnily enough that's exactly the reason why I DO like the Explorer. Here in the UK, it's very unwise to pull out a knife, whether it be non-locking or whatever. But the small blade on the Vic's seems to be perfectly acceptable and totally unthreatening
I'm fond of the Explorer myself. For my needs, my Yeoman is a more economical choice, but I understand the benefit of the full sized Explorer. The next two mods I'm planning on doing are both going to be based on Explorers in fact. One with a saw, to make a Woodsman, and another with pliers.

Explorers are awesome, but I really do miss the old style mag glass. I like the newer phillips driver better, but definitely prefer the older mag glass. An explorer with plus scales would cover most of my daily needs. I still EDC a cybertool 34 but honestly the pliers have not been used yet, but i keep thinking sometime I'll need them, so an explorer would suffice.
I'd go with the plus scales myself. I've probably only used the pen that comes with them less than a handful of times, but it's still nice to have. But, I think the most important consideration is what your intended use is going to be. If you're going to make a Woodsman and then squirrel it away in a backpack or BOB, then I'd say the stay-glow is the better choice, because it'll help you find it when you really need it. On the other hand, if you're planning on doing it for EDC, then I'd say go with the plus scales. Personally, I'd make a Woodsman with stay-glow, and an Explorer +pliers (still not sure what I'd call it, been thinking "Machinist" would be a good name) for EDC use with plus scales. But, that's just me. YMMV of course. :)I'm fond of the Explorer myself. For my needs, my Yeoman is a more economical choice, but I understand the benefit of the full sized Explorer. I'm about to make a woodsman too! I have a junky explorer I got for cheap so I'm going to put the mag/philips layer in a huntsman I just got from Lowtech. The only thing I can't decide is whether I want stayglow or plus scales. This decision is tearing me apart! It isn't hard because of choosing between the glowing or the pen, I just can't decide between the colors!

The Explorer is one of my two favorite SAK's, the other one being the Swisschamp 8).

Well yes, I know the difference.. just wondering what he preferred about the older one. :) (as well as the newer philips)
Unfortunately I don't think that can happen. The new magnifying glass and light are larger so the philips had to get smaller to fit them.Well yes, I know the difference.. just wondering what he preferred about the older one. :) (as well as the newer philips)
Didn't know that, thanks. :)
Now if we could just get them to make a longer one with that steel..
what are those walls made of?
I'm planning on keeping the scissors in both mods I want to do. I'm actually planning on using a Swiss Champ for each, and paring them down to make the aforementioned mods.I'm fond of the Explorer myself. Are you keeping the scissors on the planned pliers mod or taking them off?

Those are old Belgian World War I trenches, where they replaced the original sandbags with concrete ones. They are called "trenches of death" near the cities of Diksmuide and Ieper (famous World War I places).
You can read more about that (and some other World War I sites in Belgium) here (http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,28308.0.html).
^i can see what you are saying about the openers layer, those i don't mind as much. I just find the small blade to be a waste of a spot.

Okay MR... just to throw you a curveball here... one of the mods I've been wanting to do is a Yeoman with a saw! :D Been thinking that would be the perfect hiking/backpacking/outdoors pocket SAK!^i can see what you are saying about the openers layer, those i don't mind as much. My thoughts exactly :tu: If there was a nailfile in place of the small blade, I would love my Explorer even more. I want a Yeoman though, as it's a perfect mating of my two faves, the Compact and Explorer. Plus 3 layers is more pocketable than 4, but 4 is definitely doable, even moreso if there was a nailfile in place of the small knife ;)
But why the nailclippers when you have the SAK scissors?
And what do you do with the marker?

I'll check in before this dies. I'm new here but I've had a Vic SAK in my pocket for about 40 years. The Explorer has the perfect tool set for me. I prefer two blades to one and I like the "real" openers better than the combo tool. Unfortunately I find 4 layers a bit too thick most of the time. Hence, my carry knife since 1996 has been a Yeoman and before that a Scientist.
Why on earth Victorinox does not mass produce this flavor is beyond me.
Syph is correct and it aggravates me that I can't have a Yeoman without having someone make it for me. The Compact is near perfect for me, as is the Explorer, so naturally the Yeoman would be my ideal SAK. It's just frustrating that I can't simply buy one.

I watched two Yeomans sell on EBay in the last month, so they're around. It would be more fun to make one. I tore down a tinker and used the phillips to make an apprentice.(Baby steps) Next I'll remove some bent scissors from an Explorer to make my Passenger. This might be as good a carry knife as the Yeoman. I plan to carry one for a while and see how much I miss the scissors. If all that goes well I'll turn my Compact into a Scientist. I carried one years ago and liked it. I picked up a couple of new Scientists 10 or so years ago but they seem to be so valuable on Ebay now I think I make one for my own use. It wouldn't be as much fun if you could just go down to the store and buy one?
buy a beater 3 or 4 layer sak for a few dollars. make it into a 2 layer or 1 layer. Rinse repeat.

Good suggestion :tu: The thing is, I have no equipment with which to experiment. Is there anything I really need to have to try this, or can mods be done without anything special?

You really do not need much tools or space to get started. Check out the Mod Squad for everything you need to know.

i agree. for what you'd end up paying for a real yeoman it just doesn't to make sense to use it as edc when you can buy a used explorer and a bantam. I feel terrible tearing apart a perfectly good compact just for the combo tool and suggest the using the bantams.
there really aren't that many tools needed to do these mods. the sticky threads on the top of the mod section do a great job explaining it.

I didn't have any special equipment, and found I only needed a very minor investment in tools. I already had a bench vise with an anvil on it, so if you don't have something like that, I think it would be a good idea to get one, though you could probably do without it. I also bought a center punch for making divots in the ends of the pins to help with drilling them out, and a set of small pin punches for knocking out the pins once I had drilled the peen out of the bushing. I used a hand-drill, and I'm sure I could have gotten better results if I had a drill-press, but it wasn't necessary. I also bought a small jeweler's hammer to use for peening the new pins.
I took apart a Compact and an old Explorer to make my Yeoman. While I did end up mismatching the blade and the side plate when I put it back together (there's an annoying bit of side to side play in the blade as a result), it was a very enlightening and rewarding experience. :tu: Definitely took me out of my comfort zone, and really forced me to think back and remember what I learned in a semester of machine shop in high school. But, I'm glad I did it, and am looking forward to making more mods in the future, once I can afford to buy appropriate donors.
@stot ^ lol, good point. I believe it is still showing them respect by giving them new lives. It's similar to art that deconstructs different art and reuses it in new ways.
airports and the internet have really changed the game in how these little guys can get around.
Monrogue, I would say we are really just taking about model semantics, don't be worried. I believe technically the yeoman to be an explorer with one less layer. Yes you get the same thing adding a phillips/mag layer to compact, except you'd have the hook with file that the compacts have. The original yeomans don't have that.
My point is save that awesome compact and use it for what it is (great 2 layer knife) and sacrifice a bantam, which you can find cheap.
yes the nail nick sits a little lower. again nothing that would make me personally want to use a compact over a bantam for it.
opinions may differ
Here is what I normally carry instead of my Explorer. I love that it has the inline Philips and mag glass like the Explorer, but with Pliers and Awl. I'm thinking I am going to start carrying the Explorer for a while though.

Just let me know! :) As a rough guesstimate, I'd say it'd take an afternoon to do it all from the beginning; taking apart the donors, setting new pins, doing the assembly, and pinning it all back together and putting scales on. I'm sure someone more accomplished than I at modding could do it in a fraction of the time, but now that I've already done one, I've got a pretty good idea of how to streamline the process. My Yeoman was my first, and so far only, mod. Good to hear all of this. I have an explorer and Bantam for possible modding uses. I have been drooling over a Yeoman. We are basically neighbors. :D
In all seriousness i'm not ready to donate my Explorer to be torn down right now, but I am planning on buying another when I get the money and using the existing Explorer as Mod material. If your interested then we should talk. :tu:
Is that Alox SAK modded? That's a pretty neat combo of tools. My ideal Alox would be the knife/awl layer-scissors layer-mag glass layer with both openers fit side by side at the other end.

