Title: What Rescue Tool do you use, and why?
Post by: donvito on March 12, 2009, 09:00:55 PM
I personally don't use any, my current line of work does not require it. I do own a Benchmade Rescue Hook which has a nice design IMHO. My friend a Paramedic with FDNY has a Vic Rescue Tool on his duty belt that I gave him as a gift.

I have finally used the Malice clip that benchmade gave me!

The other day I attached the rescue hook 5 to my jumbo versipack so now I have it everywhere I go :tu:

I wouldn't mind a ResQme to try out, but haven't found anyone who sells it yet

My dad has a resQme and I think its a POS Once I went to a junkyard to test out the glass breaker and it failed to break any windows. Also the blade(Xacto type) can't be replaced.

Could be it possible that your Dad got a dud? I've heard a couple reputable organizations recommend them for keeping in vehicles?

EDCDepot carries them and ships internationally.  Plus, Marc is a great guy to deal with!

I'm guessing that you either had a dud or was not trying to break windows by using the breaker near the edges of the glass as it was intended.  They would not be able to sell this product if the glass breaker wasn't functional.

I carry a ResQMe with me at all times and so does the wife.

That's because you are meant to use it near the edge.

James McGowan is a professional firefighter in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Due to his passion for the outdoors, he started making “hard working knives” and joined the Canadian Knifemakers’ Guild in 1998. Drawing from his extensive real-life fire and rescue experiences, he has designed the CRKT production M.A.K.-1™ and Extrik-8-R™ emergency rescue tools, based on the day-to-day needs of professional firefighters, rescue workers, EMTs, police Special Response Teams, and military operators.

The M.A.K.-1™ (Multiple Access Knife) is a rescue and rapid entry knife, made of tough 3Cr13 stainless steel. It has a blunt chisel pry-bar tip for opening doors and windows and a Razor-Sharp knife edge suitable for heavy cutting or hacking tasks. The heavily textured and grooved G10 scales offer an aggressive grip and allow control when wearing gloves. They can be removed for cleaning.

The M.A.K.-1 gives two window-breaking options. A twist breaker groove allows controlled breaking of automobile side windows, while a carbide tip butt breaker allows smashing of building windows or automotive back glass. An 8mm groove functions as a wrench for disconnecting GM-style side terminal batteries. A reflective orange paracord lanyard is included. The satin finish M.A.K.-1 2050 comes complete with a custom Cordura® sheath which will hold a shove knife and an Extrik-8-R™ tool.

The M.A.K.-1 Tactical 2050K is a special model in non-reflective black Teflon® finish with a black lanyard and a custom multi-function Kydex® sheath.

The Extrik-8-R™ is a lightweight seat belt cutter and multi-tool. It has finger holes and grip grooves allowing use even with the heaviest gloves. It also has a rectangular relief which is sized to be an oxygen bottle wrench. James has added a simple blade screwdriver tip to one end, and Phillips screwdriver tip to the other end. The Extrik-8-R also has a hand-tied reflective orange paracord fob. It is available in satin and non-reflective black Teflon® finishes. A fitted Kydex® sheath is included which allows easy carry on belts or webbing.

The M.A.K.-1™ System includes the M.A.K.-1 2050 tool, Cordura Sheath, and a satin finish Extrik-8-R™. It makes the perfect rescue combination for anyone responding to an emergency scene.

Designed for military and police use, the M.A.K.-1™ Tactical System includes the black M.A.K.-1 2050K tool, Kydex Sheath, and a black Extrik-8-R™.

This is my personal choice to carry in my truck. It's multi purpose, built like a tank and can be used as a weapon in a tight situation.

With an overall length of 10" and 10 ounces in weight it can do work that other tools that are carried in a pocket or small belt pouch can't do.
In most rescue situations bigger is better.
I get to use / play with a number of rescue tools in my profession and this is one of the best to carry in a vehicle or in your turnout / bunker gear if you are a firefighter.

Buy a can of 3M spray adhesive and spray it on the outside of the glass ( any auto glass ) and it will prevent the glass from breaking into thousands of small pieces. Makes cleanup easier and safer ( super fast drying adhesive).

