Too long videos, with detailed unboxing, where more time is spent in opening/describing the box than using the tool.
(the one more affected by the Parkinson's disorder) holds the camera.
Yet a bad video review is better than no review because it still gives some info on the tool.
Gareth, off-topic but I am always amused and annoyed by people reviewing items on amazon, giving them 5 stars and saying that they have just received the item and the initial impressions are good....
How can you give 5 stars to something you have not even used yet... Are they desparate for attention or just do not understand what they are doing to others by giving top marks to a product based on its looks/box it came in.
(same goes for people who give bad marks to the product based on the fact that it took too long to arrive/ordered the wrong size etc)
Any review longer than 10 minutes - If you can't say it concisely and neatly think harder and re-record - I don't have time for longer.
Unboxings - What a waste of time - As many of you have said - Except maybe the limited editions??
Reviewers who say stuff like "Um err I really like this tool" - and not much more than that.
So what  .... Tell me what it does and your experiences of using it.
Gareth - Loved your Rebar review - This was pretty much a perfect review for me :-)
Oh and BTW - Also loved you dulcit tones - reminded me of Alba - even if you do come from the wrong end of the M8 :D
Gorgeous, beautiful, perfect knives I can't afford!
  :ahhh :twak:
Gloves never bothered me. Even quality not so much. Some people just can't afford the tool and the camera I figure. The younger one more so. It the unprepared one with tons of ummms and uhhs.
I know if I ever did one, I would have to wear gloves because people would not like to see my hands. They are so torn up, dry, stained with oil and grease. And that's after I would my hands with lava soap. Lmao!

The best reviews I`ve seen on the Tube are by a guy from Germany, I think his name is Stefan Schmalhaus(?). Excellent lighting, camera on a tripod, accurate and concise description of the product and a modicum of humour. What makes the other reviews look even more awful and his so much better is that 1) English is not his first language and 2) I think he even shows his camera/lighting setup in his blog or on another video. Oh dear.
How about reviewers giving incorrect information or otherwise not knowing what they are talking about? :ahhh
C'mon people...if you're going to take the time to do a review, take the extra 30 seconds to make sure you have your facts straight.
I just wanted to share with you my very first review. I think I did a bang up job! :salute:

Yes, I can not understand why anybody would watch a review like that:
Very little is said about the knife, it is not shown clearly, lots of unboxing and reading.... :mail:
or worse the paper cut test... WTF :ahhh  :bnghd: :bnghd:
Yes, I can not understand why anybody would watch a review like that:

Just show us the knife!! Nothing else!
Yes, I can not understand why anybody would watch a review like that:
Guys .......... You don't watch reviews like that because of the knives, you watch reviews like that because of the GIRLS!
:D
But, LOL, I watched it for a while... and all the: OOOOH, WOOOOW, Awwwwwwwww!!, .... just... Oh mYYyy GooOOShhh....
Great review derekmac! :tu: :salute: :rofl:Those are some great tips, thank you! For my next review, I'll use these to help make me seem like even more of a professional.
Things you have to improve for your next videos:
- Give us a 30sec intro of sepia coloured still photgraphs of dogs, a boat and an upside-down mountain underlayed with bad 90s softcore 'movie' music
- You need to have some kind of breathing problem, if you want to be taken serious as a reviewer!
- 1 extended cough or annoying laugh per video, minimum. (And don't even think of cutting this out before uploading!)
- You did not announce to review some awesome new knives next week, just to leave us hanging for 4 months.
- No bashing. How dare you make a video about a knife without telling us, that it is better than any other knife on the planet and who believes otherwise is just plain wrong! :viking:
- Background noises. No cars, animals, playing toddlers, annoyed neighbours, etc. in your video. You have to break the concentration of your viewers!
- Likes. You have to pray, sob, beg, fight for likes and +1s nowadays. How better to convey "desperate!!!!1eleven!!!!" to your viewers, than to ask for likes: at the beginning, after the intro, in writing during the intro, at the end of the video, in the credits, in the annotation text, ....
- The credits. I missed "camera: derekmac - narration: derekmac - review: derekmac - guy that bought the knife: derekmac - guy that carries the knife: derekmac - guy that cut himself: derekmac - guy screaming in the ambulance on his way to the ER: derekmac"
See, with a little bit of improving you will be a YT review star in no time! :D
Hoenstly: Thank you for your 'review' - Too much of those on YT, I was laughing all the way through and thinking of min. 10 'real' reviews that would be a perfect pt. 2 to yours!

