Title: Minimalist challenge...
Post by: dkop1 on August 07, 2018, 03:27:17 PM
Waiter went in my pocket before work today .....
If you can't fix it at 3 am with a SAK and electrical tape, are you even a technician?

Here goes 30 days of consecutive pics. Hopefully I'll be off of night shift before this is over

I did 10 years of night shift so I know how you feel!  This challenge was amongst my favorites.  Have fun!

I did grave shifts and night shifts for so long as well.  Good luck with the challenge.

A month with the combo tool. :ahhh

You can still swap to a small tinker you know. :pok:

dkop, may I join you in these 30 days? I've been meaning to have a minimalist month for a while now, and challenges are more fun when one's not doing it alone.

Also, someone in the know should clarify if one can switch between SAK's fitting the description during the challenge or should it strictly be one particular model all the way?

I didn't think the challenge required the same minimalist SAK for the whole month, does it? I have a cadet and tinker I was hoping to mix in.

I don't mind at all! I think you're required to start your own thread though for most every challenge

Yeah, you can swap - as long as it's no more than two layers.

It's a little easier to manage if you have separate threads but makes little difference.  If you want to both use this one that's fine.

If we're allowed to jump in on this thread, I'll join too.  Looks like its a go!

I'm minimalist everyday, but haven't actually done the legwork for the badge (even though I think I may have started the first minimalist challenge (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,54888.0.html))

Thanks for the clarification!
I don't mind anyone else hopping on my thread if the mods don't mind.

I've been on a kick for the smaller tools lately so I should enjoy this greatly. I have an alox sd classic coming shortly so that's definitely going to get some keychain time

Day 2.... National Night Out down at the township building. Good turnout despite the torrential downpour and some stuck apparatus in the mud (those in the Northeast US and other places will understand the pain of oversaturated soil lately)
Tinker in black came with didn't see much use unfortunately. Afterwards a dark beer and a dark knife... Fitting combo

Ha... Best sentence yet....  :salute:
Good luck with the challenge.

I've been on 84mm 2 layer Sak's strictly for like 2 years or more now. Don't really "need" anything else for normal EDC. All my 91's have been sitting in the drawer for most of the time, except for a ocasional climber or huntsman when heading to the country.

My bear paw hands pretty much need 91mm or larger to feel comfortable. Though I love that little waiter and how it fits in the pocket, it is too small for my hands to do any "aggressive" cutting work. my usual is a 91mm tinker i put translucent green plus scales on, but i seem to be unable to locate it..... So the black handled one is filling it's place until I find my beloved. Or give up and just buy another set of plus scales to swap onto this one. All the tools are still tight, just some evidence of oxidation on the aluminum plates.

My today´s carry -- minimalism, Ron Who style. The Waiter, the Director, and the BuSchroder all satisfy the criteria for a minimalist challenge, but then I could carry only one at a time.

Day 2

Today it was the DofE's turn, basically the same as the Golfer, just with Phillips on the back instead of the corkscrew. I used it one time, to snip a loose thread from my t-shirt. Always good to have scissors, thta's why these are my two favorites, and why I don't really carry other 1 or 2 layer SAK's, although for the sake of the challenge, I'll try other ones as well at some points.

Day 3, new keychain knife came from eBay (alox classic) so I figured I'd take it for a spin as my blade today. Also a "nature adventure" 2015 classic came with it, but that one's getting filed away in the collection as it's in pristine condition. So is the Alox, but I've been wanting one for ages.

Day 3:

An apple a day keeps me using my knife for fun things :)

I have noticed that the old Elinox pioneer does not slice quite as nicely as my newer ones. I think it's a combination of the thicker blade stock and the rougher, less polished finish. Still a great knife.

Day 3

I spent the day home, I haven't been out, so I couldn't say I carried something per se, but I only used one SAK today, my Sentinel, and you can't go much more minimalist than that. (You can, but really not by much. :) ) Some slicing and dicing for a light salad. The Sentinel is great for kitchen stuff, I use it in that role quite frequently.

