April it is then! Let's do this! :like:I volunteer to be the TSA agent!
How about this in April, and in September we do the TSA Challenge!
No blade? THAT'S a real challenge!Yes, that is really though. I mean scissors can substitute for some tasks... but try cutting an apple with scissors :ahhh
I would absolutly disappoint Mayor on this challenge, on daily i use blade really much on work so i would not join this challenge :)
Only Tools Matters
I wrote a reply yesterday, and then deleted it. Here goes. Mods, if this is too political, I apologize, but would absolutely disappoint the Mayor of London as well. In New England, it's an insult to call someone "Guv'nah" (Governor in our accent). Kind of like telling someone to "have a GREAT day" whe. You really mean for them to go f^)k themselves.
Not to get political, but since it has ready been alluded to, I cant join a challenge that supports making people accustomed and comfortable with being subjugated in this way.
REAMERPUNCH, no reflection on YOU, good, sir, but I sit this out on principle, though I realize my actions will have no outcome in London.
I can't join a challenge that supports making people accustomed and comfortable with being subjugated in this way.
If you use blades for work, that's a reasonable excuse, so carrying a knife is justified and legal, and perfectly welcomed to take pictures of for the challenge. It would not disappoint the Mayor of London. Then i could join for this challenge, it wont be easy and gives actual challenge to not to use blades
Point taken.
I was thinking of a challenge that would be more than just using a specific tool or SAK range etc. A month of avoiding using blades seemed quite interesting and challenging. I only named it the "Mayor of London Challenge" ironically. I obviously do not support his thoughts. Australian laws also require a "reasonable excuse" for carrying blades, and I am technically breaking the law by not having one.
If the name is a problem, we can rename the challenge to something else.
Yes, this thread is close to going political but still relevant to the forum's main topic so please let's keep the politics out of it and try keeping it tool related.
England/London isn't the only place with similar laws. As RP said, downunder folks have similar laws, as do a few EU countries, and some US states as well. So let's not turn this into one country / city laws bashing and rather concentrate on the challenge at hand. Heck, look at it as something similar to a month without pliers and how to manage without them. Going bladeless for a month. And report how you survived ;)
And thanks guys for keeping it tool oriented till now. :tu:
If he is that frightened of blades.
How does he eat his steak......Or is he a vegan??????
Do you EDC steak knives?
If he needs an operation, it will be interesting for the doctor,
" guess we will just have to tear him open with our bare hands guys"
Do doctors EDC scalpels?
Nutcases like this moron just don't get It.
One or two people in a thousand use their knifes as weapons and instantly all knives are bad.
What if those 1000 people are all in one building?
If he ever gets a say on vehicles , will he ban all cars because of a couple of Dangerious drivers?
They're slowly banning cars from London. :D
I'm 62 years old
Never used a knife as a weapon, other than in martial arts training.
Carried all my life.
Could, if I so wished, use a knife as a weapon very effectively.
But prefer simply to use my hands or boe staff.
:tu:
Perhaps he is simply a cowardly little weakling who is scared of everything.
:dunno:
Most of these morons are.
Australia is full of them.
:drink:
In any case, ReamerpPunch didn't make this thread for bashing him. It's just a light-hearted challenge to see how much we actually use our blades when we're out and about. :salute:
And I want to join. :D
But if I'm still locked in my house when it happens, my posts are going to be boring. ::)
Is the goal of this challenge really to not use a blade for a month? Or, is the goal of the challenge to be the one who disappoints the Mayor of London the most? I am not trying to be funny, I'm really asking. If it is the latter I might join in. Also advising against April due to the Buck 110 challenge already scheduled.
 :dunno:
General Mattis had a somewhat different opinion than the Mayor of London.

HelloWelcome. It will be interesting to see your impressions. I have been going back-and-forth between the Bladeless Rebar and MP600. Even though I like the Rebar, I am leaning more towards the MP600, because the Rebar saw and awl will still cause a problem with our TSA. I would really like to find a Bladeless Fuse, but those are impossible to find.
I will join the challenge. I have a bladeless Rebar due any day soon so it should be easy.
fortunately here in NZ multitools with blades are ok .More dangerous looking knives are deemed offensive and will get Mr Plod grumpy with you especially if you do not look like a responsible MTo member.

