Title: Last MT Mod of 2012, A Squirt Micro-Awl
Post by: Metropolicity on January 01, 2013, 12:53:50 AM
I've been on an Awl-some kick lately and finding unused features, drivers and implements on MTs and transforming them into awls has been a pretty fun trick.

My latest and last mod of 2012 is a micro sized awl. I've always had a soft spot for the Squirt PS4, it combines many, if not all the micro sized tools I want in a keychain MT. However, the soft aluminum scales stop me from carrying it often. I can't stand the look of rubbed down, anodized aluminum. Give me steel scales any day.

In any case, here it is. The small driver, which is too small for anything useful, and not small enough for glasses, but perfect for a small awl. So the formula to make an awl is this, find a medium/long driver, taper edge with flat end mill, then cut edge with a 1/8' ball mill. That creates a concave edge that can be sharpened time after time and is a clock wide cutting motion.

This soft pine is no match for the micro-awl

and it folds back nicely with no edge to get cut on :)

Can't wait to see what 2013 brings for the MT world, with SHOT just around the corner, you know that I'll be ready with a file, sandpaper and a grinder ready to make anything work!

Bah! I bunged up my "first mod of 2013". I was trying to make a Dime style package opener with the file. While I got the profile right, the edge was elusive and I made my ugliest mod ever. It's this mangled serrated monster that works, but no one would want to call a son.

I just found and ordered a bunch of s4s, p4s, e4s and a second PS4 to salvage for parts to make the ultimate Squirt. Can you say....T&t?

What about the Wingman style package opener in the Juice S2? Or even another platform like the Master, Commander or Black Tide? The package opener is the only tool I liked on the Wingman.

THAT'S RIGHT! Yah, I was even thinking of getting a plain Dime and see if the components fit. I am working on my own ultimate Juice (BO version of course). If I have a proper blade like on a Wave/Charge, I will want to use those. The package opener is just a proof of concept thing.
