Yea! Surge sized with 2 blades and a diamond file.
i have carried a crunch almost exclusivly for the past year. it excels at every task i need it for.standout features for me are the wire stippers and of couse the bit driver. enornomously versitle tool. the locking pliers are fantastic. one day i'll get around to j.b.weld-ing a pocket clip on there...i just know it

Crunch owner here as well! No longer carry it everyday due to funny looks I kept getting when I'd flip it when I was bored. :multi: It's since moved over to the BOB due to it's hex driver, & ability to be used as a makeshift sawzall/hacksaw/any other saw blade handle.how do you put a saw on it? just grip it with the pliers?
Thread follows, but if I've messed up the cut and paste, a search of the Mod Squad section using Sawzall brings it upStill an excellent idea... :tu:

Interestingly, Whitby seem to have dropped the Crunch fro their catalog too, so UK retailers won't be able to get any more.
Your best bet is to get one from the US. Even with shipping and duties, you'll be quids in. eLeatherman.com always has competitive deals and is a supporter of this forum too.

Thanks Dave
My local DIY diy shop has one, I never asked about price but his other Leathermans are standard RRP
The site you recommended has the Crunch at $69-95, approx £43 in real money :D Shipping is $26 = £16. Is this a good deal? What are the duties?
If customs pick it up (and you should assume they will to be safe) you'll be looking at 17.5% duties (I make that £10.33) and a statutory £8 fee to the courier / post office. So £43 + ££16 + £10 + £8 = £77 all in. Of course, if one of our kind US members would act as a middle man for you and provide "customs friendly" paperwork - that could reduce considerably. Just saying.
The going rate online over here seems to be about £90 inc delivery at the moment. (e.g. http://www.shop4leatherman.co.uk/leatherman_crunch.html).
Finally got a Crunch today. I`ve been wanting to get one for a while but been distracted by PSTs.A very nice distraction though.. ;) :D

Welcome to the club Dave , the Crunch is one of the cleverest MT designs IMHO :D
Glad you finally got one David :tu:
What do you think to it so far?
Just had to fix a router, the crunch made an excellent helping hands to hold bits than needed tinning.

I hadn't realized you were in IT too Neil. :o I saw how everyone called you a geek (among other things... ::)) but just couldn't do the mental step to seeing you behind a dimly lit computer screen... :D

did the lock notch on the scissors from one of the newer tools have to be modified or just the finger tab on the back?Yes, the lock notch had to be enlarged because the lock tab on the crunch is a lot thicker. The handle tab was cut, rounded off and even bent a little for clearance. Also, there is a notch on the underside (opposite of the lock notch) that had to be made in order for the scissors to sit all the way inside the tool. Unfortunately, having to make that notch affects the use of the stock spring. I am almost done fabricating the new one.....
Evil that's one pimped out Crunch :D Like the blade re profile :tu: I've had my Crunch for a week now, it's at work and will be traveling home along with my other knives I don't take to college. My official entry into the club will follow with pics :cheers:Thank you. As for the blade. I originally got the Crunch dirt cheap because it was all beat up and the serrations totally worn down. At first I was going to restore the serrations, but, I decided to go with a straight edge and am glad that I did. This was my first ever attempt at a guthook. It is wicked sharp. Now I love 'em and cut one onto just about all of my multitools.....
nice crunch there evil510 :salute:Why thank you for the honor Pacu..... :salute:
i nominate you chapter president of the Crunch Owners Club :D
That is an amazing mod evil510 :salute:Thank you. I am forever using scissors and always try to install a set on all my multitools. Even istalled a set on my Skeletool.....
Like the scissors and the love the glass breaker :tu:
My official entry in to the Crunch Owners Club :DWelcome to the club! I love my Crunch. It really is in a league of its own. I have found it indispensable as a third helping hand when working on projects.....
Ok evil510 you've convinced me :tu: one day,one day! I'll be able to join this club.If I have convinced even one person to get a Crunch then my job has been done..... :tu:
Thank you, its from a Fisher space pen ;)You've made the first zero-gravity Crunch.
FYI I was checking out some of those build dates and check out what mine says! I think this one would suit Evil pretty good.Indeed, depending on which angle look at that build date, it suits me just fine lol. Nice clip, by the way :tu: I hereby officially welcome you to the Crunch owners club! :salute:

Jim,
The Crunch was first introduced in 1999 just a year after the first model of the Wave and shortly before the Pulse. The Crunch was actually Tim Leatherman's original idea for a multi-tool but unfortunately he did not have all of the manufacturing capabilities to make it in the late 1980's. There have been slight manufacturing improvements over time but you’re correct in saying that no Anniversary models have been manufactured. I will pass this idea on to the design team about some type of limited edition Anniversary Crunch in the future. Michael @LTG
Problem is, now I have 3 LM's on me, the pulse, crunch, and juice SC2. I can't decide which to carry! Does that make me weird?
And I'm back!! Got a crunch in the mail today, love it! I think it will stay on my belt with my pulse. Problem is, now I have 3 LM's on me, the pulse, crunch, and juice SC2. I can't decide which to carry! Does that make me weird?
Sharing is... /forgot :doh:Quote from: LeathermanJim,