Many years ago when I started out in EMS and the fire service, the plethora of dedicated knives and tools were just about non-existant.Many firefighters, and EMTs carried with them a simple linoleun knife, the type that's hawkbilled shape. It was great for prying the chrome trim around windshields, and slitting the butyl rubber gasket that keeps windshields in place,

Windshield are laminated and wouldn't break into little pieces and fly off, go ahead and document with video cam.  :)

I'm not a fan of those spring loaded thingy thou, I'd rather have a carbide tip on back of my knife handle, bet I can smack it a lot harder than the spring can. Too bad I've yet to come across a knife I like with it.

I have the MAK-1 as well and I like it, but I think Ontario's SPAX is a better fit for my Jeep, as the axe could also be used in the woods.  Of course, if I had my way, I'd have both in it at all times!

Vic disk (glass) saw works on a pull stoke and can send small bits of glass flying.

mostly wildland/urban interface with a very liberal dose of metro, rural and "pure" wildland thrown in for good measure.

my current house is in a residential area; the average size home is approx. 3500 sq ft and it goes up from there, we also respond up into the foothills on the eastern end of our battalion.

this house is for the "old" guys and is supposed to be slow :-\

I'm retiring in Sept; can't wait to go, I've had my fill - it's on to bigger and better things! :D

naw.....central California, east side of the san Joaquin valley although my dept covers the un-incorperated area from 6000' in the sierra nevada clear over to the montery county line in the coast ranges.

big area; very, very diverse.

all of our engines are rescue engines: we also have a heavy rescue in the central part of the district that responds any where it's needed.

we serve 2600 square miles and 150,000 citizens with 11 engine companies, 1 ladder, 1 heavy/swift water rescue 1 rescue boat 1 squad, 2 brush patrols, 6 water tenders and 1 state oes engine.

our staffing leaves much to be desired, we run 2-0 staffed except the ladder which is 3-0 and 2 engines staffed 3-0. budgets are very stretched as you might imagine.

how about you? what's your dept like?

That's a lot of territory to cover with that little bit of resources.I wouldn't want the headache of covering staffing for vacations.
My old dept, like I said was a VFD,serving about 4500 people in 6 sq miles.Apparatus is 3 engines,1 rescue, and one command truck out of one station. I took a look at the most recent TOE,and it's very officer heavy.1 Chief,2 Ass't Chiefs,2 Deputy Chiefs,4 Capts,4 Lt's and 24 FF. When I was there and active I was a Driver/Engineer,I see that my old unit number is now assigned to a Lt.

BTW,my great-uncle was a major player in organizing some FD's in Northern Cal,in and around the Truckee area.

My Vic Spirit believe it of not has a slightly longer cutting edge and out performs it several times over .And I can deploy it nearly as quick . The fixed blade does have a serrated edge which is passable .I will only use it in emergancies when I need one handed deployment .The key thing in my job is to have something the public won't be scared of and the Spirit is well suited and with the blunt tip its ideal and really shines in its role  ;)

I just got one of these ...

Boker BK-02BO300 Boker Plus Cop Tool.  The Cop Tool, originally developed and field tested by Roy Huntington, a police officer with more than 20 years experience, features a 1.75" chisel ground blade made of 440C stainless steel. The chisel ground blade has a brushed satin finish with a seatbelt/line cutter, a serrated cutting edge, a sharpened flat chisel tip, a lower finger choil and full tang construction. The deeply checkered G10 handle, 4.25" long, has a finger choil and a lanyard hole. A very durable heay uty thermoplastic sheath is included. Overall length: 6.0" of the tool is.

The Cop Tool can be used as a lever, chisel, belt cutter, scraping tool, or as a multifunctional knife.

Small, compact and extremely effective.

The bead blasted blade is made of high performance 440C stainless steel.

For the perfect grip, even with gloves or wet hands, Boker uses textured G-10 for the handle, which eliminates any danger of slipping.

The leather sheath can be carried discreetly in the waistband, or fits well on any gear belt .

The Boker Plus Cop Tool comes complete with lanyard as shown.

To be honest I doubt the efficienty of a ring mounted window breaker. Your finger bone is pretty weak, so the question is really which is going to break first, your finger or window?  :P

My father has 25 years fire fighter and other than a blade he had a spring loaded punch and with a Brother going into the department I was looking for a good gift for him I was thinking the Vic rescue tool but there sure are alot out there.
Are there firefighters out there who use this or have a fav. I know the punch but is there any other tried and tru ones out there not not just a glove box rescue tool.
Peace
and those ring things are cool but ya I would worry about my finger bones not being strong, neat idea.

