Title: MP400 Owners Club
Post by: magentus on May 24, 2017, 02:32:29 PM
Can't seriously believe that there isn't already one of these on the go, but I can't find one so.........

As a relatively new Gerber owner, I am completely smitten with the MP400. Ok, so Kev spoiled me rotten with a BO model, (and I have a SS 600 on the way from the magnificant Toolslinger), but even a non-BO 400 would have knocked my socks off.

'Beautifully industrial' as The Peacant put it - everything on this baby screams 'Use me'. I love that you can mod it pretty easily and the icing on the cake is the one handed flicky opening.  :ahhh I've put my Spirit away for now and am considering gifting it to my daughter sometime soon.

Celebrate with me MP400 owners - what do you love about yours?

Just what the flip is going on fella's? No pics, no tools, no MP400 Owners Club thread? Which parallel universe have I stumbled into this time? Next thing you'll be telling me that Mo and Harley aren't happily married and celebrating their 4th baby on the way.

Can't say I'm surprised. I'm sorry though Mo, if it helps, I don't think you'll be on the market for too long - you're the whole package.

Good luck with the child support too.  :salute:

Love the MP400! It's a great urban carry especially when you swap out the knife for a file and go bladeless. Kinda surprised Gerber doesn't sell a bladeless version like the MP600. I read Magentus' recent post on the Spirit vs the MP400 and found myself really interested in the Spirit...so much so I got my GF one to replace her old SOG. Mine is coming soon :)  But even though those two MTs are similar in size, the Gerber still feels beefier. I like that the tools inside the MP400 are the same ones from the full size MP600. Most "compact" versions of MT's feature "compact" tools . This is a hard use tool made with smaller pliers and a slimmer tool selection: live with less but put it to hard use. Also I really like Gerber pliers, they deploy quickly and have great geometry with a comfortable grip. Here's a pic of my MP425 bladeless, it's made up of a cheap MP400 tool I found in great shape on eBay and some spare parts from a MP600. I've also got a standard MP400 which I got new a while back for weekend carry.

Been a busy day Nate - had my new manager with me going through paperwork in a tiny, boiling hot, airless office. AAAAAARRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHHH. Was calling on Cthulhu and Arioch under my breath to help me out the whole time, but to no avail. No blood for the blood gods today then, if that's how they want to play it!

She wasn't even interested in my MP400 or Swisschamp! I mean, c'mon lady!

The MP400 never had a woodsaw. You'd need to nick one from a Diesel or Strata, and you'd have to lose the scissors  :ahhh

I have the BG Strata, which served me well but is now surplus. I can't decide whether to sell it, or sacrifice it for parts for my MP600

This is probably old news for some of you, but I was just looking at the MP400 (corkscrew) I picked up a while back and noticed the pliers head is slimmer, especially at the tip. Is this common in older examples or something specific to the corkscrew model?

The lighting isn't favorable in here, so these might not be super helpful.
It didn't come through well in the photo, but the casting is slightly different all over. The BO one is a standard MP400;

The MP426 never needs this adjustment. Probably needs a bit of Loctite or similar.

Neil (the Beeman, former mod here) used to swear by nail varnish as a semi-permanant thread locker.

Forgot to post the triumphant pics of my '400 with metal file, scissors aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand............. Woodsaw! Thanks Mechanickal - you're the dude!  :salute:

The woodsaw fits in beautifully - it replaces the can opener in my set up and the plieres flick in and out without obstruction.

Once I was happy with the set up I borrowed some nail varnish (vegan apparently) to firm the threads up. That was several days ago and it's holding up well.

I wasn't keen on the nylon sheath so the '400 sits sweetly in a leather Spirit sheath on my belt.

So awesome to see that saw in it's second life at the other side of the channel!
Really glad I could help.
Did you cut down a tree yet?

And for everyone who's interested: mags sent me 2 sets of SAK scales in return.
1 regular red set and 1 set of black plus scales. The plus scales ended up on my CT29, which was in desperate need of a new coat and looks absolutely stunning now! :dd:

It was a suspension indeed.
My first multitool ever but died on me after 1 drop from waist high.
I repaired it but a second waist high drop killed it completely.
Getting it repaired under waranty would cost me +€12 in postage costs while an unused one would set me back  €15 on the second hand market.

I combined it with a Chinese multi to make for 1 useable tool but it remained unused, so I'm glad mags had a good use for it. :2tu:

Nah, I carry a Swisstool X during work now.
If I drop it I'll just need to call the company's insurance to fix that hole in the floor.