Just got one of these for fun, finally found a cheap one on the forums (usually they are WAY more than a used Wave or Juice). It's really cool! I can see them updating it with a bit driver ect. someday, but really there isn't a lot of room in there for much, so I suspect you would have to sacrifice one flat head and the philips to add the bit driver, but wouldn't be the worst trade off. Mine is marked 09/10 on one side but the quality is old school, the implements seem to be stamped/cast and well polished like say on the old model Wave rather than the functional but somewhat ugly MIM parts you see in most current Leathermans. The locking tab might be MIM or cast, I can't tell, as it's very well polished. Love the little serrated blade, Sharpmaker with ultra fine rods made it wickedly sharp.
Hey Mat buddy whats that knurled gizmo stuck in the end of your MT.O tool?
Hey Mat buddy whats that knurled gizmo stuck in the end of your MT.O tool?
It's the Crunch's adjustment bolt :D :D. It does not fit tightly into the MTO bit kit unfortunately , it is just resting in it in the photo.
What is all in that MTO box looking critter? How much are they too?? /ducks
Seen a mod somewhere (just cannot find it) where someone had welded a loop on the end of their adjuster for lanyard/tool lashing carry. Thought that was neat. Wished I had remembered to post a photo of it.

Seems like an odd thing for someone to do, considering...

Could also of been to keep from losing the screw when using the Crunch as a hex driver.
Getting pretty good at it... I wouldnt even bother trying 2 tools at once since my left arm and hand are virtually only good for visual aesthetics.

Same here. Oddly enough I keep my EDC Mt on my left side. It feels weird to put in on the right, I'm just so used to pulling it from the left side and selecting the tool needed with my right hand. When I'm done working it's natural to put the tool away with my right while my left pushes the lock, then I fold the tool one handed with my left and put it up. It's the only thing I really use my left side for, but it's crucial!
Absolutley! Not so quick with the south paw yet...
Stay multi my friends
I will no doubt be joining you soon... When I finally retired my beloved long-suffering PST last year, the Crunch was at the top of my list- vice grips were the only thing I ever really thought to carry in addition to a MT. in the end, though, I opted for a Surge, and I love it- all twenty pounds of it- but I STILL want a Crunch. I think it's a completely unique tool, and I don't want to miss out...
Finally the proud owner of a new old crunch (0908),but had to have the sales clerk show me how to close it the first time. :salute:
I own one and I love it. I actually found mine on the ground next to my vehicle on our way into Iraq. It stays in the center console of my SUV. Handy dandy MT!¡!

Greetings forum members. Although I'd like to own a Crunch, I already EDC a new Charge TTI, which I love, by the way. So I can't see springing for the bucks for a Crunch too, as I already carry the equivalent extra tools found in that model. But I'd also like to have the vise grip capability on my person at all times. I hit upon the idea of acquiring a 4" Irwin 4WR Vise Grips, which are quite cheap at only $9 right now, and EDC that along with my TTI. Has this idea occurred to anyone else? It will just be loose in my pocket, or maybe in my jacket pocket during the upcoming cold months. Anyway it arrives in the mail tomorrow so I'm going to try it out. I don't think I'll be using it all that much but it would be nice to have in that odd situation where I need to hold something down.I think it is a great idea, I like the crunch a lot and have been trying to put in the edc but I always carry the wave. I will admit i needed it today over the wave.

A lot more ergonomic to use the additional tools on the Crunch than on the Schrade ST6 too :D
Having said that, as a "locking pliers with extras" I do prefer the ST6 overall. Not that I'm knocking the Crunch, but as the other tools are very much secondary and I'm unlikely to pocket carry either, I think I'd prefer to find the Vise Grips format in my toolbox/glove compartment rather than the Crunch
I wonder how difficult it would be to talk Mat out of his 5WR.
He'll find another one easily enough I reckon  :P :D :D

Funny you should mention the 5WR :o I got my second one a week or so ago :o.
I did used to use my 6LC occasionally , not sure I am so comfortable now days though   , they are going for CRAZY money lately :o.
The ST6 is my least favoured of the 3 , I am not such a fan of such Long n straight gripping jaws :-\ :-\ :-\.
I started carrying Crunch at work when we had few back to back calls of kids with partial amputation of fingers that got stuck in a front bicycle crank when they were trying to put the chain back on. I bought the Gerber version of Crunch first thinking that newer must be better (wrong). I carry it and it got my pts and me out of some dicey situations. Pretty good tool for what it is.
Can you guys tell me if there is a pin vise on the crunch ?Yes. There's a small groove cut into the lower jaw to work as a pin vise. It's not very large though, so I doubt it'd work well with anything over about 1/8" diameter.

Had to send my crunch and charge into leatherman due to a bad lock an a broken can opener. In two weeks these gems arrived, they are both almost perfect. Has anyone had any problems with the crunch ?

But still, no problems at all in the year+ that I've had it.

How much is the Crunch going for in the US at the moment? There seem to be going for £100 in the UK. That is US$150. Has Leatherman ceased production on the Crunch?

