This will be really funny to watch! The explorer is an amazing SAK and the one I want to love but I just can't. It's just over the border in thickness and it's just as much.. I changed out the scissor for the saw and hit the sweetspot just right.
Might sound redicoulous but that small different in thickness did the trick. I have had 3 explorers and modded one, gave one away and used one to farm parts.
The one I giftet I actually used the other day and my feelings are the same, wonderful tool but a tad to thick
But I will joyfully watch this challenge
[It's not failure if you learn something from it]
I went for it and grabbed one, cheap, off of eBay.
Be here in a few days...

Almost to the launch time here...the Indiana Jones of SAKdom! This is going to be a way for me to get close to mine. I've tried to bond with this pattern, but haven't been able to yet.
Sorry to disappoint Barry, but I feel the same. I prefer a SAK that can be carried in my coin pocket easily. The explorer is just not one of them. I think a custom is in my future, as I love and really need a magnifying glass at my age.
I prefer the Huntsman, but the magnifying glass has made me look at the Explorer withnewold eyes.

Can I join with this 80's model?
At 4 layers, the Explorer is thicker than I normally carry, but I am looking forward to this challenge to see if I really notice the difference.
It sounds like you really want one of the discontinued Woodsman. The 5 layers make it bigger than I like for edc, but nice for camping or more rural travel.

Day 1
The first order of business was determining if the Explorer fit in my pocket organizer without removing the lighter. It is a tight fit, but does fit as I normally carry it which makes me very happy.
I like to occasionally change the color of the lanyards on my flashlights and knives and used the Explorer for cutting the paracord.

I'm going to have to bow out of this challenge, but I will be rooting for you all on the sidelines.
Day: 01Thats a neat project. I do like at the paracord on your walking stick!
Off and running!
Used the scissors today (boy did I miss me scissors during the traditional challenge!) during a sewing project.
The project was to make a "Snapsack". This is a 16th Century bit of luggage used by soldiers, trapper, pioneers, etc..... Mine was a little fancier and made with more modern materials, but the concept is basically the same: a shoulder bag.
Details here:Show content
In the summer I need extra water when hiking. I often carry a backpack with extra water, but little else. The backpack often seems like more bag than I need and tends to be hot and sweaty. I thought it might be a good idea to make a small bag that could carry a lot of water--hence the Snapsack.
This bag was made from the leg of a worn-out old uniform. I used some brass hardware to attach some webbing. A snap buckle to make it adjustable. It's a pretty simple set up.
The test load: 2.5 Liters of water, a Sierra cup, and a mini-survival kit. There was still room for a light rain jacket......which might have been a good idea today..... [read on]
The bag is held shut and hung with a simple Prusik knot. The bottom of the strap is attached with a brass snap hook.
Obviously, having made the snapsack, I had to test it out, so I went for a hike in the hills. As I started to climb, a thunder storm rolled in.......
I managed to work my way up and over the hill I was on before the lightning became uncomfortably close. A little break for water and a glamor shot of the Explorer with the rest of the gear:
I did end up getting a little wet, but on a warm day that is not exactly unwelcome. :D
(I liked my little bag so much, that I'm planning on making another version with a few extra features. Might get to complete that before the end of the challenge. If so I'll post up my revised Snapsack.)
Day 1Nice pocket organizer. :like:

Sos24, we are definitely thinking along the same line here. I was checking those paraglider caddy out the other day, along with the Yellow birch outfitter pouch, I only wish they could offer that material in the format of the Yellow birch outfitter pouch...I had looked at the Yellow Birch but the slot pocket was a couple mm too small for my flashlight. The zipper opening being down the back center rather than across the top would provide easier access and have probably been preferred, but this one has worked well for my needs this far. It has held up to everyday carry for better than a different 1000D pouch I had.

Absolutely agree on the material, I had been using paraglider cloth for wallet for the past decade or so, and can attest to their durability. I just really like the idea of slanted slots design on the yellow birch outfitter pouch, and hope they could adopt the same.
You could try to contact the seller and see if willing to make a custom, because some are willing to.

Well, I did it. I found an old, well used gray frame in need of some love on the Bay. It should be here in plenty of time to get a go at our Challenge!
Now, what do you all think? Should I send it to to someone more skilled at modding than I am and have it converted to a Yeoman?
Day 2Great usages but I think your day went even better!
I went to a Formula 1 press event last evening and I brought back a SAK + F1 car combo pic. :) Also used the Explorer to remove the event's wristband and today it dealt with the very mundane task of opening some envelopes.

I've always wanted one Ray. I like 3 layers, plus that may glass really is becoming handy (and fun with the Explorer your World thread!).I have a couple of Swiss Champs that are going into conversions and made into a Yeoman and the second is another Woodsman. Just need to find someone with the know how as it would be costly for me in buying the tools and making the set up to do it.

I am thinking about modding an Explorer to make a blade-less. I’m just not certain if I’m going to keep it basic and just remove the blade layer or if I’m going to attempt what I really want of it being more of a Yeoman with nail file in place of blade.
I am wondering if TSA will let the backside awl go through. ???

Tomorrow I am going work on some mods.
For those of you that want to start modding it’s not that hard. I would start small take an old Hiker or camper apart and put it back together without the opening layer. That way you can reuse pins. If it does not work out get some new pins and do it again. Practice until you are happy with how it turns out. Just a good way to get your feet wet and gain some confidence.
For anyone that is interested, this is a primer Garth posted years ago it's what got me started modding SAKs.

Day 3--What in the heck is that tiny writing on this model wrecker? I'm glad Matchbox finally reintroduced the Western Star. I wasn't paying $25 for them on the secondary market. Scored this one about a month ago at my Walmart for a whopping $5. Whanted them to do it in a Jamie Davis Motor Truck livery, but the generic one isn't half bad. Outside of warning labels, I haven't seen "Keep Hands and Loose Clothing Away From Moving Parts" in big letters as it is on this truck. To me, if you're running farm equipment, or even a big wrecker, it should be common sense.
Miniatures and SAK magnifiers come in handy. Especially when reading markings. As an around the house or town EDC, the Explorer is right at home. Stuff I actually use for that stuff.

I don't understand this observation. Anyone else see this? Or is my sample size too small to be making generalization?

I think there's something to this. My instinct is that chaps tend to prefer strong flavours (such as a curry) whilst chapesses don't. And of course there are exceptions. I'd be interested if there was some science behind it but I doubt I know more than you Nix. Instead I do know I've been 57 miles on my road bike today and none of them required the use of my Black Explorer :facepalm:Very nice trip! I usually do 50 on the Silver Comet trail in Georgia. But now that I am in Florida, I need to see what trails are available. Enjoy :tu:

Instead I do know I've been 57 miles on my road bike today and none of them required the use of my Black Explorer
Day: 04
You know how it goes..... I'm fiddling around with the new vintage Explorer (destined to become the TOE) when I decide that the blades need to be sharpened up. Nevermind that the blades are destined for the spare parts bin...... They are dull and should be sharpened up.
A little time with diamond stone and strop and the blades are back to hair-shaving sharp. I'm always delighted with the ease of restoring a SAK's edge.
But, now that the blades are functioning......... I decide I'll carry the vintage Explorer today while I'm doing a couple of projects.....
I've dropped a little weight and my favorite belt is a bit too big. Instead of drilling an extra hole in the tongue, I decide to move the buckle back.
First, the flathead is used to remove the bolts holding the belt together
(https://i.imgur.com/yCm183S.jpg)
Then the pen blade is used to cut a new slot for the buckle's post to ride in (using the previous bolt holes as a guide):
So far so good. The awl was used to cut two perfect new holes for the bolts:
Reassembled and ready for action:
The bolt nearest the buckle might need a washer, but I'm using the belt as is, now. :tu:
A ride that distance without the need of tools is a good one.
Great job Nix :like: :tu:
3 uses in one project pretty good.

i hear you.Awww yes...mine was IDPA and I did enjoy that. Before that was PPC with a revolver.
i was into IPSC but the fun went out of that a couple years back, although i will resume this month, since my son got his 1st handgun and wants to actively participate.
my father also resumed shooting, last year,so we all go to the range together,at least every couple months
Day: 04Some great usages congratulations on the weight loss. :tu:

Day: 04 (bonus material)The perfect example of riding a gym bike and doing the real thing. The real thing wins all the time!
Well...my day isn't going exactly as planned.....
Had a nice conversation with a TSA agent today.
Here's the short of it:
Bladeless Leatherman tools are recommended.
Day 4:
Just got back from the grocery and using the Explorer to cut up the plastic doohickey from some orange soda bottles...

