Title: Finally sorted the Watches
Post by: gerleatherberman on August 07, 2018, 08:10:48 AM
The watch hobby has been neglected as of late, so I decided to dedicate this evening to sorting out the watch boxes and deal with watches laying all over the house. Got the watches sorted into five boxes and a tackle box for overflow. I wonder if, since TimeLord LV. 3 is five watches, if I could be Dr. Who.
j/k..haha

Anyway, here are the boxes. Let me know what you think about the sorting. I did it based on how much I like the watches. Although, if they are in the main two boxes, I really like them. I don't have a focus in this hobby, so there are many many different brands and models to deal with. :ahhh

Box 1:
Newer watches-

Box 2:

Box 3:
Omega watches-
They look great, but three of them need a full service.

Box 4:
"Beater watches"-

Box 5:
Cigar box with "smaller" men's vintage watches.
Watches sitting on top of box-

Tackle box:
Misc watch stuff. Mostly non-working watches, but some working watches I don't care much for and might use for parts, bands, parts, etc. Extra bands, pins, and etc.

That is a great collection, JR! Invicta is a favorite of mine as well. You've got some hard to find models there.  :like:
You have a nice assortment and variety. Something for every occasion and clothing.

I appreciate G-Shock type watches, but haven't worn anything digital is so long.
I've got a fake G-Shock somewhere I bought, because I was dating a woman who was into fitness and stuff at the time(and also wore a G-Shock). I had a hard time reading the digital face(opposite of most people). :ahhh
I'll post a picture of the fake G-Shock if I can find it. You may get a laugh from seeing it. It is blue. Like BLUE blue.  :P
Title: Re: Finally sorted the Watches
Post by: gerleatherberman on August 08, 2018, 06:23:31 AM
Found the fake-shock.

The battery must be 6 years old and still works. :)

I put it on and think I might like it if it weren't so blue. :ahhh

I wish I had bought a real one and in a more neutral color.

For some reason when I saw that totally blue watch I wanted to turn it around it was as if it was upside down,
Yeah, there’s some interesting watches, one I just gave to our older son for his graduation, not that he’ll ever use it, but it’s a self winding, so if he never does use it and then some day decides to, all he has to do is give it a couple spins and set it. As for the others the only two that I’ve used for the last maybe 6yrs are those two Casio’s, so totally opposite of you haven’t worn analog in so long, besides most of those watches are battery and are dead, although a couple weeks ago I did take one in to have the battery replaced, a very unique invicta, not only is it both analog and digital but also atomic. I posted about it on the watch subject on here, even put a video of it setting itself, kinda freaky if you ask me cause there’s no crown for you to wind it! Another reason I like that one Casio, both solar and atomic, so just wear it, and that’s it! The other is just solar so every so often it needs a few sec adjustment to be spot on..

I understand the battery ordeal! I started changing batteries in the cheaper watches I have and worked my way up to the pricier ones (like the Movado 800 Chrono).
Now, if I want to wear a battery watch, I pop a battery in and go. 20 of the 62 watches pictured take batteries, so one can't afford to pay to have the batteries changed(I pay about $0.25-$1.50 per battery, depending on the type), versus $8-$12 a watch to have the jeweler do it. Just watch out for those gaskets and get proper tools (case wrench in particular). :ahhh

Fortunately, the other 42 are automatic and wind-up.  I prefer mechanical and automatic though. I don't have an auto-set yet, but so plan on getting one at some point. :) i like that big Invicta Atomic Automatic. :tu:
I had a cheapo atomic setting watch a long time ago, but it wasn't nice like your Invicta.

Yeah but the trick with the battery ones is just pop the crown out when your not using it, it just turns it off cause your setting it, then when you want to use it, it’s ready for you to set the pop the crown back in and your ready to go.. I think I’m going to wear one I haven’t worn in a while today rather then a Casio..

Definitely worth sorting. If just to move them around, wind them, install new batteries, remove old batteries(before they corrode), and wiping them off. :)

Cool! Gotta give all of them some run time to keep the movements from freezing up. Mechanical and battery movements suffer from that.

I don't usually do the crown out position. Mainly, because I like to keep them running to ensure the lubricants in the movement pivots stay in place. Periodically I put the watches face down or on their sides to run as well. This keeps lubricants from moving only to one plate of the movements.  :ahhh

I wish this one was an automatic, but it sill has a good look I think. New battery (I had a common 377). The box goes to my Grand Diver Automatic. :)

Wore a diff one, so three diff ones this week, this ones automatic but in a diff way, still needs a battery but notice there’s no crown to set it? It’s atomic, you set a few things to get it going then it sets itself but then come like 2-4am it stops then reads the radio waves from out in Colorado and completely sets itself..