yay, Jothra is here! :woohoo:
I've long maintained it's your brain that solves problems; a knife just speeds up implementation. It's time to put my money where my mouth is.
I use shears at work fairly regularly...at least I did before COVID19. I have a pair of LM Raptors I have never used. Should be perfect for this.
You guys are going to starve to death :ahhh
:ahhhTools are everywhere. I won't exactly be going without.
We said blade-less, not tool-less. :ahhh
Sorry, can't help, I've got a letter from my doctor saying I have to carry a pocket knife. :D
"Sorry. Not sorry"? Really?
Thanks to Poncho65 (for putting the mod together), I have decided on a tool for this challenge.
Wow, nice.... That tool looks like it's right up your alley.I know. My favorite SAK model just with a file instead of a blade.
Thanks to Poncho65 (for putting the mod together), I have decided on a tool for this challenge.
Fantastic mod that would pair well with a dedicated blade or plier based multi outside of the challenge too :tu:I have done the grind on this combo tool yet, but it will have it.
Package opening grind on the combo tool?
It’s almost time to ditch those blades!Yes, it is. I’m getting excited to give my new bladeless SAK a run.
Hello TeamCool
Day 1 here in NZ.
I bought a knifeless Rebar for my UK and Europe travels but have never opened the package because I can't go anywhere !!
Well I could go but it is very expensive and then when I get home it is a compulsory 2 weeks in quarantine compliments of the government.
Anyway this is my pic for day one. The Micra scissors to cut open the clamshell and set the Rebar free.
Should be a good month.

Day 1Scissors are one of my favorite tools on a SAK and I definitely think this challenge will make me appreciate them even more.
I have a feeling scissors will carry many of us through this challenge.

I don't have any bladeless tools, so I won't be in on this with you all .. but I'll be on the sidelines cheering you on. :popcorn:I
ReamerPunch can correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe, because many people do not have a bladeless tool, carrying a tool with a knife is allowed, you just have to avoid using the actual blade.
Will be interesting to see what everyone does for the month :popcorn:I also used blade daily but since this was going to be challenge its lot harder when i dont have blade what to use.
I use a blade daily so this wouldn't be a feasible thing for me to do and beyond a challenge :ahhh
Good luck to all you brave souls :salute:
:D

That opener layer only custom is magnificent! :salute:
I’m also a fan of Lumitop lights

True fact! That's what makes it a challenge, rather than a regular fun play date.Yes!
Day 1
The newly named YeoCho (Yeoman with file replacing blade made by Poncho) is the tool of choice. The combo tool helped by opening some boxes and the scissors opened a package of bullies
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210402/b587b7c0acc61e0ccffa32f719b3107e.jpg)
The inline phillips also saved the day by helping a stranger looking for a screwdriver.
I have a SAK named after me !?!?! :sa:Yes, you do. I asked for help naming it in a thread and YeoCho won.
I am flattered :woohoo: :hatsoff:
Day 2Good use. That reminds me I need to replace my mints on my table.

Hello day 2.Good tasting beer is always a good use
Who needs a blade ? Best use for any MT or what ?
Day 2.
No internet until further notice.
I sewed another loop on my wallet.
Day 2 of 30Good use.
Used pliers today to tighten my little daughters training wheels.

Only Tools Matters
I did have my first need of a knife, but it was aplastic one, to cut a piece pecan coffee roll. I probably could have just ripped it or used the file, but prefer a knife for a clean cut.I doubt regular kitchen hardware (plastic or not) will hurt anyone's feelings.
Day 3How many Swiss Army Knives does it take to replace a lightbulb?

Do you happen to know of any seal colonies in Oklahoma?
This is the best I could do: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seal_of_OklahomaAn A+ for your effort!

Day 9 of 30Okay, on my second read through I figured out you weren't saying the kid was lynched in a cabinet.
Used today phillips to reinstall kitchen cabinet doors at my friends home after his 3-year old kid hanged in it.

I still prefer having a knife, but I thing this will be a pretty useful alternative.I was originally torn between my KERT and a Gerber Shard, but I've been getting a lot more use out of the rescue cutter than I expected.

Don't worry — your post is fine. I was just having a moment.
Day 7

Day 10Ha!
Ate another 2000 of something.

You know... 20something years ago, I decided to EDC trauma shears for a bit. They had a notch to work as an oxygen key, which I decided would make a good anything-key. Maybe I was young, and not as sure of myself... If I recall correctly, what finally stopped that nonsense was when I happened to be at a Backyard barbecue hosted by a family friend who was a doctor. I yanked out the shears from my back pocket for something and got one seriously sideways look.:rofl:
Rebar helped me today to repair brakes on my carNeat! What did your brakes need done?
Hello day 10.I was going to joke, "Why open the bottle when there's already a glass of beer sitting there?" It wasn't a great joke, but I was thinking about it.
A removal of the cap in order to a small libation to the wonders of the MT world..

