I will start with a rather poor picture of mine

At the top...
My copy of Lofty Wisemans survival tool
A cheap but useable Machete
Stick chopper with micarta and brass handle
Billhook with micarta and brass handle
Billhook 'work in progress' handle
Billhook With a typical rat-tail tang
A couple of billhooks/slashers with socket handles

Feel free to add your own pictures/comments

More common than the machete here in Queensland, Australia is the Cane Knife (sugar cane)

stock photo, mine is over at my mum's place at the moment.

Lol

I got 2 vintage billhooks a few years back. Awesome weapons tools.

Is it true that is where they originate from? I'm sure I read someplace the hook was often used in battles against armour!! Where the hook would simply slice through the steel.
What a tool - respect.  :salute:

I don't feel like going to the shed now. :P I'll try to post some pics tomorrow or on the weekend. A few old sickles, a scythe, a machete, a few old axes, ...

Other way around really.  The hook aids in taking off TREE limbs, not human. ;)  The billhook was used as a medieval weapon (England especially) but started off as an agricultural tool that was pressed into the role, rather than being designed for it.  Later you did get 'billhooks' that were purpose made weapons, but it's roots will always be more benign.

I'd love to find one of those on a car boot sale or something like it. The ones I find on ebay are always in the $200 region or more and that's a bit more than I'm willing to pay. ;)

From $75 to $425 based on the condition and if they have all the parts/sheath. Currently listed two with sheath BIN prices for them are $320 and $425. (without shipping)

I will say that whomever designed the folding machete needed a good kick up the rear, the handle is so square it gives you blisters if you just look at it sideways. ::)

Oh, and before I forget, this is my billhook.

That thing gives me the shivers.
What a truly hideous looking tool - it reminds me of something they would have used when they hung/drawn/quartered people.
I can't actually think of anything scarier, except for maybe a scythe  :to:

And of course when I do remember to take the pic it 's already pitch black outside.

A quick pic of the sickles and scythe for Nick. The sickles could use some derusting treatment as they haven't been used in ages and it shows. :-\

BTW, if you own a scythe, how do you sharpen it? Around here it's been customary to use a hammer to hammer the edge back into shape. YOu'd have a special chair with a small ambus like thingy in the front and you would thin the edge with the hammer and then sharpen it with a sharpening stone but not like a knife, you'd use a special movement you must have seen in old movies if you'r enot from the country. ;)

Found the pic of the chair.

Thats how they used to do it here aswell,

Tiny little Anvil thingy used to fit on top of a fence post and you would hammer the edge in to being,
this would form a sharp edge and work harden the steel at the same time so you would have a tough blade with a hardened edge

Title: Re: Show us your Billhooks, Slashers, Machetes
Post by: tosh on November 15, 2013, 07:12:38 PM
God I hate the look of that scythe - can you imagine what that would do if swung in the wrong direction....... :ahhh

As for sharpening, I used to have a scythe - that's where my hatred comes from!! To sharpen I used the cigar shaped sharpening stone as shown to me by the elderly gentleman from whom I purchased it from.

Just had a horrible thought - the damn scythe may still be at my parents home  :ahhh

I'll try and find my billhooks tomorrow - they are hidden away in the shed!!

Can you believe my mother let me use a scythe to clear a massively overgrown garden when I was 7 years old?  What was she thinking?

Still, I do have the standard number of fingers, toes and legs.  Oddly, so does my brother.

Funnily, being taught to chop kindling by my dad at an even younger age doesn't seem as bad as being let lose with a full sized scythe.

Well, with a proper scythe, if there's noone else around, you can hardly harm anyone with it... I mean how can you possibly hit yourself with a scythe?

Hey sparky, that's fantastic.

I think there is something honourable in hard work. I really do. But I bet anyone not conditioned would pay dearly the day after.

As previously mentioned, I did/do  have scythe and remember attempting to cut the meadow at my parents home years ago - it certainly wasn't as easy as those chaps made it look, and yes, I was stiff the next day...only a little

I got home to my parents for Christmas to find two billhooks with no edge whatsoever - I think they'd be better at bludgeoning wood into submission rather than splitting it. Took it upon myself to slightly remedy the situation but I'd left most of my sharpening gear at my house.

I then found a hand powered bench grinder in a shed and have sort of managed to put a reasonable edge on them, you wouldn't want to draw it across your hand but it's far from shaving sharp! The problem is holding the billhook at a sensible angle, it's fine when the handle is on the left but swap the handle on to the right and the grinder's handle keeps hitting it whenever it turns

Hey ho, I think an electric bench grinder but do as a future Christmas present, if I remember next year!

