Title: JA,s OHT challenge.
Post by: JAfromMn on August 29, 2013, 06:15:01 PM
The challenge is going to be how long this review /topic is going to last. I do have a fairly nice tool collection I like to use but I'm down to using only one hand as I broke my left index finger
we will see how long it takes until I switch back to my old habits of carrying a different tool almost every day.

we are on day 2 of me using the oht as my only multitool I'm going to use.

I'm going to try keep track of how much I use it and what for. With pics when I can.

its a very well made tool is about all I can say about it so far.

I have not used it yet but she is on my belt ready to go.

I've been using a shovel and that's about it yesterday and so far today.

I hope its as good a tool as it looks.

:)

Lunch Break update

well the oht got its first and second use

the first was opening a door held close with a Phillips screw.
I was a little unsure of the almost 3d Phillip but it works.

the second task it seen was using the blade to make a pointer steak
it worked well.

Arn't you supposed to name the tool before the torture begins?

Kirk,

LOL

JAfromMn didn't say it is going to be a torture test...and best of luck with the OHT, hope your hand recovers quickly. :)

I guess I didn't think about a name for her.

I know she's a she .

here are some more pics while I'm on break.

I used the blade to cut a water bottle in half to make a scoop to empty water from a tire I'm going to put on a dump truck.

I also used the pliers to hold on to a hot pully key while I ground it down to fit in a lawn mower.

I'm really liking the one hand opening of all the tools. Makes using it easy :)

I took off from work a little early today so I can try get my own lawnmower running.

I used the large flat driver to remove the air cleaner so I can look at the carburetor.

well see if I can get her running again. I can't figure out what is wrong with it.

Nice thread JA :tu:  I look forward to how the OHT works for you, but I hope your finger heals quickly.  Personally I don't think the OHT is for me due to it's size and it just doesn't look like one that I would care for.  I'm glad it's helpful to you though, and I am interested to see how you treat it ;)

Thanks Man

It is a large tool but I usually carry a Vic swisstool or sog powerlock to work so it's size doesn't bug me any and its got to be a bit lighter . Feels like it to me anyway :P

Good job so far. I think you're one of the first people to put the OHT through its paces and not just write it off as terrible.

well it may not be the perfect tool  I think it's still a dam good one.

the only fault I have with it so far is its lack of a file.

it could also use a scissors but I can live without them. I can back it up with a micra or sak with a scissors. The file is not so easy to get by without.

all and all I'm still very happy with the oht.

I really like this thread. A Leatherman being used for jobs that i would encounter! No IEDs, C4, ARs etc. Plus i lost the use of my left hand for a year so the OHT is a great idea, believe me ive been there! The irony of my left thumb being held togther with titainium plate as i tried in vain to open my Charge Tti was funny; now i look back! yeah, i want to see more of this.

yeah I'm afraid this oht won't be seeing any warzones LOL

I'm installing a new mobile home today so I'm not sure how much Il use the oht but its on my belt if I need it.

I did use the pliers this morning to tighten a battery clap. I didn't get a pic but here she is on one of the work trucks resting.

I myself also wasn't sold on the oht. For its size I think it should have more tools.

that being said. I'm almost impressed with the oht. I got one out of need not want and its been a great tool so far.

I figured I would dislike the oht but for what it is" a all one hand opening tool" its not bad at all.

all the tools are super easy to get at and very well thought out" lay out wise".

:) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

I got to say its one of the best in a multi I've used.

I also used the pliers to tighten some bolts holding a rear view mirror but I didn't have time to get a pic.

I don't want to screw up my own topic buy adding another tool but if the tool can only do jobs the O.H.T. Can't I don't see how it can change my topic much.

You should have just used a Wave or Charge AL for all the tools needed. :D

I thought I had a trade worked out on a trail guide but I'm pretty sure it fell through on me.

I was looking for a Mountaineer or Mountaineer lite but a guy hit me up with a trail guide.

its a yeoman with a metal file.

it would have been nice thin pocket carry.

o well

I got to give the the 154cm wire cutters some use this afternoon.

they work on both the thick wire fence I was fixing and the thin wire I used to hold them before I got it bolted together.

the wire fence was some hard stuff to cut but the oht could handle it and was not damaged any.

It's too bad the trade deal fell through.  My Yeochamp is the same thing, with the fish scaler added.  I wasn't aware there was a trail guide model.  So I guess mine could be thought of as a trail guide plus fish scaler.

