Title: Advice needed
Post by: 82brutus on May 15, 2012, 05:19:01 AM
I picked up this well used 84mm huntsman and want to carry it some but it needs a little care.

Any suggestions?

I have an 84mm golfer and some other things I can use if it involves taking it apart.

Eight Tu -  I would just tidy up the main blade with a file and stone and replace the missing scissor half with the movable arm from your golfer.  Screw should remove and reinstall.  Worth the Golfer's sacrifice if your Huntsman's scales are horn as they appear in the photo.

Well worth the rebuild if you have the bits :)

I love the little clip point blade on the old ones.

I was hoping that fixing the scissors might be that easy, but then I noticed the half of the scissors that are still attached to the knife have been abused somewhat as if they were used to loosen a screw or something.  The sharp part is all twisted up.  Don't know if they can be pounded back flat with any luck.

A couple of the backsprings are weak but it does appear to be horn scales.

Nuph- I love that blade shape as well and it has the metal tweezers.  :tu:  The other side of the scale where the toothpick should be is chipped off and epoxied in there.

Overall, there's a lot of things I like about this little knife. I'm looking for any options for restoring it and hopefully get advice from anyone that's ever tried to mod one like this.  I've only done the cellidor models and I can hide the rivets under the scales if they are ugly.  Also, I don't want to try and pry it apart and totally lose the beauty of the current scales or mess them up any worse than they are.

I've never dealt with horn, is it pretty sturdy or does it break really easily?

Me too!  I wish they'd go back to that for the small blade. I really dislike the little spearpoint.

I think I'd be tempted to use scissors from a new 91mm knife, and re-shape them to fit. 84 mm scissors Re rare.

Careful not to damage the scales upon removal.

Also, I'd call it an 84 mm Fieldmaster, since it has a Phillips instead of a corkscrew.
