Title: Work Boots
Post by: Higgins617 on December 09, 2014, 08:20:53 PM
I know a lot of guys here are hard workers who spend a lot of time on their feet. What do you guys wear for work boots?

The Timberlands I wear for work have to be the least comfortable things ever, and being on your feet in them 7 hours a day is not fun. I think I have 2 or 3 insoles in them to make them tolerable.

Any suggestions? I'd prefer to keep to the classic work boot style.

Caterpillars, Lafuma (I do not know if they make steel toe cap shoes)

I had a $20 pair of crappy boots and went for a pair of red wings, worst investment I made, after three days I took them back, I was in so much pain! So put the $20 pair back on and was in heaven.. Now if your going to make an investment on a good pair I would say Carolinas, a little pricy but I had them for over six years and were still good but I lost them while moving, so pissed! JR

Timberland Pro's and in general Timberland has always been good to me and my feet.  I do use Backpacking/Trekking shoes as well and they do a good job at keeping my feet dry and my back from not hurting after a long day at work.

I walk on average 5-12 miles and up and down ladders all day.  I walk across roofs and on grass, concrete, asphalt, gravel, dirt, and inside as well so my shoe must be versatile.

I have the most basic timberlands they make, so I suppose that may be the issue. It feels like there is nothing to the footbed, like my feet are just on the sole which has zero give to it. When walking a lot, especially on tar or cement, it's almost jarring.

I'll say those Carolinas were good on everything, eight hours in field, then when I changed jobs I had to spend ten hours a day on solid concrete and were still comfy.. JR

I've heard great things about the Carolinas, my father and grandfather swear by Chippewas.

My cousin said the same, but he had those HUGE sole logging boots, too big for me! Just a standard 8" pair was fine for me.

Insoles are good also good socks.

I like hiking and backpacking shoes for the very reason they were designed to handle miles of terrain.  Basic work boots style I've HEARD were comfortable are Red Wings.

Wolverine, Caterpillar, and Doc Marten all have some great shoes as well.

That's what I'm using now, Dr scholls I believe. I actually put those over a pair of the regular insoles out of a pair of very well broken in Nikes.

Even the best shoes have life expectancy.  I'd imagine getting good insoles helps to an extend but if the inner part of you boot is compressed so much then even those may not help much.

I'm going to have to get a new pair or change a few things around, I just got a new pair of shoes so they gotta get broken in first.. JR

The boots are getting pretty worn out, but they were just as solid when new, I just put the older Nike insoles in because I figured it would be a bit more comfortable since they were already formed to my feet.

That might be an issue also.  They are worn in already and the insoles might be ready to go.  Your feet will tell you when it's time, they don't lie.

They are made not far from me so I got them in the factory store for a lot less. Very satisfied.

These are what I wear daily, and they are very comfortable. I tried on probably 6 or more pairs between $100-$200, and liked these the most.

These boots here are the most comfortable things I've ever had on my feet! I've had them for probably 7 years now, and did wear them daily for a few years.

Ecco.....unbelievably comfortable and durable.  I go through a pair every 2 years due to wearing out the soles.  I was on my 3rd new pair when I thought it was a shame to let the old pairs rot in the garage.  I sent them in for resoleing  and they came back as good as new, for a third of the price of new.  I can get (according to Ecco) up to 3 resoles per pair.  That's about 8 years per pair.  I'm good to go until retirement......

Best pair of work boots I ever had was actually a pair from Sears, their own brand called Roebuckers believe it or not.  Those things were like slippers after a little bit, and wore like iron.  I wore that pair for over three years, and last year finally replaced them with another pair of the same that are still going strong.  Best $60 I ever spent IMO.  I tried Timberland, Wolverines, etc.  That Sears pair beat them all in terms of longevity and comfort.  :tu:

For a neck knife I'd really recommend the CRKT Minimalist and for a sheath knife well there are so many to choose from.  I'm really happy with my choices so far and it is surprisingly easy to carry a sheath fixed blade.  Here in Cali you can carry one as long as it is in full view.

Ducttapetech likes Justin Boots. Ducttapetech boots are a year old. Ducttapetech uses these boots for work, camping and hunting.
Also, Ducttapetech agrees with Aloha post.
Yes Ducttapetech took a pic of his boots.

I think Wolverines are pretty comfortable even though they seem to wear out quickly. Dr. Martens are hard to beat once they are broken in (that takes FOREVER ). Right now, my choice are Magnums. Even though they aren't heavy duty in the sense, they are very comfortable for wearing 10-12 hours a day and very good in rain and snow. I had a pair that were defective. I called Magnum and they told me to send them back in for a warranty exchange. They sent me a brand new pair of boots no charge  :tu:.

I'm currently on my second pair of Uvex Quatro Pro boots, of all the boots I've had they been by far the best. There is room for improvement I think, but they're comfortable even after a long day, warm but you don't get sweaty feet even wearing them through the summer and they last better than any of the other boots I've had. This pair are coming to the end of their life after about 10 months which is pretty good going.
Someone at work uses them too and is happy with them. He did have a problem where he popped one of the lace hooks off but they were swapped straight away for a new pair.

I've also had a cheap pair branded "Groundforce" and they're pretty rubbish. A couple of less cheap Dickies branded ones were better, Severn were OK followed by Calder which were better but not as good as the Uvexes.

IME any fabric bits will start leaking extremely quickly whatever you treat them with and seams are a bit of a pain, so large uninterrupted sections of leather are best. I also like boots with a rubber cap so as to not damaged the leather kneeling on hard surfaces.