Woo-Hoo! Love the wire cutting pics! We call that heavier wire 'bull-wire' over here. When i go out specifically to fix our fences i will carry a pair of snips made for that job. BUT as you know when your just out and find you NEED to cut wire ill use my Leatherman which has always got the job done. What about the screwdrivers? Are they as short as people make out? Oh and glad to see you havent had to disarm a bomb yet!  ;)

no bomb disposal pics yet. I should keep my eyes open for
I.E.D.'s under some of the houses i end up working on

seriously though I think the oht has such great wire cutters not only because of the 154cm replaceable blades that seem to cut so well but more importantly the handle shape, size and how comfortable they are to grip really hard on.

now about the drivers.

I don't think there so bad. The flat head is a bit short but the Phillips is about average.

I just used the serrated blade for the first time cutting some twigs off a branch and the plane edge blade to make marshmallow roasting sticks.

I'm going to have to find something thick to cut that might be more of a challenge.

the oht serrated blade cut through the small branches like butter.

sorry no pics its to dark :P

first I used the plane edge blade to make a glove that fits around my finger splint.

not long after I had to fill diesel on a truck. I couldn't get the cap off so oht to the rescue

It is odd that there's no file on a tool like that.  I would think something like the can opener wouldn't fit in with the idea of OHO tools, but that's just my opinion.

When I rocked Waves and Charges I only used the file once , taking a minor burr off a lock cylinder . I've used the saw on SAK's ,  Swisstools , and Spirits quite a bit to cut PITA nails .

I'd use the file mostly for trimming styrofoam skirting .

if I'm not doing that I don't miss it much.

I'm just used to having a set of tools always on me and a file is part of my normal tool set.

I'm still planing on getting a sak to back up the oht's lacking tools

a Vic awl will be a bonus and will not be redundant if I use the oht's small driver as it was intended.

:) I'm a nerd :)

Ha, yeah, I can see how that would be cool.  Any tool being OHO is a major plus really.  There are many times when you may need one hand to hold something or whatever and it would be handy and convenient to be able to deploy whatever tool you needed with the other hand without having to let go of the item.  Still, I can't even count the number of times I've needed a can opener (for that intended purpose anyway) and not been within reach of my actual kitchen can opener.  I know it would be handy to have in a situation where you're having to survive on canned goods in the wilderness or something, but in my experience, that doesn't happen often ;)

Really glad this is working out for you JA, and you've found a workaround for the injury  :tu: I'm not a fan of the OHT for myself from what I've seen of it, but it's great to see folks paired up with a tool which suits them  :D

As an aside, I've sometimes found that the point on that style can opener can work quite well in place of a file without knackering up the smaller drivers (depending on the job at hand). That's what I do if carrying a Wenger SAK and need a sharper awl than the one of the backspring  ;)

If I was going to me  >:D I'd say the Gerber Grappler has a OHO file  :pok: .... but seen as I'm  I won't say that ...  :P
(just larking around  ;) and it looks like the OHT is far better suited for your needs TBH  :salute: )

Well I have been giving the oht a good workout for about a week now and I got to say the I'm impressed how comfortable this tool is to use.

The oht may be lacking a couple of tools but the tools it has are all very good and the comfort this tool has more than makes up for a extra trip to the tool box now and then.

the two tools I've yet to use are the can opener and the rescue blade. I think the gutting /rescue blade  will be a good as a  plastic sheeting cutter but I have yet to try it. The can opener I doubt Il every use to open a can but it will work as a scraper blade if not a awl.

some tools are a joy to use and this is one of them to me. :)

On plier size: I think the OHT head -seems- smaller, because you don't see the pivot. It's hidden by the handles, this contrary to any of the other tools. This makes the head look a lot smaller, even if it's actually as big or bigger.

Well I'm home after a long day at work and I got a few thoughts about the oht .

The one hand tool might stay part of my work gear for longer than I thought because of one huge reason.
IT'S A ONE HANDED TOOL.
A very good thing when working in tight spaces. It was so nice knowing my multitool was on my right side and I could use it without trying to unfold tools when I was working in a crawl space under a home. It was very tight I could not even crawl. I had to slide.

I wish I could have got a pic of the whole I cut into some vinyl siding. The little plane edge blade cuts clean. Its got a good grind and its very pointy. The sheepfoot blade got to put its teeth into some rubber hose we use for ac water drainage. Again a nice clean cut.

I did have to make a trip to my tool box for a file to dull up some metal duct work. Besides that I couldn't have picked a better multitool to get my work done today.

One would think that since this tool has been marketed as a "tacti-cool" tool aimed at military types, that it would be resilient enough to stand up to generous doses of sand, mud, crazy humidity, and the whole spectrum of conditions that could be experienced on duty. A few years ago, I carried my Gerber MP400 with me to Qatar from Sept-Jan, and it suffered no ill effects from a few sandstorms, and some the highest humidity I have ever encountered.