Amazing that it's still going, as I've never even heard of them outside this forum and LM's website. None of the stores in my area carry much more than ST300's, Waves, and Rebars. I love my crunch and carry it every day, I can't imagine they would retire it.Well Mercury, welcome to the group, glad you like it Unfortunately I have to retire :( JR

Sadly I can if they are not making money on them . I suspect LM does not move a lot of Crunch's  so if for what ever reason LM needed to reduce their product range .....
I hope not because it would have to be one of the cleverest designs that works terrifically well.
As LM brings out new models they do tend to retire older ones , I sure hope the Crunch keeps kicking on
The other reason why the Crunch is not selling well is because there is now a Crunch clone, which sells for a fraction of the price of the Crunch, i.e. under £9. I've just bought one and will report back on the quality of it.Amazing that it's still going, as I've never even heard of them outside this forum and LM's website. I think there is some solidarity to it that will guarantee it's place in the line up for a while. I hope at least. Leatherman has retired some awesome tools though, so you never know.
I love my Crunch. While it's not my most used LM, it's my favorite. Except for the Juices, I think it's the best balance of form and function of any LM.Finally did it. Now EDCing my Crunch as a companion to my Work Champ.
Mine has been living in my cycling toolkit, in a water bottle cage on my bike for the last year. Although, I've been seriously considering trying it out as an EDC tool.
I know the first day I carry the Crunch, I'll need a small saw, or an awl, or both...once I've carried something I can't easily give it up. And it's an excuse to get another SAK.You hit the nail on the head here... the Crunch is the best possible combination with a larger SAK!
I carry my Work Champ on my EDC bag without fail. It does 90% of the day to day tasks I come across; I rarely need pliers. However, when I do, it's usually to hold something, clamp something together or shut, loosen a tough fastener, etc. So for me, the Crunch is perfect for those tasks, and compliments a SAK so well.
I used to EDC one of my Juices, or my Skeletool CX, but now that I'm carrying my Crunch with my Work Champ, I've been able to repurpose them all to my various hiking and outdoors packs, where they come in very useful. But for my urban needs, nothing goes better with a SAK than a Crunch.
I'll echo Def's sentiments from his review; the Crunch is one of the best thought-out and designed MT's I've encountered in my limited experience, it's design is simply inspired... Perhaps one reason I don't have more is because the Crunch is such a great and useful tool.
Get yourself a Crunch and pair it up with a good SAK like a Vic Ranger or Handyman, or a Wenger like a Ranger 78, and you'll have a 1 - 2 punch that will handle just about anything you'll come across that doesn't require a specialized or dedicated purpose tool.
Oh, and I have a wrist lanyard on mine that I do use the lanyard ring for; mostly to make it easier to pull it out of the sheath I keep it in on the strap of my EDC bag. Given how the Crunch works, I typically unclip the lanyard from it anyway. But, I can also clip it back on when I want, to keep the tool ready when I need it, while I'm doing various tasks; those are my primary uses for the lanyard, and it definitely helps make the tool easier to use. :tu:
Hi
Long time Cruncher here, date code is 0799 in both handles. So like a classic car, motorbike or other fine piece of equipment the serials all match. :) My wife bought it for me as a Birthday gift several years ago.
Maybe you fellow Crunchers are aware the simple (non-destructive) mod which enables using a power jig-saw blade with your Crunch..........or actually with any locking-jawed plier that has a wire-cutter area.
This link is from my bloghttp://blogericious.blogspot.com/2013/06/leatherman-crunch-saw-mod.html.

I firmly believe the Crunch is perfect in every way.
I firmly believe the Crunch is perfect in every way.
I think that Crunch should contain a different set of scale tools, because it isn't a general standalone multitool. One will have to also use a Surge or somethnig that allready contains files, knives etc. A bit holder and some unique tools would be handy.
I got my Crunch a few days ago. Love this tool. Very smooth action. old square style look to it.
Yet a bit smaller than i thought it would be.
Here it is next to the Grappler. Sorry for crappy Iphone pics.
does anyone else's Crunch do this?
I'm just wondering if this is a bug or a feature...

Never seen that before.
My favorite Leatherman for now.
I carry it in old wave holster with set of bits and an extender. Makes this tool even more versatile.
Nice Crunch Y. Have you got to use it much yet.
Just got my first Crunch. Been eyeing them for a couple years, just hadn't pulled the trigger yet. Was gifted this one :)
Anyway, it's really hard to put down! Lots of little intricacies that fit perfectly together...it's an impressive piece of engineering. I'm sure most of you were already aware, just sharing :)

Nice gift! The engineering comments were my initial thoughts too. I'd say it's no mean feat what they did there. It's a great tool - even if it was just the locking pliers. They honestly work as well as any locking pliers I've used/owned - and at that better than many.
It doesn't suck that it has a great satin SS finish either. Not into glare and shine - yeesh. Yeah, I keep looking for reasons to use it. Definitely one of the best LM has produced - IMO.
Here is mine. EDCed for six plus months now. It has a style to it that I like.

I just ordered a Crunch last night! Can't wait to become a member of the club!
I love my Crunch. I do not use it much, but love it non the less and the design is awesome. Now if they would just make it in Black Oxide.
I came across a Crunch for sale. I have carried other Leathermans in the past and I wasn't crazy about them. This would be carried as a complement to an SAK. Do all of you guys find this more useful as opposed to a traditional Leatherman?

