Title: The practical Tool-Set (plier + Vic knife)
Post by: duder on October 27, 2011, 04:16:31 PM
Hi,

a few days ago I found an older Victorinox Set. It`s called "The practical Tool-Set".
I have already asked Vic and they say it was made between 1997 and 2001. About 19.800 pieces were made. The plier was bought in and not made by Victorinox.
The most interesting part is the knife. It`s the same model that stressmaster5000 showed in this thread:

http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,32150.0.html (http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,32150.0.html)

I had not seen this set before but maybe one of you have.
I guess the knife was also sold individually, I saw one in a shop in Spain this summer.

Heh, now that's a funky one; I've not seen that before.  Was it only for the European market, or was it also released Stateside?

I don`t know, I had asked where it was sold but they did not answer this question. I thought it might have been made for the american market because the title is in english.  ???

Very unusual, seriously odd handles but cool package and pouch, like the knife too :tu:

Interesting, the plier handles remind me of Felco [garden shears] handles

That was my first thought as well.  Wonder if that serves any practical purpose other than making it fit around the knife better.

Cool set, though!  8)

What a fantastic find. Clears up the mystery of the Master Craftsman Jr - it was a factory knife and not a custom run for someone. It is still quite an odd design IMO.

I like it, that's a great set!

Now that I see the setup it was sold in it makes perfect sense.  :salute: 2 tools that complement each other very well.  :tu: The pliers do look strange but they also look like they would work just fine and it allows space for the knife to fit in between the handles while in the pouch.

[suspicious]So what does this do?[/suspicious]

Oh... If that had places for a flashlight and a ferro rod on the sheath, that would be very nice, but the funky handle angle might be a deal breaker.

This is the ''missing link'' between the traditionnal SAK and the Swisstool  ;)

Sorry, missed this one last month.

What's the quality of the pliers like? Is there any branding on them?

The quality of the pliers is ok, not excellent but ok. The same goes for the sheath. There is no branding on the pliers. I only know that the pliers are not made by Victorinox, but I don`t know where it was made.

Shame it doesn't hint at where they were made.  I've not seen any like it before so can't even guess.

How funny is this. I just bought this same NIB kit off of eBay. Doing some research on it, and the first link is this thread off of Google. Somehow I missed this thread...go figure.

Serves me right to try and look for exterior info, when MT.O is so info rich.

The seller stated that this kit was only sold in Europe in the 90s.

I just bought another item from that seller (compass & SAK). He has some nice items.

that was kinda my thinking as well, an early Vic answer to the upstart Leatherman. ;)

Neat!...Kinda of a spin on the Linesman's Pliers Sheaths I used to see and wish I had kept when I was in the service...Lots of folks would ditch the TL 29 and slip an SAK in the pouch

I just got this in today.

I was able to split the packaging apart without doing any damage to it. I got lucky I guess. Anyhow, this is a rather interesting set.

The sheath is a bit ingenious. The front opens via a Velcro flap. The knife has its own separate pocket.

This means you can access each without taking both out at the same time.

That is pretty neat. The sheathe setup reminds me of the military issue TL-29 knife/lineman's pliers from WW2.

The tool selection on the SAK is almost identical to my very first mod - remove scissors from Vic Ranger, just has a phillips driver instead of the corkscrew. I really like that tool selection and mine usually rides alongside an LM Crunch.

Love that sheath !

Wonder if it allows to to carry a SAK and an (open) MT at the same time

From that Irish seller I presume?

I doubt it. Handle geometry would be all wrong on the multi-tool to carry a SAK there.

Because of what I learned in this thread...I think a suitable storage place for the Practical Tool-Set is with the other Victorinox Multi-tools.

Very cool tool from a collectors point of view in my opinion, its easier to carry a swisstool or swisstool spirit.