I own several ResQmes and mine all work just fine as a punch and as a seat-belt cutter. There really is no need in my opinion to need a replaceable blade, because it's not something that I would play around with. I keep it at the ready and am confident with it after only the one test.

I have one of mine mounted in my truck, by the way. I pulled the headliner out, and punched 2 holes just before the center globe. A grommet in each hole, and the key ring threaded through. It becomes easily accessed by any user in the vehicle, and have no fear that it will get lost in a roll over or a swim.

The others are on various bags I carry, in case I come across a roll over victim, or am on a search (member in training GSAR)  :tu:

In any case, I'm fairly sure if I smack a window with a pair of vicegrips I'll be able to break it, & I've always got a SAK on me to cut whatever needs cutting.

Call me under-prepared or naive if you wish, but so far so good.

There are several ResQme videos on YouTube that show how it works.  I have some and need to get more.

I have a Glock 23 in my console.  I suppose that will take out a window.  Not too good on belts though!

I have a ResQme on my car key. I hope I will never need it. I might get a Vic rescue tool one day.

Bought another ResQme for my better half, but I haven't seen it for weeks. He doesn't believe he will need it, he sais he can always release a seat-belt, no matter in what situation. He took it anyway, just to make me feel better, but now it's not in the car and not on his keys    :(

In 30 years in the fire service and EMS I have never had to punch a window or cut a seatbelt. Most "rescue tools" are marketing gimmicks that are too bulky to carry and usually end up at the bottom of your bunker pockets gathering rust. Besides, when you show up to a call you bring a big truck full of toys anyway!

sorry had to dig this post out

Agreed! Only once the need for a seatbelt to be cut was needed. All I had was Klein side cutters on my bunker pants. That was years ago. The need for a blade never came up again. The years at the department the only vehicle windows ever smashed were at training exercises. Even when the car doors were unlocked.

The Vic rescue tool is a little bit gimmicky. The main blade operates great in extraction gloves, but a little harder to fold back in with the small tab on the liner lock. I hope I'll never have to use it but it will serve well in the bunker coat.

I bought a resqme key chain after loosing my auto centre punch. I always seem to forget to use it even when its with me. I have a Wave on my belt at work everyday. I had left it at home for some time, until after some guys at work got trapped in their vehicle after a crash. I figure I could use the tip of the pliers to break the glass. I cut straps with it and got myself through some doors when poeple needed help in a hurry, plus its got all those other cool tools. I thought about getting a SAK Rescue tool recently, but really thats all it is. All the reviewers seem to say its great but no good for EDC.

I drive a passenger bus for a living, er I am semi retired and when my funds get short I dust off the old Commercial Drivers License with the passenger endorsement.

What I am trying to say is I am responsible for the safety of bus passengers, or my passengers are the loved ones of many other people, so I must be CAREFUL.  As such, I need to evacuate the bus, cut seat belts, and exit through windows, doors and ceiling vents when needed.  Most school districts have evacuation policies, and rules that must be followed.

And most students are very helpful during  fire and emergency drills.  School children are the most treasured cargo on American roads.  So, I have looked at rescue knives for functionality.  I like a couple.

1) The Gerber Hinderer Rescue knife, for its blunted tip sharp belly serrations for cutting belts, window breaker extended away from the handle, and bulk and heftiness for disengaging wheel chair restraints.

2) The Skedco Extreme Medicine  Rescue Knife.  This knife is great design that will cut a passenger's clothes without cutting the passenger.  The knife is hefty enough for must emergency tasks.

Both of these knives will perform well.  Buy them second hand to save some $$$$s.

I keep a Benchmade Houdini in the car. I have yet to use the glassbreaker, which is spring-loaded, just like the ResQ Me, but I use the knife for all kinds of things, like cutting wristbands after a trip to the state fair.

I keep a Colonial Tat Cutter on my during waking hours. It's on a length of paracord, fastened with a breakaway connector. Right next to it is a brass washer, into which I have stamped my blood type, my emergency phone number, and "NKA."