Do all the tools on the Crunch lock?
Yeah the Crunch has the perfect set of tools to cover my MT needs at work. It's just a little small for that job. Will have to stick to my ST300 for that role until they make a SuperCrunch. But I can see the current Crunch as a great glove box or garage tool.Have you put it to the test or just assuming that its too small, because i felt the same way at first. But it's become an essential tool daily. Give it a fair shot bro, you wont regret it

Haven't brought it on the job yet but I've been using the ST 300 everyday for years now and I know that the longer tools def come in handy.
This forum is going to get me in so much trouble with my wife haha I caved and finally got the Crunch...and I LOVE it

Just make sure to complete things on the "honey do list" often. The Crunch is a terrific tool Congrats.
Crunch was the first LM tool I owned and got me into the world of multi-tools. It's a tool i still use regularly and love.
A great piece of engineering and design!
Hey, I wanna join the club too...Any chance we can see the needle nose heads?

After years of lust, I finally have a leather man crunch! I love locking pliers, locking pliers are life locking pliers are love. In my trade I use clamping tools daily, so I'm loving having a pocket pair for when the tool belt is off. I've been carrying the kershaw leek these days and I just had a huge nerd out when I clipped it to my crunch sheath. I always have my mini champ on my keychain so I think I've found my urban nessmuk trio!Congrats to the Crunch it´s a great tool.

Nice one Poncho!
The Crunch doesn't get much love but I'd say its a well loved tool by those who have one. I know I enjoy mine quite a bit. I do really wish they'd BO it :dd:
Got myself a Crunch yesterday. Probably the coolest design from Leatherman yet. Question though, does anyone has the 1/4" drive on his Crunch so tight, that a bit can not be inserted the whole way in? I can only have the bit in for about 2mm, and it is stuck. Any possible adjustment?
I got a Crunch over the weekend. Mrs. TJ saw me open it up and says I have a problem :whistle:those are some interesting tasks :)
I carried it and it is very compact and smaller than it looks in pictures. The pliers work really well for picking up trash and also the wire cutters thought nothing of some fake flowers for a bouquet. I haven't had a chance to play with the bit holder yet.
The 1/4 drive on my Crunch is just tight. It has some grooves/ ribs on the drive's walls, which I am not sure whether they contribute to the tightness. I tried 1/4" bits from different makers (Wiha, Lisle, Apex), none of which can be inserted the whole way through as with regular drive. A 6mm hex bit went in, though loose, because it is smaller than 1/4". At this point, not much loss for me. I do not plan to use this feature.
Just wonder when Leatherman will incorporate the 1/4" drive with a magnet on the handle though? I have a neat idea (I think :D) of a hybrid of ST300 / Surge combo to incorporate the 1/4" drive on the handle. Maybe I should give Leatherman a shout :D

I've got 10 Crunches and none of them have this issue. I never put a bit directly into the hex hole however, I always use a 1/4" extender.

Is that the lighting making it look two toned?
I carry a Vic Soldier with my Crunch and it takes care of the saw requirement and it turns out to be a good combo! :tu:
I plan on carrying my crunch along with either my ST, Rebar, or Pulse at my new job.

Here's a picture of the oldest Leatherman multi tool still in production! (Looks a little different now) :multi: the Leatherman crunch!

I had a very Crunchy weekend at my friend's house in Pittsburgh. They don't have a lot of tools so the Crunch came in very handy.
First, one of the support struts on their deck umbrella was failing but clamping the Crunch in place kept it from sagging while we ate dinner.
And later it was used to remove some very rusted lag bolts on an old set of stairs I was tasked with demolishing.

Welcome to the boards mate. It's not a thumb stud and firm is good.
Shouldn't you be able to use tgat to open the pliers though? Also anyone have any thoughts on a pocket clip for it?I have a hard time using the thumb stud to push open the pliers from a closed poition....does anyone else have this ptoblem? Its very stiff....send back to leatherman to fix?
Welcome to the boards mate. It's not a thumb stud and firm is good.
What do you mean by "thumb stud" Karter?
Basically, the way it's supposed to operate is you pull the two handles apart, fold up the plier head then attach the "floating handle" to the little spur on the plier head (ah - is that what you meant by thumb stud perhaps? The sticky-out bit?).
You can open a Crunch one-handed but it takes a bit of practice like thisimpressive individualclever bugger a few years back
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUOVnL17vMM
I've never seen anyone mod a Crunch with a pocket clip - it wouldn't be that straightforward although anything's technically possible I suppose!
Also have you ever tried to take apart the crunch where tge blades are for a pocket clip? Or perhaps drill and tap the crunch itself for a donor pocket clip?
Pry bars seem to be all the rage, so I thought I'd try a Shard as the starting point. The Shard is nicely made and I can see the benefits.
However, I don't want to carry multiple multitools so I've converted it into a Crunch accessory pry.
Chopped off and MIG welded both sides to give a good grip in the Crunch jaws. I've also increased the bend angle of the head.
As an aside I was very impressed with the metal from which the Shard is made - it's very hard indeed.

