Welcome.
Is that a double magnifier / in-line phillips mod?
......... Thanks, really, to all for the kind welcome! I'm feeling even guiltier for lurking so long. .......
Question is, what took you soo long kamakiri? :pok:The explanation is weirder when I say it out loud...I was inclined to post over several topics since back in maybe 2016...but I thought it a little rude to barge into the community without at least a simple intro. Seemed even more rude as time passed since I've read lots of posts from most almost everybody...even from this thread! I even thought it a bit weird to want to donate to the site because I felt I personally gained from it...when I haven't even made a peep. Fixed both of those things yesterday...and also make the kick-off donation for 2019 in the amount of $20.19. Maybe a little cheesy...but hey, why not? The shoe fits...
Just kidding... awesome detailed explanation on the bail mod... :like:
Can we ask you to make a separate thread on the bail reproduction and modded SAK in the Mod Squad section? :cheers:Soitenly! I've got lots to add to existing threads that I've bookmarked and plan on starting a few where appropriate. Like dating with springs through the '70s...some awl info for @frater_martin...as well as some mag glass stuff, etc.
I found out something that may help the owner's of the old scissors on the go: If you carefully place the tweezer tip into the screw and turn the tweezer handle firmly but not too strong, and , you can tighten the screw that way without carrying any extra tools. works at least on 91mm.
So it's a pocket telescope then :D
Hello there and... Welcome! :salute:
Is it just me or do all your spare parts look like they have little pixie faces?

Still need to finish filing and peening. Anyone notice that I was working with the pins 'free' and not in any jig or board?
Any guesses on the scales planned? Or suggestions what you'd use? :dunno:
Can I claim the combo tool location as 'kamakiri style'? :D
I was thinking the free pins where for photo looks. That's a great suggestion! I've never had one with G10 before. Color suggestion, Ray? I'm thinking I'd get some SwissBianco ones in the future when I mod something I really like.

And checking the wiki on Yeomen, theres a pic of two with the scissor and mag/phillips layer switched. Might have worked better for this one too. I don't use hooks much, but I like it better in the middle for kickstand use.
This is a pleasure to watch :hatsoff:
Kickstand duty and usage is a plus! :like: :tu:And always better used that way without either keyring style in the way. I gotta make one with a hook and shackle, because the it can be flipped out of the way!

Agreed! :like:
Great mod the reverse kamakiri style yeoman thingy :like:
I was wondering, does the combo tool get in contact with the scissors?
And do you think the mag/philips layer could be better put into the middle position?

Gotta quickly figure out what I'm going to do with knife time this afternoon...might just be cleaning some of the recent arrivals. :dunno:
Excellent job on the blade straightening :like: :tu:
Yeah, not too bad and I've fixed worse but with some degradation of the cosmetics. I'm more concerned with not marring the edge or sides on this one. Making it straight might come at the expense of some surface dimpling. I always try for the 'right' fix for the given condition.
:rofl:Excellent job on the blade straightening :like: :tu:

Hey Grant, what's new? :hatsoff:
I love sourdough bread
It's just not something you can do in a hurry, like a pizza.
That new SAK project of yours sounds... big
Btw, found a nice "period correct" addition to the Traveller :salute:
Nice one Matt :like: :tu:
That's interesting about the scissor spring. I didn't notice anything visually or in operation. Vic MTO is pretty thick and could mask contact surface roughness. If the Ballistol lube component is on the thin side, it might not like the shearing action.
Must be nice to have your wife make it. Mine prefers simpler projects like soda bread. Pleased with my first attempt!

I'm using Ballistol since the early '80s and trust it.
It is slightly alkalic though, but never had a problem with it on my SAKs and MTs
I always oil the liner areas too as you said.
I had a very very slight grinding problem on the other '80s Traveller on 3 implements but they were unused and not as highly polished as they are these days. It quickly went away.
Never any of those problems on newer SAKs.
No worries Grant, it's got better already and snaps open and close with no grinding. Just not super slick.
How's your project going?
Very interesting old knife KK - I guess there can't be many SAKs with that design of opener and the Phillips as the can-opener went out and Phillips came in round about the same time.Yes, and not many are known in 90/91mm. Some doubt their existence. The big question is wether tge Phillips is from earlier than Victorinox’s records/estimate/published date or that the crab claws lasted longer.
The pin removal technique sounds interesting - It's always a tricky job to do - Can you enlighten us some more on the approach pls? It’s a work in progress and everyone in the mod forum isn’t happy that I’m not providing more details. :dunno:
Yes, reducing the tip by sharpening or reproducing another millimeter+ or so would make it clear. I took a bit off the corner of the round of the tang to help a bit. But it’s hard to work the material that way in an assembled knife. Still hangs low. Thanks for checking. Was this due to the donor? Is it easier to start with a Spartan and add the magnifier than to remove a layer from an Explorer?

Does the shield light come on with the flashlight? Or are they switched separately?
Can this be added to a non-lite model like an Explorer?