Well my grandfather made a scythe for me when I was 4 or 5 and I used to help him cutt the grass. He also gave me an axe where he made the handel to fitt me so I could help him when he was cutting lumber in the woods or firewood. I also have the standard number of fingers, toes and legs oddly enough.

Wow!  Where can I get one of those?

Dr. Arvin Sese (https://www.facebook.com/groups/177563835718142/) here in Philippines makes these by hand. Most of them are made from ball bearing steel but others are made from leaf springs. The balance and weight are perfect, I expected no less but still found myself astonished when I held them. The guy definitely deserves his reputation as one of the best bladesmiths for working tools in Philippines. That is saying a lot when you consider that everyone here has a machete and that his are the favored blades for the military here, Jungle Survival Instructors, and even a few survival "celebrities". It's a shame his grips aren't as nice as his blades though.

Dmanuel,
I love the look of those  :tu:

I agree wholeheartedly, they aren't all mirror polish and perfect finish but they look like a tool that will last me for many years to come. Plus, there is just something about the rough around the edges look when it comes to handmade blades!

Edit:
FWIW, he ships to Europe all the time. He just sent out a whole batch (25+) for a French SRT team. And they are quite reasonably priced for handmade pieces from high quality steel. Around $40 for the Parang and JEST (Jungle Environment Survival Training for US/Philippine soldiers) Bolo and around $25 for the Sundang.

Two fixed blades and another picture of the Sundang can be found here. (http://forum.multitool.org/index.php?topic=7563.msg862167#msg862167)

Title: Re: Show us your Billhooks, Slashers, Machetes

One thing I did find out on that trip is that the handle shape is pretty poor.  Far too fat, far too round, so it had a bad habit of twisting around when in use.  With that in mind I set to with a wood rasp and sand paper and gave the handle a bit more "shape", much better now.  Also the sheath is very nice, but I don't see the need for the second strap, the top one I've got done up holds the golok perfectly securely all by itself.

Thanks ! It's a U.S. army machete made by the Ontario Knife company.

It's seen a lot of use for clearing a nuisance invasive tree we have around here (Buckthorn). It got a little rusty when my garage roof leaked a few years ago. I cleaned it up recently and sharpened it. It takes a wicked sharp edge.

When I was looking at the Condor range I definitely considered that one. :tu:

I like it but hate that it's convexed...... :(

You don't like it because its convexed?
I thought a convexed edge was best

Nice one Steve

It probably is but I don't want the best on these kind of tools. I want something I can hit a few licks with a mill smurf file and keep going instead of relearning how to sharpen it. Always have a file around the farm or in my gear.

Just watched those videos of the guy with the scythe. Wow he is good! I've used my grandpas many years ago but that guy would run or cut circles around me.    :D

Oddly enough I've already attacked my Condor with a file (after accidentally attacking a stone with the Condor) and found the steel pretty soft and easy to work on.  I'd even go so far as to say that compared to a knife it's too soft, but as a machete then I think it's OK.

I've no idea what this tool is called - I found it in my shed/workshop, I guess it belonged to my father though i don't remember him ever using it. The balance seems very "off" to me, but perhaps there is a technique to using it that i don't know.

Yours looks like a good heavy one to me Mate  :tu:

I have just found this artical that you might find interesting Eamo
Looks like yours is a Devon Billhook,  :salute:

Billhooks are a tool for cutting or splitting green wood; they are something between a knife and an axe. They were traditionally used to coppice thin wood for animal feed and bedding, split hazel for making hurdles, cut fencing stakes, thatch roofs, make rough furniture and cut thin firewood, such as smurfs which were used in bread ovens. In continental Europe they are a traditional tool for pruning the grape vines that were needed for wine-making. The hooked end makes it easier to catch cut pieces of brush and flip them in the right direction.

Medieval Italian using a billhook (Photo from billhooks.co.uk)

As the most widely available edge tool the billhook would also have been the principle weapon of self-defence for the medieval English peasant, and is often said to have been the main weapon used in the English civil war. Big orders were placed by the government as late as World War I, where they were used to clear scrub and cut stakes for trench construction.

These days, volunteers on OCV tasks use billhooks mainly for trimming the side branches of hedge-laying stakes (snedding) and for hedge-laying itself. The billhook is a very versatile tool though perhaps one of the more tricky to use for us volunteers with weak 21st century arm muscles and not having had too much practice. Quite a lot of strength is required to use one effectively for significant lengths of time, and there is a risk of doing yourself or someone else serious injury with the sharp blade. The main risks are cutting your other hand, hitting your legs or cutting your fingers fishing one out of a bag of tools.