I'm surprised to find that my SAK can opener skills are a bit rusty.....I guess I bet start eating more!
I, too, love a good radish. Especially with a little salt. Mrs Nix, however, does not. I've found that men are more likely to like radishes more than women. You are likely spot on, with exception my wife likes radishes chopped into potato salad.
I don't understand this observation. Anyone else see this? Or is my sample size too small to be making generalization?
You are likely spot on, with exception my wife likes radishes chopped into potato salad.
Yet, I have read MAN is the only mammal on the planet that eats radishes.

I would have to disagree, I have 5 dogs and they get almost as excited about the radishes as they do chicken. If your not carefull you could give up a finger with either one.Dogs are weird, they even eat poop.
Even did some research and found that in moderation radishes are good for their digestive tract and cleaning their teeth...
Days like that reminded me of a quote that is frequently paraphrased in the military by Helmuth von Moltke:
“No plan of operations extends with any certainty beyond the first contact with the main hostile force.”
Better known as: No plan survives contact with the enemy
Sometimes life or the world is the only enemy needed.

Day 4
We have had a really stormy day with lots of thunder and lightning, so the dog did not get his normal walk. I felt a little bad for him. So during my grocery trip, I got him a toy and a chew treat. He actually found the toy and got it out of the bag, leaving the treat in the bag. The Explorer helped me liberate the new toy from its package, before opening a beer.

As far as the dogs eating anything, you have not met my dog. He will turn his nose up at lots of foods including some that dogs supposedly like (peanut butter, pumpkin, yougurt, and many more). I have even seen him turn his nose up at some of the trats the Vet and pet stores offer him. When he was a puppy, the trainer was shocked at how little he was motivated by treats. Now chicken, cheese, or okra get his single focus. As far as treats bullies and himalayans are his favorite.
Day 4Oh boy, that looks so good! Well done
Today cut some onion and garlic to make some beans. Opened a Tritip cryovac and cut a chicken in half.

The Explorer got called on a few times today
First was the bottle opener driver for changing the HVAC filter
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190805/104a656271d0a59ed883de17807895f8.jpg)

Then the pen blade for opening the mail to include a new SAK, which I bought specifically for the scales.

Day 5
CHICKEN WIRE FLYER!
Several years ago a couple of my youngest Son's freinds were spending the weekend. Just so happened we had some chicken wire that had to be taken down and disposed of. Gave that job to the boys while off I went to tackle another project (who knows what? )... A short time later I looked in on them (don't leave three teen-age boys to themselves too long (they just might blow something or themselves up  ). Low and behold they had all the chicken wire down and one had taken a section and folded it up into a "paper" airplane, Well I couldn't help but see the irony in that so it's been hanging off the eave of my back pourch ever sense.
Day5:popcorn:
Great uses everyone
I did not have a a lot going on today I did cut some chicken up and took apart a SAK to start a Master Election mod. This mod I want to do at my desk with a minimum of tools no drill-press.

Got the gray frame today. Honestly, it's not bad! It's the original solid red scales, and really only needs a new scissors spring. I think I'm going to clean it up and get a spring for it. I love the feel of the original, old scales!that's a sweet addition.congrats
We decided to celebrate with a cup of Dark roast at Starbucks 😁

Day 6Nasty
Mail again and an unfortunate "accident" with the Explorer: I usually carry my SAK in my front right pocket in a home made elastic caddy, but today I dropped it in my cargo shorts' side pocket - it was a mistake. I only stepped out for 10 minutes, but something in the pocket scratched the front scale pretty well. Annoying, as this was a brand new set of scales a couple months ago, and they looked really good until now. >:(
Very organised. :like: This might be a silly question Nix old chap but you will, erm, be packing clothes too ??

I've got one thing to say to you Nix. Probably but do remember to dodge wasps and hornets with the rest of your body. If you want a wasp trap I'll mail you
That's rather creative use of the hook, I probably would have used the flathead(pry tool) to do that. Sweet use!
Day6
Great uses everyone opening packages my favorite. Snacks are close second. Wiring up trees from deer, coffee and bee traps. Sounds like a good day.
As fo me I tightened up the TP holder in the bathroom. I also tightened up the tonneau cover brace bar clips in the back of my truck that have been lose forever.

then snipped thread while doing leatherwork
Nice use! :tu:yeah,it heats up the incense, less smoky.
That's part of the reason why I like the inline phillips(though I am actually fine with a backside one when needed), the 90 deg position does give a lot more leverage.

Day 7A busy day! Well done.
The pen knife on the Explorer helped with opening the mail, which contained a few goodies.
Those goodies happened to be a couple Navy camo scales, a Tinker with Smoky the Bear scales for putting on my Woodsman and a Ranger which had a new set of WWP scales waiting for it. So then the Explorer package hook and can opener helped with the scale change.

I also realized the butane insert on one of my Zippos needed refilling so I used the tip of the can opener for ensuring all the gas was out of the lighter before refilling and adjusting the flame.

Replaced the swivel plate on my Wife's stool. Now she can keep a better eye on all those 6th graders she will be teaching. Love the in line Phillip's driver. Never really cared for the back side driver much. In the confined space of the jobs I need a Phillips for the t-handle is often as bad as no driver at all.:iagree: inline is better! :tu:
And with a knife the size of the Explorer, it actually fits in tight spaces, some larger models, even with the inline Phillips don't fit too well.It does sharpen up nice!

It was a hot day out on the motorcycle. Really it was the salt I craved, more than the nuts.
Day 8Nice shot! The book on swordsmanship sounds interesting.
Been a pretty long day at office and went to modding knife straight after, finally got a little time at night to catch up on Japanese culture and swordsmanship. No real action today for the Explorer, all is in my head... :)

Quite like the clip you got for the Explorer, does it glow in the dark?

Yes it does. I have that size, also some bigger ones. 3D printed from a guy in Germany, I think.

Day 8Nice usage and ouch!
For the second week, or at least the first day of the second week, I switched to my other, newer, white Explorer to shake things up a bit. I found good use of the magnifier, the pin and the tweezers, I needed to remove a splinter from my finger. Actually it's highly unusual for me to have splinters as I just sit at my computer typing away most of the day, I don't have the faintest idea how it got there.
Also, the monthly dose of popular science arrived today. National Geographic Explorer, right?
EDIT: New page! :nanadance: :nanadance: :nanadance:

Day 8Nice usage! I hate getting battery watches...which is why I like the automatic self winding or solar powered watches.
Some mail duty

Then noticed my watch is dead, so used magnifier to see what size battery I need.

Nice usage! I hate getting battery watches...which is why I like the automatic self winding or solar powered watches.
I have two old pocket watches that were my great-Granddad's. Neither work, need to get them fixed. Been looking at the Vostoks a lot. The only reason I dislike them is all the Soviet/Russian insignia, but then again, they are the military issue watch of the Russians. So, WWII era US and British Watches are what I've been really liking.
Day 8. Changed the fuel filter in the riding mower. We'd been ordering a smaller one online, then I picked up a bigger one at Lowe's. BIG MISTAKE! Didn't last long, and was really too large for the application. It was on so tight, I had to use the Wichard (316L stainless, basically rustproof, but not good at edge retention) to cut the fuel line off the filter on one end. Used the scissors to straighten out the cut after using the rigging knife. Usually, I would have used electrician's snips, but had decided to go without my tool bag. Hard to believe the little 91mm scissors ate 1/4 reinforced rubber fuel line for lunch.