Then I got distracted by how amazing that glass is, and all attempts at humour escaped me. Where on Earth did you find that thing? It's great!
Day 10Hey, at least you had Coke bottles to keep your tools from getting bored. All mine is in cans.
Not a lot of tool use today, but the YeoCho did help open a bottle of Coke and cut some paracord for putting a lanyard on a firesteel.

HI Jofra
It was in touristy gift shop in a little town called Pahia up the north end of New Zealand. Scared to use it too often in case I break it.
The cheap readers I have stashed everywhere need frequent screw tightening. The precision flat driver on the Wenger Air Traveler works great...even on these Phillips head screws.
Day 11
Bought a blurry turner.
Neat! What did your brakes need done?Changed brake disk and brake pads. Needed to change both sides in rear.

Day 11

This folding precision screwdriver set is a favorite of mine. I used it today to adjust a coworker’s readers and to open a couple of boxes (cut the tape with the largest flat head).
The only tools I used today were kitchen utensils. I ate Kraft Dinner with a spork.
I mean, Kershaw calls it a spork...and it kind of is?
Back to work tomorrow (Easter break is over!), so maybe something weird will come up.
Day 12Fan of polo shirts, or a work uniform?
Day 10 belatedHomework? NOoooooo
(https://imgur.com/AO5lFkP.jpg)
Maybe hacking open a package of notebooks should have been done with the scissors....
Day 11
(https://imgur.com/0aOd7YM.jpg)
Watching me do homework. ::)
If thought the Kershaw sporks look interesting, although yours looks like it is missing a gate for the carabiner part.Good eye. I removed the carabiner clip, which mostly got in the way. Overall, it's a lot like the more common Light My Fire spork, only in stainless steel instead of titanium.
Day 12I mean, the outdoor shot is pretty nice.
I used the YeoCho scissors to cut some wax paper and Leuko tape, for a first aid kit. Also used the combo opener to open a box with coffee.
The KERT helped open a padded mailer.
But decided a outdoor glamour shot was nicer.
Hello to day 11.I just can't make myself get upset about slightly late posts. I'm just excited you're posting!
Very very late but hope Ican be forgiven.

Day 14Wasabi peas are the best peas.
Day 14I do this same thing with grip tape on vacuum packs for my peeps. Good stuff.
The KERT helped open a box with a new cooling mat for Fisher, which made him happy.
The scissors on the YeoCho helped with making a vacuum sealed pocket trauma kit, by cutting some plastic and grip tape for easier opening.
I needed a can opener, so I used a can opener (as opposed to a can't opener1.)
1This joke is both old and tired, but at least the setup was there.
[...]they say things like "I cant figure out why my sawmill's not working right"I would be disappointed if they didn't, really.
I would be disappointed if they didn't, really.
Believe me, we have a lot of those things. The word "pith" comes up a lot. That's the center section of a tree....Good news: I grew up in a logging town in the mountains, so I understand and appreciate these references.
Today again SwissChamp, used file and scissors.
The nice thing about the Swiss Champ is it's heavy enough to use as a hammer in a pinch.I have used in past, SwissTool and OG SuperTool as hammer. As what comes to SAK i havent got guts to use them as hammer but i was few times tempted to use it as hammer.
Obviously I'm joking...
...but on the other hand, there are many, many photos lurking around here of me using pocket knives as hammers.
I have used in past, SwissTool and OG SuperTool as hammer. As what comes to SAK i havent got guts to use them as hammer but i was few times tempted to use it as hammer.
Only Tools Matters
:twak: You should never use things for a hammer....if they're not designed to be used as a hammer. Said my father, every other day when I was a kid. It's hammers all the way down.
As this challenge is in halfway i have seen this challenge actually really hard, tho i have used few times my Hultafors workknife at work cause it was necessary to use it.I haven't been finding it too hard, but some things take longer, since I have to hunt down the appropriate tool instead of just reaching into my pocket. I'm enjoying myself, but I won't exactly cry myself to sleep when it's over.
But i have avoided using blades otherwise, tho its hard to use other tool to do blade job.
Day 15 of 30
Today back to Rebar, phillips and scissors was in heavy use today.

