Looking good! Never heard of rambutan though. Looks like a lychee, but hairy :D
I love lychees. Does the rambutan taste similar?

I love SAK pliers.
I've never owned a SAK with pliers, but could be interested, however I'm not sure what I'd use them for, but that may be just lack of imagination... For most pliers-type jobs it seems like I'd usually need something hefiter, like those on my Leatherman (Knifeless) Fuse, but the Fuse is too big and heavy to carry around all day... What do you think are the most useful applications for the SAK pliers?

Yes it is definitely small size. But it is very useful in my daily activities. For sure I use it for light duty tasks only, like pulling car fuse, removing staples, cutting small wire and much more. It's been countless times the little pliers help me. That's why when I leave home I always carry SAK with pliers.

Think of the small SAK pliers as an extension of your fingers. When you need to pinch or hold something the little pliers are quite nice. Craft work is also an area where the SAK pliers come in handy. I recently sewed up a leather sheath and used the pliers to pull the needle thru the holes. I've also used them for added reach to grasp something. This is especially handy when the thinness of the pliers is better suited vs thick fingers.

Fair enough, I'm almost convinced, it's just that it's such a thick layer! I have thought possibly about getting my Cybertool 29 modded so that it only has the bit driver and pliers and scissors, so it's just a tool, but not sure how feasible that would be to do, as what would you do with the scale and liner on the side that normally has the corkscrew cutout?

RE: Winking rambutan flavor...The ones here (Southern California, USA) taste like green grapes with a hint of coconut. But in their native region I hear they are sweeter.
RE: SAK pliers (91mm and 111mm) I don't think of them the way I think of heavy duty pliers.
- They can hold a pin while a lighter flame is applied to it (to sterilize to lance a blister while hiking, for instance)
- They are good for repairing eyeglass hinges (cap lifter or metal file tip to pry hinge apart, pliers to squeeze together)
- I use 2 SAKs with pliers to add or remove loops/links to necklace chains
- The wire cutter works fine on smaller wires, and I use the pliers to hold wires while soldering where it would be too hot to touch.
- In the absence of a socket, I use them on electronics nuts around potentiometers, switches and audio jacks
Anytime you need a lot of force, of course you'd want SwissTool or Wenger 130mm/Rangergrip type..Though when I need larger pliers, I generally prefer the slip joint type, not the needle-nose shape.

Made 'krentjebrij' yesterday.
It's a traditional Gronings recepie, Groningen is the Nothern province in the Netherlands.
Krentjebrij is also made in other parts of the Netherlands, but it's by far most popular in Groningen.
It consists of raisins and currants, groats and berryjuice.
It's delicious hot and cold. If you leave it over night it becomes thicker like porridge.

I know that stuff by the name watergruwel, and I love it!
I believe that 'watergruwel' is the generic Dutch name for the dish. I grew up with krentjebrij however, so it will always be krentjebrij to me.
My parents used to make it every now and then, and usually when I visited my grandparents we ate krentjebrij. I do recall their version to be a lot thinner and sweeter. They used a lot, a-LOT of sugar! :D

Today we will fire up the BBQ for the first real BBQ in our new home :D
The relish was made with the Solo only. I'd recommend using a non folding knife as the onions get all slippery and slimey. It gets everywhere and I had to really clean my Solo afterward.

She is isn't she. But this Solo has seen some serious action. I'm looking for a better specimen.
Or were you talking about the pizza?
Yesterday I was waiting for my girlfriend in a restaurant and could not help myself: a blackberry cake thing.
It wasn't as sweet as I expected, it had a more natural flavour. It was really good.