I've also recently got two pairs of Grub's Workline wellies and they're great. Best wellies I've ever had and the only ones to be properly comfortable straight out of the box. I have one pair i keep at hom and one pair I keep in the office, so if I need to go in at night I can just pop them on without taking a detour. The day after I got them I spent the day plodding around a muddy field and finished up with warm, dry and comfortable feet.
I've also tried Dunlop Acifort which were pretty rubbish even with an insole, and Dunlop Purofort Plus which were better and two people at work love, but I just didn't get on with.
The Grub's aren't cheap for wellies at £55 a pair but they're good.

I had a look at their website, found a couple I liked the look of and tried to find somewhere to buy them. *gulp*, £160!
The Airpower XR3 are a bit cheaper so I might pick up a pair of them at some point next year when my replacement Uvexes have worn out.
We do get boots paid for by work (I tend to be chief boot orderer and policer) but I'm a bit reluctant to ask for ones that expensive and I don't like to "experiment" with their money.

My latest pair of boots are from an Aussie company Steel Blue.  http://steelblue.com.au/

I thought the Oliver boots I had previously were good, but these are even better, light, comfy and seem to be fairly stink resistant (but that could be partly due to the bamboo sox).

The pair I have were on clearance because they are a discontinued style. Less than half price... WIN

A guy I used to work with bought himself a pair of Dr Martens "Chukka" boots cheap in a sale - was so impressed he grabbed a second pair for me too.
Honestly, no breaking in whatsoever, it was like wearing carpet slippers all day!!
The only boots I've ever really looked after, lasted  almost 2yrs daily use.
Wanted another pair when I eventually wore them out but the price.... :ahhh
Couldn't justify £80 for boots for work.

But the best safety boots I've ever had.  :tu:

That's really good value for a pair of boots, about 15p a day!

I've never had a pair last that long but then I do a lot walk walking on concrete and I think my legs/ankles/feet/something are a bit odd because I always wear one side of the heel out.

In a previous career I needed work boots and tried many brands but found Red Wing about the best for safety toes, and Gorilla or Dr. Martens for general purpose. Since then I still wear Dr. Martens sometimes, but usually Blundstones nowadays. I have 2 pairs, brown 550, and black Green Patch. There's some issues with the newer products according to what I read on the web, but mine have been great. As winter backups I have one pair of insulated Dakota safety toes.

Good socks help a lot.

I'm a Red Wing fan, and currently have a pair of 2412's.  They're about the best I've ever had, and definitely the most comfortable steel toe boot I've ever worn.  Being my only pair of work boots they get a lot of wear, and have held up well for about 2 2/3 years now.  I'm confident I'll get at least 3 years out of them, in which case I'll be happy.

IMHO, try and stay away from steel toes or shanks, and get boots that are composite instead.  They are lighter, and your feet won't get near as cold.  I know I won't go back to steel!!

A buddy of mine says exactly the same thing.  My response to that is that if something falls on my toes that's heavy enough to crush the steel, my toes would be toast in non-steel toed boots.  I may be wrong, but that's a risk I'm willing to take.  Thanks to my steel toes, I've successfully foiled multiple attempts by our horses to break my foot/toes :).  On top of that, I can't begin to count how many times they've saved me from falling firewood.

A cow it what crushed mine. Weird right. She steped right on the very edge of the steel and it bent down. I have had my feet stepped on my cattle and horses, didn't hurt has much as that steel digging and cutting into my foot. Might have been a fluke, but it ruined me with steeltoe.

I just got a new pair of boots for work: Red Wing Irish Setters. First time ive bought red wings, so far im liking them. ill post throughout the year on how they hold up.  Im constantly in water, mud and grease from washing down/ working on heavy equipment, So truly Water Proof is a necessity. They are Composite toe, and pretty lite. I was very impressed with the Red Wing Store. They measured my feet, even checked what kind of instep/ arch i have. They said to bring them back in 2 weeks so they can condition and clean them. I can take them back for cleanings for as long as i own them! Wow, i didnt know any businesses still cared AFTER the sale.    After tax, $190.

for years my feet have loved JB Goodhue Bionic. Well made, very comfortable right out of the box, even when spending 10 and 12 hour days on concrete or in the mud.

I once bought some Caterpillars when I couldn't get my JB Goodhue's locally; and was extremely disappointed. They started coming apart within weeks. Caterpillar did replace them, but the second pair was no better and almost immediately again started falling apart. For their price; they were somewhere around $200, I expect much better. In my experience the $200 (CAD) range is about where the quality level really steps up. Under $200 boots can be OK, but once you go above that you tend to get into boots that are really well made.

I haven't worn any, but both Royer and Red Wing get high praise on the job sites I've been on.

I wore Timberlands along time ago and switched to Redwings then to Carolinas then recently back to Redwings.  The type of work I do tears up the soles of my boots really quickly and we have a bunch of requirements on the type of boot we can wear (at least 8" lace up, steel toe, defined 90 degree heel, etc...) .  I totally destroyed my first pair of Redwings in a couple of months after switching to my current job.  I bought the Carolinas to replace them.  About a year in, I had to have the Carolinas resoled.  Back in December, my employer instituted a new boot policy and opened an account with Redwing.  We now get a new pair of Redwings every year on the company. So it'll be Redwings for the time being.

I recently received these for free. Vintage Red Wing Irish Setters. I love these boots! Incredibly well made. Only issue is they cause blisters if worn all day. These are not my work boots, but rather something I will wear around during the day. If I worked in them my feet would be torn up. I still love wearing vintage Red Wings though. Does anyone know how old these are?