(https://i.imgur.com/nzbrZbL.png)I tend to like finer points, but that could be from the Navy where too wide of a mark could translate to being off 100yards or more. But, there are definitely tasks where the wider points are useful.
The only hand tools I really needed today:
The pencil is a 0.9. Turns out it's my favourite size.
Hello for day 14 pic
Have changed banks so it is time to cut up the old card.
One way not to use it
Now just have to teach the new card how this MT buying thing works.
I find it funny how strong your distaste is for the combo tool. So you don’t have to look at it, I’ll take the offending knife.I appreciate your kind offer!
I tend to like finer points, but that could be from the Navy where too wide of a mark could translate to being off 100yards or more. But, there are definitely tasks where the wider points are useful.I get it. I used 0.5 for a long time. These days, though, I use my mechanical pencil almost exclusively for either bullet journalling or classroom work, so I'm after a sweet spot between very robust and fine enough to write without extra sharpening.
:like: So how are you liking the Knifeless Rebar. I haven’t tried one but I like that it has the scissors in place of the knife. With mods i made to this Rebar, i actually like it. Scissors are good enough for most task. Offcourse i needed to add both Bitholders to it and get rid of awl. If i need awl i have PX on my pocket edc bag along with LL P3R and vic ratchet/l-wrench combo. I decided to keep both flathead and phillips too cause i need them time to time.

(https://i.imgur.com/RiazvKu.png)That’s a beautiful Rambler!
I tried opening a package with my keys, as people apparently do. It occurs to me that other people must have much sharper keys than I have.
Anyway, the package contained a cool Victorinox Rambler I can't really use for another couple of weeks.

I like that there are finally a few different colours of toothpick and tweezers. I've never been desperate for blue scale tools, but I like them.
Oh well. At least I can look at it.

Sorry to hear about the buyers remorse. Although, you are correct about the Metonboss making nice things.Don't worry. It's "I didn't need this" remorse, rather than "I'm destitute after buying this" remorse. I suspect it won't take much pocket time to get over it.

Sounds like an Explorer might need to be in her future.Agreed, because it sounds like she already is one!

I used these titanium chopsticks to eat noodles:

Space Age eatin' sticks!
Obviously it's silly that they're titanium, but they were pretty cheap, and are decidedly stick-shaped.
I didn't need to cut the noodles, or the class of milk I had with them. Mind, you, I didn't use the chopsticks for the milk, either.

Hello day 22.
More admin and then some more admin .Found a good way to end the day. There was no MT use again today but was a bit scary The rebar had fallen out the pouch and was MIA for an hour. Eventually found in a work mates car I had been in .
:drink:
Day 21Nice set
No uses. But, my Wenger Air Traveler and baby Knipex pliers are ready at a moment’s notice.
Day 21
Swapped some screws for shorter ones.

I didn't use the chopsticks for the milk
[...] I swear that I have not used a blade!I swear that I have also not used your blade!
Hello day 24.I've seen worse concrete, but that's not a contest with any winners.
Investigating some sad looking concrete.
The pliers could remove the stones. Not very scientific test but tells the story.
Day 23Every single time you post about dog stuff, I smile.
The YeoCho scissors cut the dog treats for Fisher’s jumpin’ jack. I also used the combo tool to open a box and a beer.

This badge (in two sizes) is straight up just ReamerPunch's image from waaaaaaaay at the beginning of the challenge. I liked his basic idea, so I ran with it. I simplified the image, shrunk it, cleaned it up, and added some text. Then I cropped it, simplified it, shrunk it, and cleaned it up again.
Those are simply sweet. Fantastic work! Another week and we'll get them! :like:The layout was basically your idea, so good work.
It seems I cannot count and have my days mixed upDon't worry. If you could see the mangled, tangled mess of file names and numbers in my upload folder, you'd probably run screaming. It's like some kind of Lovecraftian nightmare.
Every single time you post about dog stuff, I smile.
:like: that makes me smile. I love and spoil my pup, so knowing it makes someone else smile is great.Bad news: your dog is clearly melting in that picture. I know it's very common, but science has yet to find a solution. More pats may help.

Day 24Oh yeah — I have a Style PS somewhere. I guess I could've been using that.
Still early in the day, but used the scissors of the PS Style to help make some cookies

Day 24
(https://i.imgur.com/FwRGcU1.jpg)
Pokey and I opened the mail with SAK scissors.
[...] some of my bike accessories (notably the computer mount and bell) require 2.4mm hex for some weird reason.Oops. Try 2.5mm.
Day 25You remind me that I should really drink more ginger beer. It's delightfully zangy.

Late day 24:I don't know why this reminds me of Bionic Lobster...but this reminds me of Bionic Lobster.
Might be a bit gory, but here's a small pliers I sometimes use for small screws.
I don't know why this reminds me of Bionic Lobster...but this reminds me of Bionic Lobster. That is awesome.

