I had a brainiac idea last month and decided to try a new way to attempt to grow tomatoes - upside down, so I could eliminate having to stake them and to have a way to move them into the garage so I can have fresh tom's during the cold season.
As you can see I took hanging baskets with a wire frame and coconut linings, I then cut a small hole in the bottom of the liner and placed the plant into the basket. To hold the plant in place until it got rooted i wet some newspaper and packed it into the liner and filled the basket with potting soil. Well it works well, next time I am going to tie a 1 oz fishing weight to the top of the plant to hold it down, eliminating the up turn in the plant - reaching for the sun. I planted 3 varieties and all 3 have bloomed, so it looks good.

IF the plants get top heavy with tomatoes I can always twisty tie them to the chains that are holding the hanging basket.
What to do with an old fishing net ! (http://www.oklahomahistory.net/ttphotos5a/TomatosBySteve5b.jpg)

Great idea. I have ben growing upside down tomatoes for a few years. On the balcony of my apartment it works great. There is a lot more room if you grow from top and bottom. I never get tired of tomato sandwiches.