If you make an Explorer like that, I'll be envious forever.....In Blue/sapphire? The newer color? They keep changing it! I can almost date Sapphire knives just by the color. Without checking the date codes or looking at the style of back scale. And Explorer not Passenger? Still a preference for a gray magnifier?
Gray magnifier. Either blue or red (doesn't matter) . I don't need the scissors, but I'd be OK if they were there.
Test fit in older mag layers and the 1225 batteries don’t fit at all. 1 or 2 fit in the newer ones depending which side the driver is on.Could the batteries fit in lieu of the scissors or the on-end Phillips screwdriver?
Could the batteries fit in lieu of the scissors or the on-end Phillips screwdriver?
Wouldn’t be a ‘problem’ to put a big battery even like like a 123 size, but the compartment required wouldn’t look like knife or tool parts at all.
Great work, Kamakiri! :like: :like:
Hey Kama,
I hope this works! Here are the pics. It looks like it just needs a new bail fitted on, the contact points are still there. Let me know if this looks doable.
[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]
Hey Rit,
Pics are perfect and just what I needed to see. :tu:
It’s absolutely doable. Pin looks good enough to reuse. I was just working on my no-drill rivet removal on an early ‘60s Huntsman LNF in need of some repairs. So getting the broken bail end off won’t be a problem at all, whichever way. That’s the good news.
The not so good news is that I’m planning on making tooling to fabricate shackle ends faster. That project has been on the back burner for a while and I’d like to get that done before I make another. At least that was my plan.
I’ll PM you later about some of the timing details and some other thoughts.
Happy that the no-drill rivet removal worked here with the focus on not removing/cutting the nickel silver material (much) to get it to release.
:woohoo:
Sounds great Kama! Looking forward to hearing from you. Whatever you decide to do, don't feel pressured. I'm very curious about that shackle fabricator, seems like you're a regular MacGyver.
Thanks for that, but any pressure is pre-existing and internally generated! I’ve been meaning to set things up for a while to do projects like this. I should thank you for giving me one more reason to move things along faster. Shipping/receiving…websites…payments…terms and conditions…so many moving parts! And that’s the stuff that has nothing to do with the actual work! So far, I’ve only tended toward projects that I find or furnish all the parts so the ‘sale’ only occurs after the work is completed and ready to ship. I've been contacted occasionally about doing service, repair, and mod work, but so far I’ve only been able to respond ‘no’ or ‘not yet’…
Anyway, checked off some items in the to-do list today regarding such logistics. I’ll have to owe you that PM for now.
Alrighty Kama, I do hope you can get all that going sometime soon! Looking forward to it!
Work on the tooling started today and is progressing quickly! Testing with other material was promising on the prototype/beta tooling and work has started on the permanent stuff. That’s today's good news.
The not so good…I came up with a better idea for the tooling. So I need to figure out the materials and blanks I gotta order. At least that won’t slow the progress with the existing tool setup.
Proof of concept/process on left, OEM on right.
Really glad to hear that things are moving along nicely! The PoC looks great and if the only bad news is that you have a superior method to fabricate shackles I'd say you're doing just fine.
Welcome and great work. I hope you have all your inoculations though...the sh*t on some of those knives made me want to hurl.
Also had to wait for more nickel silver to show up…and that finally did today! So the tooling was ‘finished’ about as far as I could take it without further testing a week ago. And I really wanted to get this process tested with the ‘correct’ 2mm diameter, instead of larger diameter rods that would need to be thinned after the ends were both forged. I dislike that extra work step.
About an hour after the wire was here and unpackaged, I had the first nickel silver prototype forged. Taking what I learned I got the second one done in under 24 minutes. Happy about that, but I want to get that to under 10 mins from the time I measure and clip the wire.
Trimmed up the second one after dinner. Not perfect, but just about ready to be installed in a 2-layer 91mm. First one is sized for a 3-layer with a saw…I think I’m going to keep it as is, being the first one that I forged with this tooling.
That’s it for today, but I gotta spend some time thinking about any adjustments I should make to either the process or the tooling.
Very fascinating stuff! Do keep the updates coming.

Progress on the bail/shackle fabrication. Slight improvement on the initial forging. Waiting for some different material from a different supplier…unfortunately gonna be a bit of a wait.

Looking good Kama! I'm really appreciating the regular updates. What's the material? Some kind of nickel silver?
Yes, it is. I’m just hoping to I have any progress on this front sooner than later as I’ve bumped some other projects ahead of the bail and shackle work.
You and me both Kama lol. I'm pretty thrilled with what I've seen thus far.
So am I, but if I can’t get to the point where the final products are both better and faster than my older process using mostly files, I’d have to abandon this work or at least set it aside somewhat and move forward with perhaps casting. …Which I’m familiar with and could use the existing tooling to help with things like the wax positives or maybe touch-ups or specific reforming for certain era reproductions. But I really don’t want to go that way.
…
Unrelated, but I finally got some titanium scales to use for test fitting. I’ve been liking using alox and screws for similar 84mm test fitting…I figured these would make sense for 91mm mods.
Also got some titanium sheet for liners. Gonna find out the hard way how to cut these by hand.

Well I do hope the method you're experimenting with ends up working out. I wish I was that handy and could give you some input but unfortunately I'm simply not. Are the liners for your own builds, repairs, or both?
I didn’t have a specific use in mind. I think the uses would depend on how well and how fast I can do it…consistently. I suppose I’m more interested in the process and making a project of it first.