This is a great challenge, and a fun one too.

Somehow the Pioneer doesn't feel entirely 'minimalist' to me. That is one heck of a knife. But, the rules is the rules, so good luck to awl!  :tu: :tu: :tu:

Yeah, the pioneer is a capable knife for sure.  :tu:  One could even argue it's the best Swiss army knife ever made   (Not that I'd be so bold ;))

For the first minimalist challenge (pre badge days) I used a bantam and I used to edc a cadet for a couple years, so I don't feel like I need to prove to myself I can do it. I'm used to living in the minimal carry world.

My aim this time (besides satisfying the badge requirements) is to have fun taking random pics of my favorite knife

Starting to miss my scale tools, as much as I love this little alox classic. Think I'm going to stick out the weekend with it before bumping back to an 84mm with cellidor scales. Next weekend I have a camping trip/public education event with the SAR crew and I'll be needing a bit more blade anyway.

Btw, getting a bit envious of your red beauty

It is a stream light stylus, but it's actually AAAA. It goes in my shirt pocket at work because it's genuinely pen sized. However the batteries are tough to find and work provides them, so when I'm off the clock I tend to carry a AAA Streamlight and use some rechargeable cells. It fits nicely in my front pocket if I clip it.

They DO make a microstream model that is 1x AAA, I don't have one, but it may fit your needs!

That's interesting, I didn't realize they were AAAA. I bet that does make it easier to carry. I guess the trade off is harder to find batteries.

The nice thing with streamlight is they have replaceable rubber caps for the pushbuttons. Every two years or so I wear the cap out as it is exposed when clipped to my pocket and rubs things.

Feeling this minimalist challenge is going well, I'm thinking of trying the 58,65,74mm challenge later this year. Or the discontinued challenge :D I have an executive and two Wenger sportsman models coming soon....

Absolutely agree! Also, the same configuration, but with the normal blade - so essentially the Compact with Phillips instead of the corkscrew - could be a very strong seller in general.

Do you think they use the rounded blade on this because.... Well... England? And their ridiculous view of knives as death machines?

I'm quite a fan of the corkscrew on the compact that holds the eyeglass screwdriver, as I seldom find the back-mounted Phillips useful except for tightening  cabinet and drawer knobs

Hmmm, not exactly. The Duke of Edinburgh Award is for youth between 14 and 20, and as far as I know the recipients get this SAK among other things, so this is a model made for teens (kids) as well (just like the "My first..."), but I'm sure someone from the UK could explain it much better and in-depth.

Aha! I had looked briefly into the award, but did not realize that it was aimed towards younger people. I think I had my first pointy knife at 8 years old, that I got from selling popcorn as a cub scout. I suppose it's a bit different across the pond though. Still a really neat tool! If I ever get into modding, maybe I'll hack together my own.....

I meant that the designers likely didn't intend for the can opener to be used as a staple removal tool.  :tu:

Yeah, you're right, I'm sure they could have.

I didn't really explain my thinking very well. Basically, I was thinking about how those folks probably designed a tool with certain uses in mind, and would likely be surprised to see how it is being applied to solve problems in different ways ~70 years later.  The can opener may not be a good example, but the "+ PAT" stamp is what made me think about it today.  Maybe the corkscrew or hook would be better examples of odd, creative uses beyond the original design intent.

Day 7

I thought I'll mix it up a bit this week, so I'm going to rotate through my other minimalist SAK's, today it was the Waiter. I used it to open an envelope. I must say, somehow my SAK's are seriously underutilised in this challenge so far. Anyway, this might be a blessing in disguise, as some of them would not be able to handle tasks that other, beefier models could. ...or would they? Maybe I'll learn something during these 30 days. :)

It seems like a common theme amongst SAKaholics is surprise at just how much they can handle.  I realize the 93mm alox line is built a bit more sturdy, but if there is something my pioneer can't handle, I really should be going for a fixed blade or dedicated tool.

