I know the Hinderer isn't exactly a new model, but so far it's pretty well slipped under the radar, but i think it's about time to bring it back up!

It looks like it is going to have to be the next rescue knife in my collection- it's like a tactical knife, but in a rescue tool format, similar to the Boker RESCOM but a little bit bigger and IMHO easier to operate with heavy gloves. The RESCOM simply isn't big enough to handle while still wearing protective gear.

As Rick Hinderer, designer of the Gerber Hinderer said, it's not as good as shears for what it does, but it works better than going back to the truck to get your shears!

The rescue cutter on the back of the Hinderer is a slightly different shape and design than most rescue cutters, and is also one handed opening. Rick thinks it's better than most of the others, saying that most of the rounded hooked cutters can bunch up. I don't know how true that is, but he's probably got much more experience with it than I do, being an active duty firefighter and all! Still, I am looking forward to doing a rescue cutter shootout and testing this one against the various other rescue cutters I have in my collection.

Gerber announced at the show a new "Police" version of the Hinderer, all in black and with a regular pointy tip, versus the standard Hinderer's rounded tip, but when we asked if we could get pictures, the Gerber rep said he'd ask, and we never saw him again. I was tempted to snap the pictures anyway, but that seemed disrespectful. Besides, I am more interested in the standard Hinderer posted here. It's a pretty big, hefty knife and that's what a rescue tool should be.

It was fantastic to meet the man and shake the hand of a real hero, not because of the work he does, but because he is striving to help other heros in the emergency services to be even more effective at their jobs. Plus, he was a really nice guy to boot!

That does look like a good rescue knife, how does it stack up against the Vic equivalent ???

I can't really compare it to the Vic Rescue knife since I only handled the Hinderer briefly, but if you like big, heavy, overbuilt knives, this is a good choice. If you want a little more elegance and a few more options, get the Vic. :D

Seriously, I can't really give my opinion on which I like better or which one I feel is better until I have a chance to put the Gerber through it's paces. I can say that it feels like a good knife, and that the extra weight is probably a good thing in an emergency since the adrenalin dump will make you lose smaller or lighter items, and it's more simplistic, which is also good in an adrenalin dump, but while the specs look good while it's on a table, it's hard to say how well it will perform when asked.
I think Vic's Rescue tool is better equipped, what with the glass saw and pry bar, but when you are in an emergency and moving fast and slow at the same time, the last thing you want to do is waste energy and time searching for the right blade.
However, the Vic's curved rescue blade/belt cutter seems like it might be more useful in every day situations than the rescue cutter on the Hinderer, so that's why I said it depends on what you like! :P
Personally, when poo hits the fan, given what I know now, I'd be glad to have either of them with me.

I was going to buy that knife for my duty belt but I didn't! I think I may buy one soon! But, I also want the black handled Rescue Tool when that comes out!

One thing that Rick Hinderer said really sticks in my mind. He pointed out to us that many rescue situations require emergency personel to be wearing heavy gloves.
"It's usually not a big problem to get a knife blade out while wearing gloves," Rick said, "but folding that blade away with gloves on is almost impossible with most knives."
Good point. An open blade in an emergency situation is a big safety hazard. The Gerber Hinderer was designed with this issue in mind.

Look just beyond the far end of the clip and you'll see a rectangular cutout for O2 bottles.

Big red handle, easy to open close, non-stabby tip.
I'd seen this in the Cat before, and was tempted, but the serrated blade makes it a bit speSmurfpillsed for me - I don't need to saw through bone half as often as I expected I would.

I wouldnt mind one of these , I've been trained in the use of 02 and will be certificated to use it very soon so the oxygen key feature may be usefull .

I'll probably get a pointy version when it comes out, and keep it clipped to back pocket as an emergency blade in case I need to get myself or someone else out of a car, or cut loose from seat belt.

If you are thinking of an emergency knife, you may want to consider the non- pointy version. People get upset when you stab them while saving them! :D
I also think the standard Hinderer pictured above could do with less of a point.