I carry a Houdini Pro on my belt at work.  I've carried it for a year, and used both the cutter and glass breaker.  I did not cut a seat belt, though, but a shirt off of a shooting victim. The glass breaker was not used in a rescue either, but in the extraction of a suspect from a locked vehicle.  Both functions work as advertised.

i carry vic rescue tool since i bought it, also medical shears of course. on long term field operations i always carry a pliers based multitool like lm st200 for mechanical works, generators, o2 tanks etc.

i like vic rescue tool, it is a dedicated folding knife for rescue, can be used easily with thick work gloves. most used tool for me is seat-belt-cutter blade, safe cutter for fabric, ropes etc. glass breaker is useful, have no situation to try the disc saw. has a good sheath for wide belts.

Probably the number one reason why I have not bought one is because of that sheath. The glowing scales is a great idea. Bur I don't know a single self respecting Paramedic who would wear a blight red sheath. I might get one some time if I can get a yellow one with a black sheath.

Of course the Vic Rescue tool could be used for other purposes such as gardening and bushcrafting.

I tend to use it for cardboard box cutting making up parcel boxes.

The saw for glass cutting could be used for cutting woods and branches too.

When in the car and emergency, it will do the original duties of course. A flexible tool.

The saw for glass cutting could be used for cutting woods and branches too.

That saw is too dull to cut wood effectively in my opinion.

I keep Victorinox Rescue Tool in my car, found it too bulky to carry it everyday (I hate the original sheath, the belt loop is too wide for my trousers' belt, it's OK for a duty belt though, so had to make a leather one). I carry it also while working extra as a medical staff on various events.

While I'm off duty or ride I'm someone else's car, I have a Blackhawk Hawkhook in addition to my regular EDC knife.

Skedco Warfighter Extreme Medicine. Mostly bought because I wanted to try Eickhorn's PRT Series (which the Extreme Medicine is a modified PRT-IV, with an added tank key), but it's always good to have with its glass breaker, belt cutter, and blunt blade (which was mostly bought with the intention of freeing livestock in stuff they got caught in.   I paid $30 for mine, but I feel $120 or so they retail for is a bit much, given with a few exceptions (some use Bohler N690, but not many) they use 440A as opposed to something like 154CM or VG-10 like most other high-end rescue knives do.

I'm borrowing Skedco's listing photo for this.

Definitely  - It cannot cut wood at all - I have tried - For an experiment/test
The teeth are flat not sharp

I have Vic Rescue tool in the car and a Rescume me on the keyring - Both tools I hope I never have to use

Someone earlier siad that you could not replace the blade on the Rescume and had this as a black mark
- But why would you need to - It's not a tool for regular use - Right?

Great to hear about all the first respnders and their gear though - esp the Vic

Just a reminder for those who keep tools for self-rescue in their vehicles: In the event of a rollover, anything not securely fastened in place will instantly become a flying hazard to your health, and impossible to find once the vehicle comes to rest.
For example, here's a photo of my sister's van on Christmas morning a couple weeks ago:
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/PLuN185TISMQhT7_-iA1VvKYFlBdta-pmVhPxEeoPfImzBnbqhcW8IoUwvaa-0IHGl1GkVmT2VQgkhsY5T6FQwaKvNfcV5eydW8etxIufSmatLV6XkVFjkjN0lMU340USnuexs2eLcCiDCOf5slsf1iPGeHOr8qIPU7qcxl8vKZqDM75TXzSP6N8jLXFrOWoHn9ca3bhdTzzgV9469eYV-l3grrUnD3IEflhiNGJ3uIa2GR6AGvMRmWGqgXpIEZT9jF0NhCgbXqtdpvpbR-6wKcth_3BuYyx5GY5NkuDBe3sNXQmeEPVdF0VU4X24hlCreV72_h5FpVk4HFiL9dxu3Bpox8thkBO2Firda-jPzggfOqH8D0nfZO_BlFS8h2ZDo3gKdlR_xgjHJthy4sfSIzKXquv3D9IrplfyN_JKLrs7IyddrtVcWmljm68EyDFhg-7rmixqq0b2xKpR0u5qC6kdEBCTFuggbsif7Ev0ZNgyycFGLTkl0K1t6y8l3bXpoEHxrARtaQjUdE3sRovUMmHLV8n10hk8puLb1jWF-EWk_c2TBuyWfHZC7G4aP9ebc76p_XgFfixGmcwAusY87nUxSEYxvHE6uwGpq8z3pvBcIxxxZuZXy_5xw83DlV2np8cEnnnQTbrkNUVljM_bubrkQOcYsFpj55L-HelWbCmi5qcoEHKcIqqIH2n1sgQCUrZgqAFswdAdq9f-tc=w832-h1108-no)

Everybody is alive, but it took them a couple days of searching to find all of the Christmas presents that had been scattered around the crash site.