Right now, Blundstone safety toes, black, and I really like them. Also have a pair of Dakotas which are surprisingly good for cheap boots. I don't need work boots for my current job but I wear them a lot when I'm working in my own shop or yard, or about town in crappy weather.

Why is it so hard for me to find a pair of boots?!  :poh:  I have been trying on boots of all sorts for the past 2 weeks and can't find anything I want. When I finally do find a boot I think I want they do not have them in my size. When they ordered they the company cannot get the boots to the shop because of the dock worker strike.  I'm losing steam trying to find a dang pair of boots.

I wear a 10 normally and I feel like I have a really tough time finding anything in my size because its very common and everyone buys them up.

After trying on countless pairs of Redwing's and Irish Setters I literally could not find any that fit me properly. It was probably a 3 week process. I decided to look into some other brands and could not find much that met my requirements, feel, and look. Today the long search is over! I bought a pair of boots that fit like a glove and am quite happy with them. I have only had them on for about 30 minutes, but I am quite pleased.

Those boots look great. :tu:
This winter I have been wearing caterpillar boots for work. Whenever I go out on a jobsite I have to change into safety boots though. The safety boots I have now are made by cofra, and are all syntetic and really uncomfortable, so I just ordered my self a pair of leather V12 safety boots for the spring season.

I know people who have got on well with Ariat riding boots and I've been pleased with my Ariat chaps  :tu:

I've spent quite a bit of the last few days in our cheese making area which means I can't use my normal, comfy boots and have been in some cheap white wellies. My goodness didn't my legs tell me at the end of the day! All the regular staff in there have decent boots but I spend so little time in there it's not really worth it for me.

About the lace flap things. I was told that they serve two purposes. First off they used to flip them up to protect the laces when going through bushes and thick stuff that would normally tear their laces. Second, it is used as a indicator to when you should oil your boots. When the tips of the frills start to curl up you need to oil your boots. This is just what I was told by the guy at the boot store though.

I have only had mine for about 10 days and they are already broken in enough to not get uncomfortable if I wear them all day.

Just a mini rant here. The stitching on the inside of my new boots came out a bit and the plastic piece on the shoe lace fell off. Why do I even buy expensive boots if they are going to fall apart like a cheap pair?

I believe they should be covered under warranty, but it is just a pain in the smurf to always have to go through warranty claims on everything I buy and i'm smurfing sick of it.

I swear it's this place, once you join here you will begin to have things break. I never had to warranty anything(other than hockey sticks) before I came here. I join and now I've had lights give out, bags give out, smurf even the expensive insoles I got that were rated at "over 3000 pounds" didn't survive a month!!!

If there was a purchasing option that said no warranty, but our smurf will actually work. I'm picking it 10/10

Well some bad news on the boot front. I took them in to the place I purchased them from to see what can be done. I was told they could be swapped out for another pair (which I did not want to do). Then I was told I could take them down to a local boot shop and have them fix it and they will cover the bill. Great! I took them down and the guy told me he could not fix them.  :( So back to the shop. I wanted a refund. They told me I could not do that, but I could get another pair of different boots and they would refund or credit +/- whatever the new boots cost. Sadly I tried on every boot in the store and nothing fit correctly. I convinced them to give me a full refund which is great, but now I do not have any boots. I went to the Redwing store to see if they got in any of the back ordered boots I was interested in, but nothing had come in. I finally found a pair that fit comfortably, but just my luck the moccasin toe was sewn on way off to the side and the boots looked all lopsided. Even the guy who owns the store confirmed they were sewn improperly. So now i'm back to square one. I'm so sick of this crap.

Just ordered these on sale for $115 CAD. It's a pretty good deal for Canada. They're Justin JB1104s.

I am wearing some cheap walmart boots right now and they have actually have been pretty good so far. I just want something else to wear that comes up a bit higher to keep the dirt out. I plan to just wear them until they wreck, and see how they do. They're not the biggest work boots, but I think that they will be fine for driving and operating machinery. If they don't work, I think that I will be trying out these Cabela's Roughneck 8" Plain Toe Ledger Work Boots. The leather looks good and Cabelas boots are usually pretty good.

you got a killer deal as well!!!  :tu:

I actually just ordered them as I looked at the prime deals and it does not seem as they will be included and I do not want to wait and have the price go up. The only reason I could order them is I have a money order on the way from a knife I sold. I was going to save the money, but am using it on the boots. Its the cheapest they have ever been so I figured what the hell.  :tu: Let me know how you like yours as well. This will be my first pair of pull on boots. I actually tried these on in a store so the size should be perfect. They were $135 in store so i'm happy to say the least.

Justin pull ons used to be the my favorite, and my safe bet when I was in the market for new boots. Last year I was disappointed with some from my local Boot Barn. They were not leather anymore, made in china and didn't last a full year. There are still some genuine leather ones out there but you need to be sure. The ones I had were the same style as the camo style in your pic, but were on sale for $80. This was a year ago, and the price may have had something to do with it, but I was not too happy with the change in manufactures. Please let us know how yours work out, and sorry to be a downer man.

I know Justin's have been made in China for a while now. Hell, even the Redwing Irish Setters are made in China now. It really is a shame. To get a American made boot (in most cases) be prepared to spend $300.