I don’t like changing watch batteries, but this one has been around a long time. While in the Navy, I loved the 3 time zones which not a lot of watches had. Now I don’t wear watches enough to want to spend the money. Less money on watches means more on toys. and that is so true! :tu:

I like it...with caveats.
It works and throws nice sparks. I've used mine with some sort of fire starter tinder, e.g. waxed jute fibers.
I've also broken one when first trying to use them. They are delicate. I think the tricks are to support them while striking a spark and 'strike' them along the narrow edge. Do that with some firestarter and you'll get a fire. (Even the one I broke was able to start a fire.)
Gimmicks? Nope.
Plan A? Noooo......
But a nice little 'just in case'? Yes, I think so. And so one goes in my Explorer. :tu:

Guess what more garlic. Four of my teenage grandkids came over today to hangout. So I wiped a feast. I cut some onion and garlic for pasta sauce and homemade meatballs and saved a little garlic to make garlic butter. I also heated up some Alfredo sauce with chicken. I browned the meatballs in a pan and barbecued some sweet Italian sausage then put them in the sauce to finish cooking.

Well, to be honest if they're partying on canned Boddingtons I'll sub them their last hurrah. It's not a beer that'll break the bank. Last year they had bottled beer because I had that to hand. So I made that work a bit harder.
Not done much Explorering today so here's my Fisher bullet pen up close. Great little pens

First, I opened medicine with the pen blade. Then, did some detail work cutting rubber shelf liner to put in one of my SAK storage Plano boxes (it was just scrap leftover from lining kitchen drawers; I'll need to buy a good-sized roll of the stuff to do what I want); and I started work on the dog's crate with the cap lifter. Decided I'd use my Stanley Wonder Bar instead; it's an older USA model, and hard to destroy--it's been hammered on, stepped on, and who knows what over the years.:like:

I'm still struggling with this particular can opener. I think the edges of the hook part of the opener are just a little rounded and it wants to slip off the rim of the can. It worked just fine, but definitely not as easily as some other Vic can openers on other SAKs that I've used.

Actually quite easy. Thanks! Will definitely be giving this a try on the next one! :tu:
1 1/2 cup broth from roast
1 tbls unsalted butter
1/4 cup minced apple
8 oz Red's apple ale split 4oz and 4oz
1/8 teaspoon cyanne if desired
1/4 teaspoon season salt (adjust to taste)
1 tbls corn starch mixed with 4oz of cool not cold ale.
heat broth, butter and apples to a boil add cyanne, 4oz ale. Resume boil add season salt allow foam to go away.. Stir in ale/starch mixture and simmer to desired thickness. Will thicken more as it cools.

Seems no one has posted to the "SAKs and Miniatures" thread for a long time. I really need to get that thread back going.
This is a Siku I recently picked up. Plenty of opening parts. Chose the side with the extrication gear; which strangely, the 1/1 Sprinter/Rosenbauer 6x6 are not equipped with. I got back into European brands due to bad local availability (around here, I only have Walmart and Dollar General; everyone else either dropped diecast or closed up shop), but it's changing as it always does when the kids go back to school; as that's when everyone restocks and resets. Bought a ton of stuff yesterday at my local Walmart; and that was with the entire Matchbox Working Parts range stock still in the back (WM said they had 19 online, store only had two).
Day 13. Only used the pen blade opening medicine.

As for me not much going on with my Explorer today. I did put together a Scientist today I made out of a Hiker I bought at the flea market yesterday.

Seems no one has posted to the "SAKs and Miniatures" thread for a long time. I really need to get that thread back going.Opening parts vehicles are cool. :like:

Lately with the print on somethings, I wonder if it is just my eyes or if it is getting smaller. Either way, the magnifying glass can really help.At our ages...it’s our eye’s getting tired! The magnifying glass is a must have. :tu:

:iagree:
Nothing so exciting here. Just some post opening so here's a magnifier shot of my new bullet pen. To be honest it's a better shot of the Explorer than the pen but I guess that's ok here. It's not a pen forum is it ? ...
Congrats, Spartan and Barry!
Day 14: 22 years ago, I was celebrating the birth of my first son, Noah, who is on the Forum as Spartan 19. Nothing quite so exciting here today!More great posts today. Happy Bithday Spartan and job well done Barry. ZROXA1 hope you and your wife are both better today.

Fast Bill nice picture. I carried a bullet or full size space pen around for years. I still have a couple of the full size, but when my dog was a puppy he managed to chew up the caps on both my bullet pens. I’m thinking I might need to get a new one because I do really like them.

this was the 1st time in the shop, but Pepe has messed the house a few times.my brother found him as tiny kitten,in the engine bay of his car after stopping to fill gas,and named him Pepe Le Pew since he farted so much.he's taken up residence with us and our 2 cats since my brother moved homes last year.
when i work with Giraffe bone or horn,i like to run the incense burner to mask those horrible odors.
and the smell of machining coolant.
Using the Explorer to assist my young grandson in disassembling some tight fitting Legos, the can opener works great for this task. Also used the main blade to open some food packages for breakfast.
Also, I like the grey/glass magnifier package.
Day 15: Thanks for the well wishes for my son! This Challenge is really a great time!I am pretty sure you will enjoy it as my other copy is just now getting worn!
I used the main blade to open a package from Rapid Ray containing a Boy Scout Orienteering Book and BSA compass. Thanks Ray...I can hardly wait to read the manual and see how I do at orienteering after all these years!
What's everyone's preference as far as usability goes? The gray frame mag glass or the larger, newer version? For me, I love the old frame, but like the larger glass. I think probably the best compromise might be the custom frame that Syph007 makes. :dunno:Well I would love to have one by Syph007!

Big fan of the bullet pen here! I always carry a black one in my left back pocket (I'm a lefty, or mixed-handed to be precise) and have a chrome one too, I'm keeping that one for fancier occasions or to fit a silver themed carry if I feel like that.

Nice story with the cat! For the Giraffe bone or horn, was it for knife scale or some kind of art work? I am slowly warming up to the idea of knife making, but am naturally drawn to all things DIY.knifemaking.
Thank you Sos. They are great pens, maybe not so as dog chews (try the titanium nitride finish that should be harder gnaw), but I find them really versatile both for work and play. And they're a great distraction in work meetings though I do feel the need to keep them shiny which is a challenge !

Day 15. Was helping put new vanities in the bathroom (old ones, being mostly particleboard, broke, along with their medicine cabinets); so I had to go full on industrial with what I packed. Given as I'm becoming more and more a minimalist, this is pretty much overkill with this much. Used both blades for cutting, and the cap lifter to scrape off a scratcher covering the code from a gift card that was given as credit for returned merchandise, since it needed to be used on plumbing components. Also used the mag lens to make sure I got all the rust off my SwissTool's file (back early in the summer, I'd lost it on the porch, mistakenly left it outside overnight during a rainstorm, and the file got rust splotches) when I cleaned it using a file card.Tool day for sure!
Knipex 125mm Cobras, Duluth Handiman, Explorer, Schrade USA 34OT, SwissTool (mostly as backup), and my old Kobalt Utility Knife (or its secondhand backup that came in a lot; since mine is now showing as much wear from use as was the used one when I got it). And that doesn't count my Bic pen, my Olight i3EOS or Berol pencil.

Day 16Nice usage
Can't believe we are more than half way done, this challenge is easier than I thought. I switch to a SG explorer and open a can of soup for breakfast. I grew up using the can opener the 'wrong' way, rotating the can counterclock wise instead of clockwise. I still have a hard time switching it the other way. I guess the bonus of using it the 'wrong' way is that I might have a easier time to use the combo tool to open can?
It works to get the ice cream out easily and cleanly.
Highly recommended.
You're lucky. My truck, despite being a 1998, is Torx everything.Mine is a 97 Toyota Hilux.