Great idea. :tu:
The Kershaw A100 uses a similar concept for it's accessory bit holder (ie clamped in the plier jaws), and it also has a longitudinal groove in the jaws to hold a saw blade (eg hacksaw). There are all sorts of possibilities once you have locking plier jaws with a very tight grip :)
I love the Crunch - I've got 23 of them now and if I see any more at good money I'll buy them too

I suppose as some one who owns 113 PSTs I should be wary of lobbing any rocks towards your glass house :-[ ::) )
My defence is that there are a whole lot of different variants in the PST line, and they aren't making them anymore. ;)

My wife set up a kind of Rube Goldberg cantilevering tripod for this shoot we were on and needed to tighten an adjustment bolt. To my surprise she pulls out a pair of actual, Irwin 7WR, 7 inch Vise-Grips. The funny thing was that the head was too big to get to the bolt. I pulled out my Crunch and was able to tighten it.
:tu: CRUNCH FOR THE WIN :tu:
Mine is on my way to it's new home. I will be mailing in my Crunch member club card.
Do I need a crunch? I have a rebar and wave, and am happy. But I am drawn to the design and enginuity of the crunch and feel like it would be fun to have. Would I use it? I use my regular pliers regularly if not daily, not sure how this different type of grips would translate. (I also carry a knife.)

At the risk of being dubbed an impulse buyer, I just clicked a particularly prominent and inciting button on an online offer that I just by chance happened to come across in what would otherwise be termed some idle surfing with the catchword 'crunch'... :DOn a different forum you may be called an impulse buyer, but here you are feted as a decisive 'Go-Getter'. Guess I should throw mine in here. I've had it between 1 and 2 years- can't remember when I got it. It's carried daily. When I received it, brand new in the package, the jaws had a severe under bite which I had to carefully grind off without generating too much heat.

After fixing it.

I always like to have a saw handy and if I carry the Crunch without also carrying my Tti Charge, I have a saw blade I modified to work in the Crunch. Found a video online for the idea but did it a little different than was shown. Used my Dremel to cut a slot with slanted sides to match the wire cutters of the Crunch. I also cut shallow grooves in the blade where the jaws clamp so it won't slip.
I made a sheath for the blade and carry it this way in the right knife pocket of my Tru-Spec 24-7 pants and shorts.

Hi,
I have chance to get LM Crunch with broken Philips screwdriver. What could I put instead? Whether the Crunch tools are interchangeable with tools from other LMs (which one)?
Hi,Hi zuxbg you need the Philips screwdriver as its got a little nib that locks the tool when it's closed so if you want to replace the Philips you would need to make up something with a nib unless you don't mind it not locking :tu:

Just look at all the pictures I keep posting everyday  :tu:
Yep, I've noticed those the last couple of weeks.
Maybe it's you with your subliminal messages who's responsible for me buying a Crunch ...

No, but... I've been after a plug-in ratchet for a few years now (I think PB Swisstool does one, but it's hard to get) - thanks for the heads up... (scurries off to google...).
Welcome to the forum by the way! :salute:
Edit: Just had a quick swatch - It looks cheaply made to me. Plus it's really just an old style ratchet mechanism, a fairly big one at that, that's been adapted to a 1/4 shank... and they've made a fancy pouch for it. I am dubious to be honest...

Got my Crunch :tu:

Pics tomorrow :tu:

I finally got one. It is smaller than I was expecting but seems capable enough.I was expecting the Crunch to be bigger
That is a fine looking tool Stevey! :salute: Dae yeh like it?

Nice Steve and Alan :tu: :like: :like: The Crunch is surprisingly compact for what it is and even though I haven't carried it much over the years it has always been very capable :like:

I like it, it is definitely a fine piece of engineering :tu:
That's interesting - that's two things that really appeal to me... hmmmm.... I think maybe I should start looking for a Crunch! :2tu:
For the size they can still clamp on to a 1 inch pipeThat's interesting - that's two things that really appeal to me... hmmmm.... I think maybe I should start looking for a Crunch! :2tu:
Definitely ! While they aren't the quickest pliers to deploy, they are probably the strongest pliers around for their package size. And when you need locking pliers then nothing else will do.

For the new Crunch owners you need to learn how to one hand open them. Once you get the hang of it its really easy. Remember practice, pratice, pratice. :D Your thumb may get sore but it is worth it. :D

i've had my Crunch for quite a few years now, can't recall exactly the year I bought it but it was to replace an MT I had temporarily lost.
lately I have noticed seeing them in stores and online for sale and I dont seem to remember paying that much money for mine?
they are all selling for well over $100 but i had it in my mind that i paid closer to $69? and i dont recall it being on sale, i just picked it up at a Lowes.
did the prices for them go up alot over the past couple years?
Well I got it out :D

Nice Ws :like: :like:
I am tempted to get a crunch myself...
1) I need a pair of good and small-sized wise-grips (Pulling nails or broken screws out, or just rusted or rounded off screws, nut/bolts in general.
2) The crunch comes with long and slim screwdrivers (Everything from TVs to lawnmowers have their screws in really deep and hard to reach places.
3) I like how it has a full sized bit driver too
4) I like it's overall compact and easy to carry package
Try putting an ad in the want to buy forum :tu:
The main thing holding me back is its 130 Euro pricetag :(

My Crunch is the same :tu:
But has overtime become a bit less stiff
I don’t mind that the head is stiff
I wouldn’t want them being loose
as that can give the head sideways play
Especially when you try and grip something
That movement could leave marks on what ever
you are trying to grip because of the sideways play

Hi earthman the wrenches from Loki come from Russia
And his price includes the postage well worth getting a set
I got my wrenches from him as well
and it didn’t take too long for delivery :tu:
heat + Squirt PS4 has worked perfectly for every tool that uses these screws. For some reason it has the near perfect dimensions, only issue is the thread locker, but don't force it, since it might be the wrong side. I also use a small wrench from crescent.
Also, I've been looking at used Crunches...they run from $75 in bad condition to $90 in good condition...when a brand new one is $109...is this inflated or are these real values. I feel bad buying a new one when I am instantly going to void the warranty lol.

I got it from Loki mobile:cheers:
Thanks, I have a PS4 and tried it today, it grips great and it's just reminded me, both ends of my pivot will actually turn so I don't have a captive side at all. :dunno:
Will try using some heat tomorrow.

Yes they are definitely on the high price side:iagree:
But they are the only vice grip pliers that fold up this small :tu:

But I wonder if you could still use the original pin
and use a centre punch to peen the pin in place
Hope someone else would be able to help you comis :tu:

Not recommended, u need the pin to be longer initially in order not to damage the frame I believe.
I would try to center punch method first and if that doesn't work then maybe a piece of pin stock would work  of course brass pin stock is a lot less stiff and may bend on you  I would try something definitely before the option of sending it in if it were me :salute:

Yes, its small sized jaws do limit its applications somewhat. A100 has much bigger locking jaws, even bigger that a SuperTool...but non-folding.:like:

Great write up Max :like: :tu::iagree: :tu:
If I ever find A 100 for sale I would definitely buy one
It does look a very capable tool and
would be great to have in the car glove box
Or under the seat of my motorbike

Yes I use the Crunch quite a lot
I have also removed the blade and
replaced it with LM Wave scissors
As we are not aloud to have locking blades in the UK
And scissors are needed more and useful for me
The locking pliers come in very handy when on the bike
Especially if anything comes loose whilst out
It’s not often that I need a normal set of pliers :tu:
Was the swap a direct swap?? Old or newer Wave?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
No there was quite a lot of work to make it fit
As there isn’t much space on the Crunch
I used the newer Wave scissors
Here is the link to my blade / scissor swap

A few weeks ago, I gifted my LM Crunch (build date 07/99) to my 12 Y/O nephew. He's got the multitool affliction something fierce :climber: and the Crunch helped to round out his collection. He especially liked it because it was "an antique". Lol.
A few days ago I got a text from my brother saying my nephew posted a pic of his Crunch on Instagram and he was proud when the guys at Leatherman "liked" his pic. :woohoo:

A little original goodness today :tu:Very nice Crunch! :like:
I’ve spent some time breaking down the anatomy of the Crunch. It’s an amazingly well-designed product. :salute:That is neat...great information. It is a great tool.
Did you know that there are 35 separate parts that make up a Crunch, all stainless steel? Has anyone noticed the 2nd function on the Phillips driver? How about the 2 friction dimples - seen what they do? Did you notice the tool spacers?
The Crunch stands alone in Lethermans’ range as a unique and masterful design, with nothing superfluous. And the little details show the effort the engineers went to when developing it. Just look at the tips of the pliers. What other MT has that level of attention...from any vendor? :dunno:

You know, every time I use this tool I'm surprised in how amazingly capable it is. Most vise grips are poorly machined - good for gripping large objects, but not good at all for precision work. The Crunch is really good at precision work, and can hold tighter than most cheap vise grips of the same size. It's a great tool, and I'm very happy with it.I like the unique toolset, it opens up options so you can mix and match with SAKs without much redundancy.
Charles.

Hi Crunchie and welcome to :MTO: :cheers:Thanks!
But they do feel under spring tensionyes, the spring is really strong now. When you are trying to close it the upper jaw (without the pivot thing) springs back open really fast. Gone are the days of 1 hand closing, its difficult enough with 2 hands, you have to keep a finger pressed on the springy jaw while trying to close it over.

Thanks for the comparison pics Jimny :tu:
Did you put the adjustment screws into the wrong tools? The older one should be more round at the knob, like on mine :pok:
From what I understand, over the years the knob has been changed first and then the writings. Looking at the photos here in the discussion the old models have the knob like mine, you have the new version instead. If anyone can put photos of his knob we can see better.
Hey Jimny, you're right :tu:
I thought the round adjustment knob screw head belongs to the old-style-writing crunch only, but that's not the full story.

I used the Crunch to assist with topping up the ageing boiler ::) (I'm NOT referring to Mrs Surge :twak: )

Does the Removable Bit Driver fit over the Phillips of the Crunch?
No Leathermans bit driver doesn%u2019t fit. But Mr Crunch don%u2019t need it because he can do this!
Does the Removable Bit Driver fit over the Phillips of the Crunch?Yes it fits perfectly
Yes it fits perfectly :whistle::rofl:
I always use a knife to strip wires but since Mr Crunch have a serrated blade I have to use the built in striper. It is surprisingly good. You need to press down, like as if you are trying to cut the wire.