Although, Minnesota mosquitoes may be something that Leatherman didn't plan on. Keep that baby on a chain!

I might have to test the oht and see if it jams up or not.

I'm going to pack it full of sand and gravel later today to see if it locks up or not.

That's what I'm talking about! That is pretty astounding actually, that's a lot of crap in that OHT. But if LM really intended this tool for use by the military in the combat zones of the world, there is a chance that somebody could find themselves in a situation similar to what you have simulated. Glad to see it not only survived, but was functional.

Leatherman should give you a cut of OHT sales after this - I want one now, too. Lol

It's your fault it got sand in it  :twak: >:D

I know I said I wasn't gonna try hurt this leatherman on porpoise. But I had to find out if it will lock up on me if it gets pack full of crap.

so here's my little experiment .

first I used it as a little shovel to fill it full of small pebbles and dirt/sand

I had to take a pic with the flash to show how full of debris it was.

+1  :tu:  very impressed that the OHT was able to recover so quickly, and that you were able to simply shake the debris out and flick the pliers open without using a brush or anything to clear out the debris.

thanks, Joel... my interest in this tool has gone WAY up since you started this thread!  :P

Thanks again Nhoj

  I just had a idea

the oht has a threaded whole in it for a gun cleaning rod.

I'm going to try find a small file to cut down and put the right size threads on to fit the whole in the oht.

I'm unsure if it will work or not

 like  I said it's just a idea.

if it works it will work in the mutt the same way.

I'm becoming a bigger and bigger fan on the rescue/gutting blade
I used it to trim 100s of feet of 6mil plastic and I got to say it works excellent .
its turned into my favorite blade to use on this tool.
safe to use and cuts like a laser through plastic sheeting.

it didn't take much effort using a lanskey dog bone sharpener.

I'm going to drop a link to a lanskey dog bone  for Spyderco

its all the sharpener you need to maintain all the blades of the oht.

http://www.knifecenter.com/item/LSLTRIM/Lansky-Dog-Bone-Style-Sharpener

I highly recommend buying one if you lack the tools it takes to sharpen serrated edge blades and own a oht

No bunny movement so far tonight. Hopefully it snuck in the nest when I wasn't watching.

I'll check in the morning for movement and I'll figure out what I need to do. Hopefully nothing and I get to watch baby bunnies grow up. :)

off topic sort of

Hey, nothing wrong with going off topic sometimes.  Seems to be a fairly regular occurrence, and I know I've caused it more than once ;)  Take care of those bunnies, and keep up the good work on this thread man :tu:

I'm having my Mrs. call the humane society for the bunnies.

I'm not sure if I have the time to take care of them.

It's only important in the first few days. And then again it also depends on the mother bunny. Some may even eat their young and others will act as if nothing happened. Glad to hear she came back. :tu:

And now back to our regular programming ...

What did you use the OHT for today. :D

The oht got put to the test today.

first this morning I installed two mailboxes with it using its Phillips and flat drivers also used the small driver as a awl again.

then it got to work on a old plow truck we keep running to abuse snowplowing. Pliers tightened the battery clamps flat driver to adjust the carburetor

after lunch me and the oht had a used home to install. The strap cutter cut the straps holding bundles of wood shims and it cut many feet of 6mil plastic. Also cut some wire ties .

I have yet to mod a file to fit into the oht's cleaning rod whole.

I did find that a normal flat file will not fit. I will have to use a round or triangle file.

I've been to busy to make one but I will when work slows down.

I do.

i use it for smoothing out styrofoam skirting on homes also I work with metal duct work.
I try remove most of the sharp edges before I put it up
also making a clean metal surface for ground wires .

a file is just handy for me in my tool  .

its one less thing I can forget.
also if I just need to use it a little and its not worth carrying a full size one with me all day. :)

you could make a bit driver that would fit but it would only work to tighten and its a small screw I don't think it could handle much torx.

Today 's oht action

It was very helpful getting a ac unit put in at work today
First I used it to remove the front panel on a furnace. The tabs holding it on are very stiff the first time there opened. The flat driver worked fine to pry it open.
its next task was to remove a screw I couldn't get at with the nut driver. Flat screw driver to the rescue
(http://i1211.photobucket.com/albums/cc421/JAfromMn/temporary_zps8fee1145.jpg)

prying off the break away sections of the access panel for installing the ac condenser

after I got the ac in.

