Title: Flame On! - April Firestarting Challenge
Post by: ReamerPunch on February 15, 2024, 02:07:49 PM
(https://i.imgur.com/UD5Wnq1.png)

Let's turn on the heat, and carry a fire-starting item for 30 days. Lighters, matches, ferro rods, fire pistons, Signal, candles, sparkers, tinder, stoves, bowdrill sets. No edc kit is complete without a fiery thing.

Rules
1. Carry a fire-starting piece of gear (or several) for 30 days.
2. Every day, post a picture of it.
3. Comments on techniques, tricks, reason of preference, etc, are encouraged.
4. You may carry a different item every day, or stick to one item. Up to you.
5. If it creates embers or sparks, or catches sparks, or ignites, it counts.
6. It does not count if it burns when you pee.
7. Obey your local laws, and be responsible with flammable materials and flames.

Who wants to feel the heat?

I’m in.

I usually have a Zippo and at least one other method on me.  Plus, April will be warm enough that there will be lots of coffee and popcorn cooking outside over twig or alcohol stoves, so some use photos.

Uu someone needed fire? Everything else except butane/propane burner and Zippo (it once was part of my carry but fluid dries before i get change to use it, i prefer ferro rod and butane lighters) belongs to my backpack. 3 lighters, 3 ferro rods. Dom’t know if you’d be interested but Zippo now makes butane inserts for their lighters - double torch, torch and soft flame.

This could be an interesting challenge.  I like the people who have signed on.  Might have to think about joining a little more first.  It seems like this might turn into a Zippo exhibition.  Of course I don't smoke and don't own or carry a Zippo.  It could get boring for everyone to see my daily photo of a book of paper matches.  Best wishes.  G

I doubt anyone will hold it against you. :)
You can carry one item for the whole month, that's how most challenges work anyway. I usually stick to one tool even if the challenge allows for rotating tools. Some people have rotating edc gear, others stick to a few staples. Carrying a single item is allowed, and I'd hate to see members hesitant to join just because they'd be carrying the same tool for a month.
And would a Zippo exhibition challenge be so bad? Zippo lighters are classic, fidgety and useful edc items. And photogenic too. As are matches. :D
If you feel like joining, with whatever fire-starting gear, you are welcomed to do so. We've got plenty of time until this starts.

People are probably going to get tired of me lighting my Solo stove.  I plan to use everything I have to make it a practical skill challenge.  You could always whip up a bow drill  :tu:  As for book matches, I think they're a great idea.  My grandfather always had book or box matches that stores and banks gave away.

April Firestarting Challenge
Fire 1 of 30

So I'm going into this with a self issued sub-challenge to start a fire each day, as well as a picture of the means of starting the fire. Today I'm taking the easy route by using a Bic lighter to melt frays on a cable sock before running wires into it. On Saturday I was up in the mountains and found this lighter on the ground, and it actually worked. Since I knew I'd be participating in this challenge I slipped it in my pocket. It will likely make a few appearances this month.

Starting simple today with just a zippo. It's one I carried in the army. I nevered smoked but it's amazing how nice people became when you offered them a light.

The fixed blade is a knife I'm in the middle of rehandling

Starting out really serious today…  I have actually only used one of these. No time for a fire today and even though it’s nice out.  It works well but takes the fun out of it.

More flaming fun in the days to come!  :ahhh

Today I carried an Imco Triplex lighter.  I have two others, but this one I had recently found on ebay. a fun lighter.  The sog I don't normally carry, but it was on my desk and I didn't want to look for my rebar, my normal carry.

Day 2:

Still a bit busy so getting a setup together.  I haven’t really used my old beat up huntsman in a while so I thought I’d give it some time prepping tinder.

I’ll primarily use my ferro rod as the fire starter and when I can actually get out to use it I’ll practice with some different kindling and starting methods.

My go to setup is dryer lint and petroleum jelly with dried shavings.  I’ve also saved and dried out some corn husks that light well with a lighter or match but have never tried a ferro rod with it.  We’ll see how it goes.

Bic works in a mysterious way for me...sometimes I could have sworn some of them would emptied out just by sitting around in a drawer, some would just kept on going like an energizer bunny.  But the firststarting device I'd always bring is always a Bic.

Can you get sunflower stalks to catch other tinder? I’ve only been able to get husks to smoke and burn a little bit without catching other tinder. I imagine they’re similar.

Tried the ferro rod on the corn stalks.  Get some smoldering, but can’t get it to light other tinder.

