Title: A lurker no more
Post by: Megan on September 11, 2014, 03:34:31 PM
Hey there,

I've been a lurker on the forum for a while now.
One of Grant's posts about the Biolite Stove enticed me to post. Although I am sure I will still do more lurking than posting.

the big question is; has Grant gotten you into carrying a multitool and, if so, which one?

Oh, and welcome to the forum.

I always have my Leatherman Freestyle in my purse. I find it to be quite useful day-to-day. I also carry a Swiss army knife in there daily- it's a Silvertech Climber by Victorinox.

I work inside, so I try my best to spend as much time outside as possible on the weekends. I am really into camping, fishing, kayaking and archery. I also enjoy outdoor cooking, grilling and smoking. 'Outdoors' - seems to be the theme I guess.

I am certainly not a collector- but I tend to be interested in gadgets and tools that go along with my activities. I wear a Boker canoe/kayak knife when paddling etc. I was always the kid growing up who had a knife or tool on them.

Welcome. My wife is the same way.  She loves gadgets, but isn't a collector.  What's your stance on flashlights?  My wife didn't really think much about them, until I gave her a SS Maratac 1XAAA.  Now, she's never without one.  ;)

Sounds like a good kit, but we'll have to find you a nice flashlight.

Would you like something for the keyring or purse, twist to turn on or a clicky switch? :)

Welcome. My wife is the same way.  She loves gadgets, but isn't a collector.  ...

Your wife's non-collection would put a few guys collections to shame. ;) I know we have a few threads here with her secret stashes, CV Pocketwrenches and blue Juices. :)

Tiny, powerful and easy to use.  Extremely handy to find things you drop under the seat of your car, or buried deep in a purse (or slipped under a couch/bed etc).  Not much bigger than a single AAA battery.

I have a black CRKT NIRK knife and a little pink Generation 2 SOG Micro Tool Clip along with a few other things I suppose.
I would probably want something that could go on my key ring with a clicky switch. Any suggestions?

AAA powered with a clicky switch might be a bit dificult as most of them come with a twisty interface.

Maybe the Lumintop Tool, http://www.ebay.com/itm/321104640646

Don't have one yet, but there are some members here who do so they might give you some more first hand knowledge on them.

Clickies are always a bit larger/longer cause of the extra space for the switch at the back.

I've only carried those two for a few months now. I use the Freestyle more than anything. Mostly for the knife I suppose.

I'll go ahead and add some fuel to the fire and suggest a couple other lights for you. :D my wife carries a LED Lenser P3 AFS (single AAA, clicky) in her purse and loves it. (she also recently admitted that she uses it far more than she thought she would when I suggested she keep it in her purse.) I pocket carry an Olight i3s (single AAA, twisty) and love the versatility provided by the UI.

you'll find plenty of people here who are more then willing to help you find tools/knives/lights that you "need". ;)

Good idea. Compound may be more forgiving and not so demanding technically but recurve helps you correct your stance and release.

I've only recently given in to using a release with the bow. Still getting the hang of that. And I feel very disconnected now. I think that's why I loved the recurve so much last weekend. You're so connected.

While iprefer clickies on my bigger torches, i can live with twisties on my small flashlights.

And i can´t mention enough how much i like the last 2 i bought - the Fenix E05 2014.

I love the 3 light modes - starts with low and goes up from there 8/27/80 lumen.

Certainly requires less skill to shoot a crossbow.  But higher bolt speeds, higher energy hits and greater scope options makes them a bit more lethal--so good for deer hunting.

totally agree with you on that one! I'm more accurate with a compound, but shooting a recurve is much more satisfying. :)

I'm thinking the compound will always be more accurate for easily identifiable yardage- and the recurve for everything in between :)

Hmm, Crossbow - once i bought me a Horten Safari to slaughter it.

The last pic is what it will be some day, when i have gathered all needed parts (another hobby of me).

From the buy i still have 10-12 bolts and the big padded carrier bag, thinking to buy me a crossbow just for some shooting in my garden. But i´m not sure how long  i might be excited with it, and when it gets boring (no club or shooting range for crossbows here).

Erstaunlich!

That's so cool.
It can be tricky around here to find a place to shoot crossbows too. Not allowed on gun nights and not allowed on archery nights! I've never fired one before.

I love StarWars, and for a fan like me it´s absolutely great to have a movie prop (replica) that was build from the same original parts as the ones used for the movies.

But you would wonder how many hatred you can get from the collectors of old camera equipment, guns, or whatever was used, when they notice that you buy one of the items they are also searching for  :o  - to disassemble it and "only" use parts to build a movie prop.

I think one prob with the crossbows is their power - they might just go through a target that was made to stop the arrow shot by a bow. Not the safest thing ....

Too bad for them- it's pretty neat.
Yeah, you need special targets for crossbows. They massacre the ones we use for our compound bows.

I did have that thought myself  :o
However - There is a lot of 'legitimate' chat going on in this thread about flashlights and archery.
So my other thought was it should all be in its own thread.

Anyway welcome Megan - I enjoyed reading the thread so far - as these two topics are ones I know nothing about - being a SAK and multitool guy!!

One question for you: long, recurve or compound?

(I can just hear your thoughts, guys... It's not that!)

Ha!
I shoot a Mathews compound bow.
However, after visiting an outdoor show on the weekend and playing around with a recurve- I want one of those too.

Crossbow ftw.    Compound crossbow for when you really want it dead.

I think I love that it takes more skill to shoot a recurve.
I haven't shot a crossbow yet- maybe I'll change my mind.

totally agree with you on that one! I'm more accurate with a compound, but shooting a recurve is much more satisfying. :)

I'm thinking the compound will always be more accurate for easily identifiable yardage- and the recurve for everything in between :)

This guy oddly looks like Mike Ditka

We had some great shots with the wrist rocket/slingshot/catapult.

While arrow might have gone all the way through and the air pistol was the most accurate, the giant stone holes, occasionally with stones sticking out were perhaps the most dramatic.  :D

Welcome aboard Megan  Sorry to hear Grant plagues you in real life  :P :D :D

Recurve over compound for me. I don't have one, just a longbow (well, flatbow actually). Never tried compound as I don't hunt, and it doesn't "feel right" to me for archery to be high tech unless you're hunting  I did consider getting a traditional one piece recurve bow .... but never got round to it

Looks like I may have to come in here more often.

I have a Liberty 1 for several years now, It is my outdoor companion for when I shoot the outdoor range at the local club. I love this bow. Very flat and fast, but the arrows do tend to lose momentum past 45 yards...which is no big deal on an outdoor range.

Well worth a try...only issue, it must be custom made to your specifications. Here are some shots taken today.

Oh and welcome to the forums Megan.  :salute:

Wow, that's a neat, small bow.
I've never seen one like it before.

My Matthews' bow is small for a compound- and mine would look massive up against that. So interesting.
I did a quick search and some people are hunting with it. Most people are taking down deer/bears at a fairly close range. So really anything below 45yards isn't too bad at all.

Thanks for showing me!