I needed to clip a large zip tie I used to hang the cable tv wires with.

and the last task I used her for was to twist a hydraulic jack release to lower a home.

I also used it to cut a bunch of plastic and tape I didn't get a pic of.

I never really cared for if my multitool had oh opening blades but it didn't take long for me to get hooked on the oh opening pliers and drivers.

I still carry my Chapman ratchet and bits but I use them alot less because the oht,s are so quick.

well I got to feed the dogs and myself Il post some pics of the can opener in action in a hour or so.

I may have been slightly less than charitable in my views of the OHT previously  (particularly due to the contentious way it is marketed)  ;) but the bottom line is it is working very well for you, and quite frankly, that's what matters most :tu: I still can't see it being a tool for me and my needs. I would have little need for a strap cutter and all those flat drivers, needing instead scissors and awl much more frequently, but that's not a "failure" of the tool in any way, just that it suits other people better than me  :)

One of my (and other people's) criticisms has fell on the shortness of the blade and saw, although in truth I have personally found the short blade on the MP700 to be perfectly adequate for many (urban) chores. We can see the length is rather stubby compared to the body of the tool, but is there any chance of comparison pics to the length of the blade & saw on a 91mm Vic and 85mm Wenger please anyone?

Il take some pics when I get home 50ft-trad its about in-between a 91 Vic and a Wenger 80whatever mm saw. Closer to Wenger.

I haven't found the blades and tools to short for any task I've used it for. So far.
there sort but work very well. You get a good grip. Comfortable.

I think the folks at leatherman put a lot of thought into the oht. All the tools and functions it has that I've used work very well.

I wish they would make a more civilian oht its close to being a really great tool now. a file and awl are needed to make it a much better tool for every day use by normal working people. A scissors would also be nine but then I wouldn't have a reason to carry my micra :)

I love mine but I carry a tool box with me . :P

Hey Joel,

Glad you are getting to test this OHT daily.  I dont own one but heard quite a few negatives about it shortly after it came out.

These are the true testing of MT's that I enjoy reading.  The ones that actually are put to a test and not one that just shows the tools and someone just opening the package to get the MT out! LOL

I agree that it doesnt have all the exact tools I would want but it not a bad setup, just add a sak and your set.

To me I dont think they are at a good price point for what you get! Just my opinion though but I would try one if I found one at the right price or found a trade deal! :)

I also heard that someone modded the package opener into an awl and it works/looks great!

:D

The oht had a pretty easy day today.

I used it to clip a few wires and the serrated blade to cut some drain house but I didn't get any pics its to dark under houses to get a good one.

I did get a pic of putting a plate back on my work truck.

and here's the requested pic for  50ft-trad

surprisingly the oht's saw is shorter than a 84mm wengers by a centimeter or 2
the Vic saw is quite a bit longer.

edit

saw thoughts

I would have never thought the oht's saw was a little shorter than a standard wenger

It's never felt like it was to short when I've used it.

the handle is comfortable to use / easy to grip and hold when sawing.

I'd prefer a replaceable blade but the saw it has works and seems to stay sharp .

one hand opening kicks ass :tu:

The Blades might be a little short, but they work rather well and sometimes you just need a small blade to get into tight places. As for the saw,  it is a beast. I tend carry a regular blade with my multi and it seens like the LOHT was made to compliment a dedicated knife.

That saw is actually even shorter than I though  :o :o BUT at least it's outboard on this tool, which means that more of the blade is usable (unlike the Rebar / ST300 etc)

I just used the oht to pry open 5 locked mailboxes that where missing keys

the flat driver worked to get them open with no damage to the tool.

the only other tool I've used to pry them open was the crate opener on a swisstool.

this is one tough leatherman.

I used a lot of force /border line abuse/
ive bent cheap screwdrivers trying to do the same thing.

very true they should be.

some though are not

but I do think as long as i use the right tool for the right job i shouldn't break one. Pushing a tool over its limitations leads to broken tools.

Todays' oht work

I was putting in ac again on a few homes today.

here's what I used the oht for.

the first time I used it this morning was getting a screw out that I couldn't get at with the drill/driver

I needed to get a pic of this task I usually do under houses.

I don't try bring my phone with me anymore.

I'm on my 3rd Nokia this year already  :o

cutting the clear rubber hose I use for drainage

tightening a plastic cap on copper tubing for ac refrigerant. I put these little caps on and take them off each line I install. Two lines per ac unit. one feed one return.
I also usually do this under the home but I'm trying to get a decent pic of each tool in use. I'm a nerd  >:D
(http://i1211.photobucket.com/albums/cc421/JAfromMn/temporary_zps88262543.jpg)

 pocket dump
the oht does all the work. I carry the rest because I'd miss it.
ok I need the light too lol

well styx

I haven't been hindered by the Phillips driver its plenty long. The flat driver on the other hand is to short.

hmm changes besides a file. Hmm

ditch the can opener for a awl would be my first suggestion.