Yes it is a Mod by Steve. It is honestly in the top 3 of my favorite SAK's I own. :tu:

Great price... I sold a used one for £10 to a member in need here once, and I thought that was low! :D
I received a clip to attach to my Explorer's keyring for better pocket carry. I am happy to say that it works like a charm and makes the Explorer much less noticeable and uncomfortable to pocket carry. So now I appreciate my Explorer even more :tu: :D

That is how I carry mine and by being tucked to the outside of the pocket, it carries much easier! :tu:
I love my explorer, but I just can't pocket carry it. I tried to today, but I just can't stand the bulk. I just use belt sheaths for my tools.
I tried a suspension clip but it wasn't very comfortable. The belt sheaths just work better. Right now I'm using a freestyle sheath with my spare torch in the side pocket.
That's a nice one :tu: I like the black magnifier

Couldn't resist: just bought a nice, new, black Explorer on Ebay last night. (Very much an impulse purchase.)I'm sure you'll get years of enjoyment from it :tu:

Haha, glad my pics helped to act as an enabler for you ;) Oh, and good luck sticking to the idea of not buying another one until you need it. I've found that many of us here seem to always "need" another MT/SAK ;) :pok:And that "need" never goes away because there are so many models and colours to choose from. I'm constantly browsing Ebay for "Victorinox" drooling away  :D

This would be a much lighter option than my wave.
I was thinking a Yeoman with a saw would be pretty cool. Still not sure about doing the mod though.
I honestly don't need the Woodsman's tool layout; a saw is pretty much useless to me for EDC.
However, an Explorer with a pliers layer would be a LOT more useful for me personally, or even a Yeoman Mechanic (Yeoman with pliers).
You'd lose the awl/reamer by removing the openers layer for the Yeoman, so it wouldn't be there to lose in the first place if making a Yeoman with a file.I was thinking a Yeoman with a saw would be pretty cool. Still not sure about doing the mod though.

I am actually thinking that whenever I can manage to get my Yeoman made from my Compact and Explorer, I may want to add a metal saw/file to it. The only problem with that is the fact that it will make it the same thickness as the Explorer, which I think is just a bit too thick for my liking. In that case, I would have to sacrifice a layer. I am thinking it would have to be the scissors, but I'm assuming that would mean I would lose the hook w/nail file on it (although that would be fine technically since I would have the full size file added anyway). So that would make the tool layers as follows: knife with combo opener, mag/Phillips and metal file. I know I would have the corkscrew as a backspring tool, but I don't know what else would be left. On the Explorer, the mag/Phillips layer has no backspring tool, and I don't know if the metal file allows one. I would hope to have the awl there.

I agree that four layers would be a bit much for pocket carry though, so it really depends on what tools you need/want most.
I've been seriously thinking about making a Cyber Compact actually. Not having the mag-glass would be a drag, but the bit driver layer would more than make up for the loss of the inline phillips, as well as the large and small flathead drivers on the ends of the openers. It'd be three layers, albeit a bit fat for three layers because of the bit driver layer, but it would be as close to a perfect pocket SAK for my needs for EDC as I could get.

Do you know if the file layer allows for a backspring tool? That Cyber Compact sounds cool :tu:Only a few models come with a backside tool on the file layer, and I think one of them is the Ranger/Craftsman. I think it's the mini-chisel tool that comes on the backside of the file, but not sure though, as I haven't had a Ranger in many years. To get what you want, you'd have to get one of those as a donor to get a spring that allows a backside tool for the file, and you might be able to make a reamer fit in that spot, but you'd have to ask Steven or Syph to find out for sure.

Got my Explorer in my pocket today actually. :tu:

The Yeoman does look like a better option for me, as I have found the 4 layer Explorer too thick. That's why the Climber is my choice, but I do like the pen. Where can I buy the Yeoman? What is the actual model and who makes them? Sorry for my ignorance.
I've been deliberating for several days whether or not I would buy the Explorer, but in the end I've decided to do it.
This will be the one:

It's a great SAK. I hope you get along with it well :tu:
I bought the Explorer about an hour ago and was surprised to find out that it was not as bulky as I imagined it to be. The magnifying glass is just great :2tu: and so is the Philips screwdriver and the pair of scissors.
I think this model will become my first choice to carry when I'm not at home. 8)
I want go beyond a 4-layerd model though.

Yeah, it's not too bad for pocket carry. There was a time when I thought it was too bulky, but I've since gotten over that due to carrying 5 layered SAKs in its place. Now the Explorer is the smallest one I have. What are you thinking of for a larger SAK?
I have a pre 83 with the grey mag glass and no hole in the awl as well as a newer model I've put plus scales on it.
Modders-Please stop taking these apart to make yeomans, Putting a mag glass in alox scales is great but please no yeomans as the combo tool suks.
I carry a Climber daily but as the eyes age I find myself wishing for the magnifier. I may have to start carrying an Explorer, probably sooner than later.

Before I purchased my Explorer yesterday, I was somewhat critical about the magnifier, but it soon turned out to be a great tool. It should however have been fitted into a metal frame, but that's really the only minor concern as far is I can see. ;)

I've been sayin' exactly the same. :tu:
The Explorer was the first Victorinox I ever bought (still have it). It' a shame Victorinox never added the saw to it and maybe the file too!!

As for myself, I don't miss the saw, but it would have been nice if the nail file would have been engraved on the back side of the hook as on the Compact. But again that's a strictly personal thing.
The magnifier looks somewhat cheap in a plastic frame, doesn't it? But it's a great tool nevertheless. :tu:
Explorer with added saw is a Woodsman, Explorer with added metal file is a Modeler. Both retired sadly, but the Woodsman Lite gets close with adding a saw but swapping the magnifier for a LED. :-\
I'm beginning to think I can never let myself be satisfied with what I already have :ahhh >:D ::)

A metal frame would be cool, and it would look more like it belonged so to speak. As it is now, the magnifier stands out since it's not SS like the rest of the implements around it. Minor issue though. I too would like the metal file added, as well as the nailfile on the hook, which I have said before should be standard for all of the hooks...why it's not is beyond me. I also like the fish scaler as a misc. type tool (don't go fishing though), and it has a ruler. So to me, I think my ideal (beefy) SAK would be the Explorer with the fish scaler, metal file and hook nailfile added.
The magnifier is a handy little thing :tu: The Explorer I recently got has the old 8x glass version. I like it, but I think I prefer the slightly larger view window of the newer version (which I have on my Yeochamp). The only thing with that is that it's only 5x magnification, but it's probably not really a big difference, at least not from what I can tell.
The 8x magnifier was the older style with the grey plastic housing holding a glass lens. When they moved over to the plastic lens (with clear housing) they changed to the 5x magnification. Going buy my eye I'd say the new glass lens (with clear plastic housing) is still 5x magnification.

I think we need a group shot showing the various generations of Explorers, including the Damascus.
I probably won't get chance now until the end of next week - and that's a damn shame because my "White Explorer Plus" is just

Well, I managed to sneak off for 5min, apologies for the quality - its pitch black here in the UK so I had to improvise using a torch
Black - 1st Generation grey housing/glass lens
Red - 2nd Generation plastic housing/plastic Len
Damascus - 3rd Generation plastic housing/glass lens
White - 2nd Generation with white "Plus" scales fitted

I love finding stuff I've "lost". :D Mostly in coat pockets that I haven't carried in months. ;)
I much prefer my 2 explorers(grey mag glass and clear mag glass with plus scales) to the yeoman Ive owned for a few hours. So much is to be said about the 2 tools instead of the combo tool.

