Title: Attn: Duct tape lovers,,
Post by: MadPlumbarian on February 17, 2017, 10:26:33 PM
I didn't know where to put this but who carries a duct tape keychain? Cut up a bic pen, wrap around it, then run some paracord through, or like I did and take a 2" cotterpin, run the tape in between, then wrap, gives you that little eye at the top. Only downer, over a few months the tape starts to slide, if you took a cotterpin and just wielded a washer at the end would make it perfect! Yet as I was looking around somehow this came up, it looks like the ultimate "fancy" duct tape keychain.. it's only suppose to hold 18" of gorilla tape, or 24" of the other tapes, but still, nice..

Cool! However I do not carry any on my person. However, every tool box, bag, tractor and vehicle I own has a roll of Duct tape in it.

Hah! I'm the duct tape wallet carrying guy so I stayed away from this thread. My key chain is heavy enough as it is. The only difference is instead of using tape wrapped around a card I have it wrapped around a magnifying card sleeve, then the entire thing is sleeved again to prevent the glue from being messy.

On each of my jackets, I carry a zipper pull consisting of a length of Gorilla tape wrapped around a section of a plastic pen barrel. A short paracord loop is threaded through the barrel and a drop of super glue prevents the bottom knot from coming loose.

I have tried carrying duct tape over the years but never needed it when I did   I do always have some close by me though ;) :D

Very cool trick with the cotter pin though :like:

Also like the zipper pull trick :tu:

That's the point, it's that just one time of carrying anything, whether I be tape or a knife that make it worth any price!

I was working once on a scissor lift and was up 20', I ended up cutting myself yet I couldn't bring the lift down, but was bleeding, so what do I do? I didn't have a fak, so crap,, I ripped my short shirt sleeve, covered the cut, then looked through the work bag and found electrical tape  or was it duct? Either, I wrapped it up and finished what needed to be done before I could bring the lift down..

I carry gorilla tape in my hike pack.  I also have gorilla and duct tape in my vehicle.   I have carried gorilla tape on a card in my Leatherman sheath but stopped.  I have it pretty close to not need it on my person.

Yeah I get that but with as much stuff as I tend to carry some things have to go  I only have so much pocket space :D Be great to have bottomless pocket pants though :o :dd: :D

I never saw the appeal or utility of after-market duct tape "solutions"

I generally have a roll *somewhere* and if for some reason I want to cut down on space I just hoik out the cardboard and flatten it a bit.

I've usually got a roll of nitto tape on me anyway, and honestly that does most of the "quick tapey" tasks.

my "ready reckoner" for this kind of gear is

"Do I need this because it's useful, or do I need this so people know what an interesting, handsome and well prepared kinda guy I am?"

Same here, waste of money to buy when I can make my own duct tape stash. I will admit though that I don't use my wallet duct tape a whole lot (but handy when I need to). I usually have stashes of tools and duct tape at home, cars, work, etc. My edc philosophy has been to  carry what I need to make do, until I get to someplace that will do the job better.

I agree, that little keychain is a little pricy. I mean if someone took a 2" cotterpin and wielded a small washer at the bottom would make it just as good if not better since it will be able to roll more then 18"..

Heck another little idea, who has those store keychain cards that they just don't need? If it's long enough wrap 2' or more around one of those? I know I have a imitation credit card wrapped with like 5+ft tossed somewhere..

I have been looking at using one of those cheap aluminium capsules from china but they are just a little bit too small to fit a thimble that would fit my finger well.

I keep a roll of duct tape in the Jeep, one in each tool bag and more lying around in random spots around the house.  I don't want to carry it on my keys as well, for the simple reason being that I can never find a roll when I need it, and I would hate to lose my keys because they are attached to the duct tape that Ii cannot find.   :ahhh

My keys go on a shelf the second I walk in the door.  If they don't then I will spend at least ten to fifteen minutes to find them.

Mine get put on a hook right next to the door. Back at our old house idk where I put them and even the wife got up and we searched for over 30min and couldn't find them, until after I had to call off work and the wife started to cook breakfast, I saw a little shine "in" the baseboard heater, come to find out we're guessing one of our ferrets from back in the day got ahold of them and hid them.. I'm guessing that's another good reason why you shouldn't have everything all on one, cause that was both vehicles, the house and locks and other junk!

This should also reduce all the annoying sights one is normally exposed to on a road, such as other vehicles...  :D

I have a few of the credit card flat rolls stashed in various strategic locations. I also keep a mini duct tape roll in my EDC bag, which is just tape rolled around a cut off section of wire coat hanger.

I simply take out most of the cardboard ring from my duct tape roll, then fold it together and put some old bike tube over it. The tube can be cut into rubber-bands (cut diagonally for longer bands).

That's what we used to do back at lowes with packing tape, worked great, especially didn't take up so much space in a vest!

My carry method is to wait until most of the roll of tape is gone, then smash it flat to carry just the length I think I'll need. I packed a different type of satchel the year before last when I chaperoned a youth group trip to New Orleans for a week. So, in addition to the normal "disaster" prep (para cord, first aid kit, "no roll" toilet paper, garbage bag...) there were convenience items (hair ties, ziplock baggies) and those items you never know what you'll do with them until the need arises...duct tape being one of those.

It didn't occur to me to remove some of the cardboard to make the roll more smashable, so thanks for the good idea.

Oh wow, I never posted to this.

2" binder post, with a small screw eye rather than the end screw. Put a little bit of thread locker on there, and tada! Sometimes I'd put a couple washers on it to keep it all neat, or cut washers out of clamshell plastic. Then I just started wrapping the tape on the clamshell plastic.

I also have a couple of colors of electricians tape and a roll of 1" wide black duck tape hanging off my bag. Use a zip tie or a bit of paracord for a loop, key biner, molle webbing, and you're set.
