Title: Flair Owners Unite!¡!
Post by: stealth007s on May 11, 2013, 02:49:36 AM
I searched the hallowed halls of MTO for a Flair Owner's Club and found none so I figured I'd start one. I got my wife the Flair(s) for Mother's Day this year. I got two because I got a good deal on them both. I told her one can be hers and I can have one as well :D Here's some images

The date codes on this one are both 0799 but the corkscrew side handle is barely readable.

The date codes on this one are 1099 on the corkscrew side and 1199 on the other. The spreader knife was a little scratched and the main blade was dull but nothing I can't handle :D I really love the sheath on this one and don't recall seeing it before. If anyone has info on it let me know.

I think she does.I hyped it up so much when I thought it was going to be her Christmas gift last year. She's a wine drinker and loves olives, pickles and cheeses. This tool will get a lot of use. Maybe it's a good thing I got two  :D

Well I suppose it would be good if at least one Flair that was produced actually got used!

The Flair is the ultimate multitool. It is as strong as the PST but with usefull extras. It has proper multitool pliers, screwdrivers etc. Nothing has come close to it yet.

I have used it (yes some do get used chief) to fix a rotiserie, move the spits about, shift the meat on them, cut the meat and eat it, with some nice wine, using just one multitool.

If,and I say IF, it has a shortcoming is that the corckscrew is a bit delicate. The Juice line gets stronger corkscrews.

when you guys oil this particular tool, is it a concern what to use, since it comes into contact with food?  i've always oiled food tools with consumable oil, often olive when i can't get hold of the high dollar stuff.

i do love those old sheaths.  i'm actually kind of delighted mine had no gold stamping--made it a little different from my others.

where would one go about putting a lanyard on a flair?  if i had two, i would swap out or grind down the locking screwdriver on the non-corkscrew side and punch a hole for a lanyard.  i've got a short sterling silver chain i made (before i ran out of links, and money to make more links, and my silver wire source) that would be PERFECT, but i don't want to grind or punch anything if i only have one of them.

if i ever find a second flair i will certainly perform and display this thought.

On the flair (as well as on the PST and the PSTII) there's a small thingy on one of the plier-pivots, with hole for a small splitring   ;) . Here, I made a pick for you  :salute:

Post by: Agonistes on May 25, 2013, 06:22:12 PM
thank you for the pic!  oddly the small ring is on the other side of mine, but when i put a small splitring through it, it stuck straight out, had no play.  since that is the smallest ring i have i'll have to try something else, or a smaller ring or something.

i had no idea that little thing was a lanyard attachment.  i have one on my other older LM tools, and i have always hated it bec ause i couldn't figure out the use for it.  now that i know the use, i'm still not thrilled; what lanyard worth using attaches near the jaws?

Given the toolset of the Flair I wouldn't want the lanyard anywhere else.

I cleaned up this old user only to have it poached by my better half.
On a girls trip she saved the day when the motels corkscrew was missing.
I found out later when being moaned to when he couldn't find his wife one.

i added a lanyard, but it might not stay forever...not because i might remove it but being silver it's got really soft links.  i don't see myself using the flair pliers much, so it's not really in the way.  got to find a s. silver fob for it, maybe a bunch of grapes or something.

Hi Flair owners, I am desperate to join your club, but thus far, I'm not able to find one in good condition. I have found one, but with a broken backspring for the corkscrew. The seller is asking US$45. Is that a good price and how important is the back spring? Should I be patient and wait for one in good condition? I'm in the UK, so we do not get Leathermans for sale on ebay. Please can someone show me a picture of what the backspring should look like?

Part of the flair  ;)  of the LM Flair is all the nice details on it, like the scrolls and the golden colour. If a part of it is damaged it does lose some of that flair.
You really want  a mint one if possible, something you can proudly show off and the broken backspring will result in a floppy corkscrew and make it less impressive (I think some other memebrs here had similar issues with the corkscrew).

Wait for a good one. They are around and if you buy a damaged one you will still want to buy a better one later anyway.

The Flair is a very very nice tool.  I have to say its top 2 LM for me just under the JPST.  Stealth had some great luck with his so I'm sure his mojo is a lot better than mine.  I've hunted for a fair priced one and to no avail, my roommate found this for me.  Good luck to you.

I'm assuming you mean the concept of the Flair?
Leatherman never took it any further.

Same could be said for the pruners too - I'm pretty damn certain they'd sell.
Or even brand new everyday functional concepts. They've still failed to deliver their own blunt nose MT despite celebrating 30yrs manufacturing. That's simply unbelievable!!

