Title: Man on the Moon LE
Post by: Reinier on July 06, 2019, 05:34:03 PM
So... Anyone has any pics? Any info? Size? Tool config? Scales? Packaging?

Victorinox just posted a teaser video on FB but the SAK they used in the animation looked like a plain Spartan.

Black tools Tinker, just hope it has 3D printed scales

I'm honestly surprised they didn't use the Japanese market Master Craftsman.  I'll take the Tinker though... I wonder how painful the price will be?

I confess I'm uninspired by this.  I wish they had brought back the Apollo astronaut inlay.

Thanks. Apparently there were more pics and vids posted in some of the FB groups.
Looks like the knife has an image of the lunar module on the back. Nice!

I'm a huge Space Race fan, so this is definitely on my wish list (providing the price clears thru my approving authority ).

I've got one on order from the Swiss Knife Shop. They are lovely knives (Astronaut space suit scales) with "Earth rise" on reverse.. Hope it arrives this week sometime.  The Tinker is my EDC, so I'm happy with the Moon landing Tinker. Also I'm an Apollo 11 collector, so this is great. Here is their link ;

Although quite cool, I think that's a different knife isn't it?  That one looks like Swiss Knife Shop's own commemorative SAK to celebrate the same occasion.

I don't know of any others (don't do FB). I'm quite happy with Swissknifeshop's version. Beside, I really dislike black bladed knives of any kind.

I  received my Man on the Moon Tinker from the Swiss Knife Shop yesterday. A standard Tinker with the scales as linked to above. Very nicely done colored scales. I'm very pleased with it; of course I'm an Apollo 11 collector. I do wish they had included something about it being the 50th anniversary of  the moon landing. I guess my string tag will have to do for that. Overall a nice piece -glad I got it.

I do not have a Tinker in the collection(have no idea why), so $28 seemed like a great price on one with those awesome scales. :)

That's about £105 UK, probably plus costs & tax - maybe £150?

No space pugs? :pok:
J/K of course.

I'm not a big classic guy either, but having a pug makes the space pugs sentimental(well. more memory inducing I guess) in a way. My last one who was with me for 15.5 years was a fawn pug who looked like the one in scale art.

Space cat sounds cool too.  :like:

Limited to 1969 pieces and all sold out already, i get the email, click the link and the website is down and by the time the site is back up they are sold out,  they must have been popular, congrats to all that managed to get one

The second the countdown was over it looked like a million people had hit refresh on their page. Site was down intermittently for more than 3 hours. Impossible to go through the steps to pay for the knife.
Their IT guys must've been thanking the marketing department for creating this situation on a Saturday night.
Title: Re: Man on the Moon LE

:iagree:

And even though the knife does look good and the price is ok-ish for a SE, I feel as if they could have done much more for this release.

A Black Ice Master Craftsman with these scales would have sold out in the same time for 4x the price me thinks.

I agree.  The Tinker?  I would have thought the Japanese market Master Craftsman would have been the one, since it has the NASA connection.  Either way, a beautiful knife and congratulations to everyone that got one!

Well... I got 3... But I can say the same about a few family members who are not very much into SAKs :D

I must say I don't understand why they put a 3 per person limit for 1969 pieces when they put a 1 per person limit for 6000 pieces...

I watched the timer time out, and then the site crashing. Was curious about this model and maybe ordering one or two.

Don’t mean to speak ill of Victorinox but this knife is nothing really special. Why a tinker? I think they should have done something with the Master Craftsman/Astronaut tool configuration and an inlaid Apollo Lunar Module, something like that.

What they produced now with the printed scales looks cheap.

Definitely not worthy of all the fuzz with the countdown clock revealing if you ask me  :dunno:

By the way I would be surprised if the site crashed because of massive ordering of this knife. 2000 people ordering a knife should not crash a big website like victorinox.com and I don’t expect millions of people were looking at it, the market for special edition SAKs is not that big I think. When I woke up this morning they were not yet sold out, I could still place them in the virtual shopping basket. I just couldn’t bring myself to ordering one..