I apologize, Nick. I did not notice the reply until this evening. That is a beautiful watch! I like the fact that is has patina, but still looks good. I think the term for those is "survivor", when a vintage watch hasn't been touched(as far as resto work) and still looks good. Vintage mechanical chronographs are quite a thing to behold.  Thanks for sharing.

Here, I made my little knife showcase back in  05? It was originally a phone/equipment charging stand, a outlet strip would be under that leather along with the plugs, then just a little wire would come up so all you had to do is put whatever electronic device on the leather and let it charge, the back section is a perfect fit for all the magazines I used to get, then a little over was the pen slot, but after joining this forum you can see things changed  as for the watches I found a hanger for ties for like 25¢ At a tag sale, I had no clue what I was going to use it for, and it sat in a box for like 2yrs then well I bent it up and drilled it into the stand to hang the watches.. works for me!

Seems like a nice thing to have your gear kind of located in one station. Very cool. :)

Thanks
I love it, it used to be on top of the dresser but after we moved and the dresser is now a little further away I put a shelf up closer to the bed so now it’s within reach  but it’s nice to see/have the “most carried” gear right there! There’s hooks on the side where I used to hang all the sak, but since it’s closer I wouldn’t really be able to see them, so I moved the flashlights to idk where  but I like the station, I’ve kinda thought it would be better with a drawer underneath, just something maybe like 1-1/2” tall just enough to put more sak’s watches, and flashlights in! That would be nice!
JR
Here’s what the side used to look like..

With your current sized collection and the rate it is growing, a machinist's tool chest would be a good bet. It doesn't have glass, but the top closes and drawers close.
I have one that is 28" wide, 18" tall, and 12" deep. 6 small drawers and two wide drawers. I use mine for assorting my knife collection, but it would be good for EDC arrangement. I just don't have anywhere to put another one, so I need to make something custom. I might even snag some walnut scraps from work to make the front. Not sure yet.

The machinist's tool chest I have was made by a Chinese company called "Windsor" and was $79 at an import goods tool store (Harbor freight). It is assuredly a differe different brand in the U.K., but I think you could probably find one. :)

I've never seen such a machinist's tool chest over here...

I bought a mail ordener box and a small drawer box, both made out of wood.

They stand on my large cabinet that also supports my rotating Vic display and contain all multis that aren't Swiss and flashlights.

I can post a pic tomorrow after work...

Seems like GLBM has a Bulova Accutron :sa:

Jealousy...

Thank you, Nick! :hatsoff:

There are three Accutrons in the same row of watches. Different versions though. The round SS case with gold markers on dial is an ultra-rate 219 "half fork" movement. The movement and dial came from a ruined gold-plated case and the case was from a ruined movement/dial. Instead of running at the normal frequency that the older Accutrons do, it runs at half, thus only requiring one half of the electromagnetic coil system. The big gold case Accuquartz (still an Accutron..I'll explain) is solid 10K gold (about 1.5tOz) and has a basic 216 tuning fork movement, but with a quartz control curcuit, instead of the early solid state transistor controller. It claims to be a bit more accurate in keeping time, but in reality is is was a gimmick to use up old tuning-fork movement parts and still put quartz in the name to impress people of the time who thought quartz movements were the end-all be-all of horological perfection.   ::)
The Accutron with the big SS case and see-through dial is a Spaceview model with a more-common 214 movement. The time is set by a tiny "handle" that folds out on the back and turns. The 214 movement is the most reliable and most desirable of the early Accutrons, because of the robust nature. :)

:dunno:
Bar of hand soap or shower bar soap. I gently rub it on the wood with the grain until it feels slightly smooth. You don't want a thick layer on top of the wood. You'll probably know what I mean once you try one. Think like Ivory brand, Irish Sprong, etc. I am not sure what the most popular bar soaps you have in the U.K.
Stay away from liquid soaps though. Liquid soap will seep to far into the wood and cause expansion. Paste wax is ideal, but a bar of soap, rubbed into the slide and rail, is good.  :)

JR
Title: Re: Finally sorted the Watches
Post by: gerleatherberman on September 01, 2018, 03:28:14 AM
Sorry JR,