After carrying knives with a combo tool for years, recently my opinion has changed to reflect yours. It's three tools, BTW...don't forget about the awl.

And small blade. So much better SAK with just 1 more layer Explorer is apsolute winner.

 Indeed.
However, I do find that the Yeoman is noticeably more pocket friendly than the Explorer. If I am pairing the SAK with another multitool having an awl and screwdrivers, I will carry it instead.

The scientist on the other hand, is as about as slim as a waiter and compared to the yeoman, you only lose the scizzors and awl
Yeoman, Passenger, Scientist... These are all some of my favorite SAKs, and it's a shame that the Explorer is the only one still produced from the same family!
I agree. Except for the 108 mm. combo, it simply looks somewhat flimsy to me.
The combo tool is a much better cap-lifter
My experience is the standard cap-lifter usually takes two passes to complete the job, the combo tool seems to slip less often more often getting it done in one go.The combo tool is a much better cap-lifter
How so? My experience with the two tools over many years has shown that the dedicated cap lifter works better for me.

Im just being a smartass though.

Yeah, I guess you are right so we could call it an alox Pioneer Explorer! :)
Either way, I like it and I think the awl makes it more versatile than a second blade! IMO.

The 1980's era SAKs really seem to appeal to me. I like both celidor and alox models from the 80s. It seems like Victorinox was really on top of their production's quality control in those days. I also grew up in the 80's using SAKs so there is a bit of nostalgia involved as well.
I'm still appreciating with my new ruby Explorer Plus :DThat's a nice one. As I said before, love that Ruby.

+1. I couldn't agree more. Vic was definitely at the top of their game during our childhood, up through the early 90's.
That is a beautiful Explorer you have there.
Yes - very nice. Mine is from the 80's too, but not in such good condition. It's a fine user, but the main blade is a bit bent!
Amazon UK are selling them for £26.26 at the moment. could this be a good time for me to join the Explorer Club?

Thanks Mike! I wouldn't have any of these retired SAKs if it weren't for the generosity and help from my friends here at MTO!
:multi:
P.S. Note that the retired knives are all older than the Explorer, obvious from the older type of keyring attachment. That is, with the exception of the Passenger, which has no keyring.
...and an Explorer "family" photo, with knives that, IMO, never should have been retired.

Good thread bump. I said it elsewhere but I'll say it again here; I'm really liking my new Explorer. :tu: I've also managed to snag one with the new style glass magnifier, though I wasn't bothered by the plastic lensed one TBH.

Wow, over a year since I got my Explorer, I didn't think I'd had it quite that long. Still like it a lot, even if it is plain old red and not a fantastic yellow. :D

i prefer the yeoman but for saks you can go into the store and buy it's a good oneWhile I can see why you would prefer the yoeman, I personally like the seperate driver and canopener implements over the compact tool. For my uses, the screwdriver is a better fit and I find the individual canopener quite faster as well.

Do you find much cans without pullrings any more? I open like 1-2 cans a year,if that, nowadays and then the combotool is more than enough. Since you also have a separate philips on Yeoman the canopener/driver is not necessary in my opinion.
3 layers of the Yeoman is much easier to EDC carry in my opinon without losing much utility, if any.
Can I post my favourite explorer here?
Green plus scales added.

Demel,
there are Victorinox Explorer type SAKs with Pliers
CyberTool 34 (no Magnifier but many bits)
Yeoman-Mechanic (Swiss Bianco sold those -but combo tool ipo usual openers)
and of course Swiss Champ (but that's 8 Layers thick )
You could also just add a Leatherman P4 or PS 4 to your EDC Explorer. (Heresy to suggest that, I know).

Every now and then pullrings fail. Then you still need the can opener.

I still see a lot of cans without ring pulls. Here it often seems to be that branded products, like Heinz or Green Giant, have ring pulls, but supermarket own-brand ones don't.
Harry Ramsden's mushy peas  don't have ring pulls!

I love the Explorer and it was my EDC for a long time as I use the mag lens quite often and like the inline philips alot and I also have an adapter that fits over it with a bunch of 1/4 inch bits if needed.
I am however finding or should I my EDC plans to just go with a Swisschamp as once I was hiking with the misses and she wanted a walking stick so I found a nice one but had a bunch of little branch nubs on it, which I had to try cut off with just a blade cause the Explorer that I had always carried didnt have the little saw and I really could have used that saw so now I want more of my basics covered. Part of it was we didn't plan on the hike, just a last minute thing or I would have swapped out my Explorer with a Ranger (better outside tools).

Explorer = urban or suburban carry
Trekker = rural or hiking carry
Swisschamp = does everything, but is bulky

That's just a matter of preference. I don't find the Swisschamp bulky at all. In fact, it's quite comfortable to use :D

SC might be a bit bulky if carried a certain way but none of those items listed above give me good plier's. Just thought I would post a pic of my old Explorer. My favorite SAK but I don't EDC it. Bought it new in the early 80's I think.
Big fan of the Explorer, use a suspension clip and you won't even know it is there.
Like my Yeoman better but as you know they can't be bought new anymore.
Here is a picture of mine from last year right before we got Lynn's favorite multi tool sorted.

Well it would be against the rules to keep government property and give it away.
On a completely unrelated and totally legitimate and legal matter pm me your address. Lynn also.

I don't know if I'd call the Explorer my 'favorite', but it's still my EDC MT.
I had to use the magnifying glass on it the other day to read the fine print on a burger coupon. It was still good, and I got a free Wendy's cheeseburger with it. NOW we're talking super useful. :D
I also found something weird the other day. It seems if I'm doing harder work with the big blade, the 4-layer SAK works best for grip. My Climbers and super-tinker are too thin, and the Handyman (6 layer) is too thick. I was whittling a branch into a stake, requiring some fairly forceful cuts, and the Explorer was most comfortable. As a lefty, the corkscrew is less of an issue when gripping firmly.
or wherever New Zealand is?
or wherever New Zealand is?
*looks out window*
Found it!
Personally I have trouble deciding on what the perfect SAK is.
The Explorer has the magnifying glass which is pretty handy but the Cybertool has the bit driver that makes it an excellent urban EDC, then again the Ranger has a file which I've found useful plenty of times.
I keep my Explorer near for when I need a magnifier though - there are definitely times when you need to closely inspect some small detail.
Sorry Mark - I wasn't being facetious - I know exactly where yor beautiful country is but I'm a big fan of 'Flight of the Conchords' and it cracks me up when Dave tries to guess where Brett and Jermaine come from. :salute: Nice Explorer too. It's the most fun SAK off all I think.or wherever New Zealand is?

Without doubt! Not only does it come with an extremely useful toolset, but the mag raises the fun bar so high! It's well named too - you really can Explore with it. Unlike the Spartan.

I like the Explorer, and seem to have acquired three different variants* (most recent plastic framed glass magnifier, 2004-onwards all-plastic magnifier and old grey plastic framed magnifier) but they rarely make their way into my pocket for some reason.
* I wonder if this is how collections start ...
Apologies if this has been discussed before... but has anyone managed to start a fire with the current new explorer magnifying glass? I can't seem to get anywhere (though admittedly I haven't used magnifying glass to start fires since teen years!)
On unrelated explorer comments; this truly is a great model. I would like one with added pliers and nail cleaner/file instead of the small knife ;)
The Champion Plus doesn't have pliers, perhaps you meant Swiss Champ
These are the Explorer's that I still have! :tu:Lookin' good Mike. The yellow scales are my favorite, followed by Silvertech :D

Here's a funny thing though, why am I reluctant to take the mini driver from my Spirit's corkscrew attachment (which I doubt I will ever use) and put it in my Explorer (which I probably will)? ???
Time for me to join the club!
I got the Explorer due to it's unique layer of the inline philips and magnifying glass. I could have been good with a Ecoline Climber but I couldn't say no to 1) magnifying glass in a 4-layer SAK 2) inline philips 3) black, Plus scales 4) eyeglass driver
Although honestly, after signing the credit card bill with the pen, I'd rather use the 58mm pen versus the scales version...