Don’t let my negative opinion ruin your fun! I simply had other expectations about this SAK  :)

Glennfiddich1983,

Which SAK are you talking about?
This one?
https://www.swissarmy.com/us/en/Products/Swiss-Army-Knives/Medium-Pocket-Knives/Tinker-Man-on-the-Moon-Special-Edition-2019/p/1.4603.3PL19

The Swiss Knife Shop version was good enough for me at $28(or whatever it was). But, that said, I am definitely not a serious Vic collector and probably wouldn't feel right if I had one, since there are so many dedicated Vic collectors who put their awl into the hobby.

Their server failed to update quantities so they sold way more than were available. Logistics are still trying to sort this mess out... They probably love their IT at the moment... And their IT must love the marketing department.

I should have some but not as many as was planned... Still better than none though!

Did you order the Swiss Knife Shop exclusive version as well?

The SKS version looks more like a "Man on the Moon" graphic than Vic's. Though Vic's is still very nice looking.

The way they handled this is absolutely horrendous. They are on limited staff also because they're officially on holiday.

Imagine, they had 50 years of time to design a nice "Space/Apollo Program/Apollo 11 Commemorative" knife! But time was too short. I think Victorinox missed a big opportunity.

I just called Victorinox customer support and the lady told me that my order is shipping and that she didn't know anything about orders getting cancelled in the US that were placed yesterday.
I had also ordered one for a friend and she(CS rep) said it is also shipping today.

Thanks my friend

Slightly off topic, but related. Has anyone gotten the UPSP Moon stamps or envelopes yet?  I tried to order off the USPS website and it was a nightmare. You have to set up an account with USPS (a long process) and then set up a separate VISApay account (a real nightmare that would not work. I finally backtracted and cancelled out my order. I'll never even think about buying anything off the USPS site again.

I called my local PO today and the stamps and envelopes aren't available locally yet :-(

The SKS is striking. I think it is a little bit better graphic for the scales than the official Vic version. But, that said, having the official Vic version makes the SKS feel more legit. :D

Very cool you got one to carry! :like:

My money has been slim lately, so I didn't split for a user. Hope the graphics hold up for you! It is definitely a beautiful piece. :climber:

The Vic scale graphics feel tougher than the SKS version scales. In fact, I wouldn't even keep the SKS version in the box, because the scale finish feels a tiny bit "tacky" to the touch, so I am leaving it out for a few weeks on a piece of paper(and flipping it over periodically). :ahhh

Thanks for your thoughts on the SKS  :tu:...your pictures make me think the same. And thanks for the tip on the finish...I'd do the same if I get one.

I did splurge on the user since I was curious about the PS and I think I'd have regretted only getting a shelf copy when a user PS Spartan cost almost as much.  I've carried the clear-coated type print (not even sure of the process name, but different from the older non-clear printing)...they seem to hold up pretty well and tolerate a bit of polishing. I have bought used knives for parts where the coating was chipped and failing...seems almost/about as thick as automotive clear.

Normally you can expect those prices after a couple of years. This time it’s happening really quick. Some peope really wanted it and missed it due to the issues with the Victorinox website.

But apart from those website issues Victorinox is also to blame for these insane quick price raise, allowing 3 of these to be ordered per person. I think that’s just an inapprehensible and unfair decision to collectors  :dunno:

As I said before, those scalpers are scumbags.

But, that said, nobody should ever let their obsession lead them to pay 4X+ for a knife the same week it was officially sold. That just keeps scalpers doing what they do.

I noticed some tiny silver spots on the liners on my user copy when I unboxed it. Seems like there are a few more now, and I have to question the durability there. Rest of the knife has been fine with light use and pocket carry.  Still lots of oil coming out of the joints.

I bought this one to use it and I like the PS coating so far, but not a fan of whatever was used for the black liners.

....

One sold this morning at $200 +$7.88 shipping. Looks like he has one more BIN.  Same seller that did not get any bids at $275 and had a BIN price of $357.50...that auction ended last night.

Deleted the picture with the sleeve upside down from the new listing.