I'd like to see a scissor offered by putting in a combo edge blade and losing the serrated blade.

leatherman should really make a civilian oht. This is a good tool. It just needs a little work to be a excellent one.

Joel,

I wasnt really asking if you had the bit extender for the juice line, just wondered if one would fit that OHT so you could adapt other bits and in the case wihere the flat driver is too small for the job. :D

I kinda thru that out there to see if anyone would comment if they had both or if they know if would fit or not fit!  Anyone?

Curious, ya know!  It would be a big plus if it does!  :tu:

I didn't get to the file today.

Il get it done Monday.

today I used the oht to cut a lot of wire and to tighten a value missing it's handle.. The one hand opening was very useful when working in tight spots.

photobucket is having issues so sorry no pics for now

edit photobucket is still down.

I'm more interested in pics of the tear down and reassembly of the OHT itself. How does it come apart, what it looks like apart and how easy it is to put back together.

I'm also happy you got your file.

A few quick questions for you JAfromMn.

How does the length of the tools on the OHT work for you. I have been reading a lot about how short all the tools are including the blade and saw. Honestly I have been going back and forth if I should save for one, but the tools being so "stumpy" is making me second guess buying one. Just wanted to get your opinion on it. Thanks.  :tu:

I'm not sure I only have seen the oht.

 does somebody have both. ???

I'd like to see a pic if they do.

I don't think they are the same even if they have the same 154cm cutters.
The spring loaded plier head is quite a bit different I'm sure it changes how they feel when there cutting.

hey captain Il try give you some answers'

I don't think the shortness of any of the tools has ever hindered me from doing something. Its just I'm used to longer tools like the swisstool has.

they are short as they have to be to get 8 outside opening tools. :tu:

The Phillips on the oht is not a full Phillips but more like a cross between the wingman/sidekicks and a normally drive. 2.5d if that makes any sense.

I'd be more worried if I didn't carry a driver set with me.  I haven't had to use it yet because the oht couldn't get the job done.

I carry my multitool mostly for the pliers the now

i carry the oht now because it has been working so well i don't think a different tool would work better for me on the job.

How did you scratch up the pliers so much?

there not scratched they had a bunch of aluminum lines from twisting the outside wires off a 220v cord.

no worries they look fine now. A little black oxide damage.

It was to long so I cut it down a little.

I got to thread it again but I should have it done again today.

why do I need a file. For making sharp metal ducting easier to work with and to smooth out foam.

well I shortened the file about a inch made it a bit more pointy then dropped it on the shop floor where it broke into 3 pieces.
ok I may have stepped on it a little too.

Il make a new one soon.

I am thinking I should try make a triangular file work also.

that is what I get for trying to improve something that already works.

<snip>

and here's the requested pic for  50ft-trad

surprisingly the oht's saw is shorter than a 84mm wengers by a centimeter or 2
the Vic saw is quite a bit longer.

edit

saw thoughts

I would have never thought the oht's saw was a little shorter than a standard wenger

It's never felt like it was to short when I've used it.

the handle is comfortable to use / easy to grip and hold when sawing.

I'd prefer a replaceable blade but the saw it has works and seems to stay sharp .

one hand opening kicks ass :tu:

Thanks for that JA  :tu:

That saw is actually even shorter than I though  :o :o BUT at least it's outboard on this tool, which means that more of the blade is usable (unlike the Rebar / ST300 etc)

The Blades might be a little short, but they work rather well and sometimes you just need a small blade to get into tight places. As for the saw,  it is a beast. I tend carry a regular blade with my multi and it seens like the LOHT was made to compliment a dedicated knife.
sent from my mobile

But it's tiny!  >:D All this praise for such a small saw  :P It must be like the vicious bunny in The Holy Grail  :D

Many thanks for the pics and comments guys, you've convinced me it's really not for me (thank you :D) but I'm very glad it's working so well for you two  :tu: :salute:

Does anyone know the saw length in inches?

Thanks!

While the OHT isn't for me (too big/heavy for my typical daily needs), I can see how it would be very useful to someone whose daily work requires the more convenient access to the tools (like you).  That's where it would beat out the Rebar or SuperTool, but you must see a reason for switching in the winter.  Perhaps because the tools will be more protected from snow, etc?

