Title: 2013 Collection Photos (photo heavy).
Post by: Chako on May 12, 2013, 05:13:38 PM
Seeing as the weather is crappy out today (Where did spring go? Snowing blah blah blah), I decided to cheer myself a little by taking one of those whole collection snapshots. I haven't done one of these in a while.

I will go down drawer by drawer and show you my collection.

I store my collection in my bedroom simply because I had the most space there. My collection resides in 5 storage units most from Craftsman because it was the only series that maximized drawer space by having so many shallow drawers. As the collection grew, I was forced to find better storage solutions and landed on these units. So far, they have worked excellently in keeping most of it all together. I first started with a chest and cabinet, then upgraded to a second when space ran out. Now I expanded into a third unit of the same manufacture (not a Sears Craftsman labeled unit) to keep everything looking like it belonged together.

Here is a closeup of the two cabinet and chest sets side by side. You can see that there are plenty of shallow drawers here...which is perfect to show off shallow items like multi-tools and Swiss Army Knives.

Let's start on the left unit going top to bottom.
At the very top, I have a mixed lot of items here, mostly multi-tool related.
(http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r207/Chako_photo/Album%202/IMG_2207small_zps5d27667f.jpg) (http://s145.photobucket.com/user/Chako_photo/media/Album%202/IMG_2207small_zps5d27667f.jpg.html)

One level down, 3 seperate drawers containing a nice mix of multi-tool related items. On the left is my meager Buck collection, center contains lots of mixed multi-tools, and the left resides most of my Schrade items along with a few other multi-tools.

Next level down comprises of two separate drawers. This one contains generic Ganzo type MTs with a few others thrown in for good measure.

Im most jealous of your swisstool drawer.      I love them most above all other MTs, and have started trying to find each model.  Somehow I turned into a small time collector without realizing... :D

Which black oxide spirit is it you have there?  There were 2 I think, the spirit S BO, and the military spirit X version.  I found the military one, but no luck tracking down the BO spirit S.

@Syph007

I believe BO Spirit S models were issued to the Dutch military. Reinier had a couple of those for sale last year. Maybe try contacting him.

Cool pics as always, Chako.

That one is the Spirit s. A Spirit RT is on its immediate left. The flash washed out the black colour of the handles.

Ah cool.  So you need the X model then with crimper still! :D

I'll keep looking for an S BO, and there was that railroad one but I imagine they are rarer still.

So far for spirits Ive got the reg one, the S, the X, the road tour, and cap crimper BO'd military X.  I know there are more variants if I count the different plier heads or if the shield is there too, but I think one of each main type is enough for me.

Amazing. We are lucky that one of the greatest collections belongs to somebody armed with a camera (and not afraid to use it).

Dan, have you ever considered producing a book featuring your collection?  I think there's a market for such literature for sure - I'd buy the first copy  :tu:

I'm not criticizing in any way, but have you considered expanding on the Victorinox part of your collection?  For example, one of the Alox Pioneers...

I think I have most of the Pioneers. I just don't see the need to get every colour.

If you plan to get more, you should first check the weight tolerances of your floor. You don't want to land on your neighbor's from the apartment bellow bed (unless she's pretty perhaps).

Thank you for sharing Chako. How long have you been collecting? Your organizational skills makes my OCD so happy. Since seeing your toolboxes last month I have decided that's the ideal way to store my collection.
I've looked around but can't seem to find those exact Craftsman chests.  Would you by chance have the model number or link?

I have most of mine in Rubbermaid cabinets, tackle boxes and Plano chests. My more expensive knives are in a 8 foot/7 shelved curio. All this works fine but I have to spend time in the hospital regularly and I worry some hooligan is going to walk off with them. I could use a steel cable to anchor the chest to the concrete floor and at least make them work for it.

I agree, you need a more secure setup for your goodies.  As with most Vic / Wenger collectibles, they are irreplaceable.

When I bought the first two, Sears sold them under their name brand. After trying hard to find them again, as Sears did not sell those models any more, I found out after some intense net searching that they are made by SPG International. The ones I use are from their Classic line.

Ha, I too have done this.  My collection pales big time in comparison to this, so when the wife sees these pics, she becomes thankful that I haven't taken it that far.  I'd be lucky if it filled one of the smaller drawers.  Your collection amazes me Chako :salute:  I can't imagine the money and time that has gone into such a collection :ahhh

Since you already have all those pics taken, you might concentrate them in a blog of yours. For future reference (and peeping of course). It would be a kind of illustrated MT Encyclopedia.

So.. how long would it take for photos of each, with all the tools open... :D  Or maybe family shots with tools from each model that were different open to illustrate what models you have.   I know thats crazy, but it would be great visual material for reference.   :D

What is the mode of the dark green one (second row from the bottom, 7th knife from right)? And does it have metal scales?

to me this collection is amazing,  but this line struck me as funny

"
Next drawer contains most of my Charges.
"

~304 square inches is not enough room to hold all of your charges?  i need about 6 square inches to hold all (1) of mine.

Great collection, that just stunned me for a minute

I say that because at one time, I took the really special ones out of their display boxes and placed them in the drawer. Now I just store them in their display boxes in a few more drawers.

There are so many out there, it is hard to pinpoint a favorite. However, I must give the knifeless Fuse its due. It has done everything I have asked of it with nary a complaint on my part. As for the rest...I couldn't pick just one. Sorry.

I have a fair few myself these days, but not quite on the scale as you Dan.
Obviously being in the UK makes everything much more expensive over here - hence, I got to ask is that all insured ?
I haven't as yet insured mine, simply because its continually ongoing, but even I have noticed the increase in value from when I first joined MT'o almost 2yrs ago.

Without going through drawer by drawer, I'd hazard a guess that lot would easily fetch well in the excess of 10K?.

Hell of a collection Dan  :salute:

Yes it is covered under my house insurance.

As for increase in value...yes, it is hard to miss. The cost and prices have skyrocketed since I started 5 years ago. A person could say that SAKs are investments...and I would readily believe them now.

Hey Chako
Thanks for the post - A truly amazing collection. Fascinating to browse the photos and turn a shade of green !!
Personally I much prefer the neatly laid out drawers of knives/tools as opposed to the drawers full of boxes and general stuff. Did you ever think about separating them out in that way?
Although I do love the Victorinox football - Fab :-)
For me, as a SAK collector (althougth I do also have have a meagre four Leathermans - or is that Leathermen? :) - in my collection) there is one glaring omission from your collection!...
A Swiss Army Knife! -as in an original Swiss Army Soldier Knife - Ie one of the 1890-1961 variety - I see you have the 1961-2008 and 2008+ models!!
Did I miss it? Or are you more of a modern tool and multitool collector?
Keep up the good work
Cheers for now
