Title: Opinel question about #8 blade
Post by: FolderBeholder on May 07, 2019, 04:40:35 AM
I wondered if anyone knows why my Opinel #8 has a standard handle, but it has the gardener blade?  The knife on the bottom.

Cool find FB! :like: :tu: :tu:

It was assembled at 5 minutes before quitting time and someone was in a hurry to get done.

I would say you should definitely hold on to it. I have never seen another one like it.

I  :like: that blade shape just a little more over the regular one anyways  it's a keeper but I have no idea how it came to be either :ahhh :D

I didn't actually notice until I was wondering why the blade was protruding so much, I thought I didn't push it in...then I realized it was the gardener blade.

I like the blade shape too.  :tu:

I like it a lot better than the weird frame the Gardener typically has, and of course the spear over the typical Sodbuster type blade most Opinels have. Guessing a spear point Gardener blade somehow found its way into the box for standard 8 blades.

The gardeners always have the INOX blades as far as I've ever seen so this one is a bit of a mystery  :dunno:

I'm glad it did, I really like it.

I can't figure it out either except as folks have mentioned, a rogue blade, but then that doesn't explain the INOX mystery.

You could try contacting Opinel and send them a picture and see if they can tell you what's up.

Worth a try.  I'll report back if I get any information.  :tu:

**Edit, I just sent an information request through their website.

Can't wait to hear the response :salute: :like:

Looking back at the pics, it may just be a model that is discontinued

That is quite possible.   Here's to hoping we find out soon.

When I bought it (top right), I didn't even notice the blade shape.  It wasn't until I noticed it didn't close as much as my other Opinels.

Agreed.  They did get back with me.  It was a little difficult because I am writing to someone in France and we had a little difficult time with language.  But ultimately the response is (and I quote),
"This n°08 knife existed but now it doesn’t.
It’s a carbon steel blade."

It is good to know it was once offered and is genuine and not a switched out blade.

I bought the bundle below for $27 shipped.  I didn't notice the blade shape in the photo.  I was just thinking, wow, 2 Opinel and a Wenger for $22 plus $5 shipping...good deal!  :tu:

That's absolutely beautiful Lisa!  Next to SAKs, Opinel is my favorite knife.  In some ways, even more so.  Like wine, they actually get better with age.

I understand.  If I wasn't into SAKs, I'd probably heavily collect Opinel or Spyderco.

I was told from the person I bought it from it is 1909 or earlier.

That's even more incredible.  The company wasn't even 20 years old yet.  A true pre war!

It is and I love it.  I think maybe the person is looking at the photo of my other Opinel, the one with Garden blade.  I would think that is from the 70s.
I'll keep trying, but I do believe this one is older than that.

Plus the Opinel site said the lock was invented in 1955...so this one has to be pre-1955
