Title: SOG PowerCut - 1 of 3 VERY RARE
Post by: Tigershark on May 16, 2021, 07:33:30 AM
A special post exclusively for MTO Members. This is a SOG PowerCut that never took off due to quality problems. Specifically, the jaws were known to crack under extreme duress, which made the PowerCut a liability for SOG's lifetime warranty.  Hence, the PowerCut was never sold, yet it was advertised in few catalogs. This PowerCut was supposed to be trashed by SOG, but a couple of them made their way outside the back door by a SOG employee luckily. Manufacturer's information: A completely new approach on multi-tools for the industrial trade or do-it-yourselfer, the PowerCut features a cutting plier for easy work in Short jaws and beveled cutting edges permit close cutting of wire… and we do it with compound leverage! Three wire strippers (10, 12, 14 gauge) are provided in the jaws. A stout compound leverage plier/crimper is located between the handles as well. Also built into the PowerCut is the new multi-size wire stripper component for stripping smaller sized wire. The job site will never be the same again!

One of our Admins asked Spencer himself and got the detailed explanation.

The Powercut was a very interesting tool, it is a pity SOG didn't persist and make it with forged cutters so it didn't break.

It seems that SOG didn't learn their lesson.  When they made the BlackTip MT with replaceable cutters for West Marine they didn't design the jaws with enough metal, so guess what happened when used hard ?  That's right, they broke.  Unfortunately for SOG they didn't find this out until after the tools were on sale.  They immediately started a recall, but weren't able to retrieve all the tools (over the years I managed to buy 3, but they were very difficult to locate).  These days you almost never see them, whereas the replacement BlackTip without replaceable cutters are slightly easier to find.