I ended up having to pull out the inside of the stalk which was more tissue paper/foam like and that caught fire more easily than the stalk itself.  Once the "stuffing" produced enough of a flame the stalks lit up nicely.  Mind you though, these were those giant 8ft tall sunflower stalks so the base was close to an inch in diameter.  I only mention that because there's enough "stuffing" within something that size to use as additional tinder.

Day 4

Slow, dreary day. My foot is not agreeing with the new medication. I was in too much pain at work so they let me leave early. Anyway.

My Zippo was a gift. I bought the single torch insert even though I had seen some bad reviews. And, what do you know. Mine doesn't work out of the box. I contacted Zippo, they gave me the Aus customer service email. I hope I can get it sorted. I've seen people explain the necessary fix, but I don't want to take it apart, if I can have Zippo themselves fix it.

Ok, I sent the email to Zippo Aus. Expecting a response in 5-7 work days. Fingers crossed.
At least it is fitting to try Zippo's warranty and customer service during this challenge.

DAY 4  Old school today!  I've got a tin with my steel, some flint pieces, char cloth, and assorted other tinder.  It's too windy and I don't have time or patience before work to start a fire with it.  I have done it, but the tiniest SAK ferro rod works 1000x better.

Day 3

I am really enjoying the diversity of everyone’s fire making gear so far.  I went for the Bic today, and I got an old wok to use as a fire bowl.
[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]    [ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]
That's a pretty neat way to repurpose a cooking pan!

it's pretty strong- 3000 lumens and can melt a plastic bag so maybe you could be a fire starter- hopefully not in my pocket.

I remembered long time ago I was attending a meeting while the lights went off in the middle of it, I pulled out my trusted SF A2 and ceiling bounce the light for half an hour until the meeting ends.  At that point, I completely forgotten how hot the light would have gotten and it sure felt like fire (pun intended).

Since then, I have to always put a mental note that anything exceeding a few hundred lumens is to be treated with care.

Day 4 of 30:
Carried my Exotac NanoSPARK and mini Bic. I made one fire a month or so ago when I first got the NanoSPARK, and it was as easy as it could be. Frayed the quickLight tinder from the waterproof storage in the bottom and one flick of the wheel, and I had fire. I ordered a set of replacement flints and more quickLights at the time I ordered the NanoSPARK, so I would have extras. Dropped a couple of flints in the bottom with the tinder. Now I just need to figure out what I can cover the wheel with so I can pocket carry it without it destroying my pocket or pocket contents. Makes you really appreciate the skill those old timers had, when flint and steel (or even bow drill or hand drill) was the only option.

the reality is a bic is just one of the best
Truth.  They are great pieces of gear.

They’re disposable, but inexpensive and they last a long time, with one lighter potentially good for thousands of lights/fires.

They don’t work when wet, but drop one in a puddle, shake the water out of it, blow it out, let it dry a bit, and you’re back in business.

Some people complain that they don’t work if they get too cold.  I’ve never been on a polar expedition or anything like that, but my experience through mid-western and PA winters has been that, as long as you put/keep them in an inside pocket until needed, your body heat will keep them warm enough to function properly.

The only minor annoyance I have had with them over the years is that they aren’t even a little bit wind resistant.

To an extent, you’ve answered your own question, in the sense that one of the reasons you don’t see these in many other applications is their large size relative to other options such as a Bic lighter or Exotac Nanospark.

I think another reason is that, while they are great for lighting torches, Bunsen burners, gas stoves or grills, etc. they are not as versatile as some other options.  It might be difficult to direct the spark into a tinder bundle the way you can with a ferro rod.  And for lighting solid fuels, I think a flame-producing tool would always be preferred to a spark-producing tool.

Weekend carry so I can carry the big knives like I used to in the army.  :salute: haha really the only reason I don't anymore is they don't fit well in normal pants. Military fatigues have big pockets.
I really quite enjoy the Zebralight form factor and how light it is in the pocket, and is that a Pelican M6 from another picture you posted?  Those are built like a tank, and I dare say they are probably one of the most overbuilt flashlight when it first came out.

Day 6

Didn't get to post yesterday as we were tied up all day with the kids's games and family coming over.  Here's a tiki lighter I got in Hawaii 15yrs ago.

Day 8

Ran a little experiment comparing some steel wool and some dryer lint.

The lint obviously went up quick after a spark with a good flame.

The steel wool again caught well with a spark but smoldered more than burnt. I should try again with a little petroleum jelly on each to compare.

My foot is on fire. :(
But it doesn't count for the challenge so here's three sparkers. The two I carved out of Bic lighters, the smaller one is from a lighter branded TuTu, they look like a Bic but have a sparker insert like Clipper lighters.