Carry rescue tools by all means--just don't leave them lying on the dash or in the glovebox, expecting that they'll still be there when you need them.

This is a nice tool.

I have the same tool, and use it in the garden and shed.  I cut huge thick cardboard boxes a few days ago, and it cut like butter.  The boxes were too big for our recycle bin, but the Rescue tool curved serrated blade cut them into nice size to fit in the bin.  No sweat at all.

Today I was using gasoline weed eater tool, and the blade string from the weed eater was too long, and it was tangled itself in the shaft making the weed eater engine stall. I cut it with the Rescue tool main blade, and it freed plastic blade from the shaft.

A great tool - the Swiss Rescue Tool.

Carry rescue tools by all means--just don't leave them lying on the dash or in the glovebox, expecting that they'll still be there when you need them.

What a shocking photo, glad to hear everybody made out alive! Phew...

Boker cop tool, has built in bash, chip, pry and cut functions and a strap cutter. End of handle has glass breaker as well. One piece plus handles. It has incredible  versatility in lawn garden ,industrial settings as well. A hidden gem.

I like the Boker cop tool, great little thing

However, as a car rescue tool I think there is currently only 1 good, compact option and that is the Victorinox rescue tool. Because of the disc-saw, which is pretty much the only way deal with laminated glass (aside from more professional, much larger tools). Of course strongly depending on what you drive (and if you want to help others), but I suspect that glass breakers (and tools like the ResqMe) will not work on about half the cars on the road here in Switzerland.

A tad bit bigger, but quite interesting would be the Eickhorn Rescue Tool II (see image), or III & III SGT. They all have a saw for laminated glass.

Just realized, mine is an older version without glass breaker... which makes it of course a bit less useful as rescue tool, but a bit more carry-friendly without that pockey bit at the back-end.

No dedicated tools for self-rescue. I find it very hard to plan for such occasions.
OTH I try to always be somewhat prepared to help others. A very minimal FAK, a Benchmade rescue hook and LM Raptor shears are always in my EDC backpack. My daily commutes to and from work is typically by bike, running or public transport so keeping my "rescue" items in my backpack makes most sense.

I also do volunteer work in mountain SAR as a dog handler. It's not an activity that require a lot of rescue tools in the traditional sense, but for the occasional person that need basic medical attention, it's nice to be able to cut clothes. In mountain SAR weight really affects your range and speed, so no item comes with me without a very high certainty that its usefulness justifies its weight. In the early days I just carried what I had, I wasn't interested in the tools in the same way I'm now, and there wasn't as much to choose from either.
With experience and access to more information and more tools, my setup evolved to a combination of a Spyderco Salt 2 folding knife and a Benchmade rescue hook. It's very light, semi redundant and not too expensive to justify as a dedicated kit.
The knife is universally useful for a lot of stuff, it's basically maintenance free and with a weight of 1.9 oz/54 grams, it's very easy to justify. It's not an ideal tool to cut clothing or other material close to a persons body, but if I ever have to, the almost sheepsfoot-ish blade would make it somewhat less of a risk.
The rescue hook is a way more dedicated tool, but is also safer to use, super simple and easy to carry.

I wrote above that they're semi redundant, by that I mean they are different enough to warrant carrying both, but similar in that both ultimately work as matter separators. So you're not totally out of options if you loose or forget one.
To maximize the advantage of this redundancy I carry the rescue hook its original sheath on my belt, and I carry the knife on my vest. This way I minimize the risk of forgetting or loosing both at once.

Before arriving at this setup, I was often tempted by the ready made, all-in-one solutions like the BM Triage. To us gear heads, those things are like honey to a bee, but I could never quite convince myself that it was worth the weight penalty. Ultimately I feel like I ended up with a better, more flexible and even a less expensive solution.

Picture is taken a few years ago, and I've since added the LC200N FFG Salt 2, and use that as my primary rescue knife to save a few grams more. Knife position on the vest is just for the knife to show on the photo. It's normally carried securely inside a pocket.