I really don't care where they are made, as long as quality is sacrificed, and in my experience, the Justin's I bought were more fake leather than real. Hope yours work out man

Well I got my Justin's today and am pretty disappointed. First off one boot feels much tighter than the other. This could possibly be my foot as I have experienced this with other boots, but it could also be poor quality manufacturing as one looks a bit wider than the other. I tried them on and literally walked maybe 50 steps and the leather looks like I have been wearing these boots for weeks. Very, very poor quality leather. If I do decide to return these I hope they take them back as they look like I have been wearing them for a while now. Honestly the leather not being up to par is something I could of probably dealt with but one boot fitting different than the other was driving me nuts when walking in them.

I knew I should of not ordered them online as every single time I ever order clothes or boots online they NEVER fit correctly. I am returning them for a full refund so all should be well unless they try to say they are used. If that happens I will just tell them that is how I recieved them. Sucks because I really want some pull on's.

Thats too bad!
I find shoeshopping online very difficult, as sized can vary a lot between different makers.

I'm the same way.  I wish it were easier to shop online for shoes since I tend to see some really good deals.   I dislike sending stuff back, too much hassle for me.

Just ordered these on sale for $115 CAD. It's a pretty good deal for Canada. They're Justin JB1104s.
(http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0121/3322/products/mens-justin-boots-jb1104-13-inch-black-cow-402541_1000_45_bc23b549-508b-46d3-b29a-2bd79f9da876_grande.jpeg?v=1408547354)

I finally got my Justin boots in today. I'm pretty happy with them. The fit is great and they feel comfortable after working in them all day. One thing that bugged me is that the pull straps are pretty rough and chaffed my legs a bit, but they will get smoother with time. I plan on using these as work boots until they fail, and I will keep this thread posted as to how well they are doing.

I still haven't got new boots, but I can say I'm sure glad I wear the ones I have. Would have ended up with about 12 3 inch nails through my feet today.

Mongrel Boots for Safeties (Aussie brand, they go alright. Really nice sole for standing around in etc)

Danner Acadias when I do not need the steel cap. (USA brand. Cost a bloody fortune here. Pretty good, might recommend a different sole if you have a bit of walking to do though.)

So ive been wearing my boots for 10 months, and have to say im not impressed. I will not be purchasing THIS particular pair of slip ons again. I work on and operate heavy machinery, and my boots are subject to grease, hydraulic fluid, water, etc. It is a necessity that my boots are fully water proof, which these were. Ive stood in 6 inches of water for long periods, and my socks were still dry at the end of shift. The toe did not stand up to the constant scraping on concrete, but without a toe cap, no boots would. But once one scrape was present, chunks of leather started coming off quickly. My biggest gripe is the sole. It is separating at the tip, getting worse daily. Red wing wants $60 to resole, with a 4 week turn around wait. so i may just gorilla glue and clap them. Also the sides are oddly wearing out. I believe that the mesh type material may be too heavy that the leg part is made of, putting weight on the sides of the boot. or maybe the leather is thin and cant take the weight?
Im going to try other Red Wings, but not this particular Irish Setter boot.

That's a bummer. Possibly due to the Irish Setter brand not trully being a Red Wing boot anymore as the Irish Setters are made in China now. If you want true Redwing quality get Redwings.

Its been a while since we talked boots.  Ive gone thru my latest pair of hiking shoes for work and was in the market for boots again.  I had one heck of a time deciding.  First off let me tell you that insoles for me a crucial.  I can easily do over 24 hours on my feet in a weekend.  I have been thru various insoles and recently decided to get Spenco Polysorb Heavy Duty ( $20 ).  I have been walking on these for about a week now and so far I like them a lot.

Now back to boots, after going thru reviews and visiting stores locally, what a pain.  I went to Red Wing among others, I also chatted with Poncho.   I went with Thorogood boots model 814 4355 ( $140 ).  I should get next week.  I went with the Thorogood sizing chart and relied on reviewers experiences.  I also took into consideration my current boot size.  If they fit, I wear them for a bit and follow up with my impressions.

I have to say for $100 less that similar RWs I had to get them.  I've never owed RWs tho others who have have reported these very well "may be" RW killers, we'll see.

Take care of your feet guys  :salute:

Work boots are like a car/truck, it all depends on the driver, some might like a truck and can't stand a car, and vise versa. I always wanted red wings, and one day I did get a pair, they even put in a special pair of insoles, all for like $140. I must say they felt great, but after only three days my feet were in sooo much pain I could barely walk, I slipped my cheap $20 K-mart ones back on for the rest of the week. That weekend I took them back and returned them, after that I went and got a pair of I believe Carolina's, yeah the price went up but the fit was spot on, they lasted me 8yrs and would probably still be just as good but there in storage three states over, so since i really don't need a good pair of work boots I went back to my old ways and with a $20 pair of k-mart's..
JR

I retract that, the ones I got now are $45 Herman survivors, another brand that I thought were great, I had them back in high school-idk when..

I've heard similar RW stories.  I know the break in time can be painful and long with such thick leather.  I honestly don't have the patience for it.  I can do a week but my feet and patience cant do longer.

Supposedly the boots I got can be resoled.  I'd imagine with the "softer" leather Thorogood uses in these vs RW the uppers may be toast when that time comes.  So many conflicting views on resoles.  The max wear bottoms is Thorogood attempt at "fixing" the sole wearing out fast.  Many former customers complained so Thorogood responded with Max wear.

I liked the moc toe style as well but I've had issues with the stitch pinching my foot in other moc styles.  I really could not justify the added $100 for RWs.  They might be great for those looking for a work boot yet work in an office or light duty type stuff.  I have no doubt they are made to last but beating on a pair of $275 pair of boots in the field, I cannot bring myself to.