I wanted to post this earlier, but I knid a forgot.
A week ago I went on a trip and had to travel light. Due to my schedule there wasn't any time to take a moment to buy food.
So I took an MRE; Meal Ready to Eat. Depending on who you ask they might say Meals Refusing to Exit or Meals Rejected by Ethiopians.
But I like them, they are quick and actually taste very nice. Although this might tell you more about my cooking skills than anything else. ;)
You don't need much to prepare an MRE, a knife comes in handy. So I took out my Handyman.
This MRE in question is #9 (2016).
After my hectic journey and following meeting it was time to sit down, relax and eat.
#9 offers me Beaf Stew. 10 minutes on the heating element and it's ready to go.
It tasted remarkably well.
I made the Hazlenut Chocolate drink to flush it down.
Again, the Handyman was used to open the packages.
Then it was time to go to bed. I brought a Dutch Army sleeping bag and crashed on the cough.
The next day was a day off, but I had plenty of things planned. Including picking up a Amefa 1984 DAK, of which I wrote in other posts already.
Breakfast is included in the MRE, and this is how I usually use them. As Dinner and then Breakfast the next day.
It was a multigrain snackbread with peanut butter. Sadly no chunks. And I could not figure out for the life off me what to put the jelly on.
Again the Handyman proved itself usefull by opening packages and putting the peanutbutter on.
And then it came to me:
Americans put jelly on peanut butter.
After I did my errands it was time to head home. I saved the snacks from the MRE for the road.
But traditionally my first stop was at a tankstation that used to make it's own meatballs.
The Amefa didn't prove very sharp and I basically tore the meatball apart.
An hours drive later I put the car at the side of the road and had a little snack moment.
A bottle of Arizona Ice Tea, and Honey Pretzels from the MRE. I switched back to the Handyman for opening packages.
Last stop, nearly home. Time for a coffee and what I believed to be MRE Raisins. I really like those. Sadly it was a nut-raisin mix. Not even nearly as sweat as the MRE Raisins.
But good nonetheless.
And that concluded the trip and the snacks. Back home it was time to clean the Amefa and give it a proper edge.

They are. The one's from Vieira are very thin, compact and not salty at all. They're really meant to be a source of fiber and hit your stomach like concrete (not to mention getting stuck in any nook and cranny of your teeth). The Tuk, well, I think you know them. Slightly salty, very light. I like to mix them up.
I've seen Tuk with cheese and bacon flavour, but haven't tried them (yet). The idea is getting less chemicals and more "natural" snacks.

I'm beginning to think that sandwiches in the U.S. are really overstuffed compared to the rest of the world.

I don’t like sandwiches that are so big I can’t get my mouth around it, but some do really think more is better.

Chipotle is one of those that you eat some and then make something else with the leftovers.

Breakfast
(https://up.picr.de/37882006ha.jpeg)
Pardon my curiosity...
I've seen that as a classic breakfast in Europe, so I have to ask...
How does one assemble a bite? I'm led to believe that one doesn't pile everything atop a slice of bread and squash it down with another buttered inverted slice of bread...
That breakfast also comes with a big plate of onion... Is it pickled or prepared in any way to take the "bite" out of it? How much of that is used... Where... And how?
Thanks in advance for diminishing my ignorance.

I am not sure that I understood the question correctly. You take a slice of bread and spread / lay / sprinkle on what you want and eat it. Then you take the next slice of bread and start over. The basis is always bread with butter, curd cheese or cream cheese. That can then be supplemented with a hundred options, whatever you have at home and feel like it. The onion plate today was very small, but raw for maximum taste. In my family we do it that way. I cannot speak for all Europeans.
How do you eat your breakfast?

You're describing what my thought was... spread/sprinkle/repeat. I suppose I was wondering what toppings the onion goes with, and how much onion is used.
In my part of the US, there's somewhat of a commitment and a point-of-no-return with this sort of breakfast. You get just one chance to put things on your slice of bread. (If we do use onion it's often just one or two rings from a slice). Once you decide what goes on your bread, you put a second slice on top and that's it. You can not have more bread. You can not add or remove from your existing bread You can not have jam and egg on the same bread. You can only have onion and egg on the same bread. There's a strong sense of finality when it comes to the American breakfast - once you start eating your breakfast, if you find that there's too little butter, a very tart jam, or too much onion, you can not change it. You have to eat it. Some people would throw the whole creation in the trash if they felt so unsatisfied.
I'm fortunate to be able to eat what my family has adopted of a European breakfast on weekends. Today I had one slice of bread topped with cheese and apricot preserves, and a second slice topped with butter and raw honey, and a third slice topped with avocado and another kind of cheese.
In two days time, I promise to post a picture of my SAK with my weekday breakfast. You'll see what I mean.
-
@ElevenBlade. I'm looking forward to your american breakfast. Sounds interesting and very different from ours.
We eat a lot of onions. At the moment our onions are very hot, so only two or three slices per bread. If they are mild we need a whole big onion for breakfast.
Two of my 4 slices of bread this morning, ready to be eaten:

No sir! On most days my first (and last) meal is dinner.
I'm making breakfast tomorrow just for you.

I too, never used to eat breakfast. Only on the weekends. That changed when I became a diabetic. In order not to take a shot or a pill, I had to change my eating habits100%. No sugar and had to start eating, breakfast every day! Went from 210 to 175 and have maintained it. For about 5 years now. By giving up sugar, food tastes a whole lot better!
-
I am not usually hungry in the morning. I wake typically about 5am and am hungry about 10am. I guess for most that can still be considered breakfast. I'll have something like oatmeal if I am off but on a work day I'll have fruit and granola. Light lunch if I have lunch and dinner.
-
Amazing! :o I would really suffer if I could only eat something in the evening. (Please do not understand it as a criticism, everyone should eat what and how they like it)
@ElevenBlade: I am honored, but please have breakfast for you too. ;)
@Rapidray. Healthy eating is a huge issue. I was a candidate for diabetes! My doctor asked me whether I am providing for old age financially. When I answered yes, he laughed out loud and said it was a waste of money! With my lifestyle, I wouldn't experience my retirement anyway! That's when I woke up.
For a couple of years now I have been eating at least 80% food that is fresh, has no list of ingredients and contains no sugar or white flour. And I'm fine with it.
My dessert snack today - of course with a SAK.
Ripe grapefruit. Delicious!

:iagree: Giving up sugar is 90% of the battle and it can be done!

Had to give up (processed) sugar too for medical reasons. My stomach cannot process much of it anymore without serious complications. Since then my wife and I have changed our eating habits completely. It was hard at first, but so worth it. Lots of fresh stuff and we almost never go out to eat. We also do regular workouts and have never felt better or more energetic.
I could not exist without breakfast. I wake up and I am hungry like a bear :D I also have a very fast metabolism. They tested me once. If I wouldn‘t do anything but lay in bed all day and breath, I would need about 2500 calories just to stay alive. My wife is the opposite, hers is very slow, and she hates the fact that I can loose weight really fast if need be

Glad you like it.
In this part of the urban-suburban US, it's common to buy an egg and (American) cheese sandwich with bacon or sausage (or in my slightly healthier case, lean ham) from a quick-order restaurant in the morning on the way to work if you don't have the time or inclination to make your own breakfast. It's quick, filling and easily portable. Most importantly it's consistent - there's not much variety to it. That's part of the appeal I suppose - its hard to mess up. That has worked its way into people's home lives, and I make it myself at home once in a long while when I get nostalgic.
My friends in the US will know that my post on Feb 16, was embellished for comedic purposes, but there's a lot of truth to it. We seem to have a habit of closed sandwiches, to a fault. Watch the first 20 seconds of this video to see what I mean, and watch the rest to learn something interesting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pkgr8l_R2SA
My soldier is a 2005 - the year doesn't bear any real significance except for what I make of it. (I'm sure we can all come up with something that makes each year "significant") I first saw an Alox in about 2006, and was intrigued, but didn't know what it was. In 2007 I made the full circle back to the SAKs of my youth, and had my eye on the Spartan Lite (I seem to remember) for an EDC that would be slimmer than the Champion. I actually walked past the Spartan Lite every day for a couple of months, displayed in a shop window. When I finally decided to buy one, I saw the Alox Soldier on the shelf, and bought that without even a second of deliberation. :drink: The funny thing is - If I actually had the 2005 Soldier in 2005, it would actually have the significance I artificially attach to it, but for quite a different reason.
I've been thinking of retiring it from my EDC lineup lately, and carrying the Pioneer X in its stead. But I get nostalgic.