Finally found my secret stash of lighters I have collected a while ago, still mixing a few, but this definitely bring back the fun!

Marvel is an early model made by Tsubota Pearl, a Japanese lighter company.  Though this is quite old and the small rubber pad is ready to fall off from sealing the wick, it is still one of the most unique lighters I have collected.

As a fellow flashlight enthusiast, I'm always happy to see a beam shot as a comparison.  And I absolutely adore the 519a leds, especially the 5700 dedomed.  It has absolutely no tint shift even when when it is dim and a nice hint of rosiness in it to make it warm and good to look at. DAY 10  My sapphire Spartan with Firefly.  The problem should be obvious: the tip broke off the Firefly, leaving it impossible to remove from the scale by normal means.  Another SAK came to the rescue, but I don't normally carry two.  I've thought about sculpting a drop of JB Weld to make a new end to grab.  Good idea?

Day 10

I don't use my Zippo on a regular basis, and some of them are mostly for collecting.  But one thing I learn about modern Zippo production is that they don't have the wick extend all the way to the bottom of the lighter.  Some are even just all bunched up at the top inside the fluid chamber.   So I am doing a rearrangement on this one to try to optimize the fuel flow.

I too think sculpting the JB weld probably is a pretty viable solution, especially if they don't cure too quickly so you could work it into a shape that you want.

And if you have spare toothpicks, maybe slicing the tip off another one and superglue it onto the firefly may work too?

If you are referencing the well worn silver pelican in some of my posts, that is a 2350, a single AA.  I really enjoy the 2350, I have carried it for 5 years solid, and more recently alternating  other flashlights.  I also have 4 or 5 m6s, and like those too.

Day 10

I pulled some fungus off a dead tree with the intent of using it as tinder.  I had plenty of spark with my Firefly but it wasn't taking it.  I thought it was either too windy or the fungus was still damp from yesterday's storms.  I added some dryer lint but still no fire.  I finally wrapped everything in a napkin, and then used some chunks of bark to block the spark from the wind.  After several tries I finally got it to light.  I felt like I had plenty of spark but the wind definitely didn't help any.  I'm going to try again with the Firefly when there's no wind to see if that was the issue.

That's a cool test, and the delicate size of the flrefly probably does make it even more challenging that it is.  I wonder will a larger ferro rod or even one with magnesium block will make a big difference in this damp environment.

Here is one of my imco lighters, and the brass one is my son's lighter, but I don't know what brand it is.

I think I might have seen it somewhere, besides the gas flame, does it also have a "match" you can lit installed inside the body?

If you are referencing the well worn silver pelican in some of my posts, that is a 2350, a single AA.  I really enjoy the 2350, I have carried it for 5 years solid, and more recently alternating  other flashlights.  I also have 4 or 5 m6s, and like those too.
Thanks to this, it looks so much like a mini M6 and have no idea this exist.  Cool!
I have fond memories with the PM6, that's one rugged flashlight that's almost unbreakable and great for building hotrod led light (way back when led was just starting to become popular).

I still have more fungus left so I'm going to try with the Nanostriker and a mag block/ferro rod to see if that helps.  The fungus is pretty thick though so I'm going to tear it into thinner pieces and try with the Firefly again.

Day 11

I'll be using my trusty Zippo this weekend.  I think I've had it for nigh on 25yrs.

I have hot Roddenberry two or three m6's, one even has a Malkoff drop in unit.  Not done with them all, yet.  Lots of fun.

🔥DAY 11🔥

it was too cloudy and rainy today for trying to start a fire with the magnifying glass so just carried the Dunhill rollagas, Reylight Rook and FX. used the lighter to fire up some incense but no action shots.

it's been pretty rainy and misty here so it's hard to get a proper beam shot but tried my best. Here's the beam shot for the Reylight Rook with triple 519a 4000K emitters on turbo. forgot to take a "before" shot but it was basically pitch dark- this little light is such a nice flood and thrower in one.

I broke all my firefly’s. I found that cutting a flat side onto a stick, and then setting the FF on the flat to support it during strikes made it last a lot longer before breaking.  Truly is an emergency tool that works best with waxed tinder or charcloth.

Day 12

Just got this lighter yesterday and wanted it to work, but these particular vintage lighter has an inherent design flaw, where the gas tank is made of plastic and it is easy to leak.  So I am returning it today.