Thanks.  If they fit, fingers crossed, I will certainly report back.  This brand for those who like Made in America/Union made are just that.  They are very competitive price wise and come in many popular styles.

@MP,  I have bought many boots over the years and so far a couple I've loved.  I have leaned towards trail shoes but wanted to give these a try.  My shoe guy ( cobbler ) says he can resole them when needed so we'll see.  He charges $75 and does a terrific job.  The goodyear welt was important to me for this reason.

I have pair of Merrell Moabs I got from a friend in good shape minus the insole ( hahaha ).  They sadly are a 10 1/2 and don't fit.  I should post them up in the sale section for cheap.  Lots of life in them once you add in a insole. The Virbram soles on these are great.  If you've even worn Merrills it's love at first step.

Well I retired threw out my Wolverines this week :D I put my Workhog Ariats to work  I usually buy them a year or so in advance so I can break them in slowly rather than all at once first day to work :tu: I buy boots that I can wear out places and that are comfortable to do whatever I want in that way when it comes  time to wear them for work I have gotten some other use out of them as well.  This pair I have on is the most I have ever spent on any pair of boots ever and it pained me to put them on for work but my feet need to stay healthy as well as my whole body ;) I can tell when it is time to change boots as my legs and hips start hurting some :ahhh Felt that this Tuesday and so Wednesday I started wearing these that I have on

I wear boots almost everywhere and everything I do so I have several pair but the Workhog was next in line.  Don't worry though because I replaced them 6 months ago as I knew this then ;) Already have that pair broken in as well just not for work.......yet :D

Nice boots. I really want to order some Justin's. I have been looking at a certain pair and they are the cheapest they have ever been. If they don't drop in price tomorrow for the Amazon Prime sale event I will probably pick them up. Here's to hoping the price does not go up before then.

I have a pair of Justin's like the camo topped ones above except they aren't camo they are light tan  This is the third pair I have had of those and I really like them  I gave more for the first pair $110 or $115  but got the other two pairs at Tractor Suppy Company on Black Friday special for around $70

I asked so many people and I no one has any experience with them.  A guy I know wears Chippewa but he drives heavy equipment so he gets about 3-4 years from his boots.  Most guy as we talked run Wolverines, Die Hards, Timberlands, Carolinas, as well as all the other brands.  I honestly don't know anyone who wears RWs on the sites I've been on.

I've noticed a lot of hikers over the years and roofing boots even for guys who don't roof  :D.  These boots will get run thru the ringer as soon as they arrive and hopefully fit.  My last pair of hikers are slowly dying, I've hit them with the AED Defib this week to get a few more days out of them

The only thing I really wear now a days are new balance, a very low cut hiking boot. They seem to have that perfect fit, especially since they have those wide like 3E 9-1/2's, normally I'd have to bump up to a size 10 to get that little extra width,

I got my boots in and thankfully they fit.  I ordered a full size down scrolling my fingers.  I realized I wear anything from a 11 1/2 to 12 depending on the shoe.  I checked a pair of nicer boots I had a they were 10 1/2  which is why I went with a size down.

I think American made boots a more generous fit wise compared to overseas made boots YMMV.

I thought they were terrific looking right out the box and the fit being dead on.  They are very comfortable right out the box with NO hotspots or anything.  The leather is softer than Red Wings so honestly I can say, no "real" break in time.

I didn't treat them with oil yet but I am eventually.  The leather is oiled and baseball glove soft.  Not flimsy by any mean, just not feet aching tough leather.

I paid $130 online which I feel is fair for USA made boots of this quality.  The review were pretty strong, 4 1/2 stars with several former Red Wing wearers.  I'm not bashing RW just reporting what I read.

I may get another pair ( different model ) just to kick around town in.

As of right now I can say I'm happy tho as always time will tell how they hold up.

Great!  I do have one complaint.  I wish they wouldn't have used an eyelet at the top after the speed lace attachments.    It not a huge deal breaker as I knew before hand but still.  Very comfortable to be in for 8 plus hours.

Wished I knew of a great pair of boots with ankle support, softer soles for working on concrete/cement floors, and supported us bigger men types. Heels been aching all year, and now starting to get knee muscle aches. Ibuprofen doesn't always work, and it makes the rest of the body feel tired too.

The boots I got are Thorogood pictured above.  I got them on amzon for $130.  The leather is quite a bit softer than Red Wings which means no break in ( for me at least ).  The soles are very comfy as well with no slip so far and cushy to walk in.  The insoles are great so far as well.

The ball of my feet is where the aching for me is,  You are so right that Ibuprofen stops working especially after 10 days of 8 plus hours on your feet.  I have had back issues in the past and after a while on my feet everything starts to hurt.  I know its part of getting older and being on my feet for days on end and hours at time.

Maybe look in to a quality orthotic if you haven't already.  I got some Spenco Heavy Duty insoles [url]https://www.spenco.com/product.aspx?prodid=42[url] for another pair of boots and they feel great.  Insoles or orthotics wont help much in a poor made shoe.

I also upgraded my socks as well.  Thicker and more cushion in the heel and ball of my foot.  I cannot recall the name of them.

Great!  I do have one complaint.  I wish they wouldn't have used an eyelet at the top after the speed lace attachments.    It not a huge deal breaker as I knew before hand but still.  Very comfortable to be in for 8 plus hours.

Could you get a speed lace piece added to them ?

I'm getting used to threading the lace thru the eyelet.  I don't know if it is or isn't possible.  Not a terrible thing but weird why they did it.  When I looked at the boots I knew beforehand so I'm not terribly bummed.