Sorry if I side tracked your post  :D

Slight side step, but well within subject.
Your argument has validity. Though some models of the Juice series have a few Flair like qualities.  They still don't meke the grade like the Flair.
IMHO
If they decide to remake th Flair.  Making it with a Sidekick/Wingman Chasis has possiblities.  Or go "less is more" with the Skeletool body, loose the Screwdriver and pocket clip(corkscrew and fork have to go somewhere)

I'd like to see a "Flair 2" as well. Great urban/weekend/going out/food and drink geek tool. I love mine, and an updated version would be something I would buy two of.

Beats hell out of a snowboard tool.

Won a Smurfit Flair tonight, and will probably do a month long EDC carry thing about it for kicks.

Had read the spread was more for cheese and crackers, and the fork was for hors d'oeuvres and small pickles ... but ... I often don't carry a spork with me at job #2. I have a plastic fake spork in the glove box of my car ... the spork that used to reside there went walkabout. So... have plans on using the Flair fork as a fork, for all intents and purposes. As for a spoon ...
If it doesn't work for me maybe I'll find a home for it. Am guessing it's the size of a PST?

G'Day,

I use a Flair Fork daily for lunch duties. It is much better than a plastic utensil of any kind IMHO.  :D I added a Flair fork to a PST / PST II combination of tools and that works well for me.
Linky: http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,42637.msg683928.html#msg683928

The Flair is roughly the size of the PST, just a tad thicker due to the cork screw.

Cheers,

Pete

Yes everyone should have a Flair :D A very odd tool for the time LM came out with it but looking back it is a forerunner for some of the corkscrew carrying Juices  My dad got one from our company years ago and carried it for a pretty good while before deciding that it was a bit silly and stopped carrying it ::) :D

Hope you like it OII

is there some concern over the Flair corkscrew? Has anyone swapped it out for a Juice or other version?? Or it just too sexy to do this? :D

Seems like I have heard that they are weaker than the Juices corkscrew and have been known to bend or worse snap off :o I would be careful with it anyways just to be on the safe side :tu:

I bought a Flair that had a broken cork screw back spring - a common fault. I removed the corkscrew and added a PST II file to it. It is about 99% fit, with the file needing some sanding to open completely. Here is the write-up: http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,56229.msg997812.html#msg997812
I have not sanded/filed the top of the file to open it completely, but can happily report it works very well. It is a very cool tool.

I have an extra cork screw if needed, but they are riveted in. I don't know if they will be compatible with the Juice ones.

Cheers,

Pete

I recently bought a Flair, and had to return it because the corkscrew was loose. It was literally dangling in all directions. Seller claimed it a common problem. Is it normal for this tool? I was expecting it as snappy as the Juice's.

The corkscrew was the first one used by LM and it is quite fragile. As you said the later LM models get a better one. It is common for them to break, but that does not mean you should not look for/get a working one.

Yep a common problem for a lot of second hand ones. It is not the cork screw that breaks, but the back spring on the inside that holds the tension. If you are not going to use the cork screw the tools from a PST / PST II will fit in there. All you need to do is to drill / file the rivet off, but be careful not to scratch the handles.

Cheers,

Pete

Thanks for the inputs, guys. The back spring was probably broken, hence dangling corkscrews. Having handled one, my curiosity was satisfied.

Hmm, I looked through and re-read all the topics about Flair on the MTO, I tried to find all available information on the Internet, and found no mention of this important detail anywhere. Well, I'll be the first to notice that the older (xx99 - 0200) Flair's corkscrews has 5 small turns, and the later items (0300 - xx04) - 4 larger turns

Another intersting Flair detail - on early items (~0699 - ~1099) date code has only on knife handle, corkscrew handle without date codes
(https://content-29.foto.my.mail.ru/mail/wowaboro/264/b-647.JPG) (https://content-29.foto.my.mail.ru/mail/wowaboro/264/b-647.JPG)

So, at now, I counted 4 different Flair modifications.

The only reason of the 5 turns vs. 4 turns is that less turns on the corckscrew worm means wider spacing and is less likely to cause damage to the cork compared to the 5 or more turns with tighter spacing. However, not sure if that's the main reason why LM decided to change the design, unless Tim is a wine aficionado or connoisseur ;) :drink:

 :iagree: with Poncho.