Took a picture of it just for the sake of it, if the gas is filled, the bottom right round window will turn red to indicate it is full.  Pretty neat design, shame it did not function properly as it supposed to.

cloudy and rainy today so no fire starting attempts with the mag glass.

carried the Dunhill rollagas and tried to light some incense but it failed to light again. I think it's the butane regulator but it could be many things because it's a really finicky lighter.
:twak:

its quite a handsome lighter- circa 1960s- but it's not reliable in the slightest. so the bic (not pictured ) stepped in as a back up.

vintage rollagas can be quite capricious so definitely not something to rely on in a survival situation. I may need to pick up something more reliable- any suggestions for a reliable survival lighter would be appreciated.

What brand of lighter is that? Looks similar to the Ronson I just posted

That lighter belongs to one of my sons, it is the amazon lighter from a couple pages ago.  It says Chief on the bottom, but son says that is not the brand name.  It has a metal match (or whatever you call it) on the top as well.

Day 16 (make up)

Since I got an Austrian made IMCO in hand, I would like to share a few findings I have learned from online resources and what I had observed by comparing this Austrian made IMCO vs other IMCO.  Someone wrote a very detailed comparison guide on reddit, I would encourage anyone interested to really check that out.

Austrian made Imco usually would have 'IMCO PAT' writing inside the body, and the flint spring has higher coil count.

L: Potentially Chinese made IMCO(more on this later);  R:Austrian made IMCO

Austrian IMCO tends to have a looser snuffer(some say for a better seal), the flint wheel is not straight-lined and has a bulbous rivet joint.  The Austrian body supposedly is made of plated carbon steel, so it is very rusty once the plating worn out and it is magnetic.  Chinese made IMCO tends to be made in stainless steel.

Sometimes the Chinese made one would have 'come of Austria' at the end of fuel tank, which is a total giveaway.  The overall snuffer and flint compartment has tighter tolerance, but the unchamfered corners are also sharper than the ones found on the other Imco.

Now what strikes me as interesting is the alleged Chinese Imco I have is actually just as magnetic as the Austrian Imco, and the snuffer is also loose as the Austrian one.  However, the straight-lined flint wheel is quite typical of a Chinese made Imco...I am starting to wonder whether this is an earlier version, which the Chinese factory maybe using left over parts from Austria? :dunno:

Anyhow, common preconception is that Chinese Imco are imitation and inferior to the originally made Austrian ones, personally I think it is just a well designed product evolved over time and different material.

Essentially when the Japanese Windmill company brought out Imco and relocate the production to China, the only major change was to make it with stainless steel, instead of carbon steel.  Maybe there is tolerance issue here and there, but overall I would consider it a decent improvement, especially when you consider the lower price tag and the longevity with the newer material.

well the dunhill rollagas started leaking butane and went empty fast so it's officially out of commission until i can have it serviced. and then the flint in the zippo ran out and it turns out the dunhill flints are too wide to fit the zippo  :twak: i tried to throw a spark from the dunhill to the zippo but was not successful. i'm think the fuel was too low.

luckily had a pack of matches in my pack to light the rocket stove to make tea and food. (no picture bic don't awlways bring my phone with me when i'm out exploring) that's why i awlways carry a backup for the backup  :drink:

Got this giant stick of ferro rod a long while ago, but just noticed it has cracked at the lanyard hole, must have happened in the past year when I wasn't paying attention.

Oh yeah they make a great team, nothing throws more sparks than an Opi.  I am a big fan of the 1/2” rod, despite being a bit heavier than the littler ones.

That's a neat idea to wrap duct tape about the ferro rod, not only it's a decent tinder by itself and it's useful to mending stuff on the field when needed.

I have loved Clipper lighters for both those reasons.

Although, they changed the spark wheel a few years ago so the edges aren’t round but more star like.  I can see it making it easier to spin in wet or cold conditions, but have also. Found they tend to wear and lock-up easier now.

I have also recently had an issue with the refill pin on a couple of my full-size Clippers being too big for the tip on my butane bottle.  I don’t have enough to know if this is a common problem, but it is a little frustrating.

I probably need to do some experiment to compare a regular zippo side-by-side to this Field S, just to see which of this will evaporate less over time.

This UST firestarter was kinda popular many years ago, supposedly it is easy to operate with one hand and scrapper is pre-installed inside the chassis, so everything is all inclusive.  But over the years, I find it harder and harder to bring the ferro rod out(by pressing the sides of the starter) and often time it requires a firm squeeze from two hand in order for it to work.

Imco keeps a new Hanklight D4K triple channel company.(that's a mouth full).

