Title: Lew's 30-Day Rebar Challenge
Post by: lew on January 19, 2018, 03:12:16 AM
As I said in another post, I have a Rebar and a SAK but mostly use the SAK out of habit.  Someone suggested a 30-day challenge so I thought, "why not?"  Today is Day 1.  I am an IT consultant and sometimes have to get my hands dirty installing computers and peripherals.  Today, I installed a printer for a customer.

Printer in the box (and the extra toner cartridge that I didn't open):

Opened with the Rebar.  Tried to use the can opener but it is too dull.

USB extension in a clamshell package.

Opened with the Rebar.

Sorry, no action shots.  I didn't want to ask my client to take pictures while I was charging him.

I have to admit I doubt I'll make it through 30 days, but so far it has kept my SAK out of my pocket.  If I do make it, you're in for some boring stuff!

I completed the Rebar challenge back in December. I thought it was a great challenge. Like you, I'm mostly a pocket knife guy and the challenge really got me to warm up to the Rebar. Stick with it! The whole point of the challenge is to get you out of your comfort zone and trying something a little different. I definitely had to adapt, but after a while, carrying the Rebar felt quite routine.

I'm in the middle of a Swiss Spirit challenge right now and....I confess....I sort of miss the Rebar and definitely miss a SAK in my pocket. Old habits are hard to change!

I would think that in your career field you might find the Bit Driver a huge asset with the Rebar:

(https://www.leatherman.com/dw/image/v2/AAMV_PRD/on/demandware.static/-/Sites-master/default/dwe072270b/large/126-removable-bit-driver.png?sw=1000&sh=1000&sm=fit)

Slips onto the Phillips driver and lets you use a myriad different bits. I got one during my challenge (Thanks, Poncho!) and love it.

Hang in there and don't worry if it gets a little dull at times, every challenge has those moments. We'll be pulling for you!  :tu:

Oh, yeah, I kept my awl/reamer sharp and used that to open boxes--that way I kept my main blade sharper for more serious tasks...like sharpening pencils.  :D

Great start to this challenge :tu: Good luck as well  The challenge doesn't have to be exciting just let us know how it does :salute: ;) As Nix has already said, the bit driver adapter is an awesome addition to the Rebar (and many other MTs) as well :like:

Good start, and enjoy it!   :salute:

Hey Lew,

I bought a Rebar with leather sheath back in the middle of September and have been belt carrying it near daily ever since. Prior to that, I'd been carrying a SURGE!!! all summer. I, too started out as a Swiss Army Knife guy, and still carry the Super Tinker I bought when I finished high school (30 years ago)

Because I also carry a Leatheman Micra on my keychain, I now rarely have a need for my Super Tinker at awl.

Also working in IT, I find that the can opener or awl are sufficient for cutting tape that seals most boxes. Sometimes I am lazy and use the little nubs on the plyer end of the unopened Rebar nd that works fine. I happen to have it on good authority that the serrated knife will cut your finger all the way to the bone and not draw blood until you look at what you've just done for a few seconds.

The blade and tool locks are a big plus. I think you could leave your SAK at home and do OK

Hard to beat a Rebar

Admittedly, though, I would love to get rid of those little lanyard ring and replace it with the box cutter from the Wingman. That thing cuts plastic packaging like butter.

Since the sheath are no longer fit to the tool the way they used to be, those older style lanyard loops that were outside the tool attached via the knurled screws would be fine.

The problem with cutting tape with the knife blade is it gets tape glue all over it.  I'll try the awl next time.

Here's Day 2:

Used the file to transfer some eggs into a pan of boiling water for poaching.

Cut open some packages from Amazon.

All day I'm asking myself, "Can I do that with the Rebar?"

All day I'm asking myself, "Can I do that with the Rebar?"

...And the answer is yes.

Right. I try to never use a knife blade on tape. Sometimes maybe the little knife of a SAK, or if I'm in  a hurry and have no scissors.

Except for scissors, I find the Rebar up for almost anything reasonable.

Mine does as I only sharpened it on the angle that was already there :salute: It will dull some after opening a can I am sure but since I never use it for that I don't have any experience of it dulling :D

Day 3: Went to the boat show and didn't use the Rebar all day.  Dinner in front of the TV and it dawned on me that the TV tray was wobbly.

Turned it over and discovered a loose screw.

Tightened it with the Rebar.

Day 4: Watching the playoff game and decided to open a beer.  Could have twisted it off or used my SAK, but this is a Rebar Challenge so I used its can/bottle opener.