Why not just buy spares?
I put the mini driver into all my SAKs that have corkscrews, I also put stainless steel pins in SAKs that have the hole for them but didn't come with them.
You just never know when you might appreciate having these things available.

GOOD CHOICE! Blue rules.
Hey Magentus, does Pikachu have the reamer awl as well? I'm seeing the openers so I'm guessing it does. Do you ever use it instead the IL awl? What was the donor for that IL?
I had a Wenger Handyman and fake crappy SwissChamp growing up. When I was around 21 years old, one of my roommates moved out of state and left behind a "junk drawer" of household tools, saying I could keep any of it I wanted.
Found my first Explorer in there. This was back in the day, but it was already about a 10 year old knife, no hook, gray mag/long phillips, but it did have the sewing eye in the awl. (Looked like Magentus' vintage one) This knife went with me all over the world on a bunch of adventures, and had all the small parts/scissor spring replaced more than once.
One day my friend was visiting and I showed him the knife "oh yeah, remember this?". Even though I had mentioned finding the SAK to him years ago, he didn't realize that it was one of the 2 his father had given to him and his brother. Their dad passed away when they were kids. So of course I had him take it, he didn't even have a SAK anyway (how wass he even getting through life???). But I knew I wasn't done Exploring so I grabbed one used of the 'bay, great condition with the updated tools, and slapped on some cobalt blue plus scales.
This one's been on the job a few times, but hasn't seen any adventures yet, it doesn't feel "charged up" with mojo yet.
Great SAK, the Explorer. Though Climber Lite would also be pretty cool. Mainly I like the IL phillips. But the mag glass is cool cuz it makes the SAK seem like it's for scientists and smarties.
Kirk 13's white one looks like a Doctor!
What are these 2 up to?
Nice! Where'd you pick up those blue plus scales? That's what I wanted originally, but couldn't find any except shops in Europe with a shipping cost that exceeded the price of the scales themselves, so I gave in and got the regular ones.

Can't go wrong with the Explorer! It is my choice for EDC and has been for a long time. I try to carry other sak's but always go back to the Explorer!
This might be way I have three of them. One with the old mag, one with the new mag and one with the previous mag setup! :)

Here is a quick group shot. I included the Swissbianco Yeoman that has sapphire scales cause it is close to an Explorer. :)
I have new ruby scales for the other two but I haven't changed them out yet. The old mag one had sapphire ones on it but I chipped one so I swapped the scales out with what I had at the time. Soon they will all have ruby plus scales!!
The red scaled one with clip has the second mag lens and the ruby one has the newest mag lens. The Yeoman also has the newest mag lens! :)
Bought one of my used Explorers some new plus scales.

I kept thinking I've seen a translucent blue scale recently, and it was on your Explorer, it's all coming back to me now after seeing your orange lanyard.

I thought for a moment that my Sapphire Explorer inspired your change to blue scales. :)I bet subconsciously your Sapphire Explorer was the inspiration because I know I complimented it a while back.

Here is an updated pic of my Explorer's. I have two old style and two latest style mag lens. I just put emerald green plus scales on one of the new style ones and thinking about putting a set of the old style too. Oh and I also put a set on my new Swisschamp that had black scales so I had to include it in the pic! :)
Poll - Should I put emerald's on the old style one in top right corner or should I put the black plus ones from the SC or just leave it as it with ruby ones? :tu:
Thx.

Concerning your poll, my own preference is to leave good configurations alone. For example, if the stock red is in good shape, I don't replace the scales just for cosmetic appeal. When evaluating a possible purchase, I consider variety a plus, e.g., BSA, hunter green, black, etc. If the tools are in great shape and the scales are dinged or chipped, I would have no hesitation in applying new and interesting scales after a thorough cleaning and conditioning.

The Explorer that I did put the emerald's on did need replacing as they ones on it were older red ones that weren't the "plus" ones! LOL I mainly replaced scales for the plus versions on the ones I use or if the scales need it like you mentioned. That said, I wanted to tryout the emerald ones so I picked up a couple of sets to see and really wanted a set for my only Swisschamp (at this time)! I now have plenty or even too many sets of scales here vs actual sak's I own!
I too try to find other sak's that I am interested in with other scale colors but that is harder to do most times.

Do you have a photo with the emerald scales?
BTW, this thread has inspired me to review my own Explorers and to at least count them (11). I'll need a closer look but a quick perusal shows that I have at least one all-plastic magnifier. I think the rest are split with the majority grey-framed glass magnifier and the balance clear-framed glass magnifier.
So do people like plus scales? I am fan of smaller tools Explorer being probably the largest SAK I can carry around, but I like normal scales more as I have no use for the pin or pen.Yes, definitely- I don't get much use from the pen but it's really handy to have when you do need one, and the pin I use regularly to prod stuff.
Do you enjoy scales with the pen?

I first started getting the plus scales cause I was finding them at a very good price so they were the same cost or less of the non plus ones. I will admit I don't use the pen much but have used the pin a few times or more. I also think that why not have them both when it doesn't add much if any more weight and they fit in the same size package of the Explorer or Swisschamp and by that I mean it doesn't change the size or shape of the sak. :)
Sure appreciating my Explorer today!
I sure an Bill!!

Guess I might post here as well. Got an Explorer a couple of weeks ago and having trouble getting the other models some pocket time. The Explorer might be the one! Never thought I would end up in 4 layer country but the huntsman showed the way and here I am!
About the pin, I don't have the plus scales but there is still a spot for I pin. Outfitted it with a pin day one and now I mini screwdriver is on its way

Explorer is my fav so congrats on getting one and liking it. It is even handier to have the pin and mini driver with it as it makes a very nice tool set.
I carry one most of the time unless I am experimenting with others to see if I can go more minimal or just to see if I can go bigger with like a Swisschamp or Champ Plus! I have four of them now and carried this one in honor of St. Patricks Day on Friday as well as Four Layer Friday! It was great that it fit in to both occasions! :)
I have had the emerald one in my pocket today running errands too! :tu:

:tu:

Great looking scales Sir Mike!!
I'm going to go get my Explorer now and carry it!

Ruby red is a good choice too! Here is an older pic that kinda sucks but shows the four Explorer's and a Swisschamp after I put the green scales on them. As you can see, I have the Ruby and Sapphire also! :)

I need to add a solid blue scale Explorer!
Mine getting some sun with its cousin, the Woodsman.
My beloved Explorer sees a good deal of use from my watch repair kit. I find the mag glass indispensable and straight pin is perfect for unlatching many battery covers.

All three of these purchases have arrived and they look great in person! I already have a Sapphire, White, Black and Red (plus Camo scales). I am looking forward to a group photo of the various scale colors.
Here are the new additions with the seller photos:

After seeing a photo of someone's blue Explorer on this site, I was hooked! The problem was that I couldn't find one. I did see some blue scales from a Switzerland seller on e-bay but I have a preference for keeping my purchases within the continental US, probably to limit complications. After several months of searching, I was amazed to see a blue Explorer for sale and the same seller was offering a yellow Explorer (both "Buy-it now" offerings). I was beside myself with joy since I had just purchased the Emerald Explorer (probably should have bought a Lottery ticket :) ). So, keep looking! They are out there!