Day 16: Breakfast with my newer Explorer! I apologise for the lack of excitement lately with my posts. I've been at work quite a bit more than usual the past few weeks. Those are some great additions to snack on out in the woods for sure! :tu:
Wow Barry, those trees look big through the magnifier ... wait, that's not Old Grey ?? Your should do a comparison shot
I've used my Cybertool and Explorer to get into a radio that wasn't working. Working fine now.
. Great job Phil!
Time for me to eat a little crow, here.
I've long said that I don't really need a large blade and a pen blade on a 91mm SAK. In more than one post in the past I've put a stake in the ground saying the pen blade is extraneous (we do have white out these days....) and a fingernail tool would be more useful, in general.
And I still think that to a degree......however......
I find that I do like using the pen blade quite a bit. I think I've used the large blade only twice (maybe three times) during this challenge, but I've used the pen blade much more. THe pen blade is a really convenient size for opening small packages, removing tags, cutting string, etc..... Yes, the big blade could do all these same things, but the small blade just seems a bit easier to use and is the one I reach for instinctively.
Part of the bias might be because I have the large blade mentally reserved for food prep tasks (like that strawberry ice cream). But I think there is a natural tendency to choose the smallest blade that will get the job done. The small blade certainly does offer a bit more control, too.
Where are you guys on this non-issue? Pen blade or fingernail tool?

I am about where you are in that I use the pen blade when I have it. I can see the usefulness of having a nail tool in its place, but my preference is to replace it with the combo tool and not have the opener layer, like in the Yeoman vs the Explorer. I found a similar thing with the traditional challenge where if I had multiple blades, I would use different ones for different things. At the same time, if I only have one blade I am usually fine.
Wow Barry, those trees look big through the magnifier ... wait, that's not Old Grey ?? Your should do a comparison shot :rofl:Nice usage on the tools! That radio looks kinda familiar....is it a 7 or 9 band short wave with the AM/FM?

Even better! I'm so looking forward to trying the Yeoman's tool set. Noah got a Compact awhile back and absolutely loved it.
Nice usage...does your whestones number the same as your compasses??
 I just knew it!

For years I used the pen blade for everything and reserved the main blade for special occasions. Now, it's the exact opposite. I've been using the main blade on my Explorers for everything. I think owning Wengers actually has me thinking about swapping out the pen blade for the Sportsman's nail file.
Day 16Nice use!
Cut some labels for storage boxes. (Yeah, crappy photo, I only noticed now how blurry it came out. )
I'm right with Noah on the Compact. I am actualy looking foward to getting it back in my EDC. I wouldn't mind a 3 layer version with the center layer being an extra long (same as the blade length) in-line phillips driver. Maybe they could call it a Compact +.I didn't learn about the Compact until I want to recreate the Yeoman, but if I were to ever go 2 layers, I think I would use that without doubt. It is one of the best SAK for urban carry.
Now for todays use of my Explorer.
Day16
Awl box opening duty.

Day 16: The carpenters and I mostly finished the bathroom remodel. Phillips put on some cabinet doors; scissors cut open the packaging for the air nails, and the tweezers pulled out a splinter. Monday's work will entail getting the switch plate covers to fit right, and building shelving.
Don't know why this photo turned out so bad.

Nice usage on the tools! That radio looks kinda familiar....is it a 7 or 9 band short wave with the AM/FM?
Day 17:rofl:
Since having the baby, I've been basically grounded at home, but that doesn't me from eating soggy eggs in the morning and pretend I am car camping. :D
(https://i.imgur.com/CJD79Oj.jpg)
Nearly it's a basic Sony digital FM/DAB. My short wave radio went south a while ago and I've never replaced it. It might be a generation thing but I feel lost without a radio. I've learnt a lot I might never have normally looked for. Can't persuade myself that internet radio is quite the same and not just part of the self selecting echo chamber of the web.I agree with you on the “generation thing”. I enjoy scanning through the bands.

snipped the tags off a new pair of workboots [ Johnsson's Chelsea,non-steel toe, made in sa,i think,in case anyone is wondering]
I am totally with you on this one, I used the small blade almost 90% of the time. It's 'safer', get the job done, and more agile for tight cut. For box opening, less chance to cut into the content.
I agree with you on the “generation thing”. I enjoy scanning through the bands.

Day 17:A busy day and the cows came home!
Used the scissors to cut fingernails, awl to scrape paint out of a screw and drill a pilot hole for it, and mag lens to realize an old farmer's file I had was toast (so it will end up being material for making knives) due to rusting (I found it in a pile of old tools at a place we used to lease; most cleaned up, but pretty much all the files were toast; but one huge Nicholson is going to be a knife). Hook was used to zip up drill bag. I also used the hook to hold the pen so I could mark a fence post (had them disappear as of late).

I then used the Philips Head to remove the side panel on our pellet stove so I could clean it. As much as I don't really want to think about it, cooler weather isn't really that far away.

DAY 18
kick'n back with the new edition of my RV magazine.
It's good to keep some old scales around just in case.
The original scales started to come off so even though this one was chipped on one end it keeps my Explorer cloathed until I can get it a new outfit.

but which one?
Day 18. Used the cap lifter to unscrew a switch plate cover, and the hook to pull a roughly 50 pound or more roll of snow/erosion fencing. Also, my chair broke again. It's a roughly 40-something year old Terrycraft, as is my desk. Wasn't made too well. The backs of the drawers are particle wood, and the top drawer's back broke in half. The chair kept falling apart. Finally, after fixing it tonight, I said to heck with it, and replaced it with my regular rolling desk chair from the upstairs office. Honestly, I hate wheeled chairs, but I guess it's what I'm stuck with for now. I'll have to really start learning some carpentry skills to put a new back on the top drawer. The desk and chair were technically replaced two years ago, with an older "executive desk" I was given that is also much better made, but that holds my desktop.A very busy day! Great usage.

I have finally given up trying to slice bread with 91mm main blade. So Vic bread knife to the rescue today.
I reckon that the rounded blade on the DofE Compact would be better for butter and spreads but today the Explorers main blade is on it. I'm never sure about Vegemite but I keep buying the stuff on the basis that I love Marmite so I must love Vegemite right? I should do a survey ....
Cut some garden twine with the scissors and used the awl to make a wasp trap for a friend.

What is Dim Sum it looks good?Dim Sum, literally means 'heart pointing'(hearty food), is a genre of Southern Chinese food which mainly consists of steamed small bites of food(kinda like tapas in Spain). The beauty of this is you get to eat/try many variations of dishes, while sharing everything between family and friends. In picture, from bottom to top, we got steamed shrimp dumping, vegetable dumping and pork/shrimp dumping; top left, fried shrimp roll. :D

Day18Nice uses. Personally that's probably one of my favorite use of the Vic scissors, but I never did tell my wife about the trimming use of the scissors. :D
Today we got out of the house and drove to the coast and had lunch at the Santa Cruz Warf. I trimmed my fingernails and nose hair maintenance with Explorer.
:like: Crochet too? That's a cool use indeed, you should have given her an Explorer and ask her to join us next time. :D [size=78%] [/size]
Cool! Did you like your Chinese tea?
I would have but I only had one when we started  . Besides, I can't pry her away from her Classic :rofl:
I love Oolong tea. I love black teas, too. Green tea is OK, but I prefer the balance of Oolong. :tu:That's cool! If you have a chance, please do give it a try on the Pu' Er tea too. Like wine, it taste better and cost more when it is well fermented and aged.
Great posts!Great usages and nice photo. :tu:
Day 19 - Monday at work so the Explorer is on desk duty. Over the weekend I used the Explorer to cut weed trimmer line, open mail, cut food and cut some small errant shrubbery twigs. Also finally used the magnifying glass to read some fine print in a picture in the local newspaper.
So far this month I've used the main blade, small blade, scissors, inline philips screwdriver, can opener (to separate lego blocks) and large screwdriver, magnifying glass, awl, corkscrew and parcel hook . Also added a new leather lanyard. It's interesting insight on my personal use of the knife and it's tools might help me define my optimal SAK.
Day 19Great usage and I see a fixie on the table - work in progress?? :tu:

With the Explorer I have plus scales and the eyeglass screwdriver in the corkscrew. Fixed my glasses in a jiffy!!
Sorry, no pics...