My MTO education has taught me to not walk away from a deal.
Found a deal on this MP400, 2nd Gerber tool, first was a Diesel.

This little guy is so cute,

I have used the MP400 and I will admit I have a habit of flicking the plier head out of the handles as easy as snapping my fingers.
I do like the pliers, not the combo blade or the Phillips tip.

It is a tad longer than another tool and does not fit my EDC Ozark sheath that handles my other tools.

Yet this fella will find a place in my select kits or rotation.

Now I am compelled to look for a BO MP400 or 450 for my special op assignments;)

I just received the MP 400 still warm from Lynn's $10.00 challenge. Other than having been sharpened quite a bit, and needing to be sharpened again, it's in remarkable shape.  It's amazing that she was able to find it for only $10.00.

It is my first 400 Mags, but not my first Gerber MP as I have an early Mr. Pinchy.  The pliers don't slide out as easily as I've been used to. Once the pliers are out the handles are quite floppy. Is it normal for the 400 to be so loose? It weighs quite a bit less than Mr. Pinchy and doesn't feel nearly as solid. I do like the pliers, and the Fiskars scissors are really nice. I'm looking forward to carrying it for a while when the 111mm challenge is over.

One of the great things about the 400 and 600 is the tolerances  - they are loose, but it means they don't get gritty or clogged. And don't worry - it is solid  :D The pliers will loosen in time and flicking will never seem so possible

Here's the 400 that the wonderful Spartan19 sent me - now completely UK legal for EDC anywhere!

File and saw are from a Diesel (donated by the magnificant Kev Davey  :salute:

The file needed a chamfer at the end to fit in the 400 frame and both tools will need a slight fettle to loosen them up. The jaws close nicely and are still flickable  :tu:  :D

I am starting to see/feel why they are so many Gerber supporters. IMHO, I think the ergonomic of using the pliers are far superior on the MP series as compared to other manufacturers. If pliers are important to you, go Gerber!

Nice! I have a Crunch sheath that fits well, and a shorter one that I have cut an opening in for the ends of the pliers to sit in. This will do until I try your 'rail extension' project. I may need a 3rd 400 to experiment so I don't ruin either of my favourite ever MT's  :D

It was probably from a Champ - I got it in a trade with T14.

The E-Blade was from a beat up Alox Electrician DTT sent me - I put it in a Farmer to start with in place of the main blade but it works much better this way - very useful blade and I wish it was a more common in SAK's (like the 93mm in-line awl).

I see there’s no liner between the saw and metal saw, are there any washers or anything in between?
And what did you do to get the sheepsfoot in there?
I like it. :dd:

Thanks Donald. The saw and file can sit together without a spacer or washer.  The e-blade is packed out with a very thin washer and sits against the opener with just a bit of touching.   :tu:

I've been contemplating taking apart my Franken600 to put the file into my BO MP400. I don't get that much use out of the blade, really. But then I'd be annoyed by that one being incomplete. Maybe it's time to hunt down another abused one for parts.

This is weird for me, have had this MP400 for several months and primarily use the pliers.
Today needed a knife, and had a issue deploying the blade.

Is my unit assembled wrong?(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180518/37e988b8da032c1b85d45248a4908855.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180518/167cda4a41fba08192a1648e33b8de01.jpg)
The blade’s nail notch is on the inside and I must open the Phillips and the screw driver to access.

That's been an issue since I don't know when. Mine is exactly the same. I usually just pinch the blade and pull it out, so it's not really a problem for me. Still, it would be nice if Gerber stopped being lazy and put the damn nail nick on the other side

Thank you for the info!
I checked the net and examined a few pictures finding many as mine and a few with a thru cut out notch (sport), that does not cause an issue.

I may get the dremmel  tool  and try cutting my own notch.  My big digits just cannot get a grip on the blade.

Fortunately my Rebar was in my bag and able to make the switch.

I bought this 450(well...it was a 400 w/ broken scissors and I swapped in a file) a while back for $5. It had initials scratched into it THREE TIMES. It has been driving me nutty.
It needs some more work, but the initials are gone. :)

they had some crazy clearance deals a few weeks ago, but it wasn't in every store, only 1 of 5 near me had the clearance items so its probably too late to go looking for it. I've always liked this model but I had to sell my 400 a few years ago, glad to get it back even if its slightly different with the file instead of scissors

I would prefer the file over the scissors. Knife can probably substitute the scissor to a certain extent. Though I would hope that they make it a stock bladeless with the scissors and file in place of the blade!!