When they are like that I usually don't bother with it past the speed lace spot ::) At 4:15 am I can't think good enough to lace the speed lace part let alone another spot that has to be threaded through  :D

Does anyone have any experience with "Original SWAT" boots? I'm looking at their 9" side zip safety boot. Specifically the Canadian version that is CSA approved. http://www.originalswat.com/ca_en/product-classic-9-sz-safety-black.html

Thanks!

I've been using Blundstones for the last 8 months.  The Brand is from Tasmania Australia, not sure where they're made.  Steel toe and non-puncture shank.  Lightest quality safety boots I've ever worn.

My boots are working out very nice.  I"ll snap a pic later today.  I need to give them a good clean and as always apply a little protectant.  They've had a long couple months and my feet are still very happy.  I haven't had to switch out insoles which is a good thing.  The ones that came in the boots are pretty nice.  My feet still get tired but thats because of how long I'm on my feet daily.

Well my irish setters are starting to fall apart and had a recent birthday so I had a little cash and boots are a necessity for work so I bought a new pair. After a lot of debating and searching I came across a pair of Chippewa's for a fair price. I always wanted a pair even, more than Redwings so this is exciting for me. I just hope they fit and live up to the hype.  :ahhh

Bummer to hear of the Irish Setters short life.  I had a guy recommend the Chippewa boots to me.  He drives heavy equipment and has worn them exclusively.  I had already got my boots but I did take a look.  I hope these boots work out for you Cap.

Happy belated Bday.

It is sort of a bummer. I have been wearing them almost every single day to work as well as the days I have off. I got them 1 1/2 years ago. It does seem a bit short lived as they cost almost $200. If I could get these boots for $100 - $120 I would be happy, but at the price I paid they should last longer. They can sometimes be found on Amazon for close to that price every so often. I just wish they still made Irish Setters in the USA. For the price they should. Its not all bad though. They have been a very pleasant boot to wear and they served me well. They are by no means ready to retire yet. I can see getting another six months out of them unless they deteriorate quicker than I am expecting.

On the other side the Chippewas only cost $138 and are USA made and from what I hear far superior. A cheaper, better quality, USA made boot sounds good to me. I sure hope they fit.  :dwts:

That doesn't sound to bad, 1 1/2 years and possibly longer from the Irish Setters.

I just bought some Merrils for hiking and kicking around town.  I almost went for Keens but after some research reports were they had some issues.  Merrill continues to enjoy such a great reputation from my experience and reviews.  This pair did require some break in, about a week.  I was pretty happy paying $80 vs $115 - $130 locally.  Ordering shoes online can be a long process but I already had experience with these shoes so I knew my size.

That's because you needed to break them in silly.

if they are the ones I owned, which they look like, they are not steel toed, but yes they are fantastically comfortable. One of if not the most comforatable hiking boot I've ever owned ever! They held up very well too for not being work boot build. They are breathable and bendable and the sole and ankle support were all perfect (for me). I seriously can't say enough good positive things about them. Wondering if aloha had the same experience?

Two thumbs up  :tu: :tu:

Ps. I just got my first pair of Sorels, now that I live in Oregon. I'll post pis when I get them out of the box  :mail:  :D

I concur.   This is my second pair, well third but the second was given to me by my friend and sadly they were too small.  I sent them to Slaughter.  I decided to get them again as I wore my last pair to work for over 3 years plus out and about.  Beat the living daylights out of them.  I'd recommend these to anyone who is looking for a quality hiking/work/puttering around town boot.

Can choose between 3 brands which my boss pays for.
Red Brick, GRI Sport, and some weird name.

Of all 3, GRI fits me best.
Been using that brand for about 5 years now.

I received both boots. Both pairs fit very well surprisingly. The Chippewa's are going back for replacement. Both boots on the Chippewa's are making a popping noise and feel. I thought it may be the insole, but I removed them and walked around and the problem is still there. I think the outsoles were not glued properly which if I am correct is a huge issue.

If it's not one thing it's always another.

My work requires going in and out of machine shops, so steel toes are required. Before being a CNC programmer, I ran machines in 12-hour night shift. I swore by 6" Timberland Pro boots bought at Sears and still do. I prefer the TiTAN models with the soft removable insoles. I remember a pair lasted me about 1-1.5 years, mostly with the outsoles and insoles getting worn out, and those really got me thru the 12 hours standing without fatigue. I get $50 shoe reimbursement every year, so my cost was not that bad. My last Timberland pair were the Everguard Trax model (https://www.amazon.com/Timberland-PRO-53525-Steel-Steel-Toe/dp/B000XEG1DI). The comfort was as great as the TiTAN, but the upper leather cracks. All Timberland work boots have been great fit to me. I love the roomy toe boxes. I have flat feet, but the 11 Medium fits me well. Those with narrower feet may find their feet sliding in these boots.

My current pair are 6" Red Wing. Very comfortable, but they better be when I shelled out over $200 for them. Luckily, that was a good time at my work place when everybody got $200 credit to be used for shoes that year. When I am done with the Red Wing, I probably go back to Timberland PRO TiTAN.  :tu:

You must have some boot graveyard.  The good thing is you getting several year in those boots before designating them work boots.  I'll be ready to buy another pair of boots here soon.  Mine are doing great but I don't want to wait for them to need replacing before I get into another pair.

I'll have to review this thread and begin my search.

