Title: Visit From A Puriri Moth.
Post by: zoidberg on February 03, 2015, 09:28:19 AM
A couple weeks ago I was up in the North Island of New Zealand staying with some mates at their place out in the bush.
After a good nights drinking we were about to turn in for the night when into the house flew a very special moth.

My kids have this book they have liked reading before bed for many years now called Pepetuna, which in Maori means eel bait.
It is the story of a caterpillar that spends five years in a Puriri tree before becoming a moth for just one night.

So there it was, the Ghost moth or Aenetus virescens. There was no mistaking it. My first ever Puriri moth, how awesome.
It flapped across the window then landed on my hand. I grabbed my camera and a headlamp and headed outside to the hill.
Even being smashed I managed to get a couple pics. It stayed on my hand for approx ten minutes. And then it was gone.

Pretty good for being drunk (actually, I'd be very happy with them if I was sober). :D