I'm still a huge fan of my knifeless MP400 mod, and it gets a lot of carry time. Just found a new love for my knifeless MP600 mod too, but it doesn't sit as well in the pocket due to being that bit bulkier and heavier. Both are fantastic tools though.

Very nice MPs, AW! Another thing Gerber could do to possibly add some awesomeness to the 400, is to offer a blunt nose version that retracts completely into the handles. I modded one in that way and it is nearly pocket-perfect. :)

Yeah Gman was right.  I got too grinder happy.. was actually trying out something but didnt quite get it right. So the extra fine tip was a correction on the failed idea. I am the only one using it so I am very mindful of the capability. Light duty and saved my arse a few times when I needed a ultra flat needle pliers.

Not sure whether this is a model 425 or a 475 or a 425/75/4?? one, firiki is going to call this one Maggas (μάγκας, don't expect everything served on a plate, look it up!) as the name seems fitting.

Maggas is a great mod because the knife blade originally found on it is a) facing the wrong side of the handle, b) of the awful, combo edge variety, c) probably quite bad (although, to know for this for sure, firiki would have to use said knife blade first  )

By removing this knife blade, you get a very useful toolset that's also legal to carry around (in most countries, at least so I assume?)

Title: Re: MP400 Owners Club
Post by: firiki on February 22, 2019, 12:33:20 PM
All in all, I wasn't expecting to like this MP400 model so much. It is fairly lightweight and being compact enough it makes a good candidate for pocket carry (firiki carries a sheath on his belt practically never).

The plastic lock tabs feel quite sturdy and provide a useful, additional cushion to grip and squeeze on. The locks should continue to work well even if the tabs were partially damaged.

I didn't feel any hotspots hurting my palm. :tu: It is possible to pinch one's palm between the handles but not easily.

Overall, the tool feels solid enough for it's size. I wouldn't want to turn size 17 bolts with the pliers or turn M10 screws with the drivers but I doubt they ever were within the tool's scopes anyway.

I'll report back once I've formed a better opinion.

Again, thank you very much, magentus  :multi:

I'm pretty sure that's what's holding the U-boat together as well, apart from magentus.

This means they can hardly ever surface to replenish air supplies and this, in turn, would explain many things

MP-400 with sheat!
Finally I have another Gerber who opens with one hand to call mine.
(My old, loved and trusted Flik was stolen a couple of months ago after years of devoted service. And Gerbers aren't easy to find in my country)
Needing some care, a lot of oil, a little job to remove rust spots and dirt...

Recently I bought a MP400 brand new and I am very happy with this unit.  Small enough not to weigh down my pockets, but robust enough to handle light duty to potentially medium duty tasks.  Being a tool that can be relatively easy to open with one hand is very helpful  in  my opinion.  In my opinion, is the best multi tool design and the only other design rivaling this is Sog's PowerLock's design.

While this would have been great to have a slot in the knife instead of a nail nick, I also much prefer the sheep foot design over the standard drop knife as well.  If there is to be a trade off with the second variation, I'd call this an improvement.  420 high carbon steel is certainly an improvement over a standard utility knife blade, so I am fine with this steel.   Similar to the MP600, you can use the Phllips driver as as a 1/4" bit driver if you have the bit adapter.  For delicate packages and letters, I have found the bottle opener to work fairly decently as well.

What I appreciate about Gerber is that while some of the components of this tool are imported (Taiwan, India based on the packaging), this tool was assembled in Portland Organ with the knife and perhaps other components as well. While I am not going to use the sheath, not surprisingly this was made in China, but  there is a large market for sheaths out there.  While I own several multi tools; I have to say this is easily one of my favorites for every day carry.

Yeah I gave the sheath to a someone else, but I figured I wouldn't be keeping the sheath anyway.  Now the sheath that came with my Center Drive Plus is definitely a keeper and one of my favorites. Proudly stamped made in USA and there is even room for 1/4 inch screwdriver bits, so that is a positive.

Agreed, the Gerber 30-001603 and also the USA made Gerber 30-001222 are my favorite sheaths from them.   Granted I do keep my Fiskars MP600 in a American Bench Craft sheath.  This company uses thick rivets instead of stitching.  Truly proud to also support a veteran owned family run company.  Always a plus to be able to help the wonderful men and women that have served.

Quick question before I order my first MP400 and join this club: Is it possible to mod the saw holder from the MP600 into the 400‘s frame, and have the holder + attached saw fold into the handle? Or is there not enough space in the handle?

