Good evening all! I'm looking to start a 30 day traditional knife challenge.... I'm personally going with Case brand as that is most of my small collection of traditional knives. If anyone would like to join me (with any brand, I won't judge too much ;) ) I'd be happy to have you! I'm going to put up my first image on Sunday December 2nd.
-
-
I hope you have a good challenge.
-
Actually I'm between challenges right now and my Case knives are going crazy from lack of use, so I'm in !!
-
I'll kick off Day 1 with the Mini Sodbuster!
-
Good luck with the challenge guys :tu: :like:
-
Thanks Poncho! I've been missing packing a traditional.
-
Sodbuster again for today!
-
....I totally forgot to do Sunday... So my day one starts today
Day 1, case CV trapper in yellow.
-
Sodbuster again for today!
ooh! I'll have to bust out my black sodbuster this week. Maybe when I do some work on the white ink printer.... For contrast 😂
-
I love your yellow Trapper with the Channel Locs!
-
Yawl are off to a good start. :like:
-
:cheers:Thanks David!
-
Great pics both of you :tu: :like:
-
Thanks Barry!
Those are among the handiest things I carry. Saves me at least 20 minutes a day in walking to the toolbox.
For my day 2, I brought out the sodbuster junior. My first Case knife. I like it,but much prefer a knife with bolsters. That's the only thing stopping me from getting one in yellow CV
-
I actually have more Case knives than this, but I haven't switched out yet!
-
Mighty Trapper Lock!

More great pics guys :tu: some great knives already in here :tu: :like:

Great pics guys!

Day 3, wrapping some Christmas gifts with the trust trapper
-
Mighty Trapper Lock!
How do you like the lock on those? I've always had a hard time picturing a modern lock on a Case knife, but I like the idea
-
It's actually very tight and functional. The liner lock is easy to reach. I can't say it's Spyderco fast, but handy.
-
Went with the Sodbuster again!
-
More great pics guys :like: and I wasn't even aware that Case had a liner lock :sa:
-
Thanks Poncho! Yes, it's a single blade Trapper.
-
Day 4:
Small toothpick opening up new encoders. Doesn't scare the co-workers too much ;)

:tu: :like:
-
Not sure how I forgot the picture...this challenge is proving my absent-mindedness!
I take it you prefer single bladed designs Barry?
And have you any experience with the Copperlock? I've eyed them up for ages.
-
I'm actually a big Trapper/ Mini Trapper fan. I haven't done anything with the Copperlock but I'm dying to get my hands on a Seahorse Whittler.
-
Soddie again! The mini version fits nicely in a uniform shirt pocket!
-
Day 5: at the reloading bench opening new goodies
-
Nice setup!!
-
Nice setup!!
Thank you kindly! It's served me well so far, only had it a year but it's made a lot of .357, 38 special, and recently 30-30.
Day 6s picture is again at the bench with my trapper
-
Not a great picture as I was rapidly running out of daylight.

It hasn't saved me a lick of money as I thought... ??? ??? ??? I just shoot more for my dollar, and shoot much more fun cartridges. Nothing like some H110 putting fire out the end of a barrel :gimme:

You're right!

Mine with some good old fashioned organic energy!!

Pic of the Vise before you get going :pok:
-
A small, old Yost with plenty of use, a broken anvil, and lots rust. But everything moves, locks up tight, and isn't crumbling. It's got some life in it yet!
-
I like it!!
-
My all time favorite Case, a yellow Mini Trapper that I thought I'd lost on a trip to Boston, was found by my wife while unpacking some bags. No idea how it got there, and I was discussing a Case Stockman Noah lent me when she said she found "some knife" in a gift bag. I must have looked like I just witnessed the dead come to life! :woohoo:
-
Packing my son's Stockman today!
-
Good to see you've been reunited!
For day 9, the only two things in the shop that you can trust.... A tool, and the Bible of metal. Curly green maple peanut and machinery's handbook.
-
Nice Peanut!

A very cool vise dkop :tu: and very happy to hear you found your lost knife Barry :like: :like:
-
Thanks Poncho! I just had this Stockman given to me by Noah :ahhh
-
Just wondering Barry, what's the appeal of 3 blades on a stockman for you? Any special tasks you find the combination suited to?
Today's my toothpick again. I got lazy after work turned into an unexpectedly long day, so y'all just get my keyboard for a background today, haha. But with my custom keys added for flair!
-
I really only use the spey blade. I've never understood why the originator of this design did that. Maybe someone here does?
-

Dont know the official answer but here's my take on it:
Clip - general around use
Sheepfoot - heavy duty use
Spey - castration
-
Sounds good to me David!