Elevenblade: Thank you for the info. Now I've learned a lot about your breakfast culture. For many years I didn't take the time to have breakfast at home. If there was such a breakfast in my city in the fast food restaurant, I would have used it too. Today I take an hour each morning to start the day with my family. It has become a ritual and the only meal on many days that I can share with my wife and child.
Good argument, you can find a suitable argument for every year. Alox forever!

@Sneider, good on you for taking the time eat with your family. I didn't grow up eating with my family. We all ate randomly and separately. I always made dinner and ate with my family all thru their early years. They had lunch at school and early on I made them breakfast but they wanted easy foods. I'd say typical for my kids was cereals, fruits, oatmeal, cottage cheese and fruit, yogurt, sometimes egg with toasted bread and cheese, they also would have frozen waffles.
They grow up so fast I'm sure you've heard. Now trying to get them to sit for dinner is hard. They work and go to school and have social lives. Cherish the time my friend as I'm sure you do.

our breakfast says a lot about our culture and lifestyle, doesnt it? During the week, I don't normally eat breakfast. On the weekends, my breakfast is a lot like yours - one piece of bread after another, each with whatever random selection of toppings interests me at the time.

With our family, we always ate dinner together and on Sunday morning we had breakfast together.
Was out shopping and brought home a few items...I do love Walmart’s Omega 3 nut mix :mail:

Its such a simple yet IMO wonderful thing to do is to have a meal with your family. Sleep can wait IMO. When my kids were young they would instinctively get hungry and loiter in the kitchen around what they perceived dinner time to be. They'd began to set the table and wash up. If I was "late" to make dinner, they'd eventually ask if they can help. Breakfast unfortunately just didn't get the attention as they wanted easy ( even tho I'd make it ) or they wanted what I mentioned.
Now of course they all say they wished they let me cook breakfast when they were young. I loved having them help too, I know in some homes mom makes dinner while everyone sits. I loved having the kids involved and now they can do quite a lot in the kitchen themselves. We recently looked at a picture of us making Thanksgiving. My kids we too cute all helping prepare the meal. They were all so proud too when we served.

I see many families in my country who do not eat together, some because the daily rhythm forces them to do so. But many people don't seem to see any value in taking the time to eat together. This makes me thoughtful. :-\
How true, when you have children you realize how quickly time flies. :salute:

For me, the food ritual has a special meaning. I had real health problems that I could solve with the type of what and how I eat. A lot has changed since I started doing it. I feel like other foods and they make me so satisfied and full that I hardly want to eat anything between meals. I always eat until I'm really full. Before the changeover, I ate twice as much and was always hungry (or thought I was)
Today I always take my time to eat. If at all possible from fresh ingredients, I take the lunch menus from home to work. I avoid eating in a hurry or distracted. Only the food and the people at the table (Or if I eat alone, I just enjoy the rest) No smartphone, no TV, no news on the radio. Deliberately taste what I eat and look each other in the eye while listening or telling what is enjoyable, new or important, planning or reviewing the day, planning the weekend, etc., etc.
-
:hatsoff: As it should be. We had a no TV or phone rule too. We had such wonderful conversations. The table was where we dreamed, planned, and expressed ourselves without judgment or ill attitude. We laughed and sat at time far longer than I thought we would. No one rushed off the table other than for dessert.