About 3 per person and about the model choice, I've heard from a friend who spoke directly with someone at Vic that:
- the craftsman officially became the cosmonaut's knife in the 80s. SAKs were used before that but not specifically this model and not officially.
- the black finish is expensive and using a thicker knife would've made it too expensive. Why "too" expensive? Because they wanted to make a "popular" realease... Just like the event was a popular event.
- the 3 per person choice was so that people could share it; because people who witnessed the event all have a story about what they were doing at the time, who they were with etc. and have shared that story just like Vic wanted this knife to be shared.

Hi, I am the one who purchased the used knife for 455 USD :) I just registered on that forum to explain why I bought this knife in bad shape at such a high price after reading your comments.

It actually breaks my heart to see such nice collectibles in bad shape like this one. I'm lucky enough to live in Switzerland so I figured I would buy it - almost regardless of the price - and send it back to Victorinox workshop for a full restoration.

I already contacted them and sent pictures of the knife, they told me they can probably do something to remove the smaller "scars" and perform a full cleaning of the blades. They also mentioned that after the restoration we would still probably see some of the bigger "scars" and they warned me that if they break the knife during the process they cannot replace the sides as they are not being produced anymore...

But I'm willing to take the risk just to save that small little guy from its condition. I'm not sure if I will decide to keep it after the restoration process of sell it again, knowing that the idea is not to make any profit but get at least of portion of the cost back.

I apologize for any mistake in writing, english being not my native language :)

Thank you!

As always, your best bet is here on MTo.  I sold mine to a fellow forum member for exactly what it cost me, plus shipping to his country of course.

Seems like many sold in the US are still around #1,200.  I'm surprised there isn't anything outside of this number range coming out of the US.

There are #1,206 and #1,244 for sale, seller is letting buyer choose one.

Hi all,

I just purchased this one (see attachment) on ebay - how can I know if it's one of the rarest edition or not ?
I have good hope it's a pre-1991 model as it doesn't seem to have a hook or chisel.
What do you think ? Thanks!

It certainly looks like it's pre-'91...But not sure if it should have a can key in the phillips?  I was looking at it too.

EDIT: Maybe it's a 'rare' early version?  Doesn't have the 90º stop opener.

Mine has the can key slotted Philip's driver and no 90º stop on the cap lifter.

19 of these sold on * bay so far...so just less than 1%.  I wonder when the scalper/speculator copies will run out.

Not liking the wear that's visible on the backside of the small blade. Makes light contact with the main blade when opening and it put in some fine arced swipe marks.  :P

Yeah, I wonder how many are waiting out there.

Looks like #1,002 came to the States.

Went for 'only' $165.  Not sure if that was a BIN price or maybe a short duration auction. Didn't notice it earlier.

Only one more for sale on *bay right now in the US, and 5 globally.

Outside of the US, looks like they've *all* sold at over $300 USD shipped. Crazy.

Interesting question, Kamakiri - I should imagine #1969 stayed in the factory! #1537 came to the UK - when the e-mail arrived on Saturday, I tried the link, and as many here have reported, it didn’t work, so I tried again early on Sunday morning and had success (6a.m.) - I tried again 30 mins later, and they were sold out, so I was very lucky....

39 sold so far on *bay worldwide.  Scalper inventory appears to be out in the states and the handful available elsewhere are listed in the $500-$750 range USD.  Crazy.

Aside from #100 (which sold for a best offer under $500) and the one that was pre-sold for $440, looks like the practical high range for these is about $250 in the states and about $350 elsewhere.

And to think I had the opportunity to buy one brand new at a Cutlery World store back in 1989 but couldn't justify the price tag then, when I was a starving graduate student living on loans...

Now this is bananas.  Anyone who missed out on the MOTM now has an opportunity to buy 15 of them for only $10k.  I mean, that's only $667 apiece.  Who wouldn't do this?

Same seller has a Fischer Pioneer listed for $2k.  Also nuts but I'd sooner buy that than 15 double-priced MOTM's.

Originally, this shop offered three SAKs with those scales, Super Tinker, Huntsman and Deluxe Tinker. The first two, which were cheaper obviously, sold out faster. Being still in my compulsive phase, I had to amass them all  Can confirm the scales are VERY nice. The moon surface is not printed, but apparently laser engraved, so the scales feel like very fine sandpaper. Swell.