Are you keeping the scissors on the planned pliers mod or taking them off?
Well, it isn't available in my country, but that doesn't mean I don't like it. I think what it misses from being perfect is a light, but thinking I can get that externally(although I would like having EVERYTHING I need in a single SAK(magnifier, LED, Phillips, openers/combo tool, scissors, pen optionally small blade) that is impossible, but Yeoman and Explorer get VERY close, alongside Cybertool Lite(cheaper one of the two SAKs that have both the LED and the magnifier, the other being swisschamp XAVT- Vic's largest SAK yet.)
I received a clip to attach to my Explorer's keyring for better pocket carry. I am happy to say that it works like a charm and makes the Explorer much less noticeable and uncomfortable to pocket carry. So now I appreciate my Explorer even more :tu: :D

I'm new to the idea of modifying a SAK. How does one go about adding something like the pliers?

As far as I know, new regular scales have the pin hole. My Hiker(a smaller model) had it when I bought it new on amazon 2015. I don't see why it would be different. :think:The Explorer is one of my two favorite SAK's, the other one being the Swisschamp 8).

I've got a Swiss Champ and a Huntsman BSA (Phillips sd instead of the corkscrew) but I also have an Explorer on the way. The Swiss Champ has pretty much everything I need but when I want pocket carry capability, I think the Explorer is going to get the nod. I suppose I can upgrade the scales on the Explorer if needed but I don't think I will need to.
The Swiss Champ sits in the pouch on my belt for most EDC. But again, when I need a slimmer, equally capable SAK, the Explorer will suit me well.
Does the regular Explorer model have a slot for the pin? Or does that require the extra scales? In looking at my SC, I imagine the new scales are required. Where does one order the upgraded scales?

My Explorer arrived today- it's always exciting to get a new SAK, especially when it's one you know will be in the EDC rotation!
Beautiful little toolbox of course- nice, crisp in and out of the tools and the magnifier is magnificent. Seems clearer and slightly more resolution than my Swiss Champ but that's probably just because it's fresh out of the box. If this post allows, I'll post a side by side with my Huntsman BSA which is about the same except the Huntsman has a saw and Phillips combo and the Explorer has the magnifier and corkscrew. I've got the micro screwdriver coming later this week for the corkscrew.
I may get the Plus scales for this Explorer but we'll see.

Does it have the hole in the scales for the pin? It should since it looks like a newer model. I wouldn't upgrade it to the Plus scales unless you NEED or WANT the pen or the scales are in bad shape, which they don't look like!
My Explorer arrived today- it's always exciting to get a new SAK, especially when it's one you know will be in the EDC rotation! For your information, there are two versions of the new large magnifier. One with a plastic lens and a newer one with a glass lens. That might account for the difference that you perceive?

I'm wanting to order myself an Explorer but have several questions I thought I'd throw at you guys.
First, it looks like Victorinox went back to a glass lens on the magnifier in 2012, and from 5x to 6x. If I order from Amazon, it looks like I could save a few bucks but I wonder what the odds are of getting an older plastic 5x magnifier? (Maybe I should just order straight from Vic.
I'm probably just going to stick with the standard explorer, though I notice on Amazon the plus is still available. I'm thinking a pin and pen probably isn't worth the extra 10 bucks or so. Anyhow, I am reading in this thread about later getting plus scales. I can't seem to find these on Vic's web site or much reference to the plus at all. I'm thinking that model might be going by the wayside?
Yes the plus version is gone from the current Vic catalogue. Victorinox don't sell replacement scales directly but there are various internet retailers that do, try ebay and amazon.
My latest addition :climber:
Started using a sheath again. Not always the most practical or aesthetically pleasing, but I do appreciate the extra pocket real estate.
Great pic Bill!
The nearest I have to the Explorer are these two.
Both get occasional carry, but my Explorer got sold on.

Oh! I didn't even know it was Mod. There are simply not enough cool multi-layer Wengers in the used markets.

Yeah, finding the right Wenger can be hard work alright. I'm not sure if that's because there weren't enough produced, or that folks really don't want to let them go
Yeah, I built this as I wanted an inline Phillips but have no love for that aligator wrench thing that's normally opposite :-\ I got this one off an in-line skater model (but I think there's a few other models that have it) and dumped it in the middle of a Traveller, so it's like a Wenger version of an Explorer, but with the carabiner instead of mag glass

HELL Yes sawmanYou've got thirty-four if them?!
That's why I've got34 of them.
Funnily enough that's exactly the reason why I DO like the Explorer. Here in the UK, it's very unwise to pull out a knife, whether it be non-locking or whatever. But the small blade on the Vic's seems to be perfectly acceptable and totally unthreateningHonest, non-trolling question. Even the large blade is only about 3 or so inches long. What consequences are there for opening a 3 inch, non-locking blade for non-assaultive use?
That's what it's all about Zed!

I saw this thread over the weekend and since the Explorer is my favorite SAK, I definitely have appreciation for this remarkable tool!
Since I spent some time organizing my SAKs today so that like SAKs are grouped together, I decided to get a count of my Explorers. Right now, they number2322 (one turned out to be a Woodsman and was hiding with the Explorers) and counting (possibly 2 more to join the collection)!

A Woodsman? That's not a bad knife to find in any group!

glassy companion to the Shiny tool
Silly question coming at y'all.
Do they make a similar tool to the explorer with something else in the place of the magnifying glass?
Mainly concerned with having the 3 under tools, knife scissors, and especially having the philips out the front.
Thanks
Silly question coming at y'all. There is some with a light instead of the magnifying glas. I think huntsman lite and spartan lite if I remember correctly..

The inline philips driver takes up half the space in a SAK layer and is typically paired with the magnifier, which takes up the remaining space within the layer. I can't think of any exceptions but there are so many SAKs past and present that I don't know for sure.
On a lighter side, you have a good question but posting it in the Explorer's Appreciation thread is like fingernails on the blackboard since the magnifier is one of the reasons many of us like the Explorer. :)
The people in this Swiss Army Knights forum are friendly and helpful and if there is a tool like the one you are seeking, there is a strong likelihood that someone knows about it. Alternatively, there is a group of folks with the skills to modify SAKs and create configurations that Victorinox hasn't created.
Good luck!
Jim
Thanks guys. Appreciate the response. I was just curious, not saying the mag isn't useful. In fact I really want a explorer. Looks to be a fantastic piece. Thanks guys, hope to join your crew soon!

Just got the explorer. Couldn't wait, had to have it!! Question, is it supposed to come with the pin needle? Mine has the spot for it, but not there. Can these be bought off the shelf to fit from a store or something, (I don't have any laying around to try.)

Congratulations on your first Explorer! Both of my original Explorer Plus purchases from Amazon came with the pin in place but with all my many purchases both new and used (just purchased my 25th Explorer), it is a coin toss as to whether an Explorer will arrive with a pin or not. Older models had scales with no hole for the pin. Newer ones are likely to have the hole. I mostly ignore the pins since I don't really have a use for one but I imagine that most pins available in stores will fit.

I saw that. Went into Michaels hobby store and they have a box of a thousand for like $5... but I only need 1! And the need is subjective at this point. Carried it today and still don't get the Explorer.
A Ranger is like 1mm thicker but adds so much more usefullness for me. Going to look for one of those I think. Or maybe a Master Craftsman.

Carried it today and still don't get the Explorer. The files nice, the saw I already touched on briefly, these saws this size are just ok imo. But no out the front philips, or magnifying glasses... the out the front philips really is a great great feature and is proving to be amazingly useful on a SAK. All my Leathermans have a saw and file anywhoo , so there's that. But yeah they make enough to fit everyone's needs ultimately. And if not, that's why there's modders modding

Just got this old NIB Explorer. Best I can tell it's late 70's - early 80's era. I'll cawl it my Birth Year Explorer :tu:

You can discern '70's and '80's by the inlay. Before '80 it was nickel-silver, after that stainless steel.
Pretty cool to find an Explorer NIB by the way. That's really cool.
Ever since I got my Explorer I know I have a soft spot for this one. I've been carrying it alongside my Handyman for the past weeks. Great SAK.
Appreciating my Explorer today :DNice one El C!
Does anyone sell a explorer with the wooden handle scales like the Evo series?Or can you purchase replacement handles scales like the wooden evos? Please help :salute:

I replaced the scales on the rest with plus scales.