Have to say I was disappointed.  The opener seems too small and I had a hard time getting it under the lip of the cap.  Anybody else have this problem?  My Supertool and all my SAKs do a great job.  I'll have to practice a lot in the second half and the next game.

Practice makes perfect.

(I don't recall a problem with the Rebar cap lifter, but with the Spirit cap lifter I usually end up making two 'lifts' to get the cap off. Not sure why. )

Yes, with twist-off caps there is often less gap to get under for leverage.
I have same trouble with SAK Vagabond’s cap lifter.

The can opener on the Rebar does work for opening cans.

Hope your team wins, have a beer for each score!!!

This is a failing common to every single Leatherman bottle opener I have ever handled. Victorinox bottle openers are far superior, as they catch the edge of the cap immediately. Leatherman has to be set on there just right, and you must lift with your elbow, as opposed to flicking your wrist.

Yay, Patriots!!

G.O.A.T.!!!!

Sorry. 7 + hours later and I'm still up from the game (I'm in New England)

Ah. I've not yet tried the Supertool one. Too bad we have to go find one of the biggest tools they make to find a serviceable bottle opener.

Meanwhile, my SAKs, no matter how many layers, work smoothly and with little to no thought needed.

Had to use the Rebar opened as it can't cut flush to a surface while closed.  Very comforable and stead using the knife this way.  The blade was a little short for the job, but it got it done.

Day 6: Staying away from my SAKs so I used the Rebar file as a nail file.

Batching it tonight so I decided on soup & sandwich.  Had to cut the tape on the lettuce.

After dinner, I had to put the lettuce away but it wouldn't fit in the bag whole.  Had to cut it in half.

Didn't take a picture of the perfectly halved lettuce head, but it did fit in the bag.

Nice work. I find the Rebar to be very useful. Used the Spirit wood file to file one of my nails today. Not an ideal tool for the job, but sure trims a broken nail in a hurry.  :tu:

I'm getting used to it not being the ideal tool for the job but working just the same.  It's the second time I cut something twice as wide as the blade, but this time I didn't think twice.  I ordered a Work Champ because once in a while I want a longer blade, but the short one is working just fine.

I find that carrying the Rebar in a pocket is easier than I might have expected.

I like the diverse tasks you are using the Rebar to accomplish. And it's amazing how many tasks suddenly seem to have a multitool solution. Of course, when all I have is a hammer, everything starts to look like a nail.....

Carry the Champ, use the Rebar!  :tu:

Easy fix, leave the tool open as the closed “other half” interferes with the bottle.

Good luck with your challenge!

The Rebar's blade is no slouch when it comes to cutting anything.  In all honesty, it's probably the most used part of the tool for me.

Enjoy following your experiences and commentary.

I too, am a Rebar user, have 3.   Actually started with a ST300 and was told of its smaller model.
I like the tools and package size, often rides right back pocket opposite of wallet.

Scissor duty is covered by SAK original style Vagabond. ;)

Thanks.  My Rebar rides in a Raine Horizontal Knife Sheath that seems made for it.  I don't even know it's there.  I have an original SuperTool, and while it's a little lighter than the ST300, it's still considerably bigger and heavier than the Rebar.

The Rebar’s blade does slice hardy clam shell plastic like butter.
Always worry I will slip, remove a side of finger, create a gap between belly button and a nipple, gash my leg.  So, I took Pedro’s advise and sharpened the can opener and use that as package opener.  Works well for me since I am left handed, feel like better control.
Just took a few strokes with Wave’s diamond file.

Depends on day and what I am doing or where I am working due to blade restrictions.

I have a Rebar box sheath that is used for the most part.  Also, a cheap nylon sheath that I belt wear for work that can carry my Rebar or my Wave, and it gets scratched up plenty as I work on concrete.

At home, I often carry in back right Jean pocket, as it balances my back side with wallet in left.  Then it is either without sheath or in  a flat LM nylon sheath.

I'm going to request a halfway-done review for tomorrow.

I found that the Rebar really began to grow on me after two weeks use. I'm normally a pocket-knife (read SAK) kinda guy, and I had my doubts about using just a multitool for a month. But after two weeks, the Rebar started to fill that pocket knife role....and more.

So, now that you are halfway finished the challenge, what are you impressions?

Day 16: Dinner tonight includes steamed vegetables.  The knob on the timer broke a long time ago and I usually use a kitchen knife to turn it, but I haven't used the Rebar all day.

You can't see it, but in the 3rd picture, the "on" light is on.

