Title: What is a Woodsman with a metal file?
Post by: FolderBeholder on March 17, 2019, 09:09:28 PM
Does such a tool configuration exist without having a mod made?

Not to my knowledge.  To get the full tool set of the Woodsman and and the metal file as well, I think you would need to step up to the Swiss Champ.

It does seem like that is the next step.

That does come close, but then you lose the wood saw.

I think a regular Champion is the closest, but you will have the fish scaler too.

I do have a couple of Champions, but I think they have the older metal saw...I like that current one.

I definitely prefer the new metal saw too......they did make a Champion with the new metal saw before they discontinued it....I have one....it has the plus scales.

Oh!  That's a good lead, I have a Champion plus, I'll have to check it for the new file.

I have a Champion Plus with the old magnifier, phillips and metal saw and I have a Champion Plus with the new  magnifier, phillips and metal saw.

Hope you have the one with the new metal saw....if not, you should be able to eventually locate one.

For the 'original' Woodsman, it would be a Mountaineer.  Mountaineer Lite comes closest to the new Woodsman, sans Magnifier.

Looked Mountaineer up, but it doesn't have the wood saw.

Here's the mod I'm thinking of having made.

Start with a Champion Plus w/newer metal file.  Have a Compact as a donor tool.

Take the Champion apart:
Remove fish scaler, small blade, opener layer and back hook.

Put in combo tool and hook with nail file material from the Compact.

I think that would be a great tool for me.  Does anyone see a disadvantage to that mod?

I misunderstood the original question!  Can't think of anything that is like a new Woodsman + Metal Saw.

Sounds like a great mod to me.  :tu: I've considered doing almost the same mods to a '12+ Champ but keeping the small blade. So the final product would be the essentially the same + pliers.

Do it!!  :D

If you're happy with the tool load out, then the only thoughts I have are:

If you're happy with the tool load out, then the only thoughts I have are:
  • The hook w/ nail file seems a little redundant on a knife that has the metal file, which also works fine on nails, but you'd need the donor Compact for the combo tool anyway, so why not?
  • With the Champion Plus apparently discontinued, it might be easier/faster/cheaper to start with a Swiss Champ.
Thank you for your thoughts.
I see your point about the nail file.  The one on the hook is less aggressive, so that is why I thought it might be nice to have for my delicate, dainty fingernails.   I laugh because my nails are actually robust, milk drinker and all.
I have two Champion Plus already that I bought used, but are in great shape, thought I might use one of them....but that discontinued comment does give me pause.

Depends of the version of Champion Plus... Plastic magnifier on most of them. I'd hack one of those in a heartbeat. I got another one recently sub $30 shipped for that purpose.  I'd have a harder time pulling an older gray magnifier apart if it's an original plus model.

I'd consider putting the scissor/nail file on the end layer if you plan on using the file. I prefer it there over in the middle more.

Yes.  It's got the combo tool in it. ;)

I like the idea of the hook with the nail file on back, but I think that if you do a mod you should use a SwissChamp and keep the 2 discontinued Champion Plus's as they are.

The closest I can see on sakwiki is the Expedition Lite but it has the torch/flashlight instead of a magnifying glass.

Yep and you would loose the awl too - Which is a great tool!!

Wait, I don't want to lose the awl.  :ahhh
So the awl is a part of the opener layer, is this correct?

I forgot the link in my last post and according to the sakwiki page it does have the awl.

Thank you for providing the link.    It reminded me that I did buy the Expedition Kit and how I felt I had found the perfect SAK for me.
I am going to hold off on any mod right now because the Expedition is *almost* perfect.  Probably the only thing I'd want changed is switch the flashlight for the Magnifier.
But in all likelihood I'd use the flashlight more than the magnifier.

Wait, what!!???!!

I saved someone from buying a sak!!??!!!   :ahhh :ahhh

How is that even possible in this place??

Seriously thought I'm glad I could help you out, if you need a magnifier could I suggest either a credit card size fresnel lens or a key ring/chain magnifier?

I use the camera on my phone to photograph something, then pinch out to magnify....works great until the battery dies.