That little mag glass gets useful and handy. I don't even wear glasses, but find use for it. And with a straight philips, in my mind the explorer is great!Nice review Lynn! :like: :tu: :tu:

My first SAK was this Explorer that I bought 40 years ago for $16. The end of the original tweezers was aluminum. It's still my favorite, and now wearing new scales. I have two more early-80s models, one still new in box. I wish Vic would go back to the 8x glass magnifier though. Is the philips still magnetized? ???

Yep. It's official. I swapped out my Stay Glow Super Tinker for my Explorer (one with the old style mag glass).
Now, I'm just trying to figure out what cool scales I want to put on it. I put the Stay Glow on the Super Tinker, and those are cool. Now I'm just trying to think of how to best personalize the Explorer. Both the G10 and solid copper Swiss Bianco scales are very cool, but I'm also considering Emerald Plus scales.

I love the Explorer but have a hard time with pocket carry as the four layers make it tough so I normally carry the Super Tinker instead. I wish I could get by that and maybe if I carried it more, I would get used to it. It has the tools I need as I really use the mag glass quite often.
Maybe I need a custom with the opener layer, blade and mag. glass/inline philips! That would get me to three layers! :D

I'm a big Woodsman fan but there's a soft spot for the Explorer with its opposing magnifier and Phillips, one of the features I value most on the five Woodsman, two Champions and two Scientists along with the Swiss Champ in the stables.Do you make your own scales btw?
Got this red Explorer Plus and added it to the stables . . .
Wanted to do something special with it to distinguish it from the others with magnifiers and Phillips so I put these nice titanium scales on it to dress it up and have something different.
Turned out much better than I had anticipated and I'm extremely pleased with the result.

No, I don't. I would except I don't have the tooling or time to create the precision tooling for making wood scales, and don't have the machine shop equipment to make metal ones. Swiss Bianco had these made a couple years ago along with some copper ones in a slightly different design. Had them for sale on his site and on eBay. Snagged one set of each while they were available. Put the copper ones on a Tinker.

Awl this latest talk about the Explorer reminded me i haven't touched mine in months, so i played around with it a bit, and just remembered why it doesn't work for me for regular edc pocket carry... Just too darn big and bulky to justify it. The Phillips/mag layer is too thick for the real usability I'd get out of it. I got a just as good Phillips solution and can save up a lot of space and bulk... :-\

I don't think there is much difference in width/thickness from the Huntsman to the Explorer, maybe a 1mm so you should be fine! :)
I will say that I when I wear jeans I prefer to use a suspension clip and let it ride right down the outside inseam but when I wear casual pants or cargo type pants I just pocket carry without any issues!

Yes the Huntsman is slightly thinner but not by much. But i don't really edc any sak over 3 layers anyway, just can't justify the extra tools, the weight and bulk. If o go to a specific envoirmant that i can justify it ill take them occasionally, but regular urban edc 3 layers with scissors is the max ill go.
Regarding the mag glass, my eyes are not what they used to be as well, but for magnification, ill just take a pic with my phone and enlarge, much more quick and effective, with no extra weight...

Oh but i did tried it, i carried it last year for a couple of months or so, that's why i say i cant really justify carrying a 4layer sak for those tools. I really just hate to carrying stuff with me, so the fewer and lighter and best tool/usability ratio the better.
I too had one or two situations i wish a has a mag glass with me, but that's life. If we start to anticipate awl the tools we "may" need eventually, soon we would be carrying a tool box in the pocket...

I am afraid I understood you perfectly.
As an example, the only time I ever need a can opener is when the pull tab of a can breaks off. If at that point, I have a tool in my pocket or in my bag that has a can opener, I can eat.
I am not planning for every eventuality that can happen, but having some things on me that cover some eventualities helps a lot. If I look at a SAK Pioneer with your perspective, then can opener, the bottle opener, and the awl are redundant, because I don't even use them 3 times a year. Then I better carry a Solo.

I actually agree with what you've said above. But that's just the point, i only need a few basic tools that cover the basics and can be used for improvised uses that hehe nothing to do with their intended function...
I was only giving the example how i feel the extra phillips/mag layer (for me, for my use) doesn't justify the extra weight and bulk.
I can use other means of magnification, and I've already have a good tool for Philips screws (can opener), not to mention my bit system if i need it, so why would i need that extra layer...? Not to mention those too tools only have (practically) one use/function, the phillips could serve as a great glass breaker as well, but that's pretty much it.
You've mentioned, for example, the can opener and bottle opener, the actual functions of opening tin cans or pop bottle caps are at the bottom basement of my priority list, however those are my two most used tools on a sak, even more than the blade itself. I've improvised so many uses and tasks with those two tools that are just to many to mention. Similar thing for all other most used tools.
That's the beauty of sak's, even more the more simple ones, the amount of things/uses you can improvise with those implements. Almost nothing on a sak is ever "the right tool" for anything, just the beat possible that you have on your pocket to help you with a task in hand, in a pinch.

Explorer White Christmas 2017
I'm a bit late to the party, but I found this on an unsuccessful hunt for a 2018 Christmas Sportsman.
The lady actually had two! So she still has one on display.
I'm afraid this one will not see a lot of use. Perhaps this christmas unwrapping gifts!
On a side note, I really dig the latest version of the magnifying lens (clear fitting, glass lens). It's a good trade-off between magnification and lens diameter.

What is the magnification on the new mag glass?
I prefer the old grey housing one for its 8x magnification, while on the other side, I really like the looks of the transparent housing.

The current version is 6x according to the wiki.

My Explorer has the new glass magnifier. The wider field of view is welcome for reading fine print and I find 6x magnification sufficient.
The only negatives are the flimsy-feeling housing and that the lens can occasionally come out and perhaps get lost. My used Explorer came with the lens loose in the package. It was easy to pop back in, though, and I haven't been able to pop it out again. A couple of tiny dabs of epoxy would secure it for keeps.
...
I'd rather have a nail file tool than the small blade. :tu:Agree!!!
I just re read that review and went and got mine!
I added a micro-driver and glass headed pin to mine. Plus a temporary lanyard. I haven't decide if I'm going to grind off the key ring attachment yet.Nice addition there! :like: :tu:

That reminds me of a review of the Explorer on the Victorinox site. This gentleman is a Physics professor, I believe, who has carried a SAK since 1961 and now carries the Explorer exclusively.

Is there a secret to balancing the SAK for photo’s??? I just can’t get mine to act right.
Great photo :like: :tu:
It really is kind of a pocket friendly Swisschamp!
That is indeed a nice Explorer :like:
The Explorer Plus was a nice surprise for me. I bought mine off fleabay as just an Explorer. I was very pleasantly surprised when it arrived. I had wanted this SAK after reading up on the different models and when I got it in hand I was not disappointed at all. It quickly dominated pocket time. The inline phillips is really what sets this SAK apart. Heck any SAK with the inline phillips is a win.
My Explorer over the years has had to sit out from time to time in favor of my Swisschamp and a variety of other SAKs I was trying out. It has never sat for very long or ever got placed into the SAK drawer. There is just to much to like about the Explorer if you can do the layers. Mine lives in my Skinth and my older one in my hike pack. These are go to tools when I don't want to have to decide what to bring. Having my Explorer with me is like having a trusted friend. I know what it can and cannot do ( which is very little ). The addition of the plus scales are nice and the mini driver just adds to the utility of this wonderful SAK. I dream sometimes that VIC would make an 84mm version someday. Until then the Explorer will always be one of my most favorite SAKs.
Today felt like an explorer day.....