And in general, that's exactly the reason I've found myself converting from Phillips to corkscrew. I never threadlocked (or had the optometrist threadlock it) this particular pair of frames, and the frame pops apart quite regularly. But at least this pair of frames is guaranteed indestructible, so I'm not getting rid of them. So, having a tool that can quickly fix my glasses wherever I am is key. While going bladeless, at least the LM Style PS flat Phillips also fits my glasses. One pair I looked at (prescription safety glasses) used what appeared to be a 0 Phillips instead of the common flat headed screw. For that, I'd guess you'd need an SAK with the 58mm combo tool or a CyberTool.
Day 20A very thoughtful gift! That is great.

no use today. the ST300 was a gift from my family on my last birthday :woohoo:
Same here! I'm up the creek without my specs :facepalm:Oh boy, that brings back some memories...I had free hand pipes like I have SAK’s.
Day 20 already! Just a vanity pic with a pipe from my son, who picked it up in Panama. It's purportedly of Cuban origin, and smokes fairly well.
Thanks Ray! It doesn't see much use, but from time to time the mood strikes me.It took me like 4 or 5 years to get over a pipe. Especially when it was steak dinner! Or the holidays.
:iagree: It's funny how certain settings trigger that!I know
Nothing exciting to report today but I do have a new T-shirt. I do like Weird Fish shirtsAnd a cool shirt it is

Day 20 (already?!).Nice usage
Opening a jump drive. We've been having a TON of issues with the woman (who has both multiple mental issues) my Dad married (Dad's lived next door since the 1980s; when he was about my age), and I use flash drives to transfer stuff over from the security camera system (while set up for the cloud, my folks and I prefer not to use it) to take to law enforcement and the lawyer when she does something to cause issue. And there was just yesterday, and the flash drive I'd been a using (identical to this one) I decided I needed for personal use (the HP I used in mechatronics went missing, and the Aston Martin car-shaped one bit the dust), so I had to get the spare out. Also used the scissors to trim my fingernails, and the pen blade to open up the cup that comes with the eyewash (got metal in my eye cutting sheet metal with my Dremel). When I was using the Dremel, I also used the SD tip of the can opener to unscrew the screw on the mandrel for cutting heads, then attach the cutting wheel.

Day: 20Sounds like a busy day for you! :tu:
Pen blade helped me stake up some overgrown tomatoes. Later, set up a new birdfeeder. Anyone have a good tomato sauce recipe that freezes well.....?

Day: 21:cheers:
A great walk today. Hot, but dry. Most of the animals were bedded down, but I had a close encounter with a curious deer and a wary chipmunk. A red tail hawk soared over head and monitored my progress.

Day 21:Lucky dogs, I’m sure they weren’t complaining
Started the day off going to feed the dogs, only to realize we are out of dog food. So out came the Explorer to cut up some smoked sausages for the dogs.
Turns out that’s all the use it will get today. Got out of bed to get ready for work a few minutes ago and my sciatica is in overdrive! Not going to work tonight. Glad I worked that 1.5 hours overtime last night!
So I’m laying on the couch, trying to alleviate the pain by stuffing pillows in different spots and stretching.
Every few years this happens. Last three or four weeks, then goes away. Doc says I have degenerative disk problem and not much can be done.
Price I pay for a wild life when I was younger. LOL

Also, more mag lens fun. Lesney, with the old Matchboxes, knew how to cast very fine details. I didn't even know this Ferrari Berlinette had the Prancing Horse in the grille until looking at it with the mag lens.

Nice Spirit Sos24.
It is a KONG Jump N Jack. It is reserved for whenever my dog is going to be left alone. I cut up some slices of his favorite treat and put them in a few of the ridge spaces. He gets so excited for it that it helps decrease the anxiety of being left alone. It has been a routine since he was a puppy. Cheese, peanut butter or some other paste type food could also be used, that would occupy the dog for longer due to being harder to remove.Must be fun for him to have such detailed care, awesome! :tu:

Day 23, in my diecast hobby, I went completely overboard today. Used the scissors a bit for those using clam pack, and the pen blade to cut the bubble on the clam pack of one, and the tape on another's box.Wow - guess they do what they have to do!
Clam pack is heck on earth. But ,I've found a seatbelt cutter/rescue hook always makes quick work of the stuff. I often have some form of it close on hand, and I always carry this Benchmade 8 on my farm pack in the Ontario ASEK cutter sheath (as while the cutter itself is poor, it's sheath is a lot better than the Benchmade's) for cutting myself, or livestock out of sticky situations. I swear, the Benchmade hooks are the best, and safest package opener there is around. No matter what it is, they zip right through it. They will cut decent sized rope in one pass. Through surplus outlets, they're often under $20 brand spankin' new.

Evil Bay delivered up a second-hand Explorer this morning. I always wonder about the backstory of these SAKs, offered up to collectors and modders for a few dollars. Who bought it? Why? Why is it being left go? Was there no one to gift it to? How did it get those scratches and wear marks? Small mysteries....
I had originally thought that this one might be used as parts for my modding project, the T.O.E., but after examining it I thought it would have sufficient life left in it's Swiss bones to still be of good service as it was.
Overawl, this Explorer was in pretty good shape. Both the knife blades have some scratches, but a little work with a fine diamond stone and black Arkansas stone brought the edges back to hair shaving sharp.
The in-line Phillips shows some signs of use. The flanges of the driver head have some slight distortion, but, tested on a couple of Phillips head screws, they still engage and drive a Phillips screw perfectly well.
Importantly, the mag glass is free of scratches and cleaned up easily. The scissors worked well. I gave the scissors a brief touch up with a Fiskars sharpener and they now cut very well indeed. The opener layer was in good shape, nothing to do there.
So, yes, this knife still has plenty of life.
Since I had the scales off, I thought I'd remove the keychain attachment point. In general, I find SAK's easier to carry without the pokey little keychain protrusion. Why not take it off for a more 'custom' Explorer?
The whole knife was a bit gunked-up with old dirt and grease, but a bath with Dawn and hot water soon brought it back to clean. I'm always amazed at how well SAK's clean up, the old Explorer was looking fresh.....but.........I though a dip in Mrs Nix's ultrasonic jewelry cleaner wouldn't hurt. I would have asked her if it was OK, but she was out......... ;)
Once cleaned up, I oiled the joints and made sure that the action was good. The small blade feels a little soft opening, but snaps back closed just fine. Awl the other blades feel factory fresh now.
Some new Plus Scales and a clean set of T&T installed, and I have a new favorite Explorer. I think I prefer the wider field of view of the current model Explorer's glass, but this knife is a little gem. After giving it a some care and attention, I feel bonded with it. (No, Mc Stitchy, I didn't cut myself with it.) It's now 'my SAK'. And what a great little tool, too! :tu:

I have a rack that I keep mine in. I like that they are like a summary of my career without taking up a huge amount of space. I have dupes of the ones pictured and frequently carry one or the other.

Day 24Green tea ice cream...sounds very interesting. Sounds and looks like you had a great day! :tu:
Not much happening today, brought the whole family out for lunch at a Japanese restaurant and pose my Explorer next to a green tea ice-cream at the end. I am a total sucker for this stuff.