That is awesome. There is a comic book tie-in and everything. The fact that someone at Leatherman thought this was a good idea gives me hope for humanity.
Day 25 of 30Any story that involves making things for children is a good story.
Today again SwissChamp. Used pliers, scissors and awl to build my little daughter cardboard house.

Only Tools Matters
[...]The KERT punches waaaaaay above its weight. My KERT was far and away the star for me this challenge...until I channeled my inner troglodyte, and started tearing everything apart with my bare hands.
I also used the KERT to open a package and the YeoCho scissors to trim a bag.

Me, not using any blades today:
Look at how no blades I am!
How about a Force Challenge? :pok:That is almost every challenge I've ever done. And not just on MTo.
Poor Vicky :DExcept...
Day 26 (a little late)Thanks to that picture, all I can see is you opening that candy with the vise grips.
Opened a bag of Eater candy using the Bladeless climber.

Day 27
No blade was used, but the KERT did help open a new Mora

Nice Companion! :like:
There is also a Companion Spark, basically a Companion with a ferro rod in the handle and 90° spine.
Day 28Well, I certainly read that as crabs.
More carbs.

Day 28Very nice knife
(https://i.imgur.com/CAVhkAh.jpg)
I have been looking for an early (S30v) CRK Professional Soldier for a looooong time. I opened a package containing one with my Wenger Air Traveler today. Stoked!!!
Day 28You can write whatever you want. but all I see is "canine detective uses magnifying glass to take a bite out of crime."
The YeoCho magnifying glass helped me inspect Fisher’s paw that he was favoring a little. Fortunately, it was just a tiny pebble caught between the pads.

Hello day 28.It's amazing that your Rebar can drink beer. Is that a special function in the knifeless version?
A lot of driving and v little MT action.
A good end of day though.

Digging around in a box of junk looking for an old HDMI adapter, I found my Gerber Zip Hex!
Yaaaaaaaaay!
It's a shame these are discontinued. They were great. It helped me install new pedals (I have full-sized hex keys I could use, but why not?)

(Sorry. My Obtuse-o-Tron is set to 11 tonight.)

I used a 2mm hex key to work out a knot today. It didn't work as well as a corkscrew, an old Wenger awl, or an actual marlinspike, but it got the job done.
The only blades in my computer are the fan blades, so I'm pretty sure the time I spent in The GIMP (https://www.gimp.org/) making these images is still challenge-friendly:

I know we have several days left, so obviously there's a lot of time for other ideas. I may do a few different iterations myself, just for funzies.

That is an interesting look tool. I love small pocket sized tools, when they work. That "when they work" part is very important. I originally bought the Zip Hex as a silly novelty, but it turned out to be a real champ. I thought I'd lost it forever, and the most reasonably priced one I found on the intertubes is in Australia. I'm glad I found mine before I made that purchase. It would have been a long wait, and not super cheap.
Day 29Yes it is. I sharpen the corner on many of mine to make them work better at box opening.

Combo tool is a fair box opener.

Awesome use.The Rebar battles a bit with too much liquid so I have to help often . There can be a bit of rust or stickiness so it is better I solve the problem. It stops my throat getting too dusty as well .

Day 30Awesome patches! Especially the MacGyver school of engineering :salute:
I just realized it is the last of the challenge.
The YeoCho continued to prove valuable.
The YeoCho scissors helped cut open a plastic mail bag. The scissors also helped to cut some velcro to create a patch panel on one of my old bags so I could display some of my patches.

I used the YeoCho mini-driver for tightening the nose piece on my sunglasses.

I did need to use the saw of the Farmer X to cut some twigs, but the blade was not used.
It has been a fun challenge, but definitely challenging. As much as I like the YeoCho and its toolset,I will enjoy getting back to using and carrying my knives. Yes, knives plural. Some may think no one needs a knife, and I agree because everyone should have multiple for various purposes.

Hello day 30.I have a very high opinion of the Rebar, so I'm not at all surprised the knifeless one did well by you this month.
Last day of a bit of a hard month. The blade was missed but we survived.
Thanks to the team for interesting pics.
My last pic has a blade in it but not used today. This will be my EDC for the next month I think.
Well done the Rebar.
:salute:Thanks for setting up the challenge, boss!
Thanks Steve! And Jothra, thank you too! :hatsoff:
And thank you to everyone who participated or followed along!
Just awarded Jothra, pipedreams, Don Pablo, Sos24, Antti Lammi and Pauldmmwc the badge  Those that still don't have the badge (if any), go and request and we will get it to you :tu: Congrats to everyone :cheers:Thanks Poncho