I'm doing an eyeball side-by-side and I'm sorry to say I don't think it'll work.  Almost certain it's a 1/4" too long for a start.  Also I'm pretty sure the thickness of the holder means that the blade wouldn't be held near enough the side of the handle to give the head room to slide.  So the holder itself should drop in OK but you couldn't store a saw blade in it.

Saw from a Diesel might be a better fit.  :)

Not sure if I should get one now. Without the saw holder it is only half the fun.

In fact as far as I can remember all the other tools are identical.

You can always try ... if the blade does not fit, you can carry it in the sheath or your wallet, you may turn it back to OE state or, add a Diesel saw.

N+1, remember? :multi:

I thought about that too, and I could even make a leather sheath for the tool, that has a small insert for the saw blades.

The whole idea was to basically have the bladeless MP600 in a smaller package. In order to achieve that, I would have to get like 2 MP’s: A 400 for the file and a 600 for the saw holder and the scissors. Then combine it into one. I might do that if I can find cheap donors. Maybe ones with damaged tools that I don’t need

That's a good idea there... a Compact Bladeless! An MP600 file will work fine in an MP400, and I think that the 400 already has scissors so, it will be a matter of replacing the combo blade and deciding what to sacrifice between the flat drivers and can opener.

I'd not have bothered with the lanyard ring if it wasn't the same thickness as a washer TBH.  I don't use it but it doesn't take any real space either.

This was a tool selection I put together myself.  It was a few years ago now so I might have stolen the lanyard ring from somewhere else.

Could be from a LM Blast but I would be lying if I said for sure.

Over the last couple weeks i received the donors for the bladeless MP400 project, and today I finally got around to do it. Here is the result:

The saw holder would fit with blade attached, but only in two spots. The MP400 has only two slots for the longer tools. Even though there are technically four, only two of them are wide enough to accommodate the long tools. Even the blade is too thick to fit on the other side, the pliers won’t slide in nicely anymore.

So with that in mind, i could only fit two of three tools i wanted in: File, Scissors and Saw Holder. Because of that i decided not to place the saw holder in one of those two slots, but on the opposite side. It is no longer possible to have the saw blade inside the tool when closed, but since there is plenty of space in the sheath it is not a big deal for me.

I also removed the bottle opener, because i don’t need it.

After a 10 minute dunk in soapy water in the ultrasonic cleaner, and REM Oil, it turned out really good. The tool was speckled with white paint, and that came off easily. An MP400 T3 is a good find.

Sir, to the best of my knowledge, the only difference is that it has the "T3" logo laser etched on its side BUT, been available mostly black oxide (but not limited, as there is also a "T3" 700) as promo to the Terminator movie, it is quite unusual, and even more so as Chako's  is silver. Lets hope someone more knowledgeable chimes in soon!

The silver is caused by the lighting when I took the photo...it is black oxide. This is my second MP400 T3, and I also have the T3 700.

I haven't seen Bill for ages, he may still be in the US - we had a couple of postcards asking for care packages of salty porridge and his damp and mouldy comfort blanket. We miss him, he has a lovely singing voice and knows all the most ribald undersea shanties

Hi Mechy.

I had the same problem here. Maybe once a year a MP400 pop on local market.
Gerber have zero representation here. (Leatherman have, but costs a kidney and a lung. A wave costs five Vic Explorers...)

Have patience and one eventualy will apear at good price.

Grogu is a smart guy! He knows (or sense through the Force) that a MP-400 will do well in the Sands of Tatooine as it wold do in the mud of Dagobah.

Found this one at a local store, couldn't pass it up  :D It's a BO, hard to see in the pic.

I am very happy to report that the plier jaws and cutters are aligned perfectly and there are no issues with any tool implement.  :tu:

Very nice used tools, mags!  :like:

I removed the blade, always have a SAK on me anyway. Also removed the bottle opener. Swapped them for the saw holder of the MP600, added a file and turned the large screwdriver into a scraper/package opener. Will take a picture later  :salute:

I love it. Always have an assortment of different saw blades to go with it. Wood, metal and the carbide one being the bare minimum  :D

Juan made a really nice blade that fits the exchanger, not sure though if that would be UK legal  :dunno:

Wow! I had no idea there was a site dedicated to just the MP400, although for such an awesome tool I shouldn't be surprised.  I have had mine for over 15 years, and it has been great, but i finally pushed it just a little too hard and snapped t he blade.