How dare you post such a text without a link! >:(
I am kidding :D, but a link would be nice nonetheless. ;)
Despite the humor in this thread, I'm getting a great idea as to what folks do that I continue to try to stay away from. Most of the time it's just in a effort to present as good a piece of content as possible. However when viewers point out specifics, it's good for me to actively think about what I may let slip.
Anyone care to critique my lame videos? http://youtube.com/sticktodrum
Don't be too harsh.. :)

More hatefulness: traffic noise/music in the background, and the pets! Isn`t it just the CUTEST THING EVER when the mutt wanders into shot and has to be shooed away. Awwww. Yeah, I`ll shoe it away alright. Right.
I can only assume that not only is editing an alien concept to some reviwers but they don`t actually look at what they`ve shot before upoading it. "Yeah, that`ll be fantastic, they`ll love it"
I suspect his market is more audiobooks than videos. Seriously, if I start watching some of his videos I unvoluntarily open some other tabs and browse while listening.
Maybe it is also a remedy for people with sleeping problems? IdK

If I would not have seen the video in this thread, I would have seen the first 10 seconds at most...
I can't stand girls talking like this in real life, hell am I watching them on the internet...
YMMV of course, guys.
In only the first 2-3 minutes there were well over a dozen UMMMMMss... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKzpEUhlerw
Sorry, guy, to post you here, but... yeah. I won't be able to watch the other 10 minutes...

Haven't you seen the orange multhai-tool he holds into the the camera for a second at the beginning, before he starts the intresteen cooking?
Hm, interesting. Never thought about the USE/Utilize thing. But I do hear lots of guys use "utilize", indeed.
What I just saw and really hate in videos is... guys calling their tools/whatevers "sexy", "hot", claiming they attract ladies with their MTs and such .......... well............. if you have nothing else to show... sure, I bet all ladies will be staring at your MT.........
Who?Hm, interesting. Never thought about the USE/Utilize thing. But I do hear lots of guys use "utilize", indeed.

Is that a Surge in your pocket or are you just happy to see me. :D
EDIT: I just got deja vu about a comment I made along these lines and someone said I have a Classic in my pocket.

