The footage of the band playing on a stage right on the beach and the wave comes and tears it apart was terrifying   :o

Good Lord!

God help them. Can all of our Indonesian members chime in to let us know they are OK and what help might be given?

There was a news story about the band, singer survived, bassist and manager dead, and drummer & guitarist still missing or something along those lines. Very tragic

It has been reported that this tsunami was not started by an earthquake so there was no seismic activity warning.  It was started by a volcanic eruption causing a landslide.  There should have been a tidal surge warning, but the warning device had been vandalized.  If they ever find whoever vandalized the warning device the person or people responsible should be charged with murder.

AFAIK the tidal warning systems are farther away, out in the ocean but the volcano (thus, the source of the waves) are much closer to the shore. So, even if the system was intact, I wonder how useful it would have been :/

This is sad... I've been to Koh Phiphi Island in Thailand and still remember the warning and information signs pointing to the escape paths in case of a tsunami. Just the thought of it gives shivers down my spine...