So I went on line to see if i can find a replacement blade and i ended up on this site.  I didn't find any links for replacements, but i see a lot of you guys replacing knife blades with saw blades.  Anyone here willing to part with one of them to help out an MP400 believer?

I have bought other multitools as gifts, and a couple of the larger 600s, but i really prefer the smaller MP400.  I may just have to buy a new one, or maybe a used one, although i have no idea why anyone would part with one.  I was really surprised that Gerber doesn't sell replacement parts and apparently neither does anyone else.

Great pictures hevy; liking a lot your organizers!

Magentus, could it work in your case adding a pocket clip from a mech pencil, or from a pen?
Also, how 'bout an elastic band with a "pocket", where you would put the adapter in and then place the band around the tool?
Or a small magnet in your sheath and attach the adapter to it?

  :dunno:

Title: Re: MP400 Owners Club

My two cents.
The 400 is awesome, mags and a bunch of other peeps around here will back that up.
That said I would go the 600 blunt nose every time.
I don't have a 400 here anymore to really double check but recall the handles wedging slightly when flick deploying.
The 600 doesn't do that.
If you aren't looking at blunt nose then I would also suggest the center drive.
So wish they made a blunt nose center drive.

Barry Barry Barry, you know the answer already.......

MTO law states you must get both.

But if you can only have one, then I can't recommend the 400 enough  :pok: Been using mine daily at work for a few years now with no complaints.

I'll second what you said about a blunt nose Center Drive Zoidberg.  I've had a Center Drive for a few years and they're tough tools.  I'm going to pick them both up.  Right now Gerber seems low on both, but I'm hoping things improve shortly.  I'll post them when I get them!

Carrying the newest iteration of my modded MP400. I rounded all corners to make it more suitable for pocket carry, and less for pocket destroying. Also shortened the tip and reprofiled it to be more blunt nose. The BO was scratched in several spots, so i stripped some of it to make it more uniform.

Hello!  I have a used and broken bladed MP400 arriving tomorrow or Tuesday.
I purchased it since I'd like to use it in a modding project.

I think I would like to put a file in there, but would need one that is semi-direct fit.  I think Magentus did this mod on his.
It was stated earlier in this thread that the file came from a Suspension.

Which exact Suspension model do I need to buy?

Thank you in advance.
Here is the broken MP400 in route.

Here are the newest members of my Gerber ("mostly MP's") collection; the silvery one came in today, and this is how it looks after cleaning, light sharpening (as it still has the factory grind marks!), and lubing.

Nice ones Juan!  :hatsoff:

Gerber sent a replacement MP400 for the broken bladed one I have.
I noticed the new one has a different logo and the blade no longer has the see-through nail nick.

Although I have the Gerber tool ordered, I couldn't wait, so with the help of a Vice Grip the Leatherman Crunch, I have the broken blade out and the file from an MP600 in the MP400!
I will need the Gerber tool to tighten the fittings though as it is hard to get a good grip on them.

In the meantime, have you perhaps tried snap ring pliers? Something like this
[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]
Or, if you or someone near you are crafty, cobble up something like I did from a 10mm flat bit drive

Did you ordered the long wrench; would you mind posting a review of it once it arrives and you use it? TIA.

Too bad it did not worked ( as of personal experience, 'cause I'm really impatient) but, glad the spanner will be in tomorrow! (And happy 'modding, as I find the MP series the easiest, most fun to work/mod chassis fdom any multitool!)

The 4-lobe tools arrived today from eBay, the ones Vicman pointed out.
I have to say that they worked perfectly!  It's hard to believe that those 4 little nubs on that tool are so effective.
Not sure how long the tool will last, but for a first attempt it was flawless.

Gerber MP400 discontinued? On the gerbergears website, the multitool disappeared from the store.

Sadly, that is the case; I inquired about it an this is the answer they sent:
"Hello,

Thank you for reaching out. Yes, the MP400 Sport was discontinued late 2023.

Warm Regards,

Is this a temporary shutdown of the line for retooling or is it a permanent discontinuation of the model? I can't imagine why they would stop making such a great tool.  It packs (packed) a lot of usefulness in a small package.

Agreed 100%. When I got my first 400, I was in awe for having a compact version of the 600 (my true favorite from Gerber; in any flavor, but DET as that's not my area of expertise and a pretty specific tool for that), including its full sized tools. But when Ilooked for a replacement sheath, I looked through the catalog and saw nothing; when I asked, they fulfilled the sheath replacement but got the news of it being d/c'd.

:) i suppose it could be a blade swap. But, it doesn’t ever appear to be used so more likely a factory install IMO.