Did someone say Explorer's? I can't live without mine (the three amigo's) and even though I try others, I always come back to the Explorer! Usually carry the one in the middle with Ruby Plus scales! ;)Nice selection! :tu:

Thanks! You'd get frost bite trying to find it! :ahhh
Nice! I like the Silvertech scales! I also have the White Tech/Snow style scales (not sure what they are called) but I don't have another Explorer to put them on! Of course since we have quite a few feet of snow here, white scales may not be the best idea! :)
There is something very cool about Silver Tech scales. :tu:They really do have a "look". Almost like they are what Vic should have as standard scales in the 21st century. I like the traditional red, but the SilverTech would look more relevant these days. IMO of course.

So I've been seriously looking into the Explorer model lately. As much as I hate to admit it, the magnifier is quickly becoming indispensable to me. I've gotten old enough now that my bifocals just aren't cutting it for certain jobs anymore, and it's time to end the strategic placement of magnifying glasses throughout my home.
Since I've been carrying the Warthog Swisschamp, the magnifier has become a companion to me, allowing me to do tons of little jobs that I often just gave up on or settled for botching up. The Phillips screwdriver has also proven to be absurdly handy. But........ I have a feeling that once the dog days of summer arrive, and the daytime heat grows to sweltering, that the SwissChamp may feel a little too heavy and bulky. So logically speaking, the Explorer is the model to move down to, as the Yeoman is no longer available.
But what is it with used Explorers? I've bought tons of used Swiss Army knives over the years, and all have been pretty much in new condition, hardy used. Other than some scratches in the scales, they clean up quite nicely. But I bought two used Explorers maybe ten or 15 years back, and both have some serious use on them. Once has two worn and scratched up blades. One has kinks in the blades and tools. I just bought another used Explorer last week, really wanting that old style glass magnifier, and I can't even describe the damage to the main blade. It looks like the nail nick side of the blade had a dremel taken to it. So strange. I just ordered another last night, hoping to strike gold this time.
Does the Explorer just invite a harder life than other models, or have I just gotten totally unlucky thus far?

Maybe the name "Explorer" invites people to go all out on them? Like a subconscious nudge..
I did get in a new style Explorer yesterday, which I'll be equipping with yellow plus scales when they arrive. I've always wanted to carry a bright yellow SAK, so this is finally my chance. :woohoo:Not plus scales, but how is this Explorer for a yellow SAK?
I really like the toolset on the Explorer. I find myself using the magnifying glass more and more for the fine print on labels and other stuff. The inline phillips is also heavily used and better than the phillips on the back or the can opener tip.
Although I do have to confess the Explorer has not been seeing a lot of carry since I managed to get my hands on a Yeoman. The width difference just makes the Yeoman a nicer fit for pocket carry.

Absolutely!! It's a pocket friendly Swisschamp! One without the "workshop" tools, basically.
For many years the Explorer has been one of my go-to SAKs. I just recently added some brushed Ti plus scales from Swiss Bianco.

I was able to get my work to order custom SAK's to give away at a customer appreciation event. We ordered tinkers and our company logo was inlaid in metal on the scales, they turned out sweet! :woohoo:Well thats cool! :like:
I removed the scales on one of the tinkers and put them on a newly acquired Explorer. I love it!

Its one of my favorites in 91mm. I've tried others yet I keep coming back to the Explorer. The yellow lanyard one is my beater. I am not afraid to go hard with it. My ruby is one I work but no where near the other. My newest will be set aside just in case I my beater gives up.

I feel the same way about the Explorer; something about the tool set for me just keeps me coming back whenever I try a different model. I have one with red plus scales that I EDC and one with blue sapphire scales that is just for use at work. I do need to get a spare in case anything happens to the other two....:salute:
Carried my newest Explorer yesterday. I've got one in a Skinth that is my beater which I dont hesitate to use on any and everything. This newest one I'll abuse a little less :D. It'll be one I'll grab just because. I was looking at my Wenger SI and thinking an Alox Explorer might be my ultimate SAK :dunno:.That would be awesome! But you could always make one yourself?
Dear Victorinox, please make a 84 and 93mm Exloprer so I can make the determination which Explorer is best for me. Please and thank you

I also bought the Christmas edition last year and I haven't carried another one since then. (Although I also carry the MiniChamp for the little file and stuff)Great carry! :like:
I love the way it looks and it has all the items I need. I love mine!!!
Here's my complete EDC.

Aloha, what Skinth model do you carry your Explorer in? I've been toying with the idea of getting one.
Long day but heres my Skinths.

My early '80's gray frame. It's definitely a user knife, but I like carrying it :DNice :like:
I actually prefer the newer mag for field of view Tony, but I have a feeling that the gray frame might be a better fire starter.I'm new at Explorer, got it For the mag. We will 'see' :salute:

I think this is my first contribution to the Explorer thread. I bought this knife sight-unseen, described as "used, good working order." I bought it for parts as I'm going to build a couple Yeomen and Scientists for family members. This one arrived and it appears completely unused. It's got a small-v VSSR shank and literally does not appear to have ever been used, right down to the remnants of the factory lubricant on the joints. Way too nice to break apart so I'll be keeping and using it.
Anyway, my kid had just made himself a big lumberjack breakfast so I grabbed a quick pic with the Explorer. Fun stuff.

Finally. And old glass magnifier Explorer in sensational condition. Other than some scuffs on the scales, the knife appears to be completely unused. This is from my favorite generation of 91mm SAKs. Grey housing and glass lens. Riveted scissors and package hook. Thick tang main blade with crossbow stamp. Stronger corkscrew. Awl with sewing eye. Explorer perfection.

Did someone say Explorer's? I can't live without mine (the three amigo's) and even though I try others, I always come back to the Explorer! Usually carry the one in the middle with Ruby Plus scales! ;)
Nice trio there...are those green jelly scales available as replacement items or just as limited edition? I’ve looked for them but they don’t seem to come up anywhere and I have and old Swiss Champ that would look very nice in a set of these. :hatsoff:Doris Martino has them on the ‘bay:
You should TS!!!it counts! Looking good!
I switched the scales on my EDC Explorer to the Stayglow Boy Scout scales and I'm lovin it more.
Now it's a matched set with my Mate that I put Stayglow scales on a while ago, and paired it with a sweet little imported Italian knife with real Stag scales which a patient gave me for my Birthday.
:woohoo: Cool beans! My MODest attempts at modding.

Can't fault your thinking. The inline is very specific as is the mag glass. I don't mind the can opener but for me the added reach and ability to tackle more recessed screws is valuable.
I've said this before. I'm unlikely ever to choose the Explorer for outside pocket carry. Too thick and I don't need the Phillips/magnifier and scissor layers. I do, however, find it an excellent kitchen tool. It handles well, and with it I can open packages; tighten pot and pot lid handles; inspect ingredient lists in fine print; slice frozen ginger; pull corks (v. rarely).:tu:
Aloha

Any idea of age of your knife pouch? Are they still made and sold in this style.
Also, like a bone head I found the mod forum AFTER posting this.

The Magnifying Glass was first introduced in 1973 and featured a glass lens with a Grey plastic housing. In 2007 the Magnifier was changed to a new model with a transparent plastic housing and a plastic lens. The 2007 magnifier has a slightly lower level of magnification, and a slightly wider area of view due to the slimmer housing and lower magnification.

I’m pretty sure I have/had a Swiss champ from the 90s with the clear plastic magnifier? I think it changed well before 2007?