In days gone by there were thousands of different patterns of billhooks used in different parts of the British Isles and in Northern Europe and other parts of the world, including those that were colonised by Northern Europeans. In many cases this would match the local style of hedge-laying, though it would be hard to say which came first since people would pass down both the tools and the technique.

Although there are patterns named after many of the English counties, in fact, there was probably a different style being made by each village blacksmith. They eventually gave way to small manufacturers who made tools in larger numbers, perhaps with forges powered by waterwheels. There might only be a few of these tool makers in each county, so the tradition continued. In the 19th century, mass production took over from small manufacturers, and production of bladed tools took place in cities like Sheffield. Farming was still not mechanised, and a large number of people still lived and worked in the countryside so there was still great demand for hand tools in the countryside and with different areas requiring different styles, the big toolmakers produced catalogues boasting of hundreds (and sometimes thousands) of patterns of billhook they had available.

As demand for hand tools dropped off in the latter part of the 20th century fewer different patterns remained available. Nowadays, choice is quite limited if you’re looking for a new tool rather than a museum piece which you might pick up at a market or on eBay. But you will still certainly be able to find these general patterns:

7 different patterns of billhook

It’s sometimes still useful to know which is which. On OCV tasks that’s normally because we’ve managed to lose one and we want to know who saw it last. Or sometimes we end up with a bit of particularly tough bit of hedgelaying that means we have to find out who’s got a Yorkshire billhook – the only one that can be used two-handed.

Thanks Sparky, very interesting, a lot of history and technique behind my billhook so :)
I had always thought a billhook was a sickle style tool didn't know there were different styles. I get what the article says about 21st century muscles too, theres weight in mine, i'd definitely find it hard to keep using it for a couple hours, let alone a full day.

I've sharpened it using a file and my lansky puck even though i can't see myself using it and i think i'll sand it at some stage to shine it up :)

Slashers
Well the top one is definitely a slasher, as you can see there are a lot of different patterns
At the bottom there is a Yorkshire pattern on the end of a long stick, unless someone tells me different I’m calling that a slasher as well

Along the top next to the billhook are my stick choppers
Some people have said they are called that because of the ’stick tang’ (I call it a rat tail tang) but I don't think that is right.
In the old days when everyone in town used to have a coal fire you needed kindling to get the fire started, everyone owned one of these to chop up the kindling
I can remember as a little kid visiting my Grandad and ‘getting paid’ to split scrap wood with a blunt stick chopper  :D

very nice selection there - i've never come across stick choppers before - growing up, an axe/hatchett was what we used, and still use for kindling.

this'd be my version of a slashhook/slasher -

I may be wrong but I believe that sort of hook is not used for mowing, but for gathering in and squaring up sheaves that have already been cut.

Hey Zoidberg, is there a machete/billhook badge in the works yet?

Sorry for the late reply, I'm slowly catching up on the unread threads.

As far as I know there isn't anything atm. I don't mind applying for one though. You after a user or collectors badge?

It would also appear I haven't posted a pic in this thread yet.

User's badge, of course. I don't collect them, I accumulate them, and I beat the hell out of them and sharpen them with a mill file.  There's nothing collectible about my machetes.

My machetes.
Top to bottom:

1. A cheap Chinese Bolo made out of unknown stainless steel.  Heavy enough for chopping, but it doesn't hold an edge.

2. The Fiskars Machete Saw. It's got a concave edge that is only good for hacking through grasses or hedge trimming, but the saw works very well so I use it mostly for the saw.

3. Tramontina jungle style machete that is over 20 years old. Scary sharp and the one I still use most often for cutting green wood up to about wrist diameter.

4. Tramontina Bolo with hardwood handle that I use for heavy cutting jobs greater than wrist diameter, but it is a general purpose machete that can even be used for digging. It has taken a lot of abuse over the years.

5. Tramontina 12 inch machete / camp knife. Brand new. I've sharpened it but have not used it yet.

I find the Woodman's Pal is more like a hatchet than a machete.  They leave the toe of the blade unsharpened so you won't cut yourself if you hit your boot, and also, so you can use it somewhat as a pick when digging.  Most people I know who have one ended up sharpening the blade to the end because they find it more useful that way when used for its primary job which is chopping. I'm still undecided about sharpening it to the end of the blade as that is a modification that can not be undone.

I am leaning in that direction as well.  I'm also thinking it needs to be sharpened more towards the handle too. They leave a lot of undeveloped real estate on those blades.  I would guess, that because it is intended as a military survival tool, the designers wanted it to be safe to use.  No sense in surviving a helicopter crash only to then cut your hand open.