The Medal of Honor coin of MGEN James Livingston.
He was the honorary chairman for the commissioning committee of the USS TRUXTUN (DDG103) of which I was the Executive Officer. I had the honor of meeting and talking to him a few times prior to the ship commissioning. He had a presence about him but was also soft spoken. He liked to talk about leadership and taking care of the people who work for you. He would always go up to the younger Sailors at the events and talk to them. As XO, I was the Master of Ceremonies for the actual commissioning. When I went to find my family after the ceremony, he was talking to my parents. He had told them I had done a good job and they should be proud, then he handed me the coin.

The Space Shuttle coin was passed out to members of JTF-STS after the Atlantis shuttle launch for STS-132. JTF-STS was the contingency task force that would be responsible for SAR if something happened during a launch or landing. I was assigned to three launches to coordinate any assistance from Navy units. It was really a boondoggle where you worked about 16 hours over 4 days (more if short delayed) at the beach.

Thanks, Wspeed and Ray. That is why I like the coins. Many have interesting stories add memories behind them, but they don’t take up nearly as much room to display as other things.I can understand the space issue. Like many other people here we also have other things we collect. I like slide rulers also. Some are at 20 inches I believe. Those ones eat up a lot of space. In comparison to my writing instruments, they take up not so much space.

I have several different manufacturers but my favorite is Keuffel & Esser. K&E was my first slide rule that I received while we were stationed in Puerto Rico. So my K&E total is about 25 or so.
Somewhere along the line I lost my slide ruler. It was a real gem, too. I really liked that thing, I think my parents got rid of it when I moved out but left some stuff behind. I knew some guys who were quicker with a sliderule than I was with an HP. Great tools. :tu:
If you don’t watch out the other colors then designs will start looking appealing. I’m far from the purist. Why stick to red when they have camo, Gadsden, wounded Warrior, Nat’l parks, Smokey, etc?

Day 24:Nice knife - sorry to hear about the pain in your back.
Absolutely no use of the Explorer today. What I did do today was put new rotors and pads on the rear of my wife’s Highlander. Also new pads on the front (it needs new rotors as well but I just couldn’t do it...).
I didn’t want the Explorer out there getting grimy. My bad back is destroyed now. Pain pills and muscle relaxers not even making a dent.

Clockwise or counter-clockwise? I have been doing it counter-clockwise for so so many years, I can imagine how you guys could claim the clockwise is faster? If I am going clockwise, the blade will either keep on skidding or I have to exert a larger amount of force to 'keep it moving forward'. But counter-clockwise is easy, just plant the 'peak', cut, and repeat. Which way do you prefer? And why? :pok: :D

Day 25. Not much use. I did a little weed eating this evening since the weather was cool; so I used my PST's cutters to cut the weed eater line (honestly, while SAK scissors cut it like nothing; I prefer not to torment them in this manner), and the pen blade to sharpen the ends of it so it would lock into the Autocut head I have installed on my FS-38.Nice vineyard there :like:

i had a batch of jerky [called biltong in SA,it is similar but not as dry] in the dryer since Friday, most of it was ready today.
i took a few pieces for my friends to try out.naturally,i had to slice up some bite sized pieces, enter the large blade on my explorer.
Day: 25
Another challenge chicken! :ahhh :D
I usually like to do a 'before' and 'after' shot, but missed the 'before' shot today. I did stage the 'before' shot....not sure why I missed it. :dunno: So you'll just have to imagine a chicken and SAK Explorer waiting to do battle.... ;)
:punishmentchicken:
I told Mrs Nix that I'd take her for a picnic on Tuesday. Seemed like a perfect opportunity to make some fried chicken for the picnic basket.....
The Explorer did well, although I did end up taking the breast pieces off the bone. I cut each of those into two pieces (easier to eat on a picnic and more crunchy crust bits!). This ended up being a bit messy, though. If I had used a proper chef's knife or cleaver, I would have left the breast meat on the bone. However, aside from that, the SAK did a great job breaking down this bird.
The pieces of chicken are now soaking in a buttermilk marinade. (I think fried chicken always benefits from a good marinade, especially a buttermilk marinade.) I'll make the chicken tomorrow, so no pics of the finished dish today. :)
Z' Having my own back issues I can't say enough just how much I pray that your pain will ease. I know you understand so I won't say any more. Just please keep us posted as you can.Good use!

sliced up more jerky,for a pre-work snack.
just the way i like it,dry on the outside with a soft centre. it's still a bit too dry,but i'm still experimenting [doing that since i made the dryer 4 or 5 years ago].
the "traditional" SA biltong is moist. makes me salivate just typing about it :P
the SA expats always have a source of South African foods, wherever they may be.
if you ever come across it,try the traditional, and "dry wors" or dried sausage [this is ok,depending on fat content].

Day: 27
Nice outing and picnic today. :tu: Mrs Nix and I circumnavigated Canyon Ferry Lake (a reservoir formed by damming the Missouri River). We stopped at Hellgate campground and had a nice stroll, ate lunch, and just hung out at the beach for a while.
The campground is out on a point and overlooks the lake:

Looking a bit more to the North:
Yup, those are sea gulls. It might seem odd to have sea gulls 1000 miles from the ocean, but these birds can follow the same water courses that Lewis and Clark used to travel out to the Pacific, so we are used to seeing them here in the summer.
No snow on the mountains overlooking the lake:
Actually, the mountains are looking a bit dry at the moment.
Lunch!
Curry fried chicken, Indian-inspired coleslaw/salad, a few crackers, and iced tea. Green Machine assisted in additional chicken cutting. :tu:
After lunch, a little chill time on the 'beach'.
Then Mrs Nix and I split a 'Lemon Bar' and some more iced tea. (Great combo!)

Adventure boy came along and enjoyed the outing thoroughly (especially some of the chicken). :D

:cheers:Perfect! I’m not a mayo fan at all. So when I saw yours and was thinking there was no mayo - cool. Will be trying this one out tomorrow if Publix has the stuff I need. Thanks! :hatsoff:
Ray, this was my first attempt making this 'slaw', but Mrs Nix and I both really liked it, so I jotted down what I did. It tasted almost like a Thai or Vietnamese salad, but with an Indian spin.
Nix's Indian Coleslaw (with apologies to anyone who actually cooks Indian food):
1/2 head shredded green cabbage
1 bunch finely sliced green onions
1 carrot, shredded
1 Bell pepper, finely sliced (Serrano peppers would make it a bit spicier!)
1/3 cup shredded, dried coconut (NOT sweetened coconut, but the shredded dried stuff.)
1/4 cup (or more) roasted peanuts, blitzed in a food processor to finely chop
A handful of mint leaves, chopped
...and I planned to add, but forgot to do so....1 cup cut up cherry tomatoes. I also wanted to add some chopped cilantro, but couldn't find any fresh stuff worth eating. :(
Mix all that together to make the body of the 'slaw'.
For the dressing:
Heat 1 tablespoon oil (peanut oil) in a small pan.
Add 2 teaspoons of brown mustard seed and heat until the seeds starting popping. Remove the oil from the heat and add...
1/2 teaspoon of powdered Turmeric. Let the oil cool down.
Mix juice of 1-2 lemons (I used 2 not very juicy lemons) with:
1 teaspoon ginger juice (shred about a 3" piece of ginger, squeeze the juice out of the shredded bits in a strainer.)
1 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
1 teaspoon of honey (optional, I think)
1 teaspoon of Chaat Masala (I make my own, but you can get commercial mixes at specialty stores or Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Pinch-Spice-Market-Masala-Organic/dp/B01N32KSKN/ref=asc_df_B01N32KSKN/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312157239338&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=7741409556872207506&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9021299&hvtargid=pla-568255610542&psc=1). Good stuff, but you could leave it out.)
Once the oil has cooled, mix lemon-ginger juice and oil with mustard seeds together to make a dressing. Toss dressing with slaw and serve fresh or, if picnicking later, next day. :D
I probably made that sound way more complicated than it really was....No you did great!
When I write down a recipe, I try to give myself clues as to how to make it a bit better the next time. :dunno:
 Thanks, Barry. He looks pretty good and happy there! :tu:
He's showing his age at 14 years, but he still loves a good adventure. :D
Day 27Black on black, fashion! :D
While practicing I noticed the E tuning key got a bit loose on my guitar - Explorer to the rescue! (Sorry for the spotty and grainy photo, poor lighting.) Also opened some mail with the knife today, not pictured.
Day 27I owned a Zippo from long ago, but can't recall are their internals all plastic? Or the more modern one has switched to plastic?
Not much so far today. I did notice the flame on one of my lighters was a little low, so I used the small driver tip to adjust it.