I love my Rebar :D

the rebar might be the tool that kills this thread.

I bought a new bo rebar a day or two before I broke my finger and started this topic

its in my safe now and it really wants out. It needs to be used.

I'm not going to yet. It can suffer.  >:D

Il need a complete tool kit on my person. I don't always have a tool box with me.

also I have to see this winter how the oht will handle being packed with snow and ice until I do I don't trust it. :(

True, it does seem the OHT may be a little lacking in that department.  Especially since you need a file, and the drivers may be longer or better to use on a SuperTool or Rebar.  I'm curious to see how the OHT handles winter conditions, not that I'm wishing for those conditions anytime soon... :P

What should my next work to be.

its gonna take awhile for me to save up so we can talk about it now.

the out will remain in service as my work tool until then.

I'm going to start carrying my old tools after work now that I can open them
 :) :) :)

I almost made it a month using the same tool all day everyday. Amazing.

the oht worked just as good at home as it did at work its just to big to carry for the little tasks I've used it for around home.

part 1 of the challenge is complete . 27 days of oht action.

And we loved reading all of the updates on how it performed!  :tu:

Because if this thread, I'm sure there are a few people that now want an OHT that otherwise wouldn't have considered one.

Now for JA's next challange..........  :D

Part 2

how long will the oht remain my work tool.

today she's been lending a hand snipping wire.

I'm gutting a home we are gonna scrap. "removal of all appliance's"

my old cold steel hawk did most of the hard work. It gives me a handle to grip so I can move water heaters /furnaces/stoves etc

I like the tan one the best sawman. It looks a lot less military.

I've no plans on replacing the oht any time soon.

I do need to replace the hawk with a more appropriate tool.

Looking at them you can see where one could work better for certain things, and vice versa.

I find the exchanger useful. I carry with a hacksaw blade locked in. The removable file is handy too.

Quick thought

if I had to pick between the rescue blade and a file and pick the rescue blade.

its been unbelievable handy.

zip ties, plastic wrap, plastic straps , string , light wire, window screen , Para cord , I'm sure I'm forgetting some all were cut clean and easy with the rescue blade.

Glad to hear you're feeling better and back to work.  It's cooled off around my neck of the woods, it was a chilly 66 degrees this morning at 6:30am.  Almost went back in the house for a coat.

On topic, I have to say I've enjoyed this thread, I'm still not totally sure I want an OHT, but I'll probably get one to try.  Large over all with small tools, no file and no scissors.  Just not sure where that's going to fit into my arsenal.

Thanks for posting this and for all the pics and thoughts!

I thought it is time for something new.

well I am home for the weekend

it was a long chilly day today.

the oht came in handy a few times today.

the one handed pliers saved my butt when I had to shut off a leaking water spigot and only had one hand I could use. It was a very low crawlspace. I would have had to crawl out open my tool and crawl back. A trip I'm glad I didn't have to retake because the oht could do the job.

now I'm going to take a very long very hot shower.

being cold and wet sucks Smurf

Almost 10000 views thanks everyone for following. :salute:

does anyone have a question about the o.h.t.

I've tried to get a decent pic off all the different tools in use if I've missed something your wondering about please ask :)

a few quick thoughts of mine on the o.h.t.

the action is as smooth as the day I got it. Every tool opens and closes easy with one hand locking / unlocking easily.

I need to get a pic of the little locking twist tab on one side of the tool . I rarely use it but its a nice feature. Its opposite the threaded whole for a gun cleaning rod. It holds the plier closed if you don't want it to slide open while using one of the outboard tools.

the blade holds a ok edge but I'd pay more for a better blade steel.

a civilian o.h.t. Is need with a file and a scissors again a upgraded blade steel would be a plus.

I like the rescue blade but I know most people would prefer a file .

i also think most would prefer a scissors to a serrated blade.

I'd like to see all of the above with a s30v combo edge blade. But that's me :) I know many would prefer plane edge.  :multi:

I'd like to see more colors and a stainless model.

I still have to pack the tool full of snow/ice and see if it will open.

one of my favorite saws on a multitool.

the black oxide coating is better than sog's but Victorinox's black oxide coating is way better.

I spend too much time thinking about my tools

the sheath is useable. It should hold up well but I'd prefer a leather sheath with a snap closer. There is no storage slot .

I'd also prefer a bit holder to the Phillips driver again that's just me.

I've used my o.h.t. Hard and its held up to all my abuse and still works flawlessly

I still have no plans on replacing my oht as my work tool but I will be adding my swisstool to my bag for winter . I normally would carry only one.