Here I am thinking how I never noticed this topic before. But browsing the first pages I know why I may have avoided this one...
Last thing I need to do is get hungry more often, I need to loose some weight, not gain some weight...
:ahhh
Great topic full of beautiful and tasty pics .
Hello TG, welcome to this thread and thank you for your comment.
I'm glad if you like it. Well, when it comes to eating in words and pictures, it promotes appetite. For me, eating is one of the most enjoyable things. But I am getting to an age where it is more difficult to maintain weight. My solution is to take time for eating, enjoy it consciously and celebrate. So I need less than when I give in to binge eating unconsciously
Exceptionally a pic with no SAK:

Inspired by Sneiders always awesome looking boards, I figured I do an extended breakfast myself this morning. Instead of just slapping something on a piece of bread i took time preparing and arranging it, then enjoying the eating experience. :hatsoff: to Sneider, he is on to something :D

That looks great. I really think you guys are on to something. Meals with a lot of different colors tend to be healthier... and taking your time and making a ceremony out of a meal surely has benefits too.

Thank you gents and thanks Sneider for the inspiration. I enjoyed the whole experience. Might have to make it a weekly ritual. I don‘t think I would find the time and motivation to do it every day :D

I highly recommend it - until this current pandemic happened - it was a weekend ritual for me.
Over the last few days, I have honestly been thinking about doing an abbreviated version in the form of pour-over coffee on the weekends. Though the way things are going with shipping - I'd probably get the needed equipment next year, if at all.

Interesting table though. In most languages the name is somewhat similar to „Ananas“, only in English it is way off.

Don't worry - one of the things I like best about MTo is that I get to have friends from all over the world. It is my lack of education that I don't know how to speak your language.

Toblerone might be my favorite chocolate. Professional Toblerone eaters will note that the optimal way to break off a piece is to press the peak toward the rest of the bar and crack the base... only the uninitiated will break the piece away by gripping the peak and pulling.

Just packed the spitflip, I love this thing, I bought something similar from a company who makes a double walled drinking bottle but then you can flip it over and it has a storage side, you can put your keys or food in, now obviously I don’t need a double walled aluminum container for sunflower seeds, but I spoke with the manufacturer and they originally started with just a simple plastic double ended container, and they said they actually had a few left in storage and would sell me one, so I was nuts, so I got it, then like 2weeks later I find this thing at a dollar store like wow just $1, fresh seeds one side, spittoon on the other, nice thing is I take a piece of paper and fold a cup then put it into it before so all I have to do is take the paper cup to the trash and close it up..

Far away from your great snacks/mountain photos.
All the pics were taken during only 5 days in Krkonše mountains in the north of Czechia.
Chidling, you're far to modest here...
Krkonoše Mountains is a czech national park, as well as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve site. And the highest mountains in Czechia, with the Snow mountain (1602 m) on top, now that the Tatra and Fatra belong solely to Slovakia (and Poland). No need to envy the Swiss Alps :tu:
-
The meaning of Far away from your great snacks/mountain photos. was, that my photos just cannot be so good as Sneider's. His pics are the best here, I think.
Czech mountains are nice and I love them, especially Krkonše, but simply they are not so high and large as Alps or Tatra/Fatra in Slovakia or wonderful Alps in Slovenia. Those are just another level.
Some snacks and SAK uses from my trip to Krkonoše.

Pilsner-type lager, which is most common in Czechia.

-
@Chidling: Thanks for the top rating of my own annoying pictures! ;)
And captured a great atmosphere again, I like it!
Our regions are so different and there are endless beautiful places. For me it's not about comparison or a competition who takes the "most beautiful/spectacular" pictures,
I just like to see other places where I'm not. Ideally with SAKs, EDC stuff, food etc. (just my thoughts)
I don't live in the middle of the Alps either, but in the flatter part of Switzerland. My favorite vantage point where I live.

And yes, the sausages were tasty. :)
Outside in nature, after a bit of exercise, the food tastes best, is it the same with you guys?

Quite possibly. I visited Cedar City, Utah for Thanksgiving of 2016...and food tasted better there than it did in Fresno, California (where I lived at the time). The mountain air may have had something to do with that.

Thanks for the feedback, then I'm not the only one with this experience.
Bread, cheese and dry sausage, for example, is considered a simple meal here.
But after hours of hiking in the mountains, it was a feast and tasted unbeatably good!

Wonderful pictures Sneider. Food does taste especially good during/mid/after a hike. Even a handful of dried fruits along the trail are so yummy.