Great to see your Explorers Steve :tu: #2 with pliers will be a great mod :whistle:Thanks, Max.
I just found this thread and am happy to join the Explorer club! :)
I have three, all with the gray-rim magnifier. Because of its stronger magnification, that's the one I prefer. As for the small field of view, try this trick: Hold the lens up to your eye like a jeweler's loupe, then bring the item you want to examine up to it.
One of my Explorers is pre-1991 (no hook), the other two have hooks.
My first (the pre-'91 with red scales) I got at an estate sale for $8, but it was in bad shape, most tools were really stiff. I managed to bring it back to life, detailed here: https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,87409.0.html
The second one (post-'91 with red scales) I got on eBay and it's in good shape. I'm going to mod it, adding pliers and black Plus scales. Still trying to decide if I want to add a wood saw also.
The third (post-'91 with black scales) was another eBay find, but with messed up scissors. I managed to fix those - https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,87693.0.html (Yes, the blades on the it were well-used by the previous owner, like 1-2mm of width gone.)
I've been carrying the pre-'91 since I repaired it, though have temporarily switched to the black one to test it out now that the scissors work.
For me, the Explorer is a great combination of tools and size. Easy for me to pocket-carry on a suspension clip. I also carry a Mini Champ so have a lot of options between the two of them. If I'm anticipating needing even more, I switch up to the Swiss Champ.
You're awesome. I finally bought an Explorer so I could be cool like all of you, and now you're going to make me want to rip it apart and add pliers. :facepalm:thanks for the mag tip :tu:

Welcome to the modder's club!
I never thought about building my own until I got on this forum. See what it does to you? ;)
Then I had to buy several Explorers so I wasn't ripping apart my only one.
Then I was buying other SAKs that looked interesting.
Then I noticed some Wengers that looked interesting.

I'm in! I've been carrying an Explorer since February and it has become my new favorite SAK!...trad Red but love that Green!
Its such a good toolset. The green look nice. Plus scales really add very useful implements. Just yesterday I got a nasty splinter. The mag glass and pin made quick work of it.:iagree:
[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ] [ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]Now that's an oldie that looks to be in great shape. Did you remove the advertising from the front scale or did you get it that way?

The Explorer is on my list to buy but I got a little side tracked with others lately.
I'm living the same situation lately ! :drink:If it’s any consolation you could use the explorer magnifying glass to look at the bottom of the rabbit hole
It's in an endlessly deep rabbit hole we fell in ! :ahhh
Yes it is. While I still hold the Explorer in the highest regard I have alternated with other SAKs. I do really enjoy the tool set very much. That mag glass has really come in handy more than just for exploring the small world around.I second the usefulness of the mag glass, especially when having to read the tiny letters on those tiny button cell batteries.
Om starting to use the mag glass more than the blade !
:iagree:
Always liked the layer, just need it more often now.

Just finished putting a set of SilverTech scales in an old Explorer I bought some time ago. Awlso got a paracord lanyard and a mini SD added.
8) 8)
I like this new look a lot. So much so, I'm tempted to EDC it (even without the usual 3+ backups). I don't even know who I am anymore...

For my next SAK I'm really torn between the Explorer and the Compact. Both have a lot of desirable features
It is easily my favorite and preferred SAK.
Explorer installed a clip to a Leatherman sheath today. Awl and Philips used.
[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]
Nice. Where'd you get the clip?
Well said, sir. I too have not carried an Explorer for 30+ days because of the Alox Challenge. Though I love the thinness and aesthetic of Alox, its nice to have an Explorer back in my pocket. Its my all time fave.I hadn't either powernoodle for the same reason.
I have such mixed feelings about the Explorer!
I love it for nostalgia reasons - it was my first SAK that I got while in the Boy Scouts.
But...
I'm really of two minds about the Phillips/mag glass layer. Sure, they are fine tools. The problem is that the 2D can opener Phillips can do 90 - 95% of what the 3D Phillips can do. Not to mention the fact that the driver is too thick to reach many recessed screws I come across. It's also the wrong size - I wish it were more of a #0/#1 as opposed to the #1/#2 size that it is. That would make it have somewhat less overlap with the Can Opener.
Also, it's too short (e.g. - too short to reach screws on a door knob, for example)! My original Explorer is a mid 90s model and the driver is longer. I bought a new one last year with the idea that I would carry/use that one from time to time and preserve my first SAK. But the driver is shorter for no apparent reason. I've read that it's because of the change in mag glass over the years, but I'm not sure about that. There's a pretty big gap between the two tools on that layer. The driver could be longer by at least 1/8" without any issue opening/closing the new style mag glass that I can see.
I have actually found the 58mm Combo Tool Phillips to be VASTLY more useful and versatile. It can do anything from #00 to #2 screws! I keep a Rambler in my pockets at all times. To be fair, most of the screws I encounter are in electronics and kids toys where #0 and #1 size screws are by far the most commonly used. You don't see many #2 screws in that arena, though they are used much more in construction and furniture.
The mag glass is great and I do use it from time to time when working on things like computer/networking equipment. But it's not something I need to keep in my pocket 100% of the time. Instead I keep my Explorer out on my desk so it's handy when I'm tinkering with stuff.
So... yeah. I think the Explorer is great! And I don't end up carrying it much. I'm much more likely to be carrying a Spartan/Tinker/Recruit along with a Rambler. The Deluxe Tinker is attractive with the pliers though!
My exact feelings also...
It's a good SAK for sure, it's also a "looker", i've carried it for a couple of months when i bought it.
But it always felt like carrying a bulky 4 layer SAK for the same benefit of a Climber really... I honestly think that the inline Phillips is highly overrated vs it's actual function and usability. It looks great, but is it really that much more usable than the can opener SD for example...? For real life sporadic use...?
I can get more SD variety and functionality with any other smaller SAK's (84 or 91mm) and a bit adapter with some bits than the inline phillips.
Also the Mag glass has very limited use for me, it's very small, and if i want to quickly enlarge something to see, i'll just grab my phone and take a pic of it..., much more useful to enlarge anything, IMO. Also the Mag glass is by far the most fragile part on any SAK.
So, even if i like the Explorer, i really don't actually carry it anymore. For 4 layers in an urban setting, i'd rather carry a Deluxe Tinker, much more real world functionality

Very interesting perspectives by awl. The in-line Phillips is definitely one tool that I miss when I’m carrying just a farmer. The screwdriver tip of the can opener really cannot compare to the full on Phillips for me.
This is because the Phillips driver can handle many different sizes of Phillips screws even smaller ones without slipping out IME it is much more robust as well. I find that the can opener screwdriver on my farmer has lost a bunch of metal in my many attempts at trying to use it as a Phillips. It has worn down and chipped pretty well from use on the tip, although the in-line Phillips on my 1980s explorer may be worn down a slight bit from use, it still works like a champ. No slippage.
It’s basically like having a screwdriver in my pocket I can’t really say the same thing for the screwdriver tip on the can opener. It’s just not even close.
The other tool that I miss when carrying the farmer is the mag glass. I’ve actually had to start carrying a jewelers loop around with me bic I miss it so much. Ha
The Explorer mag glass is great for looking at gold nuggets up close, a map, or text that is too small. I also like to open it at the top and put it down on the table to use it as a mini microscope. It makes a great fire starter and once even lit a cigar with it when my lighter failed. It’s funny how we all have such different perspectives because the two tools that are making me miss the explorer the most are the in-line Phillips and the mag :dunno:
I really wanna get some 91mm metal scales for one of my explorers… Alox Explorer :ahhh
I completely understand what you are saying, and your perspective, but it obviously depends on the use, frequency, and user.
I like the freedom of having the can opener for most incidental jobs, and using my bit adapter with the bottle opener, there for having as much inline SD's i want without having an extra thick layer dedicated just to one SD. However my usage is on a "in a pinch" needed situation, and not on recurrent or job retated situations, for that id carry an actual screwdriver, or dedicated toolset
I missed the bit adapter from your first post. How’s that set up? Is it a leatherman adapter?
That's a 3/8" drive (ratchet) to 1/4" bit adapter, correct?
No, just a regular hex bit adapter from one of my regular bits kit, it's square section fits bottle openers perfectly.

Lovely. Looks like you've got a Rovyvon?I do and it’s great.