Really liking many of the Hanklight offerings--you could practically choose any popular led installed in the light with different functions/configuration.  This particular one has dual white/Red/UV led all installed on the same chassis.

Thanks to the Anduril flashlight software, it does make it rather easy to operate, despite a complex configuration.

I will soak the strip today and try to light. In the case of my kit, the matches are new so there is an extra striker strip inside with the matches that could be brought out if the outer one is not working. Obvious weakness is when the outer strip wears out.

Gets me thinking though, why not just carry the strip with the matches all the time to prevent it getting wet?

I think the popluarity of a certain youtube video does bring a lot of attention to the Millwaukee utility knife in the past years, and I still have yet to get one.

It's supposed to be small, but it's really thick, and extremely heavy. And it's not as well-made as the regular Fiskars utility knife. This one has a lot of play when closed and when opened. But the pivot is not a screw I can tighten to reduce the play.
The Gerber EAB is miles better than this, if you're looking for a small folding utility knife.

I tried starting fire with this 8 W2 leds Hanklight (approximately 7000-8000 lumens?), but wasn't successful.  I have seen it done on YT in the past, and my wild guess is the relative humidity is usually really high where I live and it's been raining for the past few days, so it's even harder to make it lit.

Thanks for the feedback, if I were to get one, I am thinking maybe the Milwaukee one?  It looks kinda promising, not super heavy and has a small 1/4 bit adapter which is quite handy.

I've never tried with a flashlight, but I suspect it has a lot to do with the focal point of the lense. I doubt any of my lights are strong enough to do it. None of my lights break 2000 lumens, most are even below 1000 lumens, But now I'm now wondering if multiple of them combined might work....hmm

Day 26

I tried starting fire with this 8 W2 leds Hanklight (approximately 7000-8000 lumens?), but wasn't successful.  I have seen it done on YT in the past, and my wild guess is the relative humidity is usually really high where I live and it's been raining for the past few days, so it's even harder to make it lit.

is that a DT8 or DT8K? i've been looking at picking up one of those  :ahhh

how do you like it?

Ever since I carry a sling bag for babysitting my little guy, this lightweight urban pouch has been with me for the past year or so.  Not all items come in to use all the time, but even once a few months, all these has proven to be valuable when needed.

That light looks very floody.  My first thought would be that you may have enough output power, but need a way to focus the beam.
It surely is not as focused as those with big reflector, but the optics together with the W2 led do produce a bright, big round hotspot with ample spill light down range.  Maybe somewhere in between a pure flood and a no-spill all spot beam?

I've never tried with a flashlight, but I suspect it has a lot to do with the focal point of the lense. I doubt any of my lights are strong enough to do it. None of my lights break 2000 lumens, most are even below 1000 lumens, But now I'm now wondering if multiple of them combined might work....hmm

That's a DT8K with the 21700 battery and 8x W2s.  Basically, it is just a hot-rod flashlight, mainly for the wow factor and put a smile on any flashaholics. :D  I think DT8K is probably a better platform for this purpose, a little more battery power and mass to delay the step down just a bit longer.  I never really did measure the actual step down time, but it is really short since the thermal protection probably kicks in rather soon.

For more practical purpose, I think any dual-channel D4V2, DT8, D4K or the latest D3AA will be great EDC choices.

(sorry for the de-rail, but once talk about flashlight, I just can't keep it under my hat...)

I never really considered the larger tenacious and Rescilence knives, but after trying a smaller persistence when I need free shipping I'm now thinking I've been missing out haha

I tend to like larger pocket knives, the Resilience was my first Spyderco.   I liked the look, length, and especially the flat grind on it.  I carry and use it quite often!

My biggest take away from this has been that I really rarely need a lighter in my EDC. It mainly just sat in my back pocket, unless I wanted to try starting a fire in the evening. In the end keeping a small Bic lighter in my bag and car like I've always done seems to be the best balance for me.

My second take away is my wife hates me throwing sparks around in the house

Day 30

This month went by like a breeze, and before I realized it, it's already day 30!  Being a semi-flashaholic myself, can't help but to get a new Pelican 2350 and it has just arrive in time before the end!

First off, thank you for RP hosting this interesting challenge.  Being in an urban setting and a non-smoker myself, a firestarting tool is not a daily necessity for my EDC rotation.  So this is indeed a great opportunity to get to see everyone's firestarting tool and putting them in use.  I've also used this ooportunity to learn a little bit more about some lesser known lighter and the mechanism behind all these designs.  So thank you, and this challenge is definitely not the same without your contribution and inspiration.