Oi. :twak:
:D :D
I can't believe you. Nutnfancy put out a video that was ONLY 13 minutes long? Impossible. LOL
That guy loves the sound of his own voice.
Wait, that would be a bad idea if it just so happened to be one of MTo's members.
happened to be one of MTo's members.
What I cannot seem to understand is why did he not redo the video or edit before uploading
I can't stand it when the reviewer has dirty/neglected fingernails.
^^^ Wow Lynn
- You are mad today -
I can't stand it when the reviewer has dirty/neglected fingernails.
I'll just... uhh... skip making a video review then...
I have a terrible nail biting habit.
I can't stand it when the reviewer has dirty/neglected fingernails. This has not bothered me if the guy is in the bush or a mechanic or something like that. These tend to be the one I pay special attention too.
Sorry about the sorta-kinda thread necro, but I just came across this.
#1 DO NOT give a short teaser intro, NOT getting to the point, then have a 2 minute channel intro. Holy SMURF! Get to the POINT! Even TV series don't get a 2 minute intro. YOU ARE NOT THAT IMPORTANT!!!
#2. DO.... NOT... come back from your 2 minute intro and tease the point of your video for another TWO SMURFING MINUTES, you wretched pustule! Every second you don't get to the point is another second you sound to me like someone stretching their material, or proving you're a total narcissist, or making me wonder if you're trying to sell me a sham-wow towel.
#3. STOP... TALKING... IN... MILITARY BUZZWORD BINGO! F'ing Lieutenant!!!!!
I hate your guts so much. If you post a video on general prepping, stop sounding like you're joe.mil. NO ONE cares about the '30,000 foot view'. SAY 'overview'. It's allowed. General Notimpressed isn't going to bust you to a stinky enlisted rank if you talk like a smurfing HUMAN BEING!
Here's how you do it...
"Welcome to TacMilDouchTardTac.Rambo.Reallyreally.tactical! Answer the question 'What are you afraid of' and prep accordingly. More to come after my stupid f'ing 2 minute intro. I love the sound of my own voice."
I am not certain that he was a lieutenant in the military, but he did EVERY single thing I hated in new lieutenants in my time in the military.
I don't know this guy at all, but he is an incredible pile of fail as an effective speaker. I stopped the video after about five minutes, when I could no longer stand a single word coming out of his f'ing mouth.
Don't the military teach up-front TLDR stuff?
Smart Prepping Ep02: Prepper Threat Assessment with Scott Becker (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Y3f3hSwXfc#ws)
1) It is technically not a "review video" as stipulated in the title of the thread
2) It is, without doubt, the most annoying video I have ever seen.
I hate it when 7 out of 10 videos start with "I'm not an expert"; "First of all, I have to tell you I'm not an expert"; "You should know by no means am I an expert"; "This is only my opinion"...........
It sounds like people start off by saying "my video's crap" right away.
I mean, it's CLEAR you're not an expert, if you were an expert, your video would look more professional. It's CLEAR you're the average user just like me. It's CLEAR you can't force your opinion on ME and it's more than clear that it's just YOUR OpIniOn, because you're NO-ONE for it to even cross my mind that you're trying to impose YOUR opinion on ME.
One or two vids is fine, but when I hear the same long intro of how I-am-not-an-expert-and-don't-know-what-I-am-talking-about, it gets mildly irritating.
How can they sue you for something you say? Isn't there freedom of speech or something? And people don't usually say - plug this tool/light/knife in the socket or anything.
:ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh
On our McD coffees it reads HOT, btw :ahhh

 everybody breathe and count to 10.
:hatsoff: That's what I'm here for. :D
I cringe when I see people battoning/hammering a knife through a knotted log where the tip of the blade barely makes it out the other side. And they go all the way down for a split.
In a way its nice to see a knife stand up to that but it really bothers me safety wise
Plus, Wooden wedges are easy to make even if all you have is a knife. They make splitting a log easy.
You can thank the old lady that spilled her coffee on her legs and sued the living smurf out of McDonalds for 2.86 million back in 1994.
Appears the final verdict was $640,000 USD.

Well, I will point out that if you have second degree burns from the coffee, as she did, someone screwed up badly behind the counter. That's the part no one brings up. This wasn't an "oww, hot", her injuries were consistent with something that was near or at boiling. Nothing that hot should go to the customer UNLESS it is expected to be that hot, and coffee shouldn't be. Yes, Oww is ok. Massive blistering, not so much.
However, I am sick of my damn peanut butter having a nut allergy warning on it. Look, I get it, I'm allergic to shrimp. But really? "May contain nuts?" On peanut butter? Or just a jar of peanuts? I don't look at a shrimp and wonder if it has shrimp in it. That's like the warning "product may be sharp" when I buy a knife- it better be or someone is getting an annoyed email about this.
The dirty nail thing has come up early in this thread. Theres one thing to be unclean and a whole other where the person is in the field or clearly has been working with the tool.
I'm not into watching gear reviews when the reviewer seems to have only the tech specs and not actual usage of gear. I don't count back yard or staged usage as actual usage. I'm over watching reviewers of knives tell me the knife holds an edge when opening boxes. Good grief how many flipping boxes are you all opening? I don't buy it and I certainly dont buy all this pristine gear that supposedly has been "hard used".
My favorite is the packs, bags, and every other container holding gear that the reviewer has no clue he/she put it in there. That item has been in there so long they totally forgot.
I dont care for reviews with gloves on unless you are showing how the tool can be used with gloves on.