I still have a coyote oht I won from M.T.O I want to carry but that is going to be a topic of its own. Its resting in a digi camo skinith. :)

well that is enough thinking. :P

I've really enjoyed watching this thread  and it's great to see folks paired up with a tool that works so well for them  :salute: Personally, I still dislike the tool, but that doesn't stop this being a great thread  :D. For me the tool is too big, the blades and saw too small, no awl, no scissors, I have no need whatsoever for the strap cutter and O2 wrench ... and it's bloody ugly

I'm still going to keep watching this thread though - keep up the good work mate :salute:

the oht is way more comfortable to use.

I prefer a liner lock to Gerbers back lock

hmmm

I just would way rather carry a leatherman

off topic

Gerber lost me when I bought and broke the pliers off a suspension the same day.

Agreed!  :tu: I only asked the question because someone said X blows away Y without explanation or qualification ...

Personal needs and tastes also factor very highly in the evaluation. The OHT seems far better suited to you than the others mentioned, though the MP400 and MP700 would generally be far better suited for me. "Better" is very subjective

... and I'm rather indifferent about your last comment ;) I don't give two hoots where it's made so long as it does what I need, at a price I'm prepared to pay :D :D

Assembled, yes. But we know they outsource some of the parts. And I agree with Al, if the tool is well made, serves it's purpose and the QC is good, I don't care where it's made.

I used the pliers to close the value but it was way to dark for a pic

this afternoon I spent winterizing a few homes. I used the pliers to losen some nuts and screwdrivers to remove access panels it get at water heaters. Sorry no pics to busy to take any.

I first used my oht but it didn't work I would have broken it trying.

my swisstool would have done it with its large pry blade.

I'm also still waiting on a reply from leatherman.

I just got a reply from leatherman

I'm going to just paste it

Thanks for contacting Leatherman Tool Group, Inc.

In regards to your question about where the OHT is made; our one and only manufacturing facility of Leatherman tools is located in Portland, Oregon. We have been headquartered and manufacturing here for almost 30 years. We provide jobs for approximately 650 Portland-area folks and our facility is approximately 90,000 square-feet.

We are often asked why we do not mark our products with “Made in USA”, or why we used to and don’t anymore. We do have a few parts that come to us from outside the US. Regardless of how small the part may be, or the fact that upwards of 60% of the finish work needed to make these parts functional (even before assembly) still happens in our facilities here, we cannot mark “Made in USA/Portland” and still sell in the State of California. Rather than mark some tools one way and others another, we have tried to keep it simple and keep our markings to just the tool name itself.

If you have any other questions, let us know. We’re proud of our manufacturing facilities here and we invite folks who live in or visit the Portland area to join us for a tour. We give tours every Wednesday at 10:00 am and you can call 503-408-5550 to reserve a space.

Thanks for taking the time to inquire and for supporting our workforce here in Portland.

Kind Regards,

Where is the oht made , where where its parts made, is it made of USA steel, where  are they assembled, where is the sheath made

there response

Joes,

OHT is made and assembled in the USA, at our factory in Portland OR out of stainless steel.  The sheath is made in China.

I thought the same about the MUT, but I really enjoy having and using it. It's such a solid tool, and the onboard storage for the long bits is great.

Ive enjoyed reading this thread, and I wouldn't have probably bought a OHT if it wasn't for your thread here.  :D

I got it in on thursday and played with it for a bit.  Its not for me so I ended up returning it, but at least I know now.   ;)  Im just not a fan of the sliding plier style.  I can open the pliers on a regular wave or charge easier one handed than this sliding type, and then you get normal length tools.

Your thread was a good advertisement though, it made me order one to try that I didnt have any interest in before.  Maybe Leatherman should pay you to do stealth advertising. :D  We'll see JA's one piece tool challenge next.

I posted a pic of the gear I carry to show where my oht fits into it.

its my quick grab tool for just about everything .

its my wire cutters and pliers more than its used for anything else. Its flat head is my pry tool. Its not close to as good as the pry tool /large flathead of the swisstool I'm used to using but its worked so far and I haven't damaged or bent it. The rescue blade gets used often and is much handier than I thought it would be and is one of the reasons I am still carrying the oht.

I'm totally sold on the oht and the whole concept of the one hand tool.

depends where you are. if the shipping outweighs the price heavily and the wait is long then buying is not as good of an option

They only offer UPS and I believe that's a ploy to get you to buy more stuff to justify the high shipping cost. I used to buy from them until I discovered Miles Stairs' Survival Shop which sells pretty much the same things.

