Kent pattern axe mod

It’s a good job I don’t have any really rough old axes lying around

My dad has one of those. He's hammerited it and uses it as a garden ornament ::)

Ahh the joys of wood working :D

Its an unusual pattern, it looks like it would deliver most of the shock of impact right to the top of the haft?  It must be hard on wedges???

It’s not wedged yet Mate, got to thin it down some (it might still turn into a pile of splinters :))

Thanks Guys  :salute:

Looks Cool !  What did you use to cut it out ?

I tried to use a hole saw to begin with for the bottom curve, hole saws are great but it wouldn't touch the steel so I drilled a row of holes then used a 4" disc cutter, then again with the disc cutter for the top curve  :tu:

Tony, have you thought about taking commissions for modified axe heads? :pok:

:D
Title: Re: Kent pattern axe mod
Post by: Sparky415 on April 07, 2015, 08:56:41 AM
They would probably be too expensive,
All those broken and burnt drill bits (and there were a lot  ::) )*, discs and belts don’t grow on trees

*It was quite interesting drilling from the eye to the bit feeling the steel getting harder  :)

That's really nice looking axe. I like it.

You could cut that end of the handle off, and make new pommel maybe out of some darker wood...

As you can see I couldn’t drill the last holes on the right as the steel was too hard  :ahhh

Hacked it about a bit with a disc cutter, splashing a load of water about to keep the steel cool

Good result considering you used a death wheel  :ahhh

They scare the poop out of me!

I nearly cut my nose off with a cut off wheel:

I was cutting aluminum window channel when the dang thing shattered, and kicked back hitting me in the face.  Hurt like hell too.  I was wearing eye protection, but not a full face shield.  Yes, there was a lot of blood, and fatty bits dripping off.  I was home with my daughter (about age 7 at the time).  I drove the old Land Rover holding a towel to my nose, and told her when to move the shifter while we went to the hospital.

It was a Saturday and the plastic surgeon came in grumbling something to the effect of, "Every time someone has a cut on their face, they just HAVE to call me in, why don't they just sew the damn thing up!" when he looked up and saw my nose.  He stopped, stared and said, "I'm not sure I can fix that in the ER..."

Luckily for me, my family is "blessed" with an abundance of nose tissue.  He sewed the entire left half of my nose back onto my face (it was a free flap).  Hurt like hell.  Seriously.  Not too much of a scar either.  :D

Edit to add: There's probably a fair amount of my DNA left on that broken disc.

I've been using the first one I finished to make the handle for the big one, (slowly)
it works really well as a woodworking tool, I've been chopping, shaping and shaving wood with it  :tu:

Added, And you were right about the head, I had to add a metal wedge  :)

Yeah it did look like it out a lot of torque through the top of the axe :)

I bet it was good at woodworking duties as you can really choke up on it :tu:

I found a place selling copper rivets for leather work
Thought I would try them out on this sheath

(http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n184/sparky_415/2015/DSC04027.jpg) (http://s112.photobucket.com/user/sparky_415/media/2015/DSC04027.jpg.html)

I went for the 4mm (biggest they sell  ::) ) think I will order some smaller ones next time

A little Christmas story for you Guy's  :D

I visit my Mate Kev and as always we go out to his garage so he can smoke and we can B/S without worrying about our language  ;)
He's got his axe hanging on a nail so I ask him if he's had time to play with it yet?  :pok:
No but he say's he had another mate visit, a young Chippy (carpenter) who say's 'Oh look an axe'  :o  takes it down off the wall
Kev said 'A mate made it for him, it's sharp!'
So the Chippy does what all Chippy's do with their hammers and starts flipping it by the handle and catching it (I also do this with my hammer)
Kev repeats 'It is sharp!'
Chippy just smiles and keeps on flipping it  :2tu:
Kev turns his back and is looking for something in his tool box
He hears   'umm Kev'
Kev said he caught the wrong end and cut three fingers  :ahhh

I said I hope he didn't bleed on the floor
Kev said no he's a good lad, he kept hold of it and didn't drop the axe on the concrete floor  :tu:

Thought I would tell you Guys as this really made me laugh  :-[ >:D

So I saw all your hard, patient, skillful work, and I thought to myself "Well, I've got an hour, a hacksaw, and an axe, let's see what this looks like when done with an absolute lack of respect for craftsmanship or the tools...."

and here's the result :P

A bit more filing to go I think, to hide the crimes of the impatient and poorly planned cutting....

(So no one feels bad, this is the best this axe could have hoped for - it was rusty, chipped (still is) and the handle had split - the cost of repair, sharpening, new handle and wedges was > cost of replacement axe, so I charged the owner $0 for disposal of the axe they were about to throw in the bin...)

At some point, when it's a bit more "finished" and this whole lockdown laws thing is over, I'll swing it at some timber and see if I've completely smurf up the mass and shape of the thing to the point that it is useless...

Since I'm not selling it or anything and it's just for me, I imagine the "finished" product will still be pretty rough.

And I really just took a punt with the the cutting, so I might find it's not even usable, and then it just becomes an exercise in learning what not to do :P

Well, I've got it as good as I can probably be bothered getting (this one), and I'm keen to apply the lessons learned to another one  ::) (Got an old no-name hatchet laying around...)

On weighing the waste - I've just about halved the weight of the axe head, and though I have not had the opportunity to take any full swings, I used it to make some stakes and it work fine...admittedly, so would of almost anything else.

I am a little concerned with the area where I cut straight for the handle...there's what could be a bit of a stress point, but I'm not sure I can be bothered removing the handle to radius it. I guess I'll regret that when a crack forms....

I'm thinking for the next one I might take a lesson from your hard work and actually draw out and predrill the pattern, rather than just laying into it and hoping for the best  8)

My best suggestions would be to make a paper template of the axe then draw around pots an pans until you find what looks right
Cut it out and draw around it on to the axe
This way when your marks get rubbed off of the axe it's easy to re apply them
I now think that drilling holes might be a waste of time, it is probably easier just to cut it out with a hacksaw or a grinder  :tu:
