Well tomorrow is the day, I have been steadily gaining weight since I moved from VT to GA. Not being as active as I use to be, and working a job that is not as labor intensive....I have slipped so to speak. So in an effort to regain some of my former self, and to fix better in clothes that I would rather not get rid of I need to get rolling. Bike hasn't been rode in like 2 years or more, I figured it would need some TLC but all I needed to do was tighten the handlebars (the got wacked or something and was not centered). The breaks needed tweaking and the derailer rubbed on the chain. Half an hour later, with a good washing down and it looks good.
This is one of the Mongoose bikes they made just before they started selling them full throttle in Wal-Mart, it's the best bike I have ever had and am I glad I still have it to this day. May it help me, and see me through the *ahem* tough times ahead.
David
BTW, the tools I used were the Gerber CoolTool and the new Zilla

David

I like that Cool Tool!
Also, good luck with riding. Hopefully you can regain your "He-man-esque" figure I've seen portrayed before :)
-
they,re great those cool tools, shame about the cheesy name ;D
good luck to you mate, after a while you,ll kick yourself for ever being off the bike for so long :)
-
Nice to see you taking charge Dave!
That Cool Tool is pretty sweet too. Looks like it got the job done well enough. What tool are you planning to take riding with you?
Def
-
I've got the cool tool riding up under the seat via some velcro straps, I might strap something like a MP600 somewhere else to compinsate for the lack of certain tools I may need while out on the road.
The cooltool had a velcro strap that allowed it to do this, but I have since lost it and have to use velcro cable ties I use to keep the spaghetti straight behind the computer.

Whatever works!
I have often thought about contacting On Scene Tactical about making a permanent mountable Kydex bike rig for carrying tools. I think that would be pretty cool!

that would be cool, mind you it would leave half of the tool exposed to the elements and not every tool is as stainless as vic,s stuff ;)
-
True- I would only have the tool on the bike while riding though. And while inclement weather has hit me before (freak snowstorm in July one year, while I was about 15 miles from home, wearing a T shirt and shorts) while biking, I usually don't bother if the weather is too bad. Of course here it can rain any time with little or no notice, but other than a bit of wet I think it would be ok.
I need tools on my bike often enough that I would think it worthwhile even if I have to clean and oil a tool when I get home!
Def
-
bet that was cold ;D
instead of the kydex stuff (ohh so cool though it is ;D) i use a lot of topeak stuff on my bikes to carry spare tubes, tools and all the other odds an sods that i always carry...
http://www.topeak.com/2007/road.php#wedges
-
Yeah- biking shorts aren't really all that weatherproof... and that was in the days when wearing biking shorts didn't make folks vimit like they would toay! :P
But, it was a good incentive to ride like hell on the way home to keep from freezing!
Those are cool looking bags- I assume since they are from Topeak they are good quality too?

i crashed at about 40mph and fractured 2 ribs and broke a third, but the bags were barely scuffed!
so yeah pretty well built ;)
-
Congrats on joining the folds of riders !!! Mongooses non dept store bikes are still good stuff. I never saw the Gerber except in pics,it must have dropped off the radar fairly quickly. I like the idea of a Kydex rig to carry some essential tools..I need to look into it.

I feel your pain..I did similar back in May, broken ribs are no fun..but my scuffing was called road rash!
-
especially when the doctors say the magic words ''there nothing we can do for broken ribs'' ::)
still i ended up, chating up a very good looking red headed nurse, ;D did,nt get anywhere though ::) ;D

I broke 3 ribs a couple years ago... one thing that helped me was anytime I had to cough or sneeze I would hold a soft pillow fairly tight against my chest. It seemed to help a bit. The first time I sneezed though I passed out from the pain :)

they do hurt a mite, don,t they ;D

You folks in the UK are grandmasters of understatement ;D
I didn't get a rehead to chat up.but I did have a lovely young blonde thing on night shift that kept my coffee cup filled..oh how I do love coffee !!!!

David, what type of riding do you plan? If I was going to be more on paved roads,I'd switch out the tires to a more of a hybrid tread,I found the knobbies wear me out on pavement.
-
Half and half, I live on a dirt road and ride that half the way and then paved the other half, about a mile round trip.
David
-
In that case you're best off sticking with the knobbies...and PM winging it's way to you

David
i found this a good compromise on my hybrid...
http://www.evanscycles.com/product.jsp?style=13291
good wear resistance and grip, on both road and trails (not full blown downhill racing though ;D) and there not to power sapping on the road, so they make a pretty good compromise :)

With Dave biking, and me kayaking, who is going to keep up on our TV watching and stop the couch from being stolen? :D

Put a flotation collar around the couch and have the best of both worlds ;D As for the TV...oh well it's all re-runs.

I have been looking for a large enough Ziploc baggy to put my portable DVD player in for long kayak trips!
Def
-
Considering my run of luck lately,I'd need a Ziploc baggy for myself, and this from someone that's planning on a whitewater rafting trip on the New River this autumn.