Just want to add, a cheaper solution could be a sheath for the Crunch. It doesn't have the same looks though and is a tiny bit too large  :dunno:

The Crunch originally also came with the same sheath that the Pulse did  I was keeping in the old school theme of sheaths that were of better leather but the sheath that Stitchy shows above is also an option :tu: They were made around 2004 to maybe 2010 or so and were less quality but still hold up well  They might not be as easy to find as today's sheath but would likely be cheaper than the old school ones :tu:

You could stretch a PST sheath out pretty easily by getting it wet and forming it to the Flair. I stretched one out to fit a Rebar. You can still get Pulse sheaths on eBay if you keep your eye out .

I recently acquired this specimen, with an interesting feature. Notice the PST II on the handle.  A mod or a strange variant? The interesting thing is that both handle dates are  12/99?

Not sure if they did use PST II handles as well.
I would not expect that to be honest.
Is the tool set correct?

Anyhow, congrats on your Flair  :like:

I searched the hallowed halls of MTO for a Flair Owner's Club and found none so I figured I'd start one. I got my wife the Flair(s) for Mother's Day this year. I got two because I got a good deal on them both. I told her one can be hers and I can have one as well :D Here's some images

The date codes on this one are 1099 on the corkscrew side and 1199 on the other. The spreader knife was a little scratched and the main blade was dull but nothing I can't handle :D I really love the sheath on this one and don't recall seeing it before. If anyone has info on it let me know.

the Flair had minimal assembly difficulties and hangups. The riveted corkscrew was often too tightly tensioned in first run. That was just a machine adj. The can opener is yellow zinc plated. Stains on the outside of it where rejected. It had a common thinning on the inside and a water dropplet or 2, discoloring.

They are around and if you buy a damaged one you will still want to buy a better one later anyway.
alright, so for loose corkscrew. It is a pin applied by hand on the backside pushed up thru the hole. The outside of handle is a tiny cap. These tool handles were placed in a fitted jig. The jig pressed on with a long leverage handle. They made a notorious pop  sound when applied. So you can take, to that cap, an applied force to secure it tigher. Maybe using a small socket, covering only the cap then tap it with a hammer. I would fold out the components fill the empty handle with a fat pieces as an anvil. Of course having the handle placed on a flat surface first,(make it solid against pin). So it is not a rivet it is a force fit cap. I have done thousands of these. Date code 0699

you're welcome! I'm giving as much as I can share that may help with fixing simple things. Repairing vintage new looking tools is much harder.. especially when you don't have a replacement 😁  Noting the Flair Corkscrew thing. Because we tried to smack the pin cap twice.the corkscrew would be way too tight.actually unmoveable. The tool I used to tap the cap was specifically made in the tool shop at Leatherman. It was a handheld punch, the end that made contact with the cap was tapered. With what it took to make this I'm certain it was mounted securely and drilled.(drill press) finished with something you would find in a moto tool kit. a tapered abrasive composit. The idea was to not Mar the cap or hit the pin. Those that were tapped by hand had a little bit of a burr between the cap and pin edge. Probably the weakness of a very well built tool. It is almost a No-No to touch the bottle opener with any kind of cloth paper towel, cleaner as it will rub off so easily...

screws and component pivot long nuts. They were pre-treated with a liquid catalyst, soaked in a bucket. Scooped from the bucket then dumped and mixed with media in a heated tumbler. Done when the timer goes off. This fine layer was a catalyst for the glue. So if you dripped a drop of glue on the table it would never dry but when it was applied to the nut and the screw was screwed in, it acted like a medium loctite.  the inspector was given 3 minutes to adjust the tension otherwise it would set up that quick. If you ever have to tension your tool. must remove screw. Apply a medium loctite in there but not red. And adjusted the tension. Olive oil dip, crc,  but you can expect any petroleum based oil to dry out. eventually.

I wish LM had done a better job with the brass plating on the "Flair" extra piece. When I first got mine, I thought it looked strangely worn even though the rest of the tool was in great shape. After some internet sleuthing (e.g. looking at examples here), I can see that most of them seem to have patchy plating 🤷🏻‍♂️.

Mine 0699. Day &swing shift Crew assembled roughly 500 of these after the first  Prototypes for employee handout. This was no easy task. Pitless unmarred components were selected. Most crucial was the selection of plated can openers..none of tjese were plated inside- most were downright stained and ugly but it was the outside that mattered and one out of five was plated correctly. Yes there was a lot of scrap but we managed. This plating is the most precious and easily destroyed of any Leatherman tools.