I say use 'em hard and see what they're made of!  ;)

Regardless of the intent all those year ago, the opener on a Soldier/SI/Pioneer is the best tool for staple removing.  Even when I'm at home near my big tool chest, that's the tool I reach for.  And leather gloves!  Sooner or later the opener will slip on one of the staples and I'll skin a knuckle if I'm not wearing gloves.

So all... thoughts please. Heading to an emergency services social/public education campout this weekend. I do not have to cook. I'm looking to take a 2 layer 84/91mm with me as my  blade for the weekend to continue my minimalist challenge. I'll be doing communications and radio demos so it's not super critical that I have a saw. Any suggestions? I'm curious to see the responses so I'll happily take any and all responses, without regard to whether or not I own that model. I'm presently leaning towards the wenger highlander I just received in the mail.

Day 8: Made some soup today with the black tinker. An hour or two later I located my beloved green plus scaled tinker! Whilst packing for the previously mentioned camping trip (left it in my bag...) So for now, the black handled backup tinker gets cleaned, oiled, and put back in storage for another day!

For (camp) cooking the bigger the blade the better, so for that - in theory - I'd choose a 111 mm model, and keeping in mind the layer count it would be the Nomad (blade, proper openers, corkscew, awl).

Of course you said you will not be cooking and you'll want to take an 84/91 mm SAK, so I guess my pick would be the Tinker with proper openers, large blade, small blade, Phillips and awl. The Highlander is a nice knife, but having a smaller main blade as the only blade is a slight disadvantage. (Of course the Spartan is always an option, but the Phillips might be more useful in your situation than a corkscrew.)

The Compact/DofE are always excellent options when we're talking about minimalistic SAK's, but again, you'd only have one blade and a bit of a compromise in the form of the combo tool (still a very good tool in my eyes) but a pair of scissors is always a plus.

All in all, as you already have a Tinker (or two, now that you found the second one) and a Highlander, you can't really go wrong with either, but I'd give the edge to the Tinker simply because of its blade size and blade count.

I'm probably partial to the highlander because it is a new toy  :D :D
good suggestions, thank you! I'm quite curious to see the discussion that will be sparked. Thus me leaving it open to models I do not own!
My only 111mm model is a german army trekker, which is phenomenal BUT a layer too thick for the challenge. I may have to consider a nomad or adventurer model down the line if I see one pop up affordably!

Agreed! My pioneer's can opener has opened far more staples than cans

I agree, something like the Nomad or Centurion would be a good choice.  Also may want to look at the HUnter XS for a blade only option.

I also would like the discontinued 93mm woodsman for a two layer outdoor knife.  Very

Today I picked the Sportsman. It has no scissors, but package opening was a breeze with the blade too. Lovely little knife, I love the toolset, I prefer the nail file (small 2D Phillips driver!) instead of the small blade, only the lack of scissors is keeping it from being carried regularly.

Day 9:

This is actually from Monday. Sam's club had a playhouse on sale so I bought it and put it together for my two oldest girls.

The pioneer helped open the packages and tighten a few Phillips screws. Most assembly was accomplished with a power drill and swearing, though ;)

If you have small kids and are in the US, my local Sam's had this set marked down from $400 to $150. Not worth $400 but well worth the $150. May be worth a look

Although I am not officially participating in this challenge, I have been using a 74mm Executive as my EDC for months now and am participating in the Chuck Yeager Challenge II (honoring Chuck's EDC, the Executive).

I think the Executive exemplifies the minimalist value of big function in a small package!

The Executive is a very intriguing tool.  Initially, I ignored it while pursuing other SAKs.  Eventually, I decided that I needed a closer look and became a fan.  It has some of the key tools that I depend upon (blade, scissor & tweezers) plus one that is very useful in opening plastic blister packaging (Orange Peeler).  Excellent functionality that comes in such a small form factor!

Day 10:

Switched back to ol'Blackie.

After spending several days with the old cross pioneer and now switching back, I can definitely tell a difference between the two when cutting up an apple. The last newer one is definitely better at slicing, whereas the older model starts to wedge the pieces apart halfway through. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I think it's a combination of the slightly thicker blade stock and less polished finish on the older knife.

Day 10

"Spartan Thursday" in this minimalist rotation week. I fancied some baked beans, so the can opener saw some use.

Although - and  perhaps this won't be so popular - I don't really like the Spartan, and I don't really like Vic's can opener. For me the Spartan is just a big pile of redundancy, two knife blades and two openers - you can get more/better functionality in the same or even smaller form - the Compact/DofE adds scissors while the combo tool can do what the two openers can, the Sportsman gives you the nailfile in place of the small blade, and that can even be used as a 2D Phillips for small screws and it's also smaller, the same is true for the Wenger Commander, and on top of that it has a better can opener. That leads me to my other point: while I know how to you use both types of openers properly, and the Vic opener does a clean, smooth job, for me the hawkbill style opener feels more natural and smoother and it can also be used to make holes, open blister pack or as a scraper.

If I owned one, I could! I'm really taking a fancy to the 84mm lineup, which is unfortunate timing seeing how much of the line has been cut and the availability of cheap used models is dwindling  :-\
The Wenger 85mm line seems to still be present on the second hand market though, and I've been gearing myself towards them.

As for me, day 13, home from camp and trying to soothe the mosquito bites while drying out all my gear from the rain and my accidental slide into the creek during a water rescue demonstration..... Wenger commander opening the last peach Coke I've got. (My sportsman nearly fell from my pocket on the rocks but it remains in my possession!)

Sounds like a weekend full of good stories

OH, and you definitely need a pioneer!  :pok: :D

Day 14

Went back to my Golfer today. I kept one of the baked beans cans from the other day for some testing - I used the combo tool for can opening previously and remembered that it worked good, but I wanted to try it again after the recent use of the traditional Vic opener from last week, kind of back-to-back testing, and voila, it really works great. The lack of sharpened edge is no problem at all, small cuts in clockwise direction go pretty smoothly. For those that have some aversion towards the combo tool, worry not, it opens cans very efficiently.

Tried modding an old explorer into a Passenger today... not only did I put my opener layer in backwards, so now the nail nicks are facing the wrong way... but I pushed my finger tip down onto the sharp edge of a pin and turned it into a bloody mess
Modding is fun they said...
Once I get some replacement pin stock I'll tear it apart again and make it right. I'm not ready to foray into Alox modding quite yet

Nice pics everyone!

Day 20:

Removed the bail from the old pioneer to try it that way again. I keep going back and forth on whether I like it with the bail. I like that the knife is "complete," but with just the bail, it's more of a pain to make sure I don't close the blade on it. When I add a lanyard, it looks cool and makes it easier to keep the bail out of the way, but it's more bulky in pocket. Also has a tendency to snag other things and pull them out along with it.

Without, it looks nice and clean, and no snagging or blade gouging issues, but it's got those dang holes in the pins just begging for a bail.

Yes, I know, I over think and over complicate small things ;)

Depends on what state ya live in. In mine, the state owns and operates the stores, and they have set hours that don't accommodate night shift, haha. Though now slowly other stores are being allowed to sell beer and wine here... But it's growing very slowly, and their selection is usually quite limited. Liquor is still only sold in state owned stores.

Switched to the DofE today and seems "I fell off the wagon", went back to old habits: package opening again. At least something nice this time, my first 108 mm Vic, a Bundeswehr knife. (And with two layers, it's a minimalist SAK, I mean GAK!) In the evening I also cut up some bacon - a safety blade 91 mm SAK is really not the best tool for that, but that's the challenge part of the challenge, isn't it? And it did the job alright anyway.