My guess is that the Crunch's Phillips wasn't designed to take the RBD and it fits by accident.
Either way, they mention them as being compatible on their website:
Great, thanks for that, I’m thinking it will make a capable addition to the motorcycle toolkit without adding weight and bulk :-)
Great, thanks for that, I’m thinking it will make a capable addition to the motorcycle toolkit without adding weight and bulk :-)
No, the expectation is that there's a pause in production.
Hello all,
My Crunch has two halves dated around 4 years apart. Normal?
The side the jaws recess into is 0414 while the side the various tools recess into is 0518.
I believe that they only make so many a year because they have to change some of the machines to make it
That is normal for a lot of Leatherman :salute: Kinda cool though :like:
And welcome to :MTO:
Today my wife gave me my birthday gift a day early and she gave me an awesome gift. I'm officially a crunch owner.Great gift, great wife! :like:

0518 in one handle but 0820 in the other handle :tu:Thanks didn't know they made them past 2018
I really want one of these... LM is going to keep making them I hope. I can't find a new one online anywhere it seems. Not really a big fan of the 'bay, but may have to trudge in there and see what's around.
Anyone know of a reputable online retailer that shows these in stock?
Thanks
Well it happened, and glad it did! Finally succumbed to the "C" word: I ordered (and got) one. Just like I've read, it is a marvelously engineered tool, exquisite to look and hold; love the capability of using regular or LTG's bits without adapters! Although small, the file is usable (somewhat aggresive since it is of recent manufacture, 01 and 03/20 dates; I understand that earlier models have a finer cut.), and not dinky like the Rev/Sidekick/Wingman/P series' one.
The SE blade is sharp and functional and, dare to say it, I like it. Also to my liking is the pin vise, and integral cutters. Also nice is the two flat and #1-2 Phillip's drivers, which are the sizes that I most commonly used, and not the plethora found in other Leathermans. My only gripes are easily fixed, as the tools are somewhat floppy and my guess is that by tightening the pivot it will be alright and, the tools and adjusting bolt are "gritty" and might need a bit of oil. :tu:
One question though, is the Crunch the only MT without a can opener!?!?!? :dunno::rofl:
(There is a cameo appeareance of my BOF Wave opening the package.)

Side by side with the Irwin 5wr and the Crunch :woohoo:
The 2 side by side open and closed. Closed, the Crunch is more compact but open the Crunch and the Irwin are very similar in size
(https://i.imgur.com/wZgrJ0vh.jpg)
The jaws do open wider on the Irwin but as seen above the Crunch is much more compact and pocketable
If I had to choose one to keep with me the Crunch would be my choice but if carrying in a backpack the Irwin probably would make sense and of course going by price the Irwin beats the Crunch by a lot :o :D
:nanadance: :nanadance:
Glad that the Crunch came in handy already :woohoo: :like:
Hopefully the plumbing went well :salute: :tu:
This is a great tool for those with a weak grip like me. It won’t be used everytime, all the time, but it’s amazing once you find that perfect job for it!
Absolutely. When you really need locking pliers, only locking pliers will do. ...
Yes Sir, I do ;) :hatsoff:
Geer is my last name so I thought it might be a good play on words :D
Your comment got me daydreaming about whether a C-clamp of the proper dimensions with enlarged "jaws" could substitute for a locking pliers.
Nice yeah we follow each other on Instagram. I agree the Crunch is a tool not used often but very helpful when used
Great to know  what is your Insta name  it is hard to keep up with people but I do like to know the peeps who are from MTO for sure :salute: you can PM if you don't want it out in public or pit it here and you might get a fee followers :D
What's up guys and gals! Let my first post on this website be one of thanks and pure gratitude. You start to feel like a weirdo after a bit when you think you're alone geeking out on hand tools. Then you discover a whole community of weirdos, and you feel just a little less weird lol
So thank you for existing! Haha
Ok so I just got caught up on all 82 pages of this thread lol and I've come to 2 conclusions.
1) I've officially taken the red pill without even realizing it. The rabbit hole goes much deeper than I had anticipated haha
2) I need to move to a region where these tools are indigenous. After seeing all the woodsy outdoors posts, I can only imagine that these things just sprout from the ground somewhere! Lol is there a particular mating season in which to hunt them??
Thanks for following :hatsoff::cheers:
I may also have a Leatherman Crunch Video uploading as we speak  :woohoo:

Thanks Steve!
You have inspired me to add knives into some of my photos. I just don't have the selection that you have.....yet !
It would be a shame to retire it :salute: if they ever did I would hope that they replaced it with an updated version or a bigger sized one 8) :like:

Enjoyed the video Poncho and love the accent too. My recent one is from 2011.
I wanted a Crunch when I first laid eyes on it. I finally got one then a month or so ago picked up a second. I was so stoked and immediately put it to work.
It was never discontinued :salute: only out of stock for a while :cheers:Thanks for the reply.
I don't have any idea on prices for the UK though
Thanks for the reply.
I contacted Leatherman UK, (aka Whitby), and they have stated "We regret that the Leatherman Crunch is now sold out and discontinued here in the UK we are not aware that this has been re-released for sale." But on YouTube there are various videos showing the Crunch is back.
Crunch forever!! :like:
HI guys. Been looking at your Crunch pictures. Very nice! I use one at work almost every day. It has seen a lot of light use and occasional hard use. Doesn't look new anymore, but still functions perfectly. Got a little too close to the welder a time or two.