Vaseline should only be used on metal/plastic tracks, and NOT wood slides/grooves. It is petroleum based and will alter the molecular structure of the wood fiber surface as it seeps in. It'll work well for a while, until the wood swells and starts getting stuck. Unles you have a mini chisel-plane on hand, I'd avoid using vaseline. If you don't have paste wax or a bar of soap, just wait to put anything on the slides and grooves. It isn't like they will wear out in a few months. You've got time to acquire what you need. Some drawer slides on furniture take a hundred years of moderate use before needing to be modified and rebuilt. :tu:

Ya know, I get the idea, but I am weary of recommending anything I haven't had experience with as a furniture restorer.
And on top of that, there are many types of candles. Beeswax would be the only type I would try. But, beeswax candles are uncommon and hard to differentiate from other candle types if you don't mess with candles often. :ahhh

It's cool. This thread has been riding off the rails since page one.
The nature of the thread allows for a lot of derailment, so it is cool. :)

Sorry to read that the box is pricey where you're at! Might be something you'll run up on one day for a reasonable price. :)

How to make your new machinist chest into a disorganized hoard chest.
The top is full of about 1/6th of my excess watch parts and bands.
The two narrow top drawers are full of pocket watches and analog stop watches.
The two down are full if lighters and measuring devices/tapes.
Below that are two drawers full of traditional knives.

Last photo shows the three pocket watch dome-displays with the three watches I picked to hang in them. :)
I will be looking for some more of these displays in the future.

You know, all this time I think I’ve been looking in the complete opposite direction. I’m after a good strong watch with number hr markers rather then dots, day/date, 5-55, and automatic, and yet I’ve been looking at dive watches, but something cought my eye last night, a aviator watch? Typical standard Chinese movement.
But they work, keep good time and are easily replaceable by a whole new watch.
There are litteraly thousands of watches with that movement in the same price range. Gold, silver, black, rose, blue, ...
Search around and buy something you really like. Be sure to check places like aliexpress, dx and miniinthebox. (And many more)

I was having a problem with storing my watches. Years ago, I bought a small 6 watch wooden case at a local jewelry store but quickly found out it wasn't meant for large watches. End result, I couldn't close the solid wooden lid. That caused another issue in that I do have a few solar watches and they do like exposure to light. I also had a few recent watch purchases that were stored in their fancy retail boxes. I found this 24 watch case on Amazon, and it just came in today. I was uncertain as I couldn't find any mention of very large watches hitting the lid. I took a chance, and am happy to say this case will hold your largest watches. Plenty of clearance for the largest of watches. I may need another at a later date, or just keep this one for those I intend to use.

The toolkit looks nice as well. It is similar to the stuff I use, except I don't have the movement mount. Probably need to get one at some point.  I have never looked back after getting a 3-point case back wrench. The 2-point is good for scratching the case back. :ahhh

Not a big fan with Citizen Eco drives. I have 3 and all of them need to be sent back to the company to get a new battery installed. My Casio solar...never an issue. I read that the Eco Drives should last up to 10 years. I am lucky if I get a few years before they die.

Huh, I heard their good. The two gshocks that I have which are solar haven’t given me any problem, the one is atomic so that stays on time, the other is about 5sec a week off but as far as battery they’ve never gone below a full charge, I take that back, the one dropped to a mid charge, I had to stick it in the window for the day and it was back to a full charge but that’s because I didn’t wear it months, I just fig a citizen would be a good addition,,

Don't let me dissuade you. I just have had nothing but bad luck with them...and considering two of them are top end Skyhawks...it is painful to have to keep servicing them due to a dead battery. For the Skyhawk...this will be its second battery replacement. Those gshocks are Casio right? I have never had an issue with my Casio Pathfinder.

Chako,
Now that you possess a nice set of watch tools, you can likely change the capacitor cells in the Citizens. I found a new capacitor cell replacement for $27 on eBay for mine. It installed like a watch battery, but did have to be inserted in a peculiar way (since it had a special tab on the (-) side). Not all of them have the tab though. :)

Yes Casio, my fav is a 6900, it’s my everyday watch, I’m just looking for another watch but not digital, just don’t need the timer, stopwatch, or alarm, I just want the time, day and date, and preferably one that I don’t have to change the battery..