Usually when I wear them out there is no other use for them (I have tried ;) ) so if they have laces worth saving (these don't) I take those out and check the insoles for any life left and then they are headed for the trash unfortunately :-\ I have another pair being broken in now as well as the pair I have on  Need to get another pair to replace the ones I am breaking in or else I will run out :ahhh :D

UPDATE.

I've had my boots now since July 2016 and I'm still very stoked I made the decision to get these.  These boots continue to be incredibly comfortable on the many surfaces I'm on throughout the day.  I'm on my feel anywhere from a few hours to 12 and at no time have my feet felt sore.

As you can see the outside sole is wearing which is typical of how my shoes wear.  The leather has been flawless and also incredible comfortable.  I initially "heard" the shoestrings were an issue  not on mine so you can see I'm still running them.

They're drying now as I've finally put the protectant pictured on which has darkened the boots.  I don't mind the darker color at all.  I'll report back on the product but from everything I've read online it should perform very well.

I like the boots so much that I pulled the trigger on a second pair tho different style, 814 4266.  I hope these are as awesome as the ones I have.

Hope your boots are all treating you well and your feet are as happy as mine.

Looking good!

My Irish Setters are still going strong. The heel is starting to wear on the inside and they need new insoles. Still a year or two left in them though.

The Chippewa's are excellent. They are not waterproof and definitely not winter boots so they have not been getting work duty yet. Maybe when the summer rolls around.

The Ariat's have seen very little foot time compared to the others, but enough to have broken them in.

I will try and get some pics later.

Boots came in  :mail:

I am again very impressed with Thorogood boots.  The boots are gorgeous and flawless as far as I can see so far.  I gave them a good look over and I cannot find a thing wrong.  They are so darn comfortable and ready to wear.  I am going to treat them first then enjoy them as I've been enjoying my other boots from Thorogood.

I love the black bottom and color of these boots very much

What I will say is while I've never had Red Wings I can say I am not ready to part with over $200 and then have to have sore feet till they break in.  Sure they very well may last a good long while but at this point not my cup of tea.  For these 2 pairs Paid $300.  I also had no/zero break in time and the first pair is incredibly comfortable.

I AM NOT KNOCKING RW I'm just saying I cannot at this point see myself wanting to go thru a break in period.  I work on my feet so these are work boots not kicking around town boots.  I cannot afford to be in any discomfort while working on my feet.

I may at some point give RW a go but I've now got 2 pair of boots that will need to die first.

Some 20 years ago when I was plowing snow for a local excavator who had a contract with a nearby town, I bought some new Dickies Branders workbooks with Thinsulate. I *still* wear them. I don't wear them to work every day as I am not in the trades, but I do wear them whenever I have to work on a car or truck, or help someone move, shovel snow, or do any heavy lifting or serious work of any kind.

Anyone else have probably put them down a long time ago, but I just keep wearing them as needed. Besides, can't get new Dickies Branders with Thinsulate anymore.

Boots are going strong.  I can feel the foot pads are wearing as they are not a wonderful as when new.  I cleaned them up the other day and they look great IMO.  I"ll post up a picture later.  These darn boots I got are really the cats meow.

So since I started this thread many moons ago, still haven't grabbed new work boots... The cheap Timberlands are still hanging on... by a thread. Soles have split from how much walking I've done in them. And they look pretty terrible. But on multiple occasions they saved my feet, so for the money they've been plenty worth it.

Going to buy a pair of Chippewas next pay check, something a little more on the dressy side as I'm not doing as much blue collar work now unfortunately. Also have a pair of Doc Marten dress boots now, they are very comfortable

My work boots are still going strong.  I'll post up a picture soon.  I did get a different treatment for them or other leather items.

Just a update. I have a few pairs of Redwings and Irish Setters. I have one pair of Irish Setters I wear almost every day wether at work or at home. Been wearing them daily for over two years and they are still my go to boots. The heel is torn up on the inside but never the less they are going strong.

Here are my boots in their current uncleaned condition.  I have been so happy with them I can honestly suggest them to anyone.  I've been pretty good at keeping up with them.  When I am busy I do tend to neglect them a bit.  Super happy and a great purchase for me.

Sno seal is very good stuff :like: :like: and those boots are wearing very nicely :tu: I don't know if I put it or not but I am wearing Muck brand leather work boots (started wearing them in October) :tu: They have kept my feet warm and dry all winter long and I am very happy with them :like: Hope to get at least til Spring out of them :D

Muck, I've heard of that brand.  You have a bit more weather than I do.  I do like the added protection these type products add to my boots.  Glad you had warm dry feet.  I do not like my feet to be sloshing about in shoes.

Those are nice boots but that type of tread wouldn't have enough traction for our weather.

Working in mud so much I tend to prefer boots with very little tread (so the mud doesn't stick to much to the bottom) :salute: but if I were to work in snow and ice more then I would prefer more tread for sure

Had to look that up  but yes those would definitely make walking on any surface more traction-able :D

I went from wearing Merrells  while doing AV installs to wearing Red Wings in an industrial herbicide and turf management corporation. The chemicals we let loose are very destructive to boots. If we get a year out of our boots we are lucky. We get a 200 dollar boot allowance every year. My Redwings were super comfy and waterproof. Only problem is the sole is starting to separate. Shoe goo and some Aqua seal seems to help for a while but they are on borrowed time.
I wear size 16 and redwing has my size in stock usually. Should I go back with tried and true or try another brand? I've been looking into something with a Goodyear welt to keep the sole on .