Well two days now, and boy do my legs hurt....this is not going to be easy, biking in the morning is a must, due to the darn GA heat I nearly had what felt like heat stroke after biking after I came home from work (5pm). Won't be doing that again anytime soon.
David
-
Hang in there David..you'll get past the sore legs. When I got back into cycling strong,I durned near overdid it,until I figured I ought to pace myself.

David
just take it slow and easy mate, it takes a while for your lung,s and muscle groups to adapt after a lay off.
stick with it your doing yourself and the planet a world of good by cycling :)
if after a few weeks your still having probs you might need to get some riding/fitness/medical advice but for now the burn is normal ;D
hope that did,nt come across too patronising?
-
Also, if eat a banana, and drink a litre of water with a tiny pinch of salt, that can help you stop seizing up after a ride.
and if you have a cold shower as soon as u can after a ride, it,ll prevent the lactic acid built up in your legs and other muscles :)
-
Been taking the cold shower, simply due to the heat outside :)
David
-
I like to walk around the yard a couple times, after a long strenous rides,to cool down and relax the muscles.

heats a killer, our weather over the pond is all over the place at the moment, one day it 26 degrees and very humid the next day its 16 degrees and pissing down with rain ::)
-
Micky..I've been seeing the news reports on the weather there. Maybe you should take up kayaking,Def could give you some pointers ;D Stay safe, and stay dry.
-
:D :D :D
it would probably be the quickest way around ;D
most of the flooding is north of me (i live in kent) but there are a lot of people having a tough time at the moment
extreme weather is i supose, going to be a common feature in the future, this is probably just a taster, so head for the hills and grab as many sak,s and multi,s as you can carry ;) ;D
-
I live in southeastern Ohio, and we've been going through a drought, unless we see some good rains soon, the upcoming brush fire season will be one for the record books. Most firefighters here carry a multi of some kind in their gear.I can make some safe bets those multis are going to be making some field repairs on equipment in this rugged terrain

Got the package Bison, thanks. Definatly have to give this baby a work out!

You're more than welcome. Put 'er through her paces!

Playing around with this thing makes me think twice about wengers again. Fix and finish is awesome and the functionality is ingenious. Vic is more of a traditionalist and Wenger is more tendy-with the times :)
Go Wenger :multi:
David
-
I agree 100% that Wenger is by far more innovative. I especially like the detachable wrench, and the fact it can be re-attached to the knife in the open position for better grip.In fact the wrench is a quality well made piece of gear.

piccies ;D

Here is some information about it:
The Pocket Mountain Bike Tool by Wenger has a large blade; chain rivet setter, removable 5mm Allen wrench; removable tool for adjusting spokes, 10mm hexagonal key for nuts, screwdriver for slotted and Phillips head screws; Phillips head screwdriver; patented locking screwdriver, cap lifter, can opener. 3 3/8" long when closed. Red handles.
David
I love the way the wench gives you more leverage when turning the chain tool :)
And of course some pics:
-
Last few.....
Sorry for the crappy pics, it's the lighting and the focus. If I take more time with the macro function and take it where I have some more light I can get some better ones....for the review of course ;D
David
-
David, your camera is doing a much better job than mine ever could. The reallly good thing about the Wenger is that it's easily slipped into the pocket to take along on the ride.
-
they do look pukka, i,ve been contemplating one for quite awhile now ::)

Makes the Gerber CoolTool look lame :P

Y'all have some mighty peeculiar recreations up thar.Us hillbillies ain't got nowhere that level of sophisticaytion.Mrs. Bison56 has a friend who's husband is a retired RCMP detachment commander up Nfld. way.kept inviting us to come up for cod kissing..yep y'all have some mighty peeculiar recreations
-
Don't lump us all together- Newfoundland is an interesting place. For example, this is a real town:
It's not hard to find, go to Conception Bay and hang a looie... If you hit Cox's Cove, you've gone too far, and if you see Placentia Bay you haven't gone far enough.
Of course if you find yourself in Blow Me Down or Come-By-Chance, well you might as well stay there...
Def
-
Well that's just about the all time Grand Champion of place names...ain't no way I'd kiss a cod in a place with a name like that!!! Beats anything I ever encountered down this way..Pennsy has Intercourse, and Bird-in Hand, and few miles from me in Ohio is Knockemstiff.
BTW..stole the pic ;D
-
In Michigan, there's a town named Climax. There's a sign on the highway that says "Climax Next Exit..." I keep thinking I should get off there...
-
now why can,t i live in a place like that?? :D

Don't forget about intercourse, PA. ;D

More to the point..what kind of tool would you use to fix it?

You know... I've got a picture of the perfect tool to fix this discussion... but, since we're in a public forum I've decided against posting it :)
Let's just say it's got a couple of attachments to increase it's useability :) Technically, I think that classifies it as a multi-tool!