Vari,
what tool is the bit driver out of and which clip is that?
Vari,
what tool is the bit driver out of and which clip is that?
cnlson the clip is from a Kick just as Poncho65 stated. :tu:
The bit driver is from a Surge Gen 2(only version I could get). The nail notch flat was ground flat, enlarged the lock slot and profiled the outer pivot area. The part where the locking pliers adjustment screw is, a notch was machined, allowing the handle to close up more. Added a counter-sunk a magnet to keep it closed since removing the phillips screwdriver which was keeping it closed before.
I would be hip for a Crunch Challenge some time, if we could get the critical mass needed for a badge.
Awesome work on the Crunch. I wish it were a drop in as I'd be all over that.
Terrific mod :like:
It being the first LM with a locking tab type system could be why  just theorizing here and don't know for sure

I'm considering buying a 2nd one. You know - just because. A few months ago they could not be found anywhere, including the Leatherman website. #scary
I did honestly phreak out just a little when I wanted to grab a Crunch several months ago and they were not to be found anywhere on the interwebs including the Leatherman website. I thought they may be gone for good, and since the Crunch is prolly not a huge seller I could see that happening.
Time for a Crunch Plus!:iagree: :gimme:
A little bit bigger, squeeze in a saw, and I think it’d be the new king of multitools!
I have wanted a bigger Crunch for years :ahhh
Maybe LM will finally break down and make that happen :dd: :like:
It's not that usual to capture a Crunch during its transformation :drink:
I think the earliest might be 0999.I have 0799 / 1299 so I would think 0799 / 0799 is possible. Or maybe 0799 / Blank
Never heard of any without date codes.
Reporting.Thank you

That’s a great collection, but they need a leader to keep them in line. One (Mr) Crunch to rule them all :)

What do you like about Crunch ?Being a locking pair of pliers
Not a bad sickness to have  :rofl:Sure it is :MTO:
Congrats :woohoo: :like:
Still one of my favorite MT. Surge and Crunch if I had to give up all others.
:iagree: They are what I have on my work tool belt. Powerful combination.

Thank you for the warm welcome Poncho!
Can you tell me what wrench exactly do I need to find (because it is not standard to my knowledge and I feel lost)? Do I need to heat the screws before I try to tighten them again? I read that they may be factory treated with loctite.
I will post some photos after work of my awesome Crunch :woohoo:
I do use a Knipex Cobra XS : it works perfectly for this job
Never can have too many.
Several months ago, the Crunch disappeared off of the Leatherman website and was not available anywhere to purchase. Though it did eventually make a glorious return, you never know when they will disappear forever. #juice So the time to hoard is now.
Says me. :tu:
I have not had the need to adjust any of my tools yet, but, do you need to use two wrenches or does one suffice? Oddly I have two of the Knipex variant you reference. I see the parse wrenches on the popular auction site - seems expensive for what it looks like, however, having the right tool for the job can make all the difference.

so i have the wrenches. you might be able to get it done with knipex or other cobra pliers but you run the risk of damage, if not very careful, while gripping the screws.
the wrenches fully grip each of the splines and give you a non marring way to adjust them. And yes you need one on each side of the chicago screw. I have used the wrenches 2 or maybe three times. latest was to swap the pivot on a crunch to add a pocket clip
i bought a second to rest in the drawer while I use the other
We might if you didn't have an extra in your drawer   ;)
Otherwise, carry on :salute: :D
Thanks! I will likely but a set at some point.if you were nearby (south dakota) i'd be happy to loan you mine if you had a need.
I too have an extra NIB to have just in case. Completely irrational, but, I am sure no one hear would judge me poorly. :)
Welcome to :MTO: Cynan
Excellent pic :like: and a fine choice for a carry :woohoo: :like:
The Crunch and Micra are 2 of the longest produced tools by Leatherman that haven't really went through any kinds of major overhauls or redesigns, that is for sure a testament to their design :salute: :like: :like:
Received my Crunch today and am very happy with it. Always loved locking pliers since I was a kid and to get one this cool just floats my boat :D
Had one of the original Micras for a long time before it was lost (sad times). I replaced it with various other similar tools over the years but nothing really stuck and eventually bought a newer version of it.
Recently I've wanted to get something a big bigger for when I'm away and I was switching between a Wave+, Surge and ST 300.. the latter winning that race as I love the more vintage style looks and wanted something more heavy duty.
However since I have my replacement Micra I released that the only tool I'd really be gaining that I'd use in any serious capacity are the pillars and whenever you use pillars you can't beat locking ones so the choice was made. Still I might pick up a ST300 at some point to complete the set! [ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]
Welcome to :MTO: Cynan :hatsoff:
...and congrats on your new Crunch :like:
Don't overlook the hidden bit driver under the adjustment screw :pok:
But as Poncho mentioned, you may try one of the old originals as well ;) They are sleek and more compact. And super reliable.
Being in the UK it’s really hard to get hold of one it seems. eBay has nothing knife related. I’d love a PST but it seems a Bond is the closest I get get easily.
Definitely not overkill for a car kit :salute: :like: :like::cheers:
Also, welcome to :MTO: :cheers:Thanks a mill Poncho.

What's the story on these ?
Imagine if they move it to the Retired page tomorrow and these are last fifty ever made! That’s pretty much what ended up happening. 🫣
Is the Crunch the tool that’s had the longest production run? 24 years so far, I think.
That’s pretty much what ended up happening. 🫣
They retired the Crunch as we all know, right after you made this comment.