My impressions at the halfway point:

I'm getting used to the Rebar.  The other day, I needed some pliers and reflexively reached for it; first time I didn't have to think about using it.  As far as the tools go, I have mixed feelings.  I love the blades, can opener, all the screwdrivers, the awl, and the pliers.  Haven't tried the saw, but I tested the file and the hole for your thumbnail gets in the way.  Other than that, it works great, but I think it would have been better if there was just a notch.  Don't like the bottle opener; I have to force myself not to reach for a SAK.  All in all, it's a great tool and perfect when paired with a SAK.

Day 18: First, a story to explain the pics.  I went to a funeral Friday.  I was wearing slacks and a sport coat and didn't want to belt carry anything or have bulges in my slacks, so I left my Rebar and Workchamp in the car and carried my old Climber.  It occurred to me that the way I carry (Rebar in a horizontal pouch, SAK on a homemade belt clip) works fine with jeans but not with slacks.  I ordered a P-7 pocket clip for the SAK thinking it would be less conspicuous.  Then today, I was throwing out some old picture hangers and remembered a Youtube video.  I decided to make a homemade pocket clip.  Here's the story in pictures.

The Rebar with before and after picture hangers.  The top one has been shaped with the pliers.

The finished product.

Pocket clip in action.

Much less noticeable than the homemade belt clip.

It works great!  Hard to imagine the $12.00 P-7 working better, but it has already been shipped.  I'll probably use it when it comes but it was fun making this one with the Rebar.

Day 21: My son had borrowed my tools and the socket set was a little rough.  Decided to take out the sockets and clean everything but the ones close to the edge have to be pried out.  I always used my Mountaineer but this is a Rebar Challenge.

I really like the P-7, but not $12 more than my homemade clip.  Too late now.

You can basically get the same clip from an online place for less than $1 each.

Day 30: Opened a box and cut the top off so the contents would be easy to access (no pics).  Cooking burgers tonight so I thought I would get the onions ready early.

Only one slice as I'm the only one who puts onions on my burgers.

My opinion of the Rebar after 30 days?  I like the size/weight and the way it fits perfectly in the belt sheath I got for it; I don't notice it a bit, and when I take it out, it feels like it was made for my hands.  Having all the tools inside the handle made it a little awkward at first to deploy them, but after 30 days, I prefer this design, and I can get them out as fast as my SAKs.  I love the pliers, cutters, blade, screwdrivers, and can opener.  I like that all the tools lock.  I prefer the Rebar screwdrivers to the SAKs because the unpolished finish seems to get a better grip.  As for the can opener, it's great for cans but not so great for bottles.  It works, but you have to work at it.  I don't like the thumb hole in the file.  One of the tests I did was file the head of a nail with the Rebar, Mountaineer, and Workchamp.  The file works great, but the nail head kept falling into the thumb hole; not a great design.  As I said, I love the blade but wish is was a little bigger.  I didn't use the saw or the sheepsfoot blade but I'm sure they work fine.

Conclusion: This thing has earned a place on my belt.  I know it's not the glamor boy in the Leatherman line, but I prefer the old school design of the Rebar and ST 300.  I'm going to carry it and my Workchamp for a while and see if they are a good fit.  As I said in another thread, I should have gotten the Outrider as the file, pliers, and #2 Phillips on the Workchamp are redundant if I am going to carry both.  If I didn't "need" a larger blade, a small Phillips, scissors, tweezers, and a toothpick, the Rebar would be the only tool I would carry.

I'm glad I took the Challenge.  I was programmed to reach for my SAK when I needed tool.  For example, need to tighten a Phillips head screw?  Get the SAK and use the can opener.  Now, I'm comfortable with the Rebar options.  Need to measure a metric screw?  Get out the Rebar.  Pliers?  Rebar.  I would recommend the Rebar to anyone who is looking for a great multitool and isn't dazzled by one hand opening blades on the outside.

Great report to the adaptation to your Rebar.

I know you had reservations has you felt you were always going reach for your SAK first, and afraid the Rebar would be the stepchild in your selection  for carry.  So glad you accepted the challenge and saw it to completio

I had taken a ST300 challenge first when learned there was a smaller version.  Now have 3 Rebars to choose from.  Add my 58mm Vagabond, scissors are there, or with my Micra.

Great job completed!

The Rebar IMO is a very underrated MT.  You cannot beat the price and its size vs the tool set and build quality on it!

Now if they just made a pocket clip for it like the Kick had, it would be great!