Necro quote/reply

So you start with a convexed edge, a well-supported edge suited to purpose - what prohibits you from sharpening it with a file?

Sadly I find heat treatments and grind angles&types more interesting than naked women (for instance), and currently interested in the experience of users vs the theories.......

I have a huge downer on hollow grinds going on.....

I am a long time machete user.  If you read my review of the Fiskars Machete Saw you'll see why you don't want a concave edge on a machete. http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,64206.0.html  In the review I commented that the concave edge caused the machete to turn in the branches, splitting them along the grain, instead of severing them outright.  This meant more work for me as it took multiple swings with the machete to cut through thin branches that a proper edge would have cleaved in a single swing.
I do sharpen my machetes with a file in the field and they hold an edge very well when it's done right.

This explains the convex edge fairly well.  http://site.baryonyxknife.com/blog/2014/08/11/why-convex-edges-are-awesome-its-not-why-you-think/

Can't open the 2nd link from work, will check later......

Can you just clear up (see highlighted) - you mention you don't want a concave edge, which is a hollow grind.......?
Title: Re: Show us your Billhooks, Slashers, Machetes
Post by: Alan K. on May 28, 2016, 12:49:57 AM
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grind

The edge is so narrow that instead of compressing fiber in front of it and biting into the wood until it had cut completely through a green branch, it would cut only as deep as the height of the edge where the shoulders of the edge would catch preventing it from cutting any deeper, and then the momentum of the cut would turn the blade into the grain and split the green branches I was trying to sever.  The bite of a machete is different than the bite of an axe.  With an axe you want to remove chunks but with a machete you want to slice through something with a swing that ideally would end on the other side of the branch you are cutting.  If cutting thicker branches with a machete, you know you're not getting through them in one swing, but in your mind's eye you picture the blade going through in order to have the correct swing.  You are mentally anticipating the follow through on the other side of a branch in order to put that cut where you want it. This is similar to when you think about your golf swing where you're picturing the head of the club going through the ball and continuing around your body.  When the concave edge of the Fiskars turned into the grain and split the branches I was trying to cut instead of severing them, it completely threw off my game.

I had half a chance to use my new CRKT Halfachance on some palm fronds today.  It's a good cutter, and very comfortable in the hand.  Not quite as sharp as I'd like, but the factory edge from CRKT is very good right out of the box and will do for some time.

It's a beast of a hunk of steel, I find the handle comfortable. You are right about the sheath Tony, like all my other Condors the sheath is superb and puts many other expensive brands sheaths to shame.

So far Condor haven't let me down and though there prices have increased a bit over the last few years that seems to be coming with innovation

man from "ye good  olde days".

Some specs:
    Total length: 430 mm.
    Weight: 525 g (knife only).
Blade: length 240 mm, width 46 mm, thickness 4,2 mm.
Edge: 34° for chopping, 25° at the base for finer work.
Steel: Carbon steel 80CrV2, 59 HRC

My ugly Tramontina in its adoptive rural Kentucky habitat.
I redid the edge, rounded off the handle a little, filed the handle half of the blade square for scraping and the tip half round for use as a draw knife, and rounded off the tang of the blade where the edge stops so I can choke up for finer work if I need to. Aside from that all I really ever do with it is hit it with a file or a coarse stone when it goes dull and use the snot out of it.
The X burned into the handle is my mark, which I put on my tools if they are in a position to get loaned out so I can identify mine from others', and as a point of pride in the tools I modify (I don't put my mark on it unless I'm happy with it).(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170606/6beb7bcfd1f51395d040b0d1374e6780.jpg)

Speaking of slashers, I've just taken over a very neglected allotment which needs a lot of clearing before it can be used for anything. :ahhh
I've been looking at the "Large grass/weed slasher" shown below.
Has anyone used this type of slasher before?

Yes, though not in quite a few years now.  IIRC it's all in the shoulder rather than the wrist.  They work rather well once you've got a rhythm going.

:like:  I have a similar saw by Orsa--it's huge; with an at least 30 inch blade. The local power company used it long before the adoption of powered saws to clear the lines.

I'm working on this old Collins brush axe we've had around the farm many years. Trying to get it sharpened up to use.

This was made by a fellow that was on Forged in Fire. His crest is the circles in the grip. I can't remember his name but he's from here in Alberta. Machette hatchet.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191119/6c8c4987b20baef6465c1dcd36da3704.jpg)

Try slashing with one of these. Rescued from our Saskatchewan barn.