A Seiko automatic diver possibly?  :pok:  :pok:  :pok:

I know they do not come with numerals on the face...but they do come in nice colours. A side benefit, you will never have to replace a battery...preserving your water proof rating. That and they come with the nicest nicknames in the industry.

The ones, I thought about your search for, were analog with Arabic numerals. I can't remember if they had minute marks though.  :)

I had been having trouble with that Wenger watch I got for free. Stops intermittently and I have to open the back and take out/install the battery. So that one has been sidelined.

This watch would not run with a new battery a while back and I forgot to take the new battery out when I put it in the parts box. I saw it today and it was running. Guess the capacitor reformed sitting in the box. It runs well now. Made in Germany and Solid Titanium by 'The Watch People'. I bought it in NYC when I lived there and it say without a good battery for years. I am glad it is working now, because it wasn't cheap at all. Super light weight and very thin. A good dress watch.  :woohoo:

Pretty much, an analog with numbers such as 1/5-2/10-3/15-4/20 I’m sure you get the point, and a day/date and of course solar or self winding, I’m still kinda leaning to that citizen, but hey I got till late December..

Cool beans, JR!

About one month ago I would have bet some cash I'd never buy the tough plastic cased watches and only had the blue no-name I bought to try and impress an ex-girlfriend.
I like the clunky Casios more than I thought I would. :)
Three new Casios in a little over a week.  :assimilate:

I can see these watches being perfect for moving about and not worrying about damaging them so much.  :)

Three in a week, nice, I’ll be happy with just one! The little guy needed a new carabiner for his school bag so I saw a few and wasn’t sure what color he would want so I had to give him a selection, right? So I bought 4, he picked but going out again today I saw another cool carabiner so I added to the collection,
Hey it does something some watches do, it  glows!

Thank ya, JR.

Still going through some more boxes and found these two I bought a year or two ago. I had been looking for them for a while now.  :ahhh

OMG, cute..
Here this is almost perfect, but it’s cheap, and I’d probably go for a metal vs plastic..

The gruen dive watch in the tackle box looks interesting. Any info on it? Is it one of the broken ones?

Aside from needing a service(movementi s fine, but just won't stay running), crystal, and correct case-back; it is pretty neat. The bezel rotates on it as well. It is a 17J manual wind, and has one serious issue, the back isn't the correct case back. The OG screw-on back is missing and a generic case-back was pressed on.
Hopefully a correct case-back can be sourced at some point.

Hopefully you can source a back for it. It's a very cool looking watch!

Sorry I didn't see your reply, gustophersmob! :ahhh
Thank you and Indeed. I will be looking for more parts watches to find a back for it. The only issue is that, unlike typical watch case backs with male(outward facing) threads, the Gruen diver needs a case back with female (inward facing) threads.

Today was kind of cool. A friend of mine just gave me this digi/ana 165ft "dive watch." Model 'FMDAW021-372' with dead batteries. I had some dollar-store batteries (I won't put in good watches) laying around and popped them in(one 377 cell and one 2016 cell).  It works great and even has a rotating bezel. I used a lighter(to heat up) to reform the band to contour my wrist. Those old rubber bands get hard and straight after not being worn. One of my pet peeves is the hard rubber bands on cheap watches. A little heat(lighter or heat gun) fixes it right up. :)
Not a bad looking beater watch and water proof to boot. Should last a few weeks at work. >:D

That looks nice for a beater watch.

Now to go through the dreaded "I know this isn't a special item and it doesn't matter if it gets scratched, but I DON'T WANNA SCRATCH IT!". :ahhh

Box 3:
Omega watches-
They look great, but three of them need a full service.

Box 4:
"Beater watches"-

Box 5:
Cigar box with "smaller" men's vintage watches.
Watches sitting on top of box-

Tackle box:
Misc watch stuff. Mostly non-working watches, but some working watches I don't care much for and might use for parts, bands, parts, etc. Extra bands, pins, and etc.

Nice collection! Can I ask what the top right watch is in the "beaters" photo?  Is that brass?

Thank you much, clown!

Indeed, it is one of those 1980s/1990s brass mil-spec-replicas that were sold on TV infomercials aimed at WW2 veterans.
I have had a couple of them, but combined the two into one really good one using the best parts from each. :)

Very cool.  I think it looks great! I'll have to keep an eye out for one.

If I pick another one up I'll PM you. I've seen them at yard sales, markets, and the store I work at from time to time. Usually less than $10 and just needing a good cleaning, leather strap and battery.