Explorer cuts open a package I received yesterday and help set it up, I have been longing to enroll in the Macgyver school of Engineering. :D

The normal Zippo internals are metal, but this is an aftermarket butane insert. It replaces the normal liquid gas Zippo insert and converts the lighter to be a butane torch.

Well thats cool! :like:Yes. I have a couple of them. The butane torch is better for paracord. Also, the fuel in regular Zippos evaporates whereas the butane doesn’t, so butane works better for someone who doesn’t use the lighter that frequently.

I don’t know if it evaporates, but the butane is gas vs liquid and in an air-tight container. I have had some butane lighters in storage work several months to a year later. If you can achieve an airtight seal with a liquid lighter (like the peanut lighters) then the gas will evaporate slower, but normal Zippos evaporate. Some people use wide rubber bands around where the cap opens or o-rings to try to get a better seal to slow the evaporation.

I second that, most of my 'survival kit' lighter I use are small wind-proof butane, and they operate just fine even years in storage. My Zippo may last as long as a month, but definitely no longer. Thanks :like:
Sorry for the off track question: I use my bic lighter on most of the paracord endings, but never did test it with other kind of lighter. What is the difference between a butane lighter vs regular lighter for paracord use?
It is not the butane so much as the torch flame. I find the torch flame is more concentrated so it seals the end quicker and better.
Day 28: old VW's are a passion of mine. This is about the only one that I can afford in this model :D

Thanks. I’m taking a page out of Richard Overton’s keys to long life - coffee, whiskey and ice cream. Although, I don’t do the cigars.
Day 28: old VW's are a passion of mine. This is about the only one that I can afford in this model :DVW’s are great. Our family has always had some model since I was kid. My favorite is the bus. They make a camper bus which is sold everywhere but here in the United States. What a shame!

August 28th - Good morning all! Some great posts and pictures about your Explorers.A lot of great use there.
Just getting the day started but the Explorer got a workout yesterday evening installing some splash guards on my 4Runner. The awl was used to drill out mounting holes in the splash guards and the in-line Phillips screwdriver was used to install the screws. Also I used the small blade to cut some extraneous tabs off the guards. This morning I used the main blade to open some food packages and the small blade to cut out some coupons.

Thanks, FB. Not the worst place to live.
Nice flowers!

DAY 28

Day 29Thats a great use and a nice looking Explorer :tu:
Explorer helps put together this chair for the little guy

Day 28. I'd put off signing up for more classes, checked today, and it was the last day to enroll. It also meant I have close to a week's worth of work to have done by Tuesday, including two assignments I have to have done TODAY. I'm having to use the temporary access to my digital materials, since I ordered the books today and they won't be here until Friday. But luckily, the E-Text saves my rear in the fact I already can read and be ready for the assignments and quiz earlier than expected. First is done (discussion). and I just finished a syllabus quiz. Got 8/10; mainly because of the way two questions was worded--I got the answers right, but they weren't worded exactly the same as the instructor put it into the system.Nice collection of die casts.
Today, the Explorer had its first emergency use. The clip holding the ends of my Lock Laces failed, and I hadto put it back on. Pried it apart with the awl and can opener, cut the laces straight, then put it back. Well, that failed, and I was stuck redoing it in an audiologist's office waiting on my Granddad. Since mostly older people go there anyway, no one made a big deal of my use of the Explorer. I grabbed an extra roll of surgical tape I had in the first aid kit, wrapped it around the ends of the laces, and then put the clip back on. Will probably just end up duct taping the laces together, just like I did with the elastic laces I owned that preceded Lock Laces. These days, I prefer Speed Laces. Yes, I have to tie them, but they stay tied until I need to take the Bates boots they're on (which is standard with the combat boots I have and use in the winter) off.
And more messing about with the mag.
zrxoa1 - Nice pic.
I hope you are feeling better and that you MiL is ok. Those emergency calls are always stressful.
Day 28:Glad to hear she is doing ok.
I missed a few days due to no use and no time to get on here.
Only real use I have been getting is here at work, but unable to take pics while in the shop working.
Tonight I did use the Explorer’s main blade to cut up some smoked sausage I was eating for dinner. Could not grab a pic because I was on the phone with my wife. She was heading up to Indiana after getting a call they took her mom to the ER in an ambulance. Looks like her mom is going to be ok.
So here is a shot during my last break...

I understand that. My FiL is going thru something similar right now.Oh boy, do I ever understand that statement! My Woodsman is always with me because of the magnifying glass! And as always...Thank you sir! :hatsoff:
Day 29 saw the Explorer mag glass helping me read instructions on a med bottle. I don't know if I'll want to give up the magnifier when another challenge happens!
Dang, Zrxie, you are having one rough challenge. I hope things settle down for you and SOON! :SAKnight::iagree: 110%
August 29th - Hello all! Coming up on a busy Labor Day weekend. This one will be especially busy for me as I will be cutting and bailing hay on my farm. It appears that the weather is cooperating with low 80's F temperatures and no rain. I'll be touching up the edge on the Explorer and using it to cut excess bailing twine on hay rolls as I begin bailing this afternoon.Nice usage when you get to doing it today.
:iagree: and also agree with you about the new magnifying glass Jack. I like how the older one is built, but prefer the FOV of the later model. I think Robert's custom frame might be the best of all.
:iagree: and also agree with you about the new magnifying glass Jack. I like how the older one is built, but prefer the FOV of the later model. I think Robert's custom frame might be the best of all.Roberts looks great for sure. I am sure it would work very well.
Great pics and uses everyone :like: :tu:A fast challenge for sure!
Not much longer now and it will be all over :ahhh
I used mine to cut open dog goodies that arrived today! I didn't have a chance to get any pictures because I had to fight off the intended recipients :rofl:
Day: 29Very nice Camper and my favorite stamp on the scales. Those hot stamp ones are just ...
Mrs Nix and I went on a road trip to Bozeman today. Feels like the big city to us small town folk.
The trip was well worthwhile--best pistachio ice cream cone ever!
(yes, I did share with Adventure Boy.)
The ice cream was only overshadowed by this new-to-me little beauty:
This Camper was clearly carried, but there isn't much evidence of use. Needs to be cleaned up a bit, but it'll look near-new when I'm done with it. And.....aluminum head on the tweezers! :ahhh
:iagree: and also agree with you about the new magnifying glass Jack. I like how the older one is built, but prefer the FOV of the later model. I think Robert's custom frame might be the best of all.
I agree, Ray.
The stamped scales are nice, but not the same.
I've been keeping an eye open for an inlaid Camping Camper. A bit thrilled to have found one in such good shape. The main blade has a few spots of oxidation, but I think they'll polish out. I'll polish the scales a bit to take out some of the marks of pocket wear, too, but then I'll just put my own pocket wear marks on the scales. So, what that in mind, my scale clean up will be fairly light and unaggressive.
Nice.
My rascal would swallow that whole. And then mope for an hour.
I don’t cut it open like Nix, because I don’t eat the entire pint in one sitting.
How is that even possible......?
Day 30
Figure I’d do another snack photo for comis on the last day.
Ice cream and whiskey again. I don’t cut it open like Nix, because I don’t eat the entire pint in one sitting.