I need something that is narrow, composite toe, lace up , chemical resistant, and big enough for my big feet. Something like ole school Vasque Sundowners but with an commercial flair.  ::) ::)

Size 16, holy crap Bigfoot, Merrells if im not mistake I didn’t like because the arch was so high, but I went all out on redwings and ended up returning them and went with I think carolina’s, would have still had them if I didn’t lose them in the move, so since I only needed a cheap pair for like doing shoveling I just got a pair of my old high school boots, Herman survivors,, if they were going to be a everyday boot then I probably went back to the carolinas

I have a pair of Thorogood 1957, with a waterproof liner. Figured it would give me a tad bit of insulation. Since I spend most of my time on hard surfaces I went with the wedge sole, which does not have a lot of traction - and they are a tad heavier in the soles compared to cheap Asian garbage that only lasts a year.

Figure would get them as a b-day present to myself, and set me back a good weekly paycheck. While they may not be like walking on a cloud, they are definitely far more comfortable than anything I wore on cement floors yet!

I weigh 385# too, so that has to be taken into account.
Thorogood does make an outdoor boot with traction, they are not a wedge sole though. SO when the snow and ice fly I'll probably be sliding around some, though I have a pair of YackTrax here somewhere. Will have to dig them out.

Put some toe scuff guards that are beast! These things aren't coming off.

Gotta luv selfy shots with an smartphone. Took a lot of photos to get that last shot at the end.

PS: Spoiled myself for my 59th bday: Boots, Tread, and reluctantly the Spirit X. I did go with a size 14 wide, when I normally would of gone with a 13 wide. Was at a 3rd party podiatrist who said I was at a 13 1/2 to 14, so that stuck with me. The left foot is a bit longer, but I have toe room in these moc toes!! Though they were tight for a few days, the heels are a tad wider that I would of liked. Yet... these were made in the USA and are resolable.

Thorogood boots are very comfy.  I have two pair and love them.  I'm ready to resole one finally.  As far as a recommendation I highly suggest Thorogood PACU.

As a side note, if you've found boots you like I'd probably stay with those.  I thought RedWings were rebuildable?

Mrs just got a new pair of Mongrel Zipsiders

They're a fairly good shoe. They don't last forever, but they're comfortable and do for daily wear at work. (I used to wear the same brand before I got elitist and weird)

Plus they're Australian owned and made, so I guess that's nice...

Thorogood Waterproof Loggers

The first couple of weeks were rough breaking in but now they are getting comfy.

My old blown out Redwings after a year

They were very comfortable , stayed waterproof for about 6 months then Vista herbicide got a hold of them. Nasty stuff.

Well well well, its been some time since I've posted here.  Hope everyones feet are feeling great.  Over time I've picked up a few more pairs of boots.  The first pair I bought which I showed I beat the tar out of.  I was not kind to these boots in any way.  I did clean and add protectant pretty regularly till the last year of use.

Looking at the family pic the top row
1.Clark Chukka boots I got pre owned.  They were in such good shape I decided why not.  I don't wear them as much as I thought but they are nice to have.
2. I bought these in 2016 after my first part of Thorogood boots.  These are in amazing shape since I wear these only off days.  I was going to use these as work boots but decided not to.
3. Thorogood I picked up to replace my original Thorogood work boots.  I actually wear these as my off day boots much like #2.

Row two

1 Merrill.  My original hiking shoes.  They are awesome and are looking great too.  I didn't snap a pic of the second pair I have that rotate with these.
2. La Crosse.  I picked these up preowned.  They were in great shape so my intention was my yard boots and wet work boots.  I've used them for both and they are really nice.
3.Wolverine steel toe.  Another pair I got preowned.  Truthfully they didn't seem to have been worn much at all. I don't need steel toe shoes but for the price I had to try and they were my size.  Boot #3 above was bought to be a work boot but I found these and have been wearing them daily.  They are heavy but not a bad boot at all.

Front.

These are my original Thorogood boots.  What a heck of a life they've had.  I was going to have them resoled but I didn't as you can see.  Its now $125 so I took a hard pause.  Instead I bought boot #3 in row 1 then found boot #3 in row two.  I may still get them resoled since Thorogood boots have gone way up in price since I first began this boot journey.  These cost $130 then and are now $190.  I believe they are worth every penny.  Resole is $125 which is why I got the new boots.

Higgins, I hope you are well my friend.  Been a while.

Dang, I’d say you got your use out of them, heck they have nothing let on the freaking bottoms!

My only thing with work boots is once I got a new job and because of my new job I figured I’d get me a nice new expensive pair, well I had them fitted and everything, 3days later I was in such pain to put my feet down, I threw on my cheap like $20 Kmart shoes cause I just couldn’t take them, I took them back and explained and they gave me my like $145 back, those were Redwings, later I did get I think Carolina’s which did last a good length of time.

Yeah I wore the heck out of my first pair.  They were so comfortable it was really hard not to.  8 hours in my Wolverines the other day and 20 total over the weekend.  These boots are not bad at all.  Add in some good insoles and you'd be set.

Nice selection of boots.

When I was in the Navy Belleville were my boots of choice.  I also had a pair of Redwings of wore into the ground, but they still didn’t look as bad as that pair of Thorgoods.  I let them take a deep sea dive because I didn’t want to fly them home after my last deployment.

The closet I get to boots nowadays, seems to be a pair of Keens.  I have had to pairs of Bedrock sandals resoled but they definitely wouldn’t count as boots.

:D Unless what you do today requires boots sandals sound perfect.  I do love my Thorogood boots.  You can find me in Rainbow flip flops or Croc slides most day while at home.