Thanks Monrogue

its take a lot of work and more $ than I have but I'm hoping I can make it work.
edit
post 2000 + a few.  :salute:

Here's hoping you can make it work!  Nothing beats having your own space to be able to go out and tinker in, and have setup just how you want.

Congrats on hitting the 2K mark too!!!

Well I think I tested the oht out enough that we all got a good feeling for the tool.

I'm going to wrap this challenge up.

I give the oht my stamp of approval.

I'll be starting a similar topic this time a brand new st 300 soon.

stay multi my friends  :multi:

I've been following your utlikey thread.

the main reason I want to give the st300 a try is because it looks like a bigger rebar.

I haven't used my rebar much but I know I like it.

Yeah, it really does have a better toolset. I wish they'd add the hammer to another MT though. I've used mine a couple of time at work to tighten up nails in crates and it worked great for that.

Either the Super Tool 300 or Swisstool.  None of the others appeal to me, but that's just my opinion.  I would like to see both of my picks put through the ringer so to speak to see what they can handle.

Don't get too excited. I don't know where he got this idea, though on what I assume is a completely unrelated note I own both a Rebar, and a camera phone, and have about three solid weeks of theatre tech and prop manufacturing/repair in my immediate future. Oh, and the first set goes up tomorrow.

Joel,

Because of the work you do, it is nice to see a variety of tasks being done by one tool and one tool only.  I think you should keep that concept going in your challenges and not have a whole pile of tools on you.

I would like to see one done with the ST300 you just got. :D

What tool would you all like to see me use next

Leatherman Super Tool 300
Leatherman Crunch
Victorinox Standard Swisstool
Gerber Grappler
Bear Jaws Super

all of the above I plan on challenging soon or later.

My vote would be Swisstool, ST300, Bear Jaws, in order of preference. It seems you'll be testing the ST300 and that's cool. I'm really interested in seeing how it performs.  :tu:

Between us id rather do the swisstool but I don't think using my old one would be fair.

OK I need a excuses to buy a new one.

Personally I'd love to see how the Grappler fares. I have one and wasn't convinced with it initially, but it did start to win me over when I'd used it a bit. That said, I didn't put it through the kind of heavy challenges that your line of work might subject it too, and if I was going to grab one of my Gerbers for something like that that it would probably be the Diesel. I'm still a little wary about a couple of aspects on the Grappler, and a JAfromMN challenge would no doubt answer those concerns one way or another  >:D

To be honest, I don't think it would be a challenge for the Swisstool  :D though it would be interesting to hear how you find it in comparison with other tools

My thoughts on that are the Crunch pliers are significantly better, but you have to "build" them before each use. As regards everything else, I find the Grappler is superior - namely longer drivers, better knife blade, prybar, more function, outboard and OHO throughout. It's also compatible with one of Gerber's hex driver tool kits - whereas the Crunch in comparison has a built in hex slot, but with no magnetic retention and you have to remove the adjusting screw which could easily be lost, rendering the tool an expensive paperweight.

I'd be very interested in seeing a Crunch vs Grappler go head-to-head though  :salute: as many people write off the Grappler immediately due to the plier capacity or slightly more fiddly means of adjustment, therefore "protecting" the failings (in my eyes) of the Crunch from appearing overshadowed by the Grapplers strengths

:D I know what you're saying. Some MTs are just :gimme: . Sadly, I can't justify the funds for further MT research for the time being, nor can I say that I use the ones I have a lot. I keep them for the times they'll come in handy, which means sporadically. It's good to know what can be done with a given MT, so I'm grateful for these reviews/torture tests

As usual, you raise a good point. For me, those two MTs have  >:D too many moving parts  >:D and that's the devil's lair for me.  :-\  :salute:

Well my cold weather test on the oht came out a little unexpected.

I might have got a little carried away but it could easily happen my world

I tumbled the oht around in snow while packing it into the blades and the body. THEN I Used a bottle of WATER with a spray head and sprayed water all over the tool. Inside + outside

results

the oht pliers would not fully open after I smacked it around to remove the ice I could

I tried very hard using gloved and bare hands to try get it open.

it would not open until I brought it inside.

the outside opening blades and tools all opened / locked after a little struggle .

I didn't get a pic of the outside tools because I dropped my phone in the snow. Dam it. It  works but still pisses me off.

well I think the oht will spend its life inside in the winter.

its way better that I know now than find out later.

still sucks. I was going to start edcing it.

if one of the mods could fix my pics it would be much appreciated. I can't get anything but what I posted.

The black one I used for this review held up well.

I haven't really did much abuse to my brown and black one but it should hold up well from what I've seen of other tools.

Sliver I have no idea