Day 30 (Last Day) :woohoo:
Explorer helps open up the small Svord for a quick mod, a common problem for this particular model is the belly of the blade always clip/touch the end pivot due to its poor design and fit/finish. A more detailed writeup will soon be featured in the Edged subforum. :D
(https://i.imgur.com/F0YVvpa.jpg)
That's the one thing I like about a Svord. The whole thing can be stripped down using only an SAK, thoroughly cleaned, and then put back together. No locking mechanisms or backsprings to fool with, neither are there any fancy screw types--just a slotted screw. Unfortunately, it's easy to get the screw adjustment out of whack. On mine, the pivot is often too loose, and the butt screw too tight, making the tip stick out.
Day: 30
I swapped out the old scales for some plus scales on this old Explorer:
I've come to really enjoy the plus scales. These new translucent ruby scales make the old Explorer feel like a whole new knife!

Thanks, guys.
Some final thoughts for this challenge:
First, I love a Swiss Army knife. :SAKnight:
The Explorer has a well deserved spot in the pantheon of SAK's, and for good reason me thinks. While some models come and go, the Explorer keeps on going. I can see why. For me, the Explorer might be my ideal urban SAK.
I thought I might miss the saw blade, but the one time I might have needed a saw....I just left that little job undone.... So....in a sense the Explorer saved me a little work there.
In general, my preference is for a 4-layer or thinner SAK. I have come to enjoy the mighty Swiss Champ, but for EDC I think 4-layers is more than ample and easy to carry. Fairly soon, I'll be going on a short road trip, the Ruby Explorer will be going along. I've come torely onenjoy the magnifying glass and just feel better knowing it's in my pocket (i've been known to forget my reading glasses......).
The rest of the toolset is perfect for me: opening layer, knife blades, awl, hook, and corkscrew are some of my favorites. Now, with a pen and pin in addition to the T&T, this little SAK feels like a very handy little tool box.
I might prefer to see a nail tool in place of the pen blade, but I do enjoy using the pen blade. So that's a trade for me. Besides, Mrs Nix usually has a nail file handy somewhere......
I don't see the Explorer becoming my SAKMC knife--that position is still well held by my Compacter by Syph--but the Explorer probably should be my SAKMC knife. It's just that good for EDC. :tu:
It is a bit thick for my liking but not so much as to annoy.
Day 30 (Last Day) :woohoo:Thats a bummer.

Great challenge, everyone. It has been fun and the Explorer is a great knife, but the Yeoman will still continue to be my favorite.
Thanks, Hevy. The etching is actual the Surface Warfare Officer insignia. The U.S. Navy’s “jack of all trades” officer for surface ships. There are several on the Arleigh Burkes.
Nix - plus scales are nice, although I they probably won’t regularly appear on my knives until they start adding them to the scales with special designs. Even as useful as they are and as nice as the translucent looks, I’m addicted to pretty picture scales.
I'm sorry the Yeoman is discontinued. I've never tried one out. I suspect I'd like it. I've become more accustomed to 4-layer SAKs, so the Explorer has some small benefits, but I always like carrying a 2- or 3-layer SAK.
In re plus scales...... you could replace the back scale with a plus scale and keep your Gadsden scale up front..... :pok:

Bonus pic: I used the wire stripper to pull a small nail out of the wall this morning.
Great uses Humayd and Exeter.

Day 30:
Snuck my phone into the shop to show the door edge films I’m installing. Grabbed a couple pics but then a supervisor came up so had to stop.

I’ve never thought about that but true. This could lead down a new rabbit hole for me. [My Smokey could have a black plus back and my Adapted Sports a blue plus back. Those are my most commonly used, so I could stop there.]Nice! :like:
My Gadsden is on the front and now it has a black plus scale with belt clip on the back. Why didn’t I think of this? Now with the challenge being over and a new one about to beginning, I want to give the Explorer more pocket time to try out the new configuration. Oh and the mini screwdriver got to screw on the belt clip for some added use.

Day 31 (Post Challenge thoughts and bonus pix)Great GITD
Posing the Stayglow Explorer next to my recent mod of Mountain Yeoman with GITD scale (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,82489.0.html) :D

Years ago, I had carried Explorer for a long while, before settling on Mountaineer as my EDC(my go-to for SAKMC), so the 4 layers SAK is nothing new to me. Here are some of those thoughts:
Large blade: every SAK has them, I think it is a good size of blade for food prep and not too large that it is intimidating to strangers.
Small blade: Strangely, I actually always prefer small blade over the large blade, it is more versatile and nibble, especially for tighter cuts. Again, this I could definitely use in public and will probably never raise any eyebrows whatsoever
Scissors: every SAK user knows how good they are, it goes without saying...
Mag glass: I really don't have much use for it, except for fun factor or splinter. It is a strange tool to me, either I don't need it or I really do need it. The way I justify it is better to be safe than sorry.
Inline Phillips: When settling on Mountaineer as my SAKMC knife, I think this is the trade-off I have to make. If you do want to apply force, I would think this inline phillips is the way to go. On my daily encounter, I do can make-do with the can opener if push come to shove with a Mountaineer, but in return I get a metal file/saw which can both work on wood and metal. I guess that was the reason motivate me to do my "Mountian Tinker (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,82166.0.html)" and "Mountain Yeoman (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,82489.0.html)" mod.
Openers layer: I don't drink much soda/beer with the bottle, so I use the flat head way more than the bottle opener. The can opener I do use from time to time, definitely love that tool.
Summary: I always believe the thesis behind SAK is fulfilling 80% of your quick fix needs, it will never replace tradesman or real tools. In that sense, if the pliers is not needed on a regular basis, I would say Explorer is probably one of the best urban EDC that is easy to carry.
Great GITD
Great uses Humayd and Exeter.
Today is the last day of this challenge (30 days, 1-30Aug) but there are others starting on September 1st, if you are wanting to join another.

last pic from me,comparison between the Explorer and an older Champ [my 1st,i acquired a few weeks ago].
i would have preferred a longer Phillips like on the Champ.
my son has a current production Champ, but i forgot to compare it with that.

Comis - Glad I could remind you and enjoy the fixie challenge.
Your GITD scales, especially the ones you made are very nice. Seeing them, I’ve thought about how it might work if a tritium vial was embedded into a clear translucent scale and then the rest of the scale treated with a GITD paint. I wonder if the tritium, depending on the size, would help charge the GITD and between the two make it brighter.
:iagree: and excellent summaries as well! Don't know about the badges :dunno:
Day: 31Nice sharp photo :tu:
Fun challenge to be sure......and...out of habit or laziness......the Green Machine was back in my pocket today.

Just heard from Steve C. He says it will be a little bit but doesn't see any problem getting a badge for this challenge :)
You all deserve a badge :tu:
And a beer.
(Sheesh, Speedy, don't forget the beer.....)
August 30/31 - been very busy the last two days bailing hay on my farm.Great usage for sure. Nice wood. :like:
The Explorer has been used in myriads of ways in August. In the past I rarely carried a four layer SAK in my pocket, but the experiences with the Explorer have taught me that it's no issue to carry the four layer knife.
My uses have ranged from using the large and small blades to cut a variety of items, open mail and packages, preparing and cutting food, using the awl to drill through plastic and wood, using the large straight screwdriver to tighten a variety of Phillips screws, using the can opener to scrape curved surfaces, and using the magnifier glass to read small print. About the only item I did not use was the corkscrew but I did use the small screwdriver it was holding to tighten glasses screws.
It's been a thoroughly enjoyable and educational experience. The Explorer is pictured below with the modified Pioneer for changing of the guard for the September modified SAK challenge.

No worries there Humayd the important thing is you did take part and shared some interesting stuff you did with your Explorer. Half the fun is never knowing quite what everyone else gets up to. Being jealous of where Nix happens to be and what he's got on the menu - that's just a bonus
Nice looking old Champ too. :like:
Day: 23
Mrs Nix went out to run some errands today. Which meant that the Ultrasonic jewelry cleaner was left unattended. How fortunate....... >:D

:tu:
