Title: My trip to the most active volcano
Post by: edap617 on July 21, 2008, 04:36:18 PM
My trip the the Province of Albay to see the most active volcano in the Philippines, Mount Mayon. Its peak is 8,000 ft. above sea level at it has the most perpect cone. A town, Cagsawa was buried in an eruption in 1814 and other major eruptions occurred in 1947, 1984, and 1993. It has erupted several times since its last major eruption.

The 1814 eruption devastated the surrounding communities. This is what remained of the Cagsawa church, whose bellfry has remained standing as a mute testimony of the enormous disaster caused by flowing lava. Some 1,200 people sought sanctuary in the church, thinking that they would be saved from the fury of Mayon volcano. All of them died. One could imagine that, in their last moment, they struggled to climb to this bellfry as others below tried to pull them down. It must be a tragic, horrifying experience.

Going up more than halfway to the crater of the active volcano. The peak is 8,000 feet and we were up to 5,000 feet.

From up the volcano, we viewed the lowlands.

Yes, those are really nice items. I didn't buy any much as I wanted to because I have to take an airplance in going home. I didn't want to risk getting into trouble at the airport.

Those big knives standing against the wall are called "Itak" by the locals.

Actually there are 3 volcanos in that region and they are all part of the "Pacific Ring of Fire". The other volcano is just several kilometers away and visible from Mount Mayon. Here are some pics taken at a different angle.
It was getting cloudy and almost dark when I took these 2 pics.

Gene, if Mount Mayon, Mount Isarog and Mount Malinaw will erupt at the same time the whole Bicol region will be erased from the map. Let's pray it will not happen.

Our return trip to Manila by bus was 10 hours, stopping only once to take our lunch. Had to stay overnight in Manila since our return flight was scheduled at 9:30 A.M. the following day.

We stayed at the 33rd floor on a condo in Eastwood City commercial complex. Here's some pics of the city at night from the 33rd floor.

Enjoying our last night before calling it a day. The place is just a block away.

Homeward bound!

Have to wake up early to have early breakfast and to catch up our early flight back home. Last snapshot of the Manila before going down from the 33rd floor.

There's a place inside offering buffet breakfast at a very reasonable price.

It's Monday morning and we have to take an alternate route in going to the airport to evade the heavy traffic. Ah, there's a short cut route throught the former army headquarters. It's now privatized and now another business center.

I have to keep clicking my camera while taking our shortcut route through the Global City.