Clip - general around use
Sheepfoot - heavy duty use
Spey - castration
That's the general impression I get as well. Whittling with the sheepsfoot blade too. I'm just not sure I see a need for three blades for those of us who spend most of our lives in suburbia. BUT that's just one man's opinion
I love trappers and don't use the spey blade for it's intended purpose, so I'm lumped into the same boat!
-
I'm a Trapper guy myself, but I use the spey blade almost exclusively. For me, it's easier to open and I am just drawn to it.
-
It's my understanding that the 'spey' blade was included on the Trapper because, for the same reasons it's good at speying, it's great for skinning. It's less likely to poke a hole in a hide or animal because the 'point' is relatively obtuse, but retains plenty of belly.
The long straight edge is useful for any number of tasks, and the curved tip of the spey blade often proves useful for delicate cutting tasks...especially where an acute point might be tricky. I tend to use the spey blade for more mundane tasks, e.g. opening a package or peeling an apple, and 'save' the edge on the clip blade for when a sharp point is needed to get into a tight spot, e.g. under a string.
I too am a fan of the Spey blade. :tu:
-
 Nix! I knew you had great taste! I'd love to put a Trapper to its intended purpose, but trap lines are as rate as the written letter in these parts.

:D
Great minds think alike!
Something about trapper patterns just works for me.
I came so, so close to springing on a pen knife pattern deal today, but it was tru-sharp. As far as inexpensive stainless goes, Tru sharp isn't bad. But I don't need any more of it in my life. CV from here on out!
-
Right on! :tu:
-
Mighty Mini again!
-
Bright sunny day, tank full of gas, and a shop with no half completed project.... What mischief can we get into today?
-
Mighty Mini again!
Jealous! I love old Leatherman tools. Carry an original super tool almost daily.
-
My son found it for me while talking to a machinist on his ship. The guy asked if he was interested in buying it, and Noah knows how much I love old Leatherman tools. He got it for a great price and gave it to me. It's a great tool. I've an OG Supertool, too. I love it!
-
Nice going fellas :tu:
Gotta love the old school Leatherman tools ! :dd:
-
. Thanks buddy and :iagree: about the Old School Leatherman!
-
Merry Christmas to those who celebrate!
I was going to cheap out and use construction grade lumber to build this bed frame. My father said Merry Christmas, you're getting "real" wood and some tools :D
-
Merry Christmas to you my friend and I love that yellow Trapper!
-
Stockman used to open packages today!

You guys are getting close to the end of your challenge. Hang in there! :tu:
-
Nearly forgot to pose for a picture today, in spite of being used several times!
-
I know that watch! I have one too.
-
Nice ones fellas ! You are in the home stretch ! :tu:
-
Thanks buddy! This is just for fun for me since I have the Traditional badge :D
-
Cutting cardboard, trimming rough edges, opening some new clamps.... A busy day. The bed frame approaches completion slowly.
The watch was just given to me as a gift. My daily watch (a Seiko 5 series) isn't waterproof. Someone thoughtfully bought me a waterproof Casio to wear when with river rescue!
-
Nice job!!
-
Nice job!!
As much as I'm enjoying this streak of trappers... I may have to switch it up tomorrow. gotta keep some variety!
-
Here's mine. I like it!
-
I don't usually buy these things .... But at that price, it was cheaper than a new brush set. How can I say no?
Nice watch Barry!
-
Thanks! I have one of those bore brushes and they work pretty well. Nice looking Case!
-
Dkop, I really enjoyed this challenge! Thanks for hosting it! As I go along, I'm finding that I really love the traditional knives. There's just something about them that just feels good!
-
45 minutes late, sadly...
Busy day.
-

Very much agreed! A simple cutting tool needn't be fancy. Unfortunately I missed the mark for a post on the 30th by a hair
-
Close enough :tu:
-
Congrats fellas ! It's been fun following along :tu:
-
. Thanks Steve! It was a great time!
-
I also started a day later than Barry, so here's my final day! Conveniently, my bed frame is complete too. Now, just a finish coat!

Thanks Steve! I really enjoy the traditional side of things. Not only is it a trip back in time for me but also a chance to carry something with a ton of quality and character.