Day 26

Didn't grab pics of opening the expired MRE we're splitting for dinner... Breakfast? Whatever meal we're on now. Heavy flooding and roadway damage all around the southern end of the valley so we're staffing the EOC coordinating for a hell of a crew of first responders and community volunteers. It's going to be a long weekend. Anyway I'm carrying the sportsman still.

Wow, hope everything is OK. Stay safe!
By some miracle every resident is accounted for so far. My relief radio operator rolled in a bit ago so it's nap time! Figured I'd catch up on my social media/texts etc. before I do.

All the best to everyone affected!
many thanks! We've all gone home now, it's just up to the state and township to start repairs and begin making things normal again

Now you know I like that black pioneer of yours, and its one of the reasons I will be getting one. But your coffee cup totally caught my eye yelling at me! Is it a dinosaur skeleton?  :like:

Boston Stoker is a Dayton Ohio area coffee chain. Started in the 70s (I think) as a cigar bar type place.

This particular blend is their custom house organic blend. It's pretty smooth. It's a good one to start the day with  :tu:

You should definitely pick one up, especially now while it seems to be a standard color.

And yep, that's a tricerotops skeleton :tu:

I'm from Ohio! Still have a lot of family in the Cleveland-ish area. If I ever make my way to Dayton I may have to grab a cup....

Day 27

I've been sitting at the computer working most of the day, I haven't used a SAK per se, but in my breaks I did sand and polish the badly scratched up blade of my recently acquired 108 mm GAK. As it's a 2 layer knife, it fits the challenge criteria.

And now for something completely different... Package opening. A Lansky Turnbox arrived tried it on the Golfer, made it even sharper. Good little kit.

Had to look that one up.  It seems a lot like the spyderco sharpener, but less expensive.

How do you like it?

Yeah, basically a budget Spyderco Sharpmaker (which costs a small fortune here), or at least the same concept in a slightly different package. I like it very much so far. I just needed a couple of minutes to get the hang of it, I mean my hand and wrist had to get used to holding the blade right, but after that it's a breeze! Sharpens blades hair popping sharp. I'm very satisfied with this purchase and I can highly recommend it.

That's sounds like what I'm after.  Currently, I don't really have a way to sharpen serrated blades, so I was looking at the sharpmaker, but it is pricey.

I'll have to check this out.

Day 30:

Final day of the challenge  :woohoo:

As I looked at the various knives I had carried as part of this challenge over the last 30 days (1st pic), trying to decide which one should get the honor of carry for the last day, I realized it had to be my trusty black pioneer. Plus a little go juice to get this day started ;)

Thanks to dkop1 for kicking off this challenge and allowing me to participate!

Day 30...
Folks, it's been a pleasure. Certainly much more enjoyable to do it together! It made my first challenge a good one, and I'll be sure to do more in the future. (Thinking the <=74mm challenge next spring.... After holiday party/wine opening season  :D )

As mentioned before, for my last day, I'm toting the Golfer I just acquired, as I've been admiring Exeter's the whole time.
I've adored your Pioneer too Gustophersmob, but I didn't find a sweet deal on one during the challenge. I'll be sure to let you know when I do

Day 30

Well, great minds think alike: I had the exact same idea for the final day as you, gustophersmob, with the group shot and also I chose my black Pioneer too, in my case as the fanciest one to close the challenge. Below are the the SAK's that appeared in the past 30 days (Waiter, Sportsman, Wenger Comander, Spartan, DofE, Golfer, grey Pioneer, black Pioneer, 108 mm GAK and the OHO serrated Sentinel).

As gustophersmob already said, thanks dkop1 for letting me/us join in!  BTW, congrats on the Golfer, I'm sure you'll love it just as I love mine! My favorite part is the plain backspring, makes the knife look way classier than a Compact.
